REGION I
Winter 2008
Director's Message
Welcome to 2008!
This is my first official Director’s message and I am honored to be your new Director. First off, we all need to give Margaret Rich a
big Thank You for her leadership in this Region and her tireless dedication to the Arabian Horse. As you can see by the length of this
message, we are already busy. The Region has a lot of exciting things planned for the first quarter of 2008 and lots of opportunities for
those who would like to get involved!
Our first regional meeting will be January 19th at Green Acres Ranch in Temecula. We will be discussing the budgets and plans for our
year. If you can, please plan to attend the meeting and participate in the lively discussions.
Youth Clinic and Youth meeting – There will be a Showmanship Clinic at Cal Poly Pomona on January 20th. The clinic will feature Rick
Nab, renowned Showmanship coach. Our youth director, Gloria Onatekemnitz will be having her Region 1 youth meeting on the 20th
as well, She will have speakers on Youth Team Tournament and the Regional Scholarships. For more information on the clinic or the
meeting, contact either Gloria Onatekemnitz – [email protected] or Kathy Callahan-Smith – [email protected].
Equine Affaire - January 31st – Feb 3rd is Equine Affaire, Jean and Barb are planning lots of fun things for this event. They are in need of
volunteers as well. If you are interested in helping out or have a horse that would be a great ambassador at the event, please contact
either Jean – [email protected] or Barb – [email protected]. They can’t do it alone, so please try and give them a helping hand. It’s
a lot of fun too!
Region 1 Show – The show committee is working hard on the Regional Show and have some very exciting things planned for this year’s
show. The pre-show is back by popular demand! It will be a single day pre-show on Wednesday, May 28th. The Progressive Dinner will
be returning as well and will be held on Friday night, if you would like to participate in the dinner, please let me know. You can bring your
own food for the progressive dinner or we can link you up with a caterer. In addition, we will be introducing a new payback program for
12 classes at the show. We will be giving either an award (saddle, gift certificate) or $1,000 to 12 classes. Look for more information
on this program in the premium book. Speaking of the premium book – it will have a new look this year as well. It will be printed and
distributed with the Modern Arabian Horse magazine. Look for it bundled with the Feb/March issue of the magazine.
AHA Convention, by now you probably have read about the resolutions that passed at the 2007 convention, so I won’t go over all of
them again. Two resolutions that will affect those members who show – the halter scoring system will be going into effect April 1, 2008.
And, we have returned to the MOS scoring system for Regional and National Shows.
AHA Convention bid – we have formed a committee to look into the feasibility of hosting an AHA convention. The committee members
are: Mary Ann Hughes, Darlene Barrett, Diana Bein and Rose Marie Henry. If you are interested in participating, please contact any
one of the members.
Website – We have a newly redesigned website with a CALENDAR!! All of the Regional activities, plus shows and club activities can
be put on the calendar. Please let me know if you would like to have your club’s activities placed there. We are looking to expand the
website and utilize it considerably more in the future. The website address is: www.aharegionone.org
In closing, I personally would like to thank Margaret for her dedication and all of the volunteers that we have in this Region for their
continued support and time. Without you we would have no Region and because of you we have the best Region in the Country!
Thanks!
Nancy

Wickenburg Desert Forest Competitive Trail Ride
On March 14-16, 2008 there will be a N.A.T.R.C. (North American Trail Ride Conference) sanctioned competitive
trail ride at The Everett Bowman Rodeo Grounds in Wickenburg, Arizona. This ride is AHA recognized ride, so
bring your sweepstakes nominated Arabian and your up to date competition card and win points!
A competitive trail ride is not a race. Riders need to stay within their minimum and maximum time to finish the
course. There will be check points along the trail to let you know if you need to speed up or slow down. Both
horses and riders are judged and a scorecard for both horse and rider are given to the rider at the end of the ride.
Horses are judged on conditioning, soundness, way of going and manners. Riders are judged on equitation as
it applies to trail riding, safety, in hand presentation and care of their horse at camp. Horses will be tied to their
trailers overnight.
Pulse and respiration (P & R) stops along the trail monitor the ability of the horse to handle the stress of the ride. On this ride, all P & R stops will
be done after a mandatory distance. Horse water is provided in camp and on the trail.
This event is limited to 60 riders. The Open division will ride approximately 30 miles on Saturday and the 24 miles on Sunday at a pace of 5 miles
per hour. The Competitive Pleasure (C.P.) division will ride approximately 20 miles on Saturday and 15 on Sunday at a pace of 3.5 to 4 miles per
hour. Novice division is one day, Saturday, and will ride approximately 20 miles at a pace of 3.5 to 4 miles per hour. The horse must be at least 4
years old, 5 years old for the Open division. Junior riders must be at least 10 years of age.
There will be awards for all 1st Place horses and 1st Place riders, over all High Point horse and rider and ribbons through 6th Place in all classes.
Hi-Point Breed awards will be given and special awards donated by sponsors.
The wildflowers should be in full bloom and the trails will be spectacular. Trails will be a combination of sandy washes, rocky canyons and the
winding desert terrain. “Come Ride With Us!” and enjoy a fun and challenging weekend for both horse and rider. This is a great family event!
For entry forms contact the Secretary, Beni DeMattei at (480) 892-4120 or by email at [email protected]. You may also contact the Ride
Manager Rochelle Gribler (623) 925-9202 or by email at [email protected].
