By: Russ Nelson Minneapolis Club President I look forward to my year as Club President with the expectation that we will continue to be the best City Club in the country! Under the leadership of our past President, Bert Colianni, we continued to make significant strides in building a strong, diverse Board, maintaining a solid financial position and strengthening our many programs and “club within a club” opportunities. Frank DiLapo continues to improve the member experience with a superior staff and excellent, diverse programming for all of our members. Our recently renovated grill and outdoor garden dining have witnessed significant increases in member usage due to both the attractive surroundings and superb food under the leadership of Executive Chef, Håkan Lundberg. Our Fitness Center continues to see success, particularly with both individual trainer and group classes, such as Spinning and Yoga. I can personally attest that without the rigorous aerobic and strength training by my trainer, Amber Hahn, I wouldn’t have made the 8 mile trek up Bright Angel Trail in the Grand Canyon last September! We are pleased to welcome our new Fitness Director, Laura McNiff, who brings over 13 years of experience in the health and wellness field, including 7 years of management experience in the fitness industry. If you haven’t tried our Fitness Center, now is the time! We continue to attract new members but also face the continued challenge of retaining members in a very competitive market. Under the leadership of Board Members Mary Blegen and Diane Lilly, our Membership Committee remains active in developing and implementing new strategies for membership growth. On that note, I am pleased to announce new members to our Board, each of whom will bring an energetic and new perspective as we move forward. • Jeanne Crain is Group President for Bremer Bank and Chief Executive Officer of Bremer’s Twin Cities Charter. In her current role, Crain oversees Bremer’s financial services business, including: Bremer Investment Management & Trust, Investment Services, and Insurance. She is also responsible for the Twin Cities Charter. Crain joined Bremer in May 2012 and has more than 30 years of community banking experience. Crain has a bachelor’s degree from the University of North Dakota and a master’s degree from Marquette University. • Meghan Elliott started Preservation Design Works (PVN), a company dedicated to increasing the use of historic buildings, in 2012. In addition to leading PVN, Meghan is adjunct faculty at the M I N N E A P O University of Minnesota School of Architecture. She has also served on several non-profit boards including PPL, The Soap Factory, and the Construction History Society of America. She studied Civil Engineering and Studio Art at Rice University in Houston, Texas before doing graduate degrees in Architecture and Civil Engineering at UC Berkeley. She moved to Minneapolis in 2006 with her husband, Sean, and daughter, Floria. • Dr. Rajni Shah is the Vice President of Business Development for MyMeds, Inc. Prior to joining MyMeds, she was the Director of Eye Care for Luxottica Retail, overseeing the Midwest Region of Pearle Vision. Since moving to Minneapolis in 2007, she has become involved in the Minneapolis-Saint Paul community. Currently, she serves on the Executive Committee of the Board of Directors of the YMCA-Greater Twin Cities, and is a past Director of Marnita’s Table and Social Capital. She has also volunteered with ACES and Micro Grants. Rajni lives in Downtown Minneapolis with her husband and two year old twin daughters. • Louis J. King, II, President & CEO, Summit Academy OIC, Mr. King has over 20 years experience in education, youth development and workforce development. His current work focuses on stabilizing families by ensuring that parents earn the wages needed to adequately support their children. He currently serves on the following boards: St. Thomas Academy; Robins Kaplan Miller Ciresi Foundation; Chair of The Network for Better Futures; founder and co-chair of the HIRE Minnesota Coalition; Chair of the Northside Community Response Team (NCRT). He firmly believes that “the best social service program in the world is a job”. • Beth Lilly is a Senior Vice President and Portfolio Manager at Gabelli Asset Management. Gabelli Asset Management is an investment management firm with assets under management of over $47 Billion. Beth began her career at Goldman Sachs in 1985 in New York and moved back to Minneapolis and joined First Asset Management in 1991 as an analyst and portfolio manager. In 2002, Beth merged the firm she co-founded, Woodland Partners LLC, into Gabelli Asset Management. Beth serves on several nonprofit Boards locally in the Minneapolis St. Paul Community. Beth and her family live in St. Paul and she has been a member of the Minneapolis Club since 1998. In conclusion, my areas of focus this year will be increasing membership and usage by all members, increased participation by members in various club programs, especially fitness, and maintaining our strong financial position. I am confident we will reach these goals under the leadership of Frank DiLapo and his very skilled staff. L I S C L U B Clubs within the Club. Dig deeper. Get involved. Clubs within the Club are a personal way for members to share interests. There is a Club within the Club for you. Jeanne Crain Book Club Board of Governors Hosted by Jill Johnson Welcome new 2014/2015 board members summer of 1927 began with one of the signature events of the twentieth century: on May 21, 1927, Charles Lindbergh set off to be the first man to cross the Atlantic alone in an airplane. When he succeeded, he profoundly changed the culture and commerce of America and its image abroad. Add to that Babe Ruth’s efforts to break the home-run record he set, Henry Ford’s retooling of the Model T into the Model A, the execution of accused anarchists Sacco and Vanzetti, and Al Jolson appearing in the first talkie, and 1927 became the pivot point when the U.S. began to dominate the world in virtually everything—military, culture, commerce, and technology. Tuesday, June 3 • 5:00 PM - 7:00 PM Members: $15.95++ • Guests: $25.00 inclusive RSVP [email protected] or call 612.332.2292 Sometimes an idea stops everything in its tracks and demands immediate attention. This past January, Finnegans CEO, and Minneapolis Club member, Jacquie Berglund heard a crazy-good, entirely original idea from her long time, pro bono ad agency, Martin|Williams. A Reverse Food Truck: a food truck that doesn’t give out food, but takes it in for donations. Berglund—constantly looking for exciting new ways for her company to fulfill its mission to turn beer into food—ate it up. “It was such a fun, brilliant idea that I had a hard time focusing throughout the rest of the meeting,” says Jacquie. “I promised the Martin|Williams team I was going to go out and buy a food truck by the end of the week, which is when serendipity stepped in. After my meeting, I ran into Luke Derheim, the marketing manager at Stanley’s Northeast Bar Room and before I knew it I had a food truck sourced.” The Reverse Food Truck is a new way for Finnegans to get out in the community and inspire more Minnesotans to give back, supporting its unique business model of giving 100 percent of profits from beer to local food bank to purchase fresh produce from local farms. Finnegans supplies fresh produce to food shelves in Minnesota by funding Emergency Foodshelf Network’s ‘Harvest for the Hungry Program’. The Reverse Food Truck hit the streets of Minneapolis beginning on St. Patrick’s Day. Those looking to give back can make donations of groceries or money at the truck. Finnegans goal is to raise $50,000 for the food drive running through September. Consider a legacy membership at the Club. Cocktail Club: Tiki Cocktails Classic Cocktails “Tiki Cocktails”. Classic Cocktails Club explores cocktails, spirits and their complexities. A new spirit is presented at each event which allows you to taste many varieties of a spirit and learn about their flavors and characteristics. We also learn why certain spirits are better fitted to specific types of cocktails and how each spirit contributes and supports the flavor of a cocktail in a different way. By Chef Håkan Lundberg As the weather has finally sprung into spring, so have our new menus. My focus is on local and organic foods which produce incredible flavors, colors and smells. The Mole Roasted Wild Acres Chicken, for example, was a hit when last served in the Grill. It continues to receive comments about the incredible flavor combinations. Look for other amazing dishes on our 500 fit menus during lunch. This grand old edifice is a source of pride for Minneapolis Club members and a joy for all who attend events here. The Clubhouse is one of the best preserved examples of downtown architecture from over a century ago. However, we continue to be faced with the myriad of issues one would expect from a building 106 years old. This year the Clubhouse is undergoing a complete heating and cooling systems overhaul. One of our concerns in recent years has been keeping our members comfortable when it is very hot or very cold outdoors. Our aged HVAC system has not been operating as intended or efficiently. We are three months into retrofitting our system and we are already seeing significant improvements. The Clubhouse has a more reliable, stable, and consistent inside temperature and we are beginning to see declines in energy usage. Ultimately our goal is twofold. The first is to ensure our members’ and guests’ comfort, and the second is to reduce our energy consumption. An inefficient HVAC system must run longer and harder than one that is correctly calibrated. By getting the system to work as intended we will reduce our energy consumption and lower the club’s utility bills. A reasonable estimate is a 15% savings in energy consumption and a more comfortable building. Now that is what is known as a win win. Announcing two electric car charging stations. The Garden is open! This burst of warm weather has everyone in Minneapolis thinking the same thing: Outdoor Dining! The Club’s Garden is now open for full service and will be “the place to be” this summer. During Happy Hour, enjoy the addition of a community table to gather at and a build your own mojito bar featuring the freshest fruits, berries and home grown mint. The Club’s staff are excited to make your summer the best yet! We look forward to seeing you in the Grill & Garden! 3 As the popularity of electric cars continues to grow so must the number of charging stations. We are proud to announce the Club has installed two electric car-charging stations. They are on the east side of the fifth floor of the parking ramp. There are green strips and signage that identify the spaces. These spaces are permanently reserved for electric car charging. Please be mindful of this if you are driving either a gas or diesel car. Please bring your own power cord. Power cords vary from car to car and the Club cannot stock them all. We will have one cord that claims to be universal, but to ensure compatibility, we strongly encourage you to bring one. Please see the parking ramp attendant for our cord. This is one more step towards making the club a more environmentally friendly place. Look for more in the near future as opportunities arise. As one famous Minnesota son proclaimed, “for the times they are a changing.” 12 Meet our new Fitness Director.
