Bergen’s Best
Bergen has 260 000 inhabitants and is the second largest city in Norway.
It is situated in Hordaland on the west coast, which is well known for its
many fjords and mountains. Surrounded by seven mountains, wild nature
and spectacular views are never far away, even from the city center.
Bergen has a long Hanseatic tradition and the characteristic Hanseatic
wharf, Bryggen, is a World Heritage Site.
Bergen city center is quite compact and everything is within walking
distance. There is no subway, and there is really no need to take the bus
between the different venues of the ALTE Meeting.
The best thing to do in Bergen is to walk around the narrow streets called
“smug” of Nordnes or Sandviken, stroll along Bryggen and watch the
sunset from Verftet. It is also worth to get a view of the city from above,
either from Fløyen which is easily reachable with the funicular,
(Fløybanen, leaving from the city center), or the tallest mountain, Ulriken,
which can be reached by a shuttle bus that takes you to the aerial
tramway, Ulriksbanen.
Transportation from the airport
Bus
The airport bus, Flybussen, leaves from right outside the airport (there is
just one terminal and one way out – it’s impossible to miss). The bus
leaves every 15 minutes and takes you to the city center. For most
delegates, Festplassen would be the best place to get off (just ask the
driver to tell you when you’re there). It takes about 25 minutes and costs
100,- NOK (1 € = 8,7 NOK). You can buy tickets on board with cash or
card, or beforehand at http://www.flybussen.no/en
Taxi
There are taxi ranks right outside the airport. But beware: taxis are quite
expensive! A taxi ride to the city center takes about 30 minutes and costs
400-500,-NOK one way. Unless you are four people travelling together,
the bus would be a better option. You can pay cash or with card.

Venues and Meeting Points
Venue for pre-conference workshops – 4th and 5th May
The pre-conference workshops on 4th-5th May will take place at Scandic
Bergen City Hotel, Håkonsgtaten 2.
Meeting Venue, 6th May
Beware that the ALTE Meeting Venue will be at different hotels on
Wednesday 6th and Thursday 7th May. The registration, official opening
and ALTE Meeting on Wednesday 6th May will take place at Scandic
Neptun Hotel in Valkendorfsgat 8.

Meeting Venue, 7th May
The ALTE-meeting on Thursday 7th May will take place at Scandic Bergen
City Hotel, Håkonsgtaten 2 (same place as the pre-conference
workshops).

Reception, 6th May, 7.30pm
The municipality of Bergen is hosting a reception on Wednesday 6th from
7.30pm till 8.30pm. The venue of the reception is Schøtstuene, Øvregaten
50. Meeting point: Den Blå Stein (The Blue Stone) at 7.00pm at the Ole
Bulls Plass (the name of the square). It is a 5 minute walk from the
Scandic Bergen City Hotel to Den Blå Stein, where someone from Vox will
be waiting for you to take you to the reception.

Guided tour, 7th May, 5.30pm
We have been very lucky to get the famous crime author Gunnar
Staalesen from Bergen to give us a guided tour on Thursday afternoon.
Gunnar Staalesen has written 17 crime novels about the Norwegian
detective Varg Veum. Several of the crime novels have been translated
into English (and some to French) and 12 of them have been made into
movies.
Gunnar Staalesen will pick you up at Scandic Bergen City Hotel at 5.30pm
and leave you by the funicular taking you to the Gala Dinner at Fløyen at
6.30pm. Please note that those attending the walking tour will have to go
directly from the tour to the gala dinner. There will not be time to go back
to your hotels after the tour. Someone from Vox will be accompanying you
from the tour to the Gala Dinner venue at Fløyen.

Gala Dinner at Fløien folkerestaurant, 7th May, 7pm
How to get to Fløien Folkerestaurant:
Fløybanen Funicular
Fløybanen leaves every 15 minutes (00, 15, 30, 45). The trip to the top
takes 5-6 minutes. To get there in time for the Gala Dinner, you should
take the funicular leaving at 6.30 pm or 6.45 pm from town. If you join
the Guided Tour, we will take you to the funicular straight after the Tour.
Walk up

Walk up
As an alternative to the funicular, one can walk up. It takes 1h 30m, if you
walk fast. It’s a pretty steep, pebbled road, so you will need good shoes.
Note that if you want to walk up, you will not be able to participate in the
Guided Tour.
Meeting Point: Den Blå Stein (see map page 8), 5.15pm. Someone from
Vox will meet you at Den Blå Stein and guide you to the top of Fløyen.
(PS: If it is raining too much, we will have to cancel the walk-up. We will
let you know during the day if this is the case).
Conference Day venue, 8th May
The ALTE Conference Day on 8th May will take place at Litteraturhuset i
Bergen, Østre Skostredet 5-7.
It is a 10-minute walk from the Scandic Bergen City Hotel to
Litteraturhuset i Bergen. Someone from VOX will meet you at Den Blå
Stein (see map page 11) at 8.20am and guide you to the Conference Day
venue.

Transportation to the airport
Bus
The airport bus, Flybussen, leaves from outside Radisson Blu Hotel Norge.
You can buy tickets on the bus stop or on board with cash or card. It costs
100 NoK. There are four departures each hour from Monday – Friday and
Sunday, and three each hour on Saturdays.

Taxi
You can either order a taxi at your hotel, or walk to one of the taxi stops.
You can also stop one on the street, or call 07000 or 08000. Prices from
Bergen center to the airport is 400-500 NOK. You can pay cash or by card.
