EXPERIENCE DISTINCTION, WITH DISCRETION
SOME HOTELS ARE SHOWY, although they have nothing to show
that we haven’t seen before. Others belong to big chains that endlessly
repeat the same tired formula. Then there are those rare jewels where
you are greeted like a friend and welcomed into their private and
exclusive realm.
The Marignan Hotel is one of those – bringing
a warm and personal dimension to luxury.
The friend who greets us is Nathalie Richard, at the helm of this hotel
since 2004; she was the one responsible for gradually remoulding its
identity into a contemporary residence. A townhouse in the heart of
Paris’s sophisticated Right Bank, where guests can drop in for a relaxed
drink, meal, or screening, and even enjoy a tailor-made stay.

A PARISIAN TOWNHOUSE
THE MARIGNAN STARTED LIFE
in the 18th century as a private
mansion and was used as an embassy before it became a Palace hotel
in the 1920s. Nowadays it has regained the air of a private residence.
The words ‘May this house be filled with real
friends’ were inscribed in the 19th century on
the grand staircase – and Nathalie Richard
seems to have taken the motto for her own.
In ten years she has transformed the hotel into a place with real soul,
warm and protective, with the help of architect Pierre Yovanovitch.
This was his first hotel commission and Nathalie Richard chose him for
his fresh approach and his gift for interpreting Parisian architecture.
The pair emphasised the building’s unique features to revitalise the
hotel, collaborating with artisans whose work also respects French style
codes. Because of the unusual volumes from the first to the seventh
floors, each room and suite had to be treated as a separate project.
The ground floor bar and restaurant now have the air of a spacious
salon and winter garden, with the reception area as a huge entrance
hall. Custom-made furniture mingles with works of art and designer
objects, carefully matched to create a graphic style that exudes a
contemporary, natural luxury. This is where one comes to recover from
the heady sensations of Paris, rather than take in more.

SUITE PARISIENNE
WHETHER it’s a split-level layout or a balcony framed by Art Deco columns, every
room in the Marignan has its own uniquely charming feature. As for the five-star
suites, they are simply superb. The ones on the sixth and seventh floors boast vast
outdoor terraces overlooking the romantic rooftops of Paris and the Eiffel Tower.
On the first and second floors, the suites’ full-height 4-metre doors give a foretaste
of the grandiose bedrooms and living rooms beyond.
The clean lines of the interiors emphasize

eager to return. A thousand little touches
add to this feeling of belonging here. Large
well-lit walk-in closets; easy-to-reach,
unobtrusive electric sockets; a bottle of
your favourite spirit on a coffee table; a
carefully selected room fragrance – all
these pleasant little details count. Although
the walls here certainly don’t have ears,

SECRET GARDEN
TUCKED BETWEEN THE CHAMPS ÉLYSÉES AND THE
AVENUE MONTAIGNE, the Marignan appears to turn its back on
the city. Its elegant façade is as intimidating as one of New York’s swanky
apartment blocks with doormen in the lobby.
This ensures that the inner circle of habitués is
kept safe from intrusion. Businesspeople, fashionistas, film celebrities and clued-in Parisians
know about this secret garden where culture
and comfort meet.

REDISCOVER NATURE IN A RESTAURANT
SUFFUSED IN NATURAL LIGHT FROM ITS CEILING
WINDOWS, the Canopée restaurant – open at lunchtime – feels even
more like a lush jungle now that artist Julien Colombier has created
a fresco of plants around the walls. His luxuriant greenery sets off the
décor and its eclectic furniture, carefully selected with the help of the
Galerie Stéphane Olivier. The verdant mood is a perfect foil for the
natural wholesomeness of Emilie Villon’s dishes. The thirty-something chef,
hailing from Provence and trained under Alain Ducasse, brings her own
signature to menus that nevertheless retain the best of French tradition.
Ingredients are chosen with infinite care,
judiciously combined, seasoned just so and
cooked to perfection.
Her personal touch can be felt in the passion for vegetables, whose
wealth of flavours artfully balance meat and fish dishes that follow the
changes of the seasons.

A RIGHT BANK BAR
IT’S NOT EVERY DAY that you come across a place in Paris where you feel as
comfortable as you do in your own living room. The Marignan bar offers this cosy
feeling without losing any sense of privacy. The volumes are open but, due to the
layout and furniture, guests can still enjoy intimate conversations. Business breakfasts,
afternoon tea to take a break from shopping, after-work cocktails, snacks or dinner
– the bar lends itself to everyday scenes of relaxation, just as it is often the setting
for exceptional moments. DJ sessions, piano concerts and fashion shows regularly
spice up the casual chic vibe of this venue where the fashionable circles of this
prestigious Paris quartier meet and mingle.
Enjoy an informal lunch of
salade du jour or choose from
a range of snacks that can be
ordered until 10 pm. The evening
menu is more extensive, including
platters of hors d’oeuvres to
accompany your apéritifs.
Sample France’s most succulent
regional specialities on themed
platters showcasing the cuisine
of the North, South, East or West
of the country.
THE MARIGNAN EXTRA:
SPECIALI-TEAS AND ALL-DAY
LIGHT MEALS
The Marignan bar offers a
second teatime, starting in the
early evening. The capital cities
of the world inspire an à la carte
menu of original cocktails based
on delicate infusions, and the
bar revisits its classic drinks using
various types of tea to open up
new fields of flavour.
Delicious light refreshments are
also available at all times.

has created her hotel as a venue for
constant happenings, paying tribute to
all the arts, especially film – there’s even
a screening room. It is in high demand for
interviews and by cinema professionals
who want to watch rushes or screen films
before a select audience. Hotel guests
also have discretionary use of it. This little
luxury characterises the overall philosophy of the Marignan – it is not simply a
place to sleep, it is a place brimming
with liveliness, which shows just what a
hotel can be.

3 QUESTIONS FOR NATHALIE RICHARD NATHALIE RICHARD has had her heart set on running a hotel for a long time.
Already as she was completing her studies in international business, she was
dreaming of bringing the hotel trade into her family business. Having gained her
spurs as head of several brasseries in the Maison Richard chain, she led the 2004
buy-out of the Hôtel Marignan and set about bringing it back to life. The spirit of
the place inspired her and she developed a vision for its future by delving into the
history of the hotel. Her concept was to bring it back towards the historic identity
of a classic French hôtel particulier or private mansion, where she could share
her love of the arts – from contemporary design to cinema – and also a quest for
luxury, where every single detail is top quality.
WHAT’S YOUR DEFINITION OF LUXURY?
First of all, luxury is
really selling a dream,
because there are
no objective criteria –
unlike quality, which
is a tangible value.
This project was
above all a quest
for refinement,
elegance, beauty
and rarity, in order
to create a universe
of desirableness and
pleasure.
