Jeff Peek Volunteer of the Month for May 2011 If one were to check our church’s phone records, I’m sure they would discover that one of the most frequently called numbers is that of Jeff Peek, May’s Volunteer of the Month. As chairman of the Building & Grounds Committee, Jeff is our “go to” guy whenever anything needs fixing around here – which happens more often than you might imagine! Recently, Jeff has been spotted under the kitchen sink, installing a new faucet, downstairs with the wet vac, attempting to dry out the basement following our latest flood, and in the bottom of the elevator shaft, changing out a sump pump. Let’s just say, he spends a lot of time in undesirable places doing things most of us would just as soon not have to do. As a Cookeville native, Jeff spent a lot of time during his growing up years hunting and fishing with his Dad, helping his Grandpa on the family farm, and playing baseball. After graduation, he worked with his father for eight years as a professional painter. In 2002, he went to work for the City of Cookeville Electric Department. He started out as a lineman (or a pole climber, as he put it), and worked his way up to the position he currently holds as an electrical engineer. Jeff was raised in the Free Will Baptist Church, but was persuaded to join our church soon after he married Alice. It seems we have our faithful Cumberland Presbyterian women to thank for many of the wonderful men who have joined us over the years! Apparently, it didn’t take long for the powers that be to realize that Jeff would be a real asset to the Building & Grounds Committee. After spending six years or so on the committee, he became its chairperson. When approached a couple of years ago to become a member of the Church Session, Jeff says that he was very reluctant because he didn’t feel worthy of serving in that capacity. He resisted at first, but finally decided that God was calling him to that responsibility. According to Jeff, “Coming to this church was the best thing that ever happened to me, along with serving on the session. It has forced me to do things I never thought I could.” Jeff says that he has never been comfortable getting up in front of a crowd, but I reminded him that he has participated in two of our drama events during the past year or so. After appearing as a shepherd in one of our Christmas plays and a disciple in last year’s Maundy Thursday program, we may have found another hidden talent! Jeff is a man with many hobbies. He says that he still enjoys hunting, and has taken up golf. He also raises cows and chickens on his grandpa’s farm in his spare time. Basically, he enjoys doing most anything that takes place outdoors. In addition to all of the above, he finds time to serve on the Board of Directors for the Middle Tennessee Credit Union, and both he and Alice participate in the Make-A-Wish Foundation, making dreams come true for area children who have life-threatening diseases. When asked if there was anything else he’d like to say, he simply replied, “Life’s good!” One need only look at the expression on his face to know that he lives life to the fullest and enjoys every moment of it. Thanks, Jeff, for all you do for us, and for your contagious smile! You are a wonderful Christian witness and a great ambassador for Christ. God bless you! The Event will be held on May 6th and will start at 6:00 p.m. and run until 6:00 a.m. The First Cumberland Presbyterian Church Relay for Life Team will sponsor a Food Booth at the May 6th 2011 Fairgrounds’ Relay for Life Event and included on the menu is hamburgers, hot dogs, fried pickles and more. One of the menu items they would like to offer is fresh baked goods and the team is asking for donations of pies, brownies, cookies and cupcakes from the congregation. If you are willing to donate any of these items, please leave them (in a disposable container) in the Fellowship Hall kitchen on the days of May 5th and 6th. If you have any questions, please contact Becky Greer or Denise Newberry. If you would still like to become a part of the team or are currently participating, please join us for a Relay meeting on Monday, May 2nd, at 6:00 p.m. in the Church Session Room.
