THE MOUSSEM OF MOULAY ABDELLAH AMGHAR
The Moussem of Moulay Abdellah is one of the most important in Morocco.
Celebrated since hundreds of years by the tribes of Dokkala, in the ribat of
Tit( center Moulay Abdellah currently) at the memory of the holy Moulay
Abdellah Amghar.
The festivities of the Moussem are very varied and diversify between
the marabout and dits mosque and patrimonial folkloric activities in the
different spaces of the Moussem.
This demonstration is characterized by its aspect non stop; if the day is
dedicated to the fantasia and to hunts with falcon, the night is dedicated
to the evenings of chaabi and the art of the halqa in the hippodrome of
fantasia.

THE RIBAT OF MOULAY ABDELLAH
Tit : An ancien Maraboutic center
Titanfetr or tit is usually referred to in the books of history is situated on the Atlantic coast in Doukkala, a region in Morocco.
It is located between El Jadida and Oualidia, but today its name has gradually changed to Moulay Abdellah. Historians agree
that Tit which is today an urban center was in the past among the great cities of Morocco.
The ancient Tit
Archaeological studies of the region have revealed that tit was very much populated in the early ages. Historians, too,
confirm that the famous harbour often called Routoubis existed in the same area which proves that trade was already brisk
in the region and that Tit was an ancient city.
Tit in the history of Islam
After their arrival to Morocco, the early Muslim dynasties that ruled the country encouraged the construction of new
building formed a tiny village that was later referred to in the Islamic and Arabic references as Tit-an-fitar or tit for short.
Most ancient cities in Morocco have Berber names and Titanfetr is no exception. It is a compound name whose meaning
remains open to various interpretations; however, most historians agree that the term means a water jet. It is Said that the
famous cheikh Ismail Ben Said, also called ben Amghar was the first to put foot on the place and to use the water to perform
his ablution.
Tit : an Amghar village
Cheikh Ismail ben Said, the grand father of the Amghars was the first to settle in tit which was then almost unpopulated.
Abedadim Azemmouri reports that the place was covered a totally deserted area because once cheikh Ismail arrived there,
he drew the attention of a near by tribe whose chief was the famous Ibn Battana. The members of this tribe were interested
in cheikh Ismail ben Said’s Soufism, devotion to god and modesty. He had a great passion for teaching people and guiding
them to the right pqth.
He was endowed with Baraka (spiritual powers) and miracles. The tribe called Sanhaja venerated cheikh Ismail ben Amghar’s
moral conduct. The cheikh (chief of the tribe) also admired the noble qualities of cheikh Ismail and asked the latter to marry
his daughter.
Cheikh Ismail had a son named Ishak about whom Azzayat in his valuable book “Attachaouf” says Ishak was one of the
greatest servants of God in his age.
It is cheikh Ismail who started the first Amghar family in Tit. He also helped building a new Islamic village before the arrival
of the Almoravides dynasty circa the beginning of the 11th century. The new building can be considered the first Amghar
village in which cheikh Ismail Amghar died and was buried. The outstanding building attributed to cheikh Ismail Amghar is
the Qncient mosque with its small dome in Tit.

EDITORIAL
The moussem of Moulay Abdellah Amghar constituted for hundreds of years a yearly appointment for the meeting of the
tribes of the Doukkala region. Celebrated at the memory of the holy Moulay Abdellah Amghar, the moussem has became
nowadays one of the most important demonstrations of this kind at the national scale. This year, the organization of this
demonstration will be characterised by a new vision that is based on the global strategy of the promoting touristic and
cultural activities in the province of El Jadida. The aim of these activities is to give to the moussem its authenticity and its
religious and spiritual aspect. Indeed, the ribat of Tit has been now as a place of religious education and pilgrimage for
the Oulamas and the adepts that arrive there from all Moslem countries. Along years, the moussem know several changes
giving it an aspect which is more folkloric than religious. This year, however, numerous religious and scientific activities are
programmed with the intention of creating a space of dialogue and exchange on various topics. Both, the choice of the
topics and the methods of their treatment have carefully being selected.
In Addition to the religious side, the traditional shutters of the moussem are also going to benefit from a new renovation,
especially the fantasia that symbolizes the companions that the tribes of Doukkala led to fight occupying forces and the
falconry whose moussem constitutes the yearly appointment. All these aspects have been taken into consideration to show
them under a more authentic angle. Besides, a particular attention has been given to make of the moussem a transmission
space of father’s noble arts to son. This process aims at encouraging the young including girls to practise these arts and to
assure their everlastingness.
However, the novelty of the edition 2009 is, without dispute the exceptional media coverage from which these activities
will be benefit. In addition to the chains nationals numerous Arabian and foreign correspondents will be presents, as well
many journalists of the national and the foreign written press. The goal of this operation is to give to the moussem a new
impetus and to conceive a space to promote the cultural and touristic potentialities of the region of the Doukkala. The
moussem doesn’t only constitute a demonstration whose festivities limit themselves to the religious activities, fantasia, and
falconry but symbolizes the life style of the tribes of Doukkala, where the culinary and sartorial arts are present in strength.
The moussem also aims to enhance an authentic tourist product that shows the specificities of the region.
The moussem of Moulay Abdellah Amghar will be this year a window opened on the world and an ambassador exception
of the tourist potentialities of the region of Doukkala.

Le moussem de Moulay Abdellah Amghar
Le Moussem de Moulay Abdellah Amghar est l’une des plus importantes
manifestations religieuses et culturelles au Maroc. Célébré depuis des
centaines d’années par les tribus des doukkala, au Ribat Tit(Centre
Moulay Abdellah actuellement) à la mémoire du saint Moulay Abdellah
Amghar. Les festivités du moussem sont très variées et se diversifient
entre des activités religieuses au sein du marabout et de sa mosquée et

moussem.
Cette manifestation se caractérise par son aspect non stop ; Si la
journée est consacrée à la fantasia et à la chasse au faucon, la nuit
connaît l’organisation de soirées artistiques populaires par le comité
d’organisation, les élus et notables sur la scène officielle et en plus de
l’art du Halka dans l’espace Mahrak.

Le Ribat de Moulay Abdellah Amghar
Tit l’ancienne
Les monuments découverts dans la région de Tit sont un témoignage notoire du degré d’urbanisation et de peuplement
qu’a connu cette localité depuis des ères anciennes. D’ailleurs, des recherches en sciences toponymiques ont montré que
le port dénommé routoubis dans les littératures anciennes, se trouvait dans le même lieu que Tit, ce qui témoigne encore
une fois de l’ancienneté de cette ville marocaine.
Tit dans l’histoire islamique
Après l’avènement de l’islam au Maroc, les dynasties qui se sont succédées ainsi que les habitants qui ont demeuré à
routoubis ont bâti leurs constructions nouvelles à coté des constructions anciennes, et des fois sur les décombres de cellesci. L’urbanisation nouvelle a commencé à porter un autre nom dans les références arabes et islamiques, notamment celui
de Titnfetr, abrégé en tit.
Titnfetr est un vocable berbère,à l’instar des noms des localités marocaines, composé de « Tit » signifiant « Œil », de « n »
pour l’adjonction et « Fitr » signifiant nourriture. Celle-ci s’est arabisée à son tour et a pris le nom de Ain Fitr. On rapporte
que l’origine de cette appellation revient à l’existence d’une source ou le cheikh Ismail Ibn Said, surnommé Ibn Amghar, fut
le premier des amghanéens à y faire ses ablutions et à y boire de l’eau. Après cela , le lieu fut surnommé Titnfetr.
La localité Tit l’amgharéenne
La première installation à Titnfetr l’amgharéenne est donc liée au cheikh Ismail Ibn Said l’ancêtre des amgharéens eu égard
au fait qu’il est considéré comme le premier à s’installer dans la région.
De même selon abdeladim El Azemmouri, la région ne connaissait pas de constructions tant elle était sauvage et cachée
par la verdure. Cependant, la région ne demeura pas inconnue car la sédentarisation du Cheik Ismail El Amghari, a suscité
l’intérêt de la tribu voisine du lieu qui profitait également des ses ressources verdoyantes et maritimes. La tribu en question,
dont le cheikh était nommé Ibn batan contemporain du cheikh AL Amghari, est supposé une descente des sanhaja.Les
sanhaja de Titnfetr ont accordé une grande estime au cheikh Al Amghari en vertu des grandes qualités que possédait
l’invité Amgharéen, notamment celles de piété, de méditation, de satisfaction et de volonté d’instruire les gens. Ils étaient
aussi émerveillés par ses karamats et ses actes extraordinaires.
La relation entre les deux parties s’est tellement intensifiée qu’un mariage a eu lieu unissant l’une des filles de la tribu
au cheikh Ismail. Un enfant naquit auquel fut donné le nom d’Ishaq qui suivit la même voie de piété que son père. Il fut
également l’un des grands saints de son époque. Ce fut donc le commencement de la famille Amgharéenne avec à sa tête,
le cheikh Ismail Ibn Amghar, et ce avant l’avènement des Morabitines ( au début du 5eme siècle de l’Hégire)
D’ailleurs l’une des premières construction sur place fut la maison du cheikh El Amghari et de ses proches. C’est ce qu’on
peut appeler aussi le premier Ribat Amgharéen. Il est rapporté aussi que le cheikh Ismail mourut dans cette localité et y fut
enterré.

ÉDITORIAL
Le Moussem de Moulay Abdellah célébré depuis des centaines d’années à la mémoire
du saint Moulay Abdellah Amghar ; constitue un rendez-vous annuel des tribus de
Doukkala et compte parmi les plus importantes manifestations du genre à l’échelon
national.
L’édition 2009 de ce grand événement se fixe comme objectif de faire du Moussem le
fer de lance de la promotion touristique et culturelle de la province d’El Jadida ; tout
en veillant à lui préserver son caractère traditionnel et authentique qui s’appuie sur la
prédominance des activités religieuses et spirituelles.
C’est ainsi que le programme de cette édition réserve une place notoire aux causeries
religieuses, conférences pour hommes et femmes, l’organisation de concours
d’apprentissage et de psalmodie du Coran et l’édition et la distribution d’un livre
religieux eux pélerins.
Les activités de distraction, de loisirs et de sport occupent une place non moins
importante dans le programme, s’articulant autour des symboles centenaires de la
région, à savoir, la fantasia, la chasse aux faucons et les arts populaires.
Le pèlerinage des tribus des Doukkala dans un même espace, pendant le déroulement du
Moussem, constitue, par ailleurs un événement d’intérêt socioculturel indéniable pour le
visiteur qui pourrait en peu de temps s’imprégner du mode de vie des Doukkalis à travers
leurs us et coutumes, leurs chants, leurs danses populaires et leurs habillements.
L’attachement des tribus de Doukkala à leurs traditions et leur volonté de célébrer
annuellement le Moussem sont les garants de la pérennité de cet événement qui prend,
d’année en année, une ampleur considérable.
