What’s SUP, Lake Geneva? No really, a lot of people have
been asking me “What’s SUP?” In case you’re among the group
that are wondering I am proud to tell you it is one of the fastest
growing water sports around. “SUP” is the rapidly popular water
activity of “Stand Up Paddle Boarding.”
Why is it such a big hit among locals and visitors? Stand up
paddle boarding is a rare activity that combines the fun and
amazement of standing up on the water while also allowing you
a full body work out (without even realizing it).
The combination of balancing and paddling provides your
body with muscle strengthening in your legs, butt, back, core,
shoulders and arms with very little stress and impact.
How to Get Started
Believe it or not paddle boarding is not only easier
than it looks, it’s accessible to every one of all
different skill levels and age groups.
The equipment needed to paddleboard is
usually a onetime purchase. When starting
the sport you need to buy a paddle, a
board, a leash, and a life jacket. There are many different types
and styles of boards and paddles. And it really depends on
where you are going to paddle, your experience, body type,
and how you will be using your board. I recommend going to
a specialty outdoor store so that they can help you pick the right
board and gear for you!
Rentals & Lessons
Before going out to buy all the equipment, learn how to
paddleboard from an expert! Clear Water is one of the most
qualified places to help you start. In the front of the store they
have functional and stylish outdoor clothing. The back of the store
is where they rent, instruct, and sell paddleboards and all the
accessories needed to get out on the water!
When you rent from Clear Water
Outdoor, their trained staff will assist
you in this process. It is always best to
call the store ahead of time to guarantee
a board for you. First, they will fit you
for your life jacket and paddle. Second,
they will pick out the right paddleboard
for you depending on
your experience. Wider
boards are more stable,
making it the perfect
board for those just
starting out. As one gains
experience the board
gets narrower, making
it unstable but also
faster. Then they will
walk you down to the
lake and give you a lesson on the basics
you need to start paddle boarding on the
beautiful Geneva Lake.
Adventures Beware
You will definitely fall in love with the
sport but you might actually “fall in love”.
I started paddle boarding three years
ago and introduced my girlfriend to the
sport. As we fell in love with paddle
boarding we also fell in love with each

other. Eventually I popped the question last July on Lake Geneva.
And yes we got engaged on our paddle boards!

Stand up paddle boarding is a great way to experience the
beautiful scenery around the lake! It is easy to learn and it offers
adventure seekers a great workout, great time and some one on
one time with the lake! Adventure is out there! Take a STAND and
enjoy it!
