Teutoburger Wald (Teutoburg Forest)
The Teutoburg Forest defines the Bielefeld cityscape.
Rising to 446 metres, this mountain range is chiefly
famous for the Battle of Teutoburg Forest which took
place in the year 9 AD between the Romans and the
Teutons. One of Germany’s most picturesque hiking trails,
the Hermannsweg, runs along the ridge of the Teutoburg
Forest and right through Bielefeld city centre. This attractive and varied municipal park landscape comprises a
total of 4,800 hectares of forest and 580 km of hiking trails.
Hiking and Cycling
The city itself and the Teutoburg Forest are crisscrossed by walking trails. The 162 km Hermannsweg,
leading from Rheine to Horn-Bad Meinberg via Bielefeld, and the 89 km Wappenweg round Bielefeld can
be walked in stages. For one-day walks there are lots
of other circular hiking paths, nature trails and scenic
routes that provide opportunities to explore Bielefeld
and its surrounding area.
Cycling is a very good way of getting around Bielefeld
and seeing the sights of the city and nearby countryside. The Teutoburg Forest, the Ravensberg Land and
extensive green spaces like the Obersee are ideal for
one-day tours centred on Bielefeld, along circular
routes such as the BI 1 - BI 10.
The Tourist Information Centre can supply maps for
walkers and cyclists and provide detailed information.

Heimat-Tierpark Olderdissen (Olderdissen Zoo)
Started by the town forester as a place to rear roe
deer fawns, Olderdissen Zoo nestles in the attractive
landscape of the Teutoburg Forest. This 15-hectare
site opened in 1930 is home to about 450 animals of
100 different species in a woodland setting with meadows and ponds. The zoo has an excellent record for
breeding rare animals threatened with extinction. A
popular destination for families and children, the zoo
is open all year round and entry is free. The brown
bear enclosure is a big attraction for visitors.

Bielefeld’s biggest square has had a facelift. The redesign has transformed a drab, marginal square into

Japanischer Garten (Japanese Garden)
The Japanese Garden in the district of Gadderbaum
was opened in 2003. This garden was designed to be
looked at and is laid out as a kare san sui dry landscape garden. Visitors experience this garden through
their eyes – this idealised landscape is not made for
walking through. In keeping with Japanese tradition
the wooden entrance gate symbolises the gate of
Heaven and is very seldom opened. Stylistically, the
garden belongs to the early Edo period (1603-1868),
the latter years of the austere zen garden.

ENJOY!
Waldhotel Brand’s Busch is situated in
the heart of the picturesque
Teutoburg Forest but is only 3km
from Bielefeld’s Old Town.
A relaxing 20-minute walk along the
Hermannsweg trail directly outside the
hotel takes you to Bielefeld’s landmark
Sparrenburg Castle, with its panoramic
views over the town.
Obersee (Obersee Lake and Viaduct)
This 80-hectare recreational area with an 18-hectare
lake was created in the early nineteen-eighties as part
of a major rainwater retention scheme. Cycle paths
and walking trails radiate out from the lake, with
attractive views from the highest points of the area
across the district of Schildesche towards the Teutoburg Forest. The present-day Cologne-Berlin railway
line crosses the imposing Schildesche Viaduct, built
when Bielefeld was connected to the Cologne-Minden
Railway in 1847.

Historisches Museum
(Museum of History)
The Museum of History tells the
story of Bielefeld and the surrounding area from the city’s
foundation in 1214 to the present
day in a vivid and lively way. The
focus of the exhibition remains
the history of industrialisation
in and around Bielefeld. The museum itself is housed in one of
the principal starting-points of
that development, the restored
buildings of the former Ravensberg Spinning Mill. In that setting,
original machinery and products
from the main branches of industry – such as the famous Bielefeld
sewing machines and bicycles,
and products made by the firm of
Dr. Oetker – along with artefacts
of working-class culture and the
middle classes illustrate the working methods and lifestyles of the
city’s population.

BauernhausMuseum
(Museum of Rural Life)
This museum of rural life not only
won a Special Commendation in
the European Museum of the Year
Award 2001, it is also Germany’s
oldest open-air museum and was
established on the Ochsenheide
hill in Bielefeld in 1917. The Möllering farmhouse dating from 1590
was brought over from Rödinghausen and rebuilt on this site with
generous voluntary, private and
public support. Also on the site
are a bakehouse (1764), a store
house (1795), a windmill (1686),
and a flax mill (1826) which together paint a picture of farm life
in the Ravensberg area up to the
mid-nineteenth century. A barn
(1807) houses the café, while a
former craftsman’s house (1568)
contains educational activities for
children.

namu – natur I mensch I umwelt
(Museum of Nature, Mankind
and the Environment)
The concept underlying the
Extinction – Survival exhibition
turns the conventional sequence
of natural history exhibitions
(past – present – future) on its
head. In this museum the visitor
travels into the future and looks
back through the years at our
present day. Dozens of animals all
threatened by human activity and
preserved in a chilled showcase
line the visitor’s route. Fossilised
contemporary witnesses invite
us to learn from the lessons of
the past. The vaulted cellar of the
museum houses a unique mining
gallery, where visitors can find
out how geologists unravel the
human influence on Planet Earth
as a system. There is an extensive
programme of educational activities for children and adults and
the Museum also hosts children’s

MUSEUMS
Museum Wäschefabrik
(Linen Works Museum)
Tucked away in the courtyard of
the houses at 48 and 50 Viktoriastraße is a former linen works
which in the nineteen-nineties
was turned into a museum unique
in Germany. It was built in 1913
for a Jewish businessman, Hugo
Juhl, to manufacture table linen
and bed linen, ladies’ underwear
and men’s shirts. In 1938, the political situation prompted him to
sell the firm. It was taken over by
the Winkel brothers and production continued on this site until
the nineteen-eighties. The factory
stood idle for a few years before
it was purchased in 1993 by the
Förderverein Projekt Wäschefabrik e. V. association with funding
from the North Rhine-Westphalia
Foundation. The old factory, still
with its original equipment, is now
open to visitors and changing exhibitions are staged here.

Deutsches Fächer Museum /
Barisch Stiftung
(German Fan Museum)
The small but delightful German
Fan Museum is located in the heart
of the old town. Visitors are invited
to explore the cultural history of the
fan. The new exhibition which opens
in mid-February 2015 features luxury fans made in Paris, among
other things. There are exhibits by
the prestigious fan maker Maison
Alexandre, along with French treasures from Maison Duvelleroy.
These fan leaves were often decorated by the well-known artist Billotey, a consummate master of flower
painting on the semicircle. The museum is also showing fans recently
donated to the Barisch Stiftung
from Bavarian castles that demonstrate the Wittelsbach family’s love
for flowers and animals, especially
dogs. Another special exhibition
centres on objects made from gleaming mother-of-pearl. By popular

Bielefeld University
An interdisciplinary approach, emphasis on research
and an international outlook are the hallmarks of
Bielefeld University, in fields ranging from the arts and
social sciences to natural sciences and technology. The
university has more than 21,500 students enrolled in
more than 105 courses at 13 faculties. The Centre for
Interdisciplinary Research (ZiF) attracts international
experts from all over the world. Founded in 1969 as a
research institution, the university moved away from
its pure research remit in the nineteen-nineties with
the introduction of applications-oriented disciplines,
for example in the Faculties of Technology and Health
Science. The university has established an excellent
reputation in specific areas of research and teaching,
not only in the arts and social sciences but also in natural
sciences and technology. The excellence cluster, the
postgraduate school and postgraduate colleges that
have sprung up and the special research fields are all
visible proof of this success. The courses lead to internationally recognized bachelor’s and master’s degrees.

Kongress- und Eventzentrum Stadthalle Bielefeld
As a multifunctional conference and events centre
with adjoining hotel, Stadthalle Bielefeld is the hub
of Bielefeld’s events sector and sets new standards
for all types of meetings, conferences and seminars.
Situated right next to Bielefeld’s main railway station,
the Bielefeld Convention Center with its striking architecture is a prominent example of a modern urban building
in a prime city-centre location. With two halls and
nine conference rooms, spacious foyers and the very
latest conference equipment, Stadthalle Bielefeld can
provide 4,500 sq. m of events space – the ideal setting
for conferences, exhibitions, corporate events and
entertainment. There is seating capacity for up to 2,200
people for conferences and up to 4,500 for concerts.
The opening of the new 3,000 sq. m open-plan exhibition and events hall in autumn 2010 has added lots of
additional event options to the facilities available at
Stadthalle Bielefeld. The exhibition space is designed
for showcasing companies’ products and current trade
fair themes as well as providing the perfect setting for
conferences and accompanying sector exhibitions and
events, shows and activities. A link bridge enables the
new hall to be used in conjunction with the Stadthalle
or on its own, as desired.
Bielefeld is the regional shopping capital, with a big
choice of outlets making it equally popular with visitors
and locals. An attractive pedestrian precinct runs from
the main railway station to Sparrenburg Castle. The
city’s many shopping streets and arcades make this
a strollers’ and shoppers’ paradise. For refreshment
in between there are plenty of inviting street cafes,
bistros and restaurants. The big department stores and
multiples are concentrated in and around Bahnhofstraße. The area round Alter Markt contains a number of
specialist shops and luxury boutiques.

Einfach frei im Kopf
Detlef Kropp | Niederlassungsleiter
Eine Frage der Haltung
Was dient dem unternehmerischen Fortschritt?
