PROGRAM DETAILS
The Education Program is designed to prepare
students for employment in Kentucky classrooms.
The Paraeducator Certificate is for individuals
seeking entry-level positions in Kentucky schools.
Paraeducators are school employees who work under
the supervision of teachers or
other professional practitioners.
Their jobs are instructional in
nature and they provide other
direct services to children and
youth and their families.
This is a 61 credit-hour program
designed for students interested in
preparing to become a teacher.
The Associate of Applied Science
Degree (AAS): Teacher Preparation
Option is for students wishing
to subsequently earn a teaching
degree at a four-year institution.
Both theory and practice are
emphasized by the program. A
field experience assignment is
conducted in each education
course that is offered.

Several colleges and universities
are part of the Teacher
Preparation 2+2 Partnership
Agreement to enhance the
number of qualified teachers
in Kentucky by establishing a
seamless pathway of transfer
between the KCTCS Teacher
Preparation Associate Degree and
a baccalaureate degree in the
field of education.
Somerset Community College and KCTCS have Teacher Preparation

ASSOCIATE IN APPLIED SCIENCE DEGREE:
•Education - Teacher Prep Track
(61-62 credit hours)
CAREER Opportunities:
Graduates of the Teacher Preparation
program may transfer into a bachelor’s
degree program or apply for jobs such as
teacher aide, teacher assistant, instructional
assistant, duty supervisor, classroom support
staff, paraprofessional, education assistant,
or assistant teacher.
GETTING STARTED:
This program admits students each semester
or bi-term:
•Complete an application for admission to
SCC.
•Ensure that your high school diploma or
GED records have been submitted to the
registrar’s office.
•Schedule a COMPASS exam session through
the assessment center and/or provide ACT
scores.
•Submit official transcripts from high school
and prior college attendance.
•Finally, after being notified of acceptance by
the admissions office, schedule an appointment with your advisor.
student responsibilities:
In addition to tuition, students are
responsible for transportation to the various
clinical sites, professional liability insurance,
books, and uniforms. Any student seeking
financial assistance should contact the
Financial Aid Office.
