WE ALWAYS LOOK FORWARD TO THE OUR
ANNUAL VISIT TO THE BEAUTIFUL
WESTERN CAPE
“Welcome to the Toyota Cape Dealer Rally. It is
always a pleasure working with the Cape rally
fraternity,Toyota South Africa and Toyota Dealers.
This year’s event has again undergone some changes with
proceedings starting at Malmesbury Toyota on Thursday
evening. On Friday all the action will be concentrated around
McCarthy Toyota Killarney Gardens for the start of the event
before moving onto Killarney Race Track and Imperial Toyota
CapeGate for the days four special stages providing
spectators and sponsors compact and exciting rallying and the
opportunity to meet the heroes who provide all the action.
On Saturday the event will be run over traditional gravel
rally stages with a lot of tension in the air as crews do battle
for top honours.
We always enjoy our
annual visit to the beautiful
Western Cape and we look
forward to another
excellent round of the
championship.
Once again we thank Toyota South Africa for their
generous support. Toyota is a long-time partner of rallying and,
together with our other partners - Dunlop, Ford, Sasol and
Volkswagen – make an important contribution to the sport in
South Africa.

TOYOTA CAPE DEALER RALLY IS A PIVOTAL EVENT IN THIS YEAR’S
CHAMPIONSHIP
The Toyota Cape Dealer Rally is
Matthew Vacy-Lyle (Fragram Toyota Etios S1600) just 4.5
points further back. So only seven points separate the top
three crews in the class!
For us, having Toyota products in first and third place in
both championships is testament to the legendary reliability of
our products. We are also proud to be fielding two defending
class champions, in the form of Leeroy Poulter (S2000) and
Guy Botterill (S1600), with Dakar veteran Giniel de Villiers
campaigning our second Castrol Team Toyota Yaris S2000.
Castrol Team Toyota is also in the unique position to be
fielding two female navigators, with defending champion
Elvéne Coetzee reading the notes for Poulter; and Carolyn
Swan doing the same for de Villiers. Both these ladies come
from families with strong motorsport ties – Elvéne’s father
Kassie was himself a motorsport champion, while Carolyn’s
father was the legendary motorsport photographer, Roger.
The title fight in the Swartland is a rally fan’s dream, and we
look forward to two days of extremely entertaining rally
action. But while it may be entertaining to the crowds, rallying
is part of the Toyota SA’s heritage, and as such we are hoping
for a good Toyota result in both classes.
We would also like to thank the local land-owners who
have made it possible for us to bring the amazing sport of
rallying to the Western Cape. We are also grateful to the
marshals and organisers for their hard work; as well as the
South African National Rally Commission for enabling us to
show off our products in this exciting sport.
undeniably one of the most scenic
events on the South African
National Rally Championship
calendar. Set in the Swartland near
Malmesbury, the stunning setting
makes it easy to forget that the
2015 championship is balanced on a
knife-edge. With Castrol Team
Toyota currently leading the title
fight, as well as holding steady in
third place, the Toyota Cape Dealer
Rally is a pivotal event in this year’s
championship, and Toyota South Africa Motors is proud to
host this penultimate round.
With six rounds behind us, and only one more round to
follow the Toyota Cape Dealer Rally, the eyes of motorsport
fans from all over South Africa will be on the Swartland, as
championship leaders Leeroy Poulter and navigator Elvéne
Coetzee (Castrol Team Toyota Yaris S2000) take on
championship contenders Mark Cronje and his new navigator
Gerhard Snyman (Ford Performance Fiesta S2000). Only
seven points separate the two – Cronje a former champion,
and Poulter the defending champion.
While Poulter and Cronje lead the Class S2000 title
standings, a three-way battle is under way in Class S1600, for
front-wheel-drive rally cars, with engines of 1,600 cc. Toyota
also leads this charge, with defending class champion Guy
Botterill and navigator Simon Vacy-Lyle (Yato Toyota Etios
S1600) edging ahead after a victory on the previous round of
the championship. They have Paul Franken (Manitou
Volkswagen Polo S1600) just 2.5 points behind them, with

MEET OUR TEAM
GLYN HALL
Team Principal, Castrol Team
Toyota
Glyn Hall’s motorsport career started
in the United Kingdom after he joined
Chrysler United Kingdom as a
student apprentice in 1975. He
progressed through many
departments in the company during
his training, but it was the
competitions department headed up
by Des O’Dell (who was on the design
team for the iconic Ford GT 40) that
captured his imagination the most.
He joined the competitions
department on completion of his
training and enjoyed what he
describes as “three great years”.This
period enabled him to meet many
influential people in his life such as
Tony Pond, Henri Toivonen and Jean
Todt, to name but a few, as well as to
be involved in the prototype Lotus
Sunbeam rally car.
Hall blossomed in South Africa, a
country the quiet Briton adopted in
1980 when he came here as a 22-yearold to work for Geoff Mortimer
1
Motorsport.Tony Pond was driving for
Mortimer at the time as well as his
European commitments.
Today, Hall can look back on a
distinguished contribution to the
history of motorsport in South Africa
and a career full of achievements,
which have placed him at the very
forefront of motorsport management
in this country.
A former South African National
Rally Champion himself, Hall knows
what it takes to compete at the
highest levels. As such his undeniable
skill as an engineer and race car
developer has paid dividends, with
Castrol Team Toyota occupying two of
the top three positions in this year’s
rally title fight so far.
MEET OUR TEAM
LEEROY POULTER
Driver: South African National Rally Championship
and Donaldson Cross-Country Championship
Leeroy Poulter has crammed an amazing 29 years of active
motorsport experience into his life. His motorsport
experience began on two wheels in age-group motocross
championships in 1986. He won his first national
motocross championship in 1987, just his second year of
competition, and went on to win another four
championships in the following six years. He graduated to
karting in 1994.
A host of racing formulas
followed, including karting and
circuit racing, with an
impressive number of
championship wins added in the
process. For 2010, he moved
across to the national rally
championship to contest Class
A6 in a Toyota RunX. Such was
his success in the RunX that he
was able to secure the class
championship with two rounds remaining.
He then moved up to the top S2000 class in a Castrol
Team Toyota Auris S2000 for the remaining two events in
the 2010 national championship. He acquitted himself well
with a ninth and a third place.
He enjoyed a memorable first full season in the top class
in 2011 with Elvéne Coetzee, winning two rounds and
several stages. At the end of the season, he had the
distinction of being seeded number one among all the
drivers.
The versatile driver has competed on the Dakar twice,
and secured the 2014 South
African National Rally
Championship with one round
to spare. Poulter is currently
leading the title chase again,
though the 2015 season is still
balanced on a knife-edge.
ELVÉNE COETZEE
Navigator: South African
National Rally
Championship
Elvéne Coetzee has rallying in
her genes. The Coetzee name
is engrained in South African
rally history, with Elvéne’s
father a driver of note in the 70s and 80s. Elvéne, in fact,
lists her most memorable rally as the 2008 Belfast Rally as
navigator for her father.
She began her rally career during 2006, as navigator for
Johann van der Merwe, who campaigned a Toyota Tazz in
regional championship. In just her fifth rally, Elvéne
navigated Johann to a win in the PMC Regional Rally.
In 2011, she joined the Castrol Toyota team as co-driver
to Leeroy Poulter in an S2000
Toyota Auris. They won two
events and were in contention in
each of the other rounds.
In 2013, she and Poulter
campaigned the new Yaris rally
car in Castrol colours and
although they came close to
winning at least two rounds, they had to settle for sixth in
the championship and eight special stage wins.
Then came 2014 and the South African National Rally
Championship, which the pair won with one round the
spare. Coetzee became the first female navigator to win
the championship since 1960. The pair has won the last
three rounds of the 2015 championship, putting them in
the lead for this year’s title race.

GINIEL DE VILLIERS
Driver: South African National Rally Championship
Over the years Giniel de Villiers has become a household
name in South Africa, thanks to his multiple championship
wins in various racing
disciplines. The last 12 years has
also seen Giniel compete in the
grueling Dakar Rally, winning
the first South American event
in 2009. This propelled him to
international stardom, and he
has been a Red Bull athlete for
the last nine years.
In 2013, he teamed up with
experienced co-driver Greg Godrich in an Imperial Toyota
Yaris to contest the national rally championship. They
finished fourth in the championship, with a best result of
third in the Volkswagen Rally.
De Villiers replaced Hergen
Fekken as a works driver for
Castrol Team Toyota in 2015, and
is partnered with the highly
experienced navigator Carolyn
Swan. The pair has had an
exciting season, and are
currently in third place in the
overall standings.
CAROLYN SWAN
Navigator: South African
National Rally
Championship
Carolyn was born on
September 14, 1969, and is the
daughter of respected motor
racing photographer, the late
Roger Swan. She was exposed to motorsport at a very
early age and after years of watching racing with her father
she entered sealed-odometer rallies as a navigator in 1992.
She graduated to national rallies in 1994 and has been a
co-driver ever since. Today, she is one of South Africa’s
leading female co-drivers.
In 2012, she joined Elvéne Coetzee (co-driver to Leeroy
Poulter) in the factory Toyota Motorsport team to form a
unique all-woman navigating
partnership. She read the route
notes for Johnny Gemmell in a
class S2000 Team Castrol Toyota
Auris and the pair were
contenders for the title right up
to the final round of the year,
eventually finishing second after
two wins and three second places.
In 2014 she partnered with multiple South African
National Rally champion Hergen Fekken, who stepped into
Gemmell’s car after the latter retired from racing in order
to concentrate on his business interests. This year, Carolyn
reads the notes for Dakar veteran Giniel de Villiers, who
replaced Fekken at the start of the season.

MUSICAL CHAIRS IN THE FINAL THROES OF
THE 2015 SA NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP
GAME OF THRONES
A round of musical chairs has preceded the Toyota
Cape Dealer Rally, penultimate event in the 2015
National Rally Championship to be staged in the
Swartland area of the Western Cape on 18 and 19
September.
With the leading teams in this year’s game of thrones levelpegged after the Imperial Toyota Tshwane Motor Rally early
log leader Mark Cronje and the Ford Performance Rally team
announced that Cronje’s co-driver, the highly experienced and
decorated Robin Houghton, will step down for the remainder
of the season.
According to the release, Houghton’s decision was taken
“in an effort to reduce the weight of car and crew to help
improve Mark Cronje’s fight for the championship”.
It added that Houghton will still be involved in the running
of the team and work closely with Cronje’s new navigator, and
thanked and applauded Houghton for “his dedication and
selfless decision”.
Meanwhile it has been confirmed that Gerhard Snyman,
long-time navigator for Japie van Niekerk, will now fill the hot
seat next to Cronje to take on arch-rivals Leeroy Poulter and
Elvéne Coetzee (Castrol Team Toyota Yaris S2000) in the
Toyota Cape Dealer Rally.
With Snyman on duty in the official Ford Performance
entry and Van Niekerk, due to business commitments not
making the trip to the Western Cape, rally stalwart and exchampion Enzo Kuun will be taking his seat in the NAD Ford
Fiesta, directed by Kes Naidoo, who normally navigates for
Wilro Dippenaar in the NRC4 Class Northern City
Panelbeaters Toyota Auris.
The Namibian has decided not to participate in the Cape
event, leaving Naidoo free to partner with Kuun, who won the
SA national rally championship in 2006 for Volkswagen
together with Guy Hodgson. Interestingly Hodgson will
officiate as competitor liaison officer on the Cape event.
While the scoreboard may show Poulter and Coetzee
leading the championship with 79 points after their victory in
Tshwane – 7 points clear of Cronje – they are in reality even
in terms of points as they must drop their worst result – in
Poulter’s case the Secunda Motor Rally, and in Cronje’s the
Imperial Toyota Tshwane rally result.
Such is their dominance that with two events remaining
third-placed Giniel de Villiers and Carolyn Swan (Castrol Team
Toyota Yaris) – on 48.5 points – is the only other team still in
with a mathematical chance (after dropping their worst result)
of winning the championship.
Reigning champions Leeroy Poulter and Elvéne Coetzee
4
Mark Cronje with Gerhard Snyman reading the notes at this event
Giniel de Villiers and Carolyn Swan the only other team still in with a
mathematical chance of winning the championship.
The Dakar star is 7.5 points clear of the consistent Gugu
Zulu in his Volkswagen Sasolracing Polo– the only contender
besides Poulter/Coetzee to finish every rally up to this point
in the season –but with only two events remaining Zulu’s best
hope is to challenge De Villiers for third place in the driver’s
championship.
From Zulu there is a big points gap to team mates Henk
Lategan/Barry White (24 points), while Thilo Himmel/Armand
du Toit (Volkswagen Sasolracing Polo) is seventh, two points
ahead of team mate Hergen Fekken who did not participate in
the first two events of the year.
Gugu Zulu and Hilton Auffray has the podium firmly set in their sights
Last years’Toyota Cape Dealer Rally winners Guy Botterill and Simon VacyLyle
A repeat performance of the Imperial Toyota Tshwane Rally is what
Paulus Franken and Henry Kohne will be aiming for
The S1600 class also sees a change of seats, actually
even more, as it involves a change of cars for
championship contenders Matthew Vacy-Lyle and
Schalk van Heerden.
The pair, only seven points shy of log leaders and team
mates Guy Botterill and Simon Vacy-Lyle (Yato Tools Toyota
Etios R2), has secured the Electrothread Toyota Etios S1600
R2 of Chris Coertse for the Cape event after they
spectacularly rolled their Fragram Tools Etios S1600 R2 in the
Tshwane rally.
Botterill/Vacy-Lyle is only 2.5 points clear of the Imperial
Toyota Tshwane Motor Rally runners-up Paulus
Franken/Henry Kohne (Manitou Group VW Polo R2), so an
electrifying duel can be expected in the Swartland.
The seventh and penultimate round in the 2015
championship, supported by the Toyota and the Toyota dealers
in the Western Cape, will kick off with four tar stages on
Friday, 18 September, and eight gravel stages in and around
Malmesbury on Saturday, 19 September, for a total distance of
approximately 380 km.
Matthew Vacy-Lyle and Schalk van Heerden after a massive roll last
time out will be defending their claim to championship points in the
Toyota Etios belonging to Chris Coertse

PLEASE USE MAP TO ASSIST IN LOCATING SPECTATOR POINTS
We urge you to use the instruction and the map
rather than the GPS co-ordinates as quite often the
GPS will take you to the route of the special stage.
You cannot be at every spectator point so please
choose your preferred viewing points with the aid
of the map. Watch as many of the competitors as
possible.
The Organising Team and Route Director would
like to thank all the land owners who gave
permission to use their roads and for moving
livestock.
Also the numerous people working in the
background, controls, spectator marshals, radio
operators and officials without whose help the
Toyota Cape Dealer Rally would not be possible.
THANK YOU
