More importantly how many people this community has served in the last 53 years. What a blessing it is to be a part of this moment in time. Administrative Assistant Please join me in welcoming Pamela Jax to our community – her smiling face will be the one that greets you in the front office. My Innerview Thank you for taking the time to complete our satisfaction survey. Its only through your feedback that we can improve in making this community the very best it can be. Native to Mexico and Central America, poinsettias were introduced to the United States by Joel Roberts Poinsett, a botanist, physician, and the first U.S. ambassador to Mexico. The plant is named after him. The poinsettia is a perennial flowering shrub that grows wild in both tropical and dry forests. In their native habitat, they can grow to be more than 10 feet tall. The colored petals that resemble a flower are actually modified upper leaves called bracts. The poinsettia’s true flower is its tiny yellow center. The Aztecs used poinsettia bracts to make a reddish purple dye for fabrics. They also used the sap from the leaves to control fevers. Many people believe that poinsettias are highly toxic, but multiple studies have shown that this is not true. However, they can cause an upset stomach or be a choking hazard for children or pets. The poinsettia is the best-selling potted plant in the U.S. and Canada. Red remains the most popular color of poinsettias, but there are more than 100 varieties, including pink, white, yellow, purple and multicolored versions. Keeping Up With Marycrest! Keeping Up... (Continued) Greetings Marycrest Family and Friends, The Holidays are officially in full swing! It is hard to believe that 2015 is coming to a close and that 2016 is right around the corner. Ongoing education to all of our associates continues. For the month of November, education was provided regarding “Fire Safety.” Influenza vaccinations are being administered for associates and residents. Flu season runs from October 1, 2015 to April 1, 2016. If your loved one has not received their flu vaccine this year and would like to, please let one of our associates know. We ask that as a way to protect our residents and associates here at Marycrest Manor, please refrain from visiting if you are experiencing flu like symptoms. Your loved ones health is our main priority. The first line of defense in fighting infection is proper hand washing/sanitizing. Please remember to sanitize your hands before entering and upon exit of our community. Several of our associates had perfect attendance between the months of September and November. Please join me in congratulating them and thanking them for all of their hard work and dedication: Daniel C. CNA, Ken S. Environmental Services, Ashley P. Environmental Services, Betty W. Laundry. During the holidays, family gatherings and social events can bring added challenges. Remember these tips to help you enjoy merry moments this season. Plan ahead. As with most holiday activities, planning ahead to manage errands and anticipate problems can be the best preventive measure. Prepare visitors. Loved ones who require care may not be able to participate in the holidays the way they once did. Let family members and friends who don’t see your loved one frequently know what to expect and how to make the most of their visit. Adapt celebrations. Celebrate with your loved one within his or her current capabilities. Keep it simple: Listen to memorable music, look at photos from past holidays or share a favorite seasonal treat. Don’t forget that the season is about joy and love—not perfection. Take a timeout. It’s imperative to make time for yourself to relax and recharge during the busy season. Consider respite care services or call in a friend or relative to look after your loved one for a few hours while you do something you enjoy. Maintenance Corner Temperature Change Update Being that we live in Michigan, we know that the weather changes drastically from day to day. I would like to remind you that as guests and workers of Marycrest, we are all visitors to the Resident’s home. The temperature will be adjusted according to the Resident’s preference’s, not ours. Some area’s of the building will be warmer than others. A way to make sure that you are National Human Rights Day Human rights day is observed by the international community on December 10th. Here at Marycrest Manor we pride ourselves in recognizing inherent dignity and rights of our residents. We believe in assuring our resident’s voices are heard by honoring their comfortable is to wear layers of clothing into the community so that you may adjust according to your preference. Please keep in mind that our Resident’s body temperature is totally different than ours, so please don’t open the any windows without the Resident’s permission. Thank you, Keith McBride, EVS Director preferences, providing choices, and allowing resident’s autonomy to ultimately determine that of which is of value. As we rejoice in Human rights day this month, we would like to celebrate our community and our highest dedication to the rights of our resident’s every day. Jenna Lake, RN, CCC Lisa Warren, RN, DON Lisa Fischer, RN ADON IP-948 - Marycrest Manor - Issue: 12/01/15 7 Viewed: 11/19/15 08:51 AM Spiritual Corner “Now There Were Shepherds in That Region...” The Christmas story, with its many aspects, is so very special: how God loved humanity so much that he sent his Son to live among us to show us how truly great is the Father’s love. Can you imagine being a shepherd on that dark hillside outside of Bethlehem when the angel announced the birth of Jesus? A shepherd’s job wasn’t for the fearful. Being a shepherd required sure-footedness on the rocky terrain, skill to find watering places and sufficient pasturing for a flock. Alertness to the dangers of predators and the ability to run them off or kill them were also important for a shepherd, as was rescuing sheep that were caught in brambles, or those which had wandered away. That Christmas night was most likely during the lambing season, since the sheep weren’t confined to the pen, but rather, were out in the field where the newborns wouldn’t be trampled upon by the older ones. Accustomed to the unexpected, these shepherds were startled by that angel’s appearance. The first thing the angel says to them is, (Continued) “Do not be afraid...” Then, in addition to astonishing news of the birth of the long-awaited Messiah, the shepherds are overcome with a “multitude of the heavenly host...praising God and [singing]....” Shepherds were definitely not of the upper class of folks, but were on the lower rungs of society of that time. But their faith in God’s promises given so many years before through the prophets was strong enough to propel them to the village of Bethlehem "...to see this thing that has taken place, which the Lord has made known to us.” On the way, they may even have wondered, “Why would the Lord tell us about this? Why not the local rabbi, or the Temple priests in Jerusalem?” My guess to these questions would be because they were among those most likely to believe the message and joyfully spread it among their families, friends and neighbors. Luke’s Gospel account tells us that “All who heard it were amazed by what had been told them about this child.” Then, they returned to their flocks imitating the angels in simply “glorifying and praising God for all they had heard and seen.” May we do the same this Christmastide. Sister Judith Salzman, Pastoral Care Services Director Ways to Fight Cabin Fever When the weather is dreary, staying inside is a natural response. But too much time indoors can make you feel restless and irritable. If you find yourself falling victim to cabin fever, try these remedies: Get out there. Break out of your routine by taking a short walk outside. The fresh air will re-energize you, and you’ll get a little exercise, too. Now is also a good time to participate in outdoor winter sports such as ice skating or skiing. Tap into your creative side. Winter days are good for tackling that list of craft project ideas you swore you’d get to someday. You could also start a new hobby, such as knitting or painting. A quick run to the craft store for supplies is the perfect excuse to get out of the house. Play with your space. Get a head start on spring cleaning and pick an area of your home to reorganize. A new furniture arrangement can help your home feel fresh and vibrant. Make it more fun by listening to music or audio books while you work. Spread some cheer. Visit an elderly neighbor or a nearby retirement home for a friendly chat with the residents. It’s usually much harder for these folks to leave their home during the winter, so bring a cabin fever cure to them.
