a family affair - Bohemia Galleries
A FAMILY AFFAIR Bohemia Galleries launch a unique exhibition of art works that is strictly a family show. Works by the family comprising of Ludmila, Oleg and their wonderfully talented son, Artiom, are all in lights , in what is being titled The Theatre of Life Exhibition. L udmila and Oleg are originally from Moldova where Ludmila was brought up in a very theatrical environment. Her father was a set designer and scene painter for the National Theatre of Opera, and her mother was a ballerina at the same theatre.Together they instilled a deep love and appreciation of the arts in all their children and it is therefore no surprise that one of Ludmila s brothers is also an artist of some repute and the other a famous writer. Ludmila was then formally trained at the College of Art in Kishriev. Interest in her work was immediate and it was soon in demand. She has had many exhibitions in Russia and Moldova. In 2001, now married to Oleg, she moved to Canada to 50 art of england start a new life with their very young son Artiom. It was always one of her great desires to travel and see as much of the world as possible. Canada reinvigorated her and gave the family stability and a new culture and lifestyle. Ludmila quickly gained respect from an international audience by being well represented in several galleries across Canada and America. Gradually her work was shown by galleries in the UK and she now has a truly world wide collection base. She is a true artist in that she is driven to paint, and symbolism plays an important role in her paintings. They have a fairytale-like quality and she believes that every woman is a princess inside. Although no longer waiting opposite top left: Artiom, Cityscape 1, 16 x 24 Acrylic on Paper opposite top left: Oleg,, Floral Extravaganza, 16 x 24 Acrylic on Canvas opposite bottom: Ludmila Curilova, Taking Tea, 39 x 40 Acrylic on CanvasTaking Tea below: Ludmila Curilova, The Golden Necklace, 16 x 24 Acrylic on Canvas for her prince, those romantic and enchanted characters still live deep within her soul. The experience that we can share, when looking at one of her beautifully rendered figurative works, allows us the special opportunity to see the world through her looking glass. It was her fantastic and uniquely stunning paintings that first attracted Steve and Sheana, leading them to show her paintings in their two galleries, and thus discover the rest of the family. Oleg s works are simple but beautiful floral extravaganzas. A trained doctor back in Moldova, he now has to retake all his exams to be able to practice in Canada. His current freedom has enabled him to work hard to promote Ludmila and to paint alongside her and Artiom in a true family atmosphere. There is no doubting his skills when you look closely at the delicate and time-consuming poetry of his compositions. Each flower and tendril is beautifully executed and his paintings work really well with Ludmila s, as if they are meant to be together. Last, but by no means the least artistic member of the trio, is Artiom. What a delight to the eye are his unique city scenes. Neither na ve nor sophisticated, they stand in a category all of their own. When Steve and Sheana first hung the then 9 year-old s work in their galleries, they sold immediately, and at an alarming rate that they could not keep pace with. There are never enough original works available, so some have been put into an age-related series of prints. Aged 12, he was given a solo exhibition in their York gallery and that was a complete sell-out. Artiom is now 13 and clearly showing signs of other interests for a young man but he still loves to paint and if anything, his works have become even better. Being hailed as the new Lowry will do his reputation no harm, even though he has never heard of him. He has undertaken several private commissions in the UK; notably one for the celebration of the abolition of slavery for Hull s Wilberforce House and another of Abbey Road studios in London for a children s charity event. Who knows what he will eventually decide to do? (A doctor like his father is the preferred choice at present.) but he is very much his own person, choosing to drop his family name in favour of the fashionable use of one name. This might just be the next Banksy . This truly stunning exhibition will be on line to purchase from the 19th October. It will be held in the Beverley Gallery at 2, Sow Hill Road, Beverley, East Yorkshire from the 26th October for a fur ther three weeks.
