This Nationals has been a long-time-coming – 30 years, in fact! As we celebrate HWA’s 30th Anniversary this weekend, many of us who’ve been coming for a while look back on good times, good friends, and great Airedales we’ve known, thanks to this club. The influx of new and enthusiastic participants in recent years gives us hope that HWA will be going strong 30 years from now, with new generations of Airedale pups taking their place in our stories and history. HWA has survived -- and in a real sense revived – through the dedication of Airedalers who believe in the Airedale as a versatile hunting dog. Along the way, we value the knowledge and experience of participants who are trueblue dog trainers, breeders, and/or hunters. We also realize that many Airedale owners come to the Nationals to learn more about the breed; to see how their dog does; or just to have fun surrounded by Airedales and the people who love them. The development of the Nationals into a 3-day weekend full of hunt tests, workshops, and fun events is an effort to have something for everyone, no matter your level of experience or interest. You don’t have to be hunter to enjoy Hunting/Working Airedales, but as your Airedale pulls you through the weekend, you may well appreciate how strong the hunter’s heart beats in most Airedales. On a “people” level, this club makes an effort to welcome newcomers as well as welcome back Airedalers returning after some time. From the start of weekend at Thursday’s Hospitality Evening; through the Annual Meeting to be held at a new time this year at 4:30 pm on Friday at Holly Hills; to our famed Banquet and Auction evening on Saturday evening, you’ll have many chances for getting-to-know-you conversations and, we suspect, some laughter and Airedale story-telling. Thank you for joining in our 30th Anniversary Nationals! And a very special Thank You to all who have contributed time, talent, money, and hard work to make this weekend so special. So check the weekend’s schedule in this catalog, and let’s go have some fun! Chris Halvorson HWA President 30th Annual Airedale Field Nationals 6 Welcome to the Airedale Field Nationals The Airedale came to America shortly after its development in England in the last half of the 19th century. In the first part of the 20th century, Americans’ appreciation of the Airedale’s hunting heritage was summarized in 1916 by Warren H. Miller (longtime editor of Field and Stream) in his classic book The American Hunting Dog. “On the borderline between the bird dog and the fur dog stands the Airedale,” Miller wrote, “…the dog that can hunt both … and the one who can and is being successfully trained to hunt everything alive that can be hunted.” The Airedale enjoyed widespread popularity in America at the start of the 20th century. In addition to its hunting abilities, the breed’s reputation built on its fame as a war dog in WWI and its exploits as a big game hunter in the American West. Over time, demographics and society changed, and Airedale popularity shifted to a much smaller fan base who maintained the breed mainly as companions and home protectors. On this 30th Anniversary of the HWA Nationals, we celebrate the movement among Airedale fanciers to restore attention to the breed’s original purpose as a versatile hunting and working dog, and to prove that the Airedale still maintains the breed’s original instincts and abilities. Airedale Terriers may now compete in AKC Spaniel Hunt Tests and UKC-based Hunting Retriever Club [HRC] Hunt Tests, as well as Airedale-only hunt tests. Your participation in these Airedale field events shows us your understanding that Airedale inclinations go way beyond the couch and backyard. Thank you for being here! I have had some great dogs over the years. I have been involved with HWA for over 25 years and have judged in a number of categories. I look forward to seeing many of my old friends and meeting new ones, also seeing some great dogs. Once you have owned an Airedale you will always have a special place in your heart for them. Chris Halvorson My husband Tom and I discovered the Hunting/Working Airedale movement in the early 1990s. I got so excited about seeing Airedales work that I started snapping photos of them and haven’t stopped since. For many years I was a pro photographer specializing in the conformation dogs and hunting Airedales. With the retirement of our photography business, we have time to train our own Airedales. We have owned Airedales since 1976, with several conformation champions, obedience-titled dogs, and most fun of all, hunting titles. I now serve as president of HWA, Inc. 14 Judge’s Biographies (Continued) Upland Judges John Dudash I live northeast of Gahanna, Ohio with my two English Springer Spaniels (Shiny and Rainy) my Brittany (Windy) and my wife. I have been an avid hunter and fisherman since my teens, in other words a long time. I got my first Springer, Shiny, about 6 years ago and started training with Brent LeMaster and the Ohio Valley English Springer Club about the same time. Shiny and I finished our senior title and master title within a year, having skipped the junior title. The jump from senior to master was not easy and we did not get a leg from the first master events, and it took two events to get that last leg. Shiny and I are now working on Master Advanced; we have two legs towards that title. I have started with my second Springer, Rainy, participating in field trials. I am relatively new I have learned what it takes to be successful, when to reward success, and when to encourage and praise effort. I am looking forward to seeing the dogs and handlers work and having fun. Salvatore (Sam) Stazzone I’m a life-long resident of northern Ohio, and I’ve been hunting since I got my first .410 shotgun when I was 8 years old. I spent 6-8 years with Foxhounds and Coonhounds, then the next 30 years with Labs. For the last 13 years, my interest has been in hunting and participating in field trials with English Springer Spaniels. I’ve been participating and judging hunter trials for about 10-15 years. I’ve been an AKC judge licensed to judge Upland Hunt Tests for about a year. My newest dog is a Cocker Spaniel pup named Snookey. 15 Judge’s Biographies (Continued) Retriever Judges Leslie Phillips I have always been interested in nature and the out-of-doors. Following my B.S., M.S. in Natural Resources from O.S.U., I spent 34 years with Columbus Metro Parks as a Naturalist, Ranger, and Assistant Park Manager. In 1992 I got my first Flat-Coated Retriever and really started a hobby with dog competition such as obedience, agility, show, and hunt testing. I am now starting on my 6th Flat-Coated Retriever, and while I am not as active with the other venues, I still love the training, competition, and social interaction involved in hunt testing. Becoming an A.K.C. Hunt Test Judge helped so much in my dog training. I still hunt over my dogs as well. 16 Judge’s Biographies (Continued) Ed Zawodny I started hunting with my father a long time ago when I was 10 years old. We had dogs nearly all of my life, but I only discovered hunting with retrievers about 20 years ago when a friend, with a well trained retriever, invited me to go duck hunting. That day got me hooked on retrievers. Competing and hunting with retrievers has since become a passion. In 2001, my wife and I got our first Flat-Coated Retriever, and the rest is history. We currently have 2 Flat-Coats that I upland and waterfowl hunt with. But, we also compete in Conformation, Obedience and Field with these same dogs. Both dogs have titles in all three areas, all owner trained and handled. I started judging retriever events about 10-years ago. I am currently: AKC licensed hunt test judge for all levels (Junior, Senior and Master), UKC licensed hunt test judge for the Started level and soon to be at the Seasoned level and approved to judge breed field events (WC, WCI, WCX) for Flat-Coats, Goldens, Labs, Nova Scotia Duck Tollers. 17 Judge’s Biographies (Continued) Workshop Presenter Bridget Bodine Bridget has had a lifelong career with animals. She started working with Hunter/Jumper horses, working for notables such as Tiffany Teeter (Traurig) and Harry Duce, in Bucks County, PA. Her 25 year career in dogs started when she started worked with top professional show dog handlers Greg and Kim Strong. Bridget started as a show assistant and quickly moved to obedience training and then to kennel manager. After numerous years with Greg and Kim, Bridget chose to apprentice with Mary Williams at High Tide Kennels to learn more about retriever and gun dog training. From 2001 to 2008 Bridget worked with DeCoverly as Kennel Manager and head Trainer, training pointing dogs, retrievers and all breed obedience. Bridget has been training retrievers for 20 years and has titled numerous JH, SH and several MH dogs in the AKC hunt test program as well as teaching clients how to train their own dogs to these same levels. She and her dog Crosby, recently ran their very first retriever field trial at the qualifying stake and got second place out of a 31 dog entry, which qualified Crosby to run all age events. www.decoverlykennels.com www.sighttosealabs.com 18 Incentive/Memorial Awards Trophies Since 1995 perpetual awards have been given to encourage Airedales to train and participate in the Airedale Hunt Test Program. The following awards have all been tendered by long time supporters of the Airedale Hunting Test Program and are to honor noteworthy dogs that attended the workshops and experimental hunting tests over the years. Joan Shea Gordon Memorial Award Sandhill Brown Bess Memorial Award Priscilla Cree Memorial Award Gunners’ Choice Award 19 Incentive/Memorial Awards Trophies Joan Shea Gordon Memorial Award This special award is given to the Airedales that pass all three hunting tests (Upland, Retrieving, and Fur) at one Hunting Working Nationals.
