Dawood Ibrahim
to‘retire’ soon
NT Bureau
Chennai, Dec 24:
India’s most wanted gangster Dawood
Ibrahim has decided to call it a day.
According to a report in Mumbai
Mirror, Dawood, who is currently
based out of Karachi in Pakistan and
is protected by the country’s security
forces round-the-clock, is likely to be
succeeded by one of his brothers
and Anees Ahmed is the front-runner.
Quoting sources, the report said
Dawood’s trusted lieutenant Chhota
Shakeel will mostly likely retain his
position as the organised crime
gang’s ‘CEO’.
‘The name of Dawood’s successor
will be declared at an opulent birthday celebration on Saturday, when
Dawood turns 60. The venue of the
birthday celebrations is a closely
guarded secret. Even those who
have received the invite have not yet
been told about the venue. All they
have been informed about is their
hotel reservations and that they will
be picked up just minutes before the
celebration and taken to the party,’
the report said.

Ponnar confident of
Jallikattu this year
NT Bureau
Chennai, Dec 24:
‘We are hopeful that jallikattu (bull
taming) will be conducted during this
Pongal festival in various parts of
Tamilnadu’, Union Minister and senior
BJP leader Pon Radhakrishnan today
said.
Addressing media persons here
after distributing relief materials to
flood-affected people at
Mylapore, he said, “I take
this opportunity to thank
Tamilnadu Chief Minister J
Jayalalithaa, DMK president
M Karunanidhi and leaders
of various political parties
in the State who have been
voicing to lift the ban on jallikattu and ensure that it is conducted
in Tamilnadu’.
The BJP for the last one and half
years has been taking up the issue. We
have been taking all efforts towards the
cause, he said.
‘During the recent Parliament session, we raised the issue with Union
Minister for Environment and Forests
Prakash Javdekar. The Minister has
assured that necessary steps would
be taken in this regard. He held meeting with officials of the department and
invited me to be part of it.’
It may be recalled that Jayalalithaa
had written to the Centre to pass a
special ordinance to allow jallikattu
in Tamilnadu.
Earlier yesterday, State unit president of the BJP Tamilisai Soundararajan, said, ‘Our party will ensure
that the Centre takes all efforts on
the legal front to revoke the ban on
jallikattu. Since the matter is pending
in the Supreme Court, the issue has
to be dealt with carefully.’
DMK treasurer M K Stalin
last week urged the Central
and State government to
remove the ban and said he
would lead a protest unless
they took steps to enable the
bull-taming sport to be held
during the Pongal festive
season in January.
‘Centre will render all help’
To a query on the assistance rendered by the Centre to Tamilnadu towards flood-relief, Pon Radhakrishnan,
said, ‘soon after the floods, Prime
Minister Narendra Modi personally
visited affected areas. He conducted
aerial survey and announced a reliefpackage of Rs 2000 crore.’
Union Ministers Venkaiah Naidu and
Arun Jaitley visited Chennai and held
discussions with the Chief Minister.
Also NDRF and defence personnel
were pressed into service, he added.
q Actor’s mom makes emotional appeal q Says her son is not guilty
NT Bureau
Chennai, Dec 24:
A day after the city police formed
special teams to arrest actor Simbu
over the Beep song controversy, his
mother Usha Rajendher today came
out with an emotional video stating
that her son is needlessly targeted.
‘We have no option but to leave
Tamilnadu’, she said.
The song, written and sung by
Simbu and allegedly composed by
Anirudh has witnessed the wrath of
many for the vulgar lyrics. Several
cases were filed against the duo and
police summoned them for enquiry.
Protests were staged against them
across the State. Meanwhile, when
Simbu’s anticipatory bail plea was
rejected by the Madras High Court, it
was reported that he may be arrested
and search was on for the ‘absconding’ actor.
Today, Usha Rajendher appeared
in a video that was aired on various
television channels.
‘What grave sin my son
committed? He has been
acting since he was just
six-months. And everyone
knows that our family
always respect and
honour women’
Defending her son, she said, ‘I was
pained to see Simbu being targetted
mercilessly. After all, the song was
recorded privately and even the cuss
words were beeped. When he himself
had abandoned the number, someone purposely put him in a tangle by
releasing the same illegally’.
Usha Rajendher, who burst into
tears in the course of her speech,
said, ‘what grave sin my son had

What impact does rain have
on air pollution?
When there is rainfall, pollutants
suspended in the atmosphere are
washed by water droplets and
drained away. This reduces the
levels of SPM (Suspended Particulate Matter), simultaneously
reducing air pollution. Reduction in air pollution levels when
it rains is thus, only a natural
phenomenon.
But with Chennai remaining
dry for the past few days, SPM
levels seem to be getting back
to normal. In fact, recent reports suggest that air quality
in Chennai is worse than in
Delhi...
May be. Air Quality Index takes
various factors into consideration. Having said that, metropolitan cities like Chennai and

Air pollution, acid rain
& Chennai floods
B SUDHARSAN
Chennai, Dec 24:
While Delhi, which has earned
the notoriety of being the world’s
most polluted city, seems to
have woken up after air pollution reached alarming levels this
winter, there is a clamour among
environmentalists to work out
strategies for other cities as well,
especially Chennai. For, a study
shows the southern city adds
around 700 vehicles daily to its
already suffocated roads.
In an interaction with News
Today, Centre for Science and
Environment (CSE), Deputy Lab
Head, Ramakant Sahu, talks
about how rains impact air pollution, the link between air pollution
and acid rain, health impact of
hazardous pollutants and more.
Excerpts...
Forever friends
ussian President Vladimir Putin has gifted Prime
Minister Narendra an 18th century sword from
Bengal and a page from Mahatma Gandhi’s diary
containing his handwritten notes.
The gifts were given to Modi by the Russian President
when they met in Kremlin here last night.
President Putin gifted me a page from Gandhiji’s diary
containing Bapu’s handwritten notes. President Putin
also gifted an 18th century sword from Bengal, featuring intricate silver artwork. I thank him for the gifts, the
Prime Minister tweeted.
The 18th century sword from Bengal belonged to the
Najafi Dynasty.
Putin hosted Modi for a tete-e-tete at the Kremlin
followed by a private dinner during which both leaders touched upon issues of mutual interests for both
countries.
The Prime Minister arrived here for a two-day visit
yesterday, his first bilateral trip here after assuming
the top office.
Modi and Putin will hold 16th India-Russia annual
summit talks at the Kremlin following which the two
sides are expected to sign a number of pacts to expand
cooperation in a number of key areas including defence,
nuclear energy, hydrocarbons and trade.
Mumbai have the presence of sea
breeze, which is not a phenomenon in Delhi. Sea breeze plays
a role in bettering the air quality.
Being landlocked and away from
peninsular India makes the national capital more vulnerable to
air pollution.
What are the major pollutants
that contribute to air pollution?
Sulphur dioxide, oxides of nitrogen, carbon monoxide, and
particulate matter.
What results in the release of
these pollutants into the air?
By and large emissions by vehicles run on petrol and diesel.
Does air pollution have an
impact on rainfall?
There is no direct link between
air pollution and rainfall. Floods
that happened in Chennai were
a result of climate change. Air
pollution does not result in increase or decrease of rainfall.
There is no report that links
the amount of rainfall with air
pollution.
What about acid rain?
Air pollution may or may not
result in acid rain. The pollutants suspended in the air do
not always get mixed with water
droplets.
Do you think Chennai and
other cities should follow on
the footsteps of Delhi to curb
air pollution?
The odd-even plan proposed
by Delhi government is a step
in the right direction. What I
would suggest though is cities
like Chennai switching to environment-friendly fuels instead
of petrol and diesel.
respects and honour women’.
‘It is the people of Tamilnadu who
gave us what all we have today. But
today, our life has become miserable here. Mediamen in front of our
house round-the-clock and repeated
condemnation against my son have
bothered us a lot. We are not able
to live at peace in our home. We
would rather leave Tamilnadu and
live peacefully elsewhere’.
Apparently blaming a few in the
industry of acting with vested interests to stifle the growth of his soon,
she said, ‘instead of cheap acts behind the screens, they should come
forward and fight him in public. He
is being needlessly made to face
one trouble after another’.
‘If my son had committed wrong,
hang him. Unfortunately, for no fault
of his he has been made to suffer.
I wonder what they want - whether
my son’s life or that of mine, who
brought him up’, she said.
Police continues search
Meanwhile, sources say that intense search is on for Simbu. A
team of police raided few resorts in
Mahabalipuram last night, following
information that he was staying there.
However he could not be found.
Meanwhile sources say that the
actor, who was staying in a friend’s
house in Hyderabad, is back in city
and is staying in a friend’s place here.
Also a strict vigil is being maintained at Chennai airport to ensure
that he doesn’t flee to any foreign
country.
Showers to continue
till January
q But Met office says nothing to panic about
NT Bureau
Chennai, Dec 24
If there is one word that makes
Chennaiites quake in fear the most
these days, it is ‘rain’. And, according to the Regional Meteorological
Centre (RMC) here, there will be
more rain till Pongal as the northeast monsoon is likely to extend into
January.
‘There are several chances for it to
rain next month also and 27 December (as mentioned in some private
weather websites) is not necessarily
the last day to receive the final spell
of rain this monsoon.’
But, the RMC duty officer also assured, ‘Only light rains are expected
and people need not panic over this.’
As for forecast for 26 December,
light to moderate rain would occur at a few places over Chennai,
Kanchipuram, Tiruvallur, Cuddalore,
Villupuram, Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Nagapattinam, Pudukkottai, Ramanathapuram, Tirunelveli, Tuticorin and
Kanyakumari districts of Tamilnadu
and Puducherry.
Isolated, light to moderate rain may
occur over the remaining districts of
Tamilnadu.
There were also speculations regarding the last spell of the north-east
monsoon occurring on 27 December.
The Met office has forecast moderate to rather heavy rain in many
places over Chennai, Kanchipuram,
Tiruvallur, Cuddalore, Villupuram,
Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Nagapattinam,
Pudukkottai, Ramanathapuram,
Tirunelveli, Tuticorin, Kanyakumari
districts of Tamilnadu, and Puducherry, on the day.
Light to moderate rain might occur
at few places over Sivagangai, Virudhunagar, Theni, Dindigul, Madurai
districts of Tamilnadu and isolated
light to moderate rain may occur over
rest of the districts on that day.
‘More rain can be expected over
south coastal Tamilnadu than the
northern counterparts,’ added the
Met official.

Residents of Villivakkam seek buses to Mugappair.
T
housands of residents living in and around
Villivakkam as well as the ICF quarters seek
only one thing. They want MTC to operate bus
services from the bus terminus here to Mugappair via
Ambattur Industrial Estate.
Seshasayee, a local said there was a need for such
a service currently. The absence of the facility has
forced many teenagers studying in schools like DAV,
SBOA and Velammal among others in Mugappair to
take at least two buses to travel to school.
This only means if children don’t start early, the chances of reaching school on time
were remote, said Mahalakshmi, a housewife and resident of Reddy Street. ‘I ensure that they wake up early and get ready
quickly,’ she added.
Agreeing with her view is Janaki Srinivasan, another housewife residing near
ICF. ‘The non-availability of bus services
is a problem for middle- class parents who
can’t afford to
drop their wards at
school.’

and Vallalar Nagar. Introducing a new service to Mogappair would be most welcome,
Janaki said.

NT Bureau
Chennai, Dec 24:
After the BJP and People’s Welfare
Front, DMK chief M Karunanidhi on
Wednesday wooed DMDK founder
leader Vijayakanth to join his front
to fight the Tamilnadu Assembly
elections, due early next year.
Karunanidhi told reporters here
that ‘our desire is that, when we
sew up the alliance, Vijayakanth too
should be part of it. We do not know
what is in his mind.’
Asked if this could be construed as
an invite, he said, ‘What I have said
now is an invitation (to him).’
Vijayakanth, Leader of the Opposition in the Tamilnadu Assembly, is
now the most sought after by other
Opposition parties as State Assembly election is slated to be held
in May next year. Earlier in the day,
PWF leaders Vaiko (MDMK), G Ramakrishnan (CPI-M), R Mutharasan
(CPI) and Thirumavalavan (VCK)
called on Vijayakanth at his office.
Vaiko reacts
Soon after DMK chief M Karunanidhi offered an invitation to DMDK
founder Vijayakanth, MDMK general
secretary Vaiko slammed the former
Chief Minister and said the development took place only after he (Vaiko)
and other leaders met Vijayakanth
early in the day.
While the DMDK chose to describe
the visit as ‘a courtesy call,’ an MDMK
press release said, ‘An invite was
extended to Vijayakanth to join the
PWF.’
MDMK also said the political situation in Tamilnadu was discussed.
Recently, BJP Tamilnadu unit
chief Tamilisai Soundararajan and
Union Minister Pon Radhakrishnan
called on Vijayakanth. Although the
party called it a ‘courtesy call,’ it was
perceived as another attempt by the
saffron party to bring back DMDK
into its fold.

Cong, the culprit
T
he winter session of Parliament has ended. And ended without
passing the GST Bill. What a harried Lok Sabha Speaker,
Sumitra Mahajan, said on the penultimate day of the winter session
about the Congress Party echoed the feelings of a vast majority
of the people. Her remark that the Congress was interested in its
own ‘vested interest’ and not national interest came when the BJD
member, Jay Panda, was being constantly interrupted by the Congress
members while he was speaking about terrorism and national
security. When Panda’s pleas to the disrupting members to keep quiet
went unheeded even though, as he emphasised, he was addressing a
problem of common national interest, the Chair was constrained to
remark that the disrupters had ‘vested’ rather than national interest
as their objective.
The oft-made counter that the BJP too had resorted to disruptions in
the previous Parliament is not exactly true since the then Opposition
had collectively resorted to that tactics only to protest the humongous
corruption scams of the UPA. On the other hand, all through the
winter session the main Opposition party privileged personal agenda
over national interest without focusing on any one particular wrongdoing of the government. It seemed to shop around for ever new
excuses to stall Parliament. Otherwise, the long-delayed GST Bill
would have got the nod. Despite the government virtually conceding
the three conditions set forth by the Congress for passing the GST
Bill, the latter still did not allow the Rajya Sabha to function for it
to be able to pass the revolutionary tax reform. The earlier plan to
implement GST from the next financial year, beginning April 1,
therefore, stands scuppered.
It should be reiterated here that most Opposition groups were keen
to approve the GST Bill in this session itself. However, one man’s
stubbornness on creating every possible obstruction in the path of
governance denied the country the switch to the revolutionary tax.
On one excuse or the other, the two Houses of Parliament were
not allowed to function. The Lok Sabha, where the ruling party
commands a clear majority, functioned amidst constant din by the
Congress members and managed to pass a number of Bills.
In the Rajya Sabha, where the ruling party is in woeful minority,
hardly any work could be accomplished. The misconduct of the socalled Elders exasperated the Chairman and the Vice-Chairman so
much that they openly pleaded for powers to discipline the errant
members. In the Rajya Sabha the power to punish members vests with
the majority, and not with the Chair. Since the majority caused the
disruption, the Chair felt entirely helpless. Hopefully, the government
would not allow the lack of purposefulness of Parliament to stall good
governance. As Finance Minister Arun Jaitley said, it was possible
to run good government without the GST as well.

New ‘Darwin’ information
processing chip developed
BEIJING:
Scientists have successfully developed a ‘Darwin’ neural chip, a kind
of information processing system
that mimics the principles of biological brains, an advance that could
lead to the development of artificial
intelligence systems and Internetof-Things.
Artificial Neural Network (ANN) is a
type of information processing system
based on mimicking the principles of
biological brains, and has been broadly
applied in application domains such as
pattern recognition, automatic control,
signal processing, decision support
system and artificial intelligence.
Spiking Neural Network (SNN)
is a biologically-inspired ANN that
performs information
processing based on
discrete-time spikes. It is
more biologically realistic
than classic ANNs, and
can potentially achieve
much better performance-power ratio.
Researchers from Zhejiang University and Hangzhou Dianzi University in China successfully developed
the Darwin Neural Processing Unit
(NPU), a neuromorphic hardware
co-processor based on Spiking Neural Networks, fabricated by standard
CMOS (complementary metal-oxide
semiconductor) technology.
With the rapid development of the
Internet-of-Things and intelligent
hardware systems, a variety of intelligent devices are pervasive in today’s
society, providing many services and
convenience to people’s lives, but
they also raise challenges of running
complex intelligent algorithms on
small devices.
The research group led by De Ma
from Hangzhou Dianzi university and
Xiaolei Zhu from Zhejiang university
has developed a co-processor named
as Darwin.
The Darwin NPU aims to provide
hardware acceleration of intelligent
algorithms, with target application
domain of resource-constrained,
low-power small embedded devices.
It has been fabricated by
180nm standard CMOS
process, supporting a
maximum of 2048 neurons, more than 4 million
synapses and 15 different possible synaptic delays.
It is highly configurable, supporting
reconfiguration of SNN topology and
many parameters of neurons and
synapses.
The successful development of
Darwin demonstrates the feasibility of
real-time execution of Spiking Neural
Networks in resource-constrained
embedded systems.

VOICE MAIL
A good move
Sir,
Chinese legislators hailed the move
to amend the country’s controversial
family planning law to allow couples
to have two children by scrapping
the over three decades old one child
policy.
The draft came after the Communist
Party of China Central Committee
decided in October to give the go
ahead for the universal two-child rule,
which will replace the decades-long
one couple, one child policy.
China’s family planning policy
was first introduced in the 1970s to
rein in the surging population. The
population of senior citizens has been
increasing rapidly in recent years,
while the labour force is contracting.
To address the demographic crisis,
China relaxed its birth rules in 2013,
allowing couples to qualify for a second child if one of the partners is an
only child.
The new rule in the draft is expected
to further stabilise China’s total fertility
rate (TFR) or the number of children
that would be born to a woman of
child-bearing age, which stood at 1.65
per cent in 2014. The reading dipped
to about 1.21 per cent in 2012.

ICICI Bank has tied up with railway’s
e-ticketing platform IRCTC to sell rail
tickets through its website.
The largest private sector lender will
soon introduce the facility to book rail
tickets on its mobile banking application and prepaid digital wallet, it said
in a statement.
Users will have to first register
on the website of Indian Railway
Catering and Tourism Corporation
(IRCTC), where it primarily sells rail
tickets, and then do a one-time registration on the bank’s website to avail
of the facility.
The statement also said the facility
is not limited to ICICI customers as
any other bank’s customer can also
use the facility. The payments for the
purchases can be made using the
online banking facility, debit or credit
card of any bank.
In the past, IRCTC has tied up with
websites, primarily those catering
to the travel segment, to sell tickets
and this is the first time any bank
is offering the tickets for sale on its
website, it said.

the India tour.
In a letter addressed to WICB
president Dave Cameron and the
inter-governmental Caribbean community (CARICOM) secretary-general Irwin LaRocque, the then BCCI
secretary Sanjay Patel said that failing to respond within a week from
receipt of his letter would force the
Indian board to file legal proceedings in Indian courts.
In a two-page letter,, Patel said
that the BCCI had acquiesced to
the CARICOM request last November which stated the WICB
be given a grace period of 40
days to respond to the BCCI’s
original claim.
Patel had sent that letter wherein
he had broken the damages into
various components.
Calling the withdrawal, carried out
by Dwayne Bravo and his team after the fourth ODI in Dharamsala,
as a monumental disaster, Patel
asked the WICB to respond within
a period of 15 days from the receipt
of that letter. The BCCI had earlier
already said that it had cancelled all
future bilateral engagements with
West Indies pending resolution to
the matter.

Woods hopeful of a

Tiger Woods
Washington, Dec 24:
With his 40th birthday just one
week away, Tiger Woods looks optimistically forward to playing golf
pain-free next year while he reflects
on a 2015 campaign blighted by injuries, poor form and a plummeting
world ranking.
The greatest player of his generation and arguably of all time,
Woods has not won a tournament
anywhere since the 2013 WGCBridgestone Invitational and his title
drought in the major championships
dates back to the 2008 U.S. Open.
Woods, the world number one for
a record total of 683 weeks who is
now stunningly ranked 414th, said
earlier this month that he was in the
dark about the future of his playing
career, asking himself: Where is the
light at the end of the tunnel?
Yet the winner of 79 career PGA
Tour events now says he firmly believes he will still be contending, and

Imran Khan to
mentor Peshawar
in PSL
Karachi, Dec 24 (PTI):
Cricket legend-turned-politician
Imran Khan has agreed to become mentor of the Peshawar
franchise in the upcoming Pakistan Super League. Javed Afridi,
who owns the Peshawar Zalmi
franchise, confirmed that Imran
will be the mentor for the side and
provide guidance and vision to the
team, which is captained by Shahid Afridi.
Imran Khan has become the
mentor of our team and we are
overjoyed with this development
as he represents the best of Pakistan cricket and we will benefit
immensely from his guidance
and advice, Afridi told
PTI. Since his retirement
in 1992, Imran has stayed
away from taking up any
role in active cricket in Pakistan and has become a leading political figure.
Javed Afridi said Shahid had
convinced Imran to mentor the
Peshawar franchise which has
made Zalmi Youth it theme

League to benefit from the legacy

the last few years and have done
some pretty good things, but I`d like

Woods, who has slipped in recent
years due to injuries and mastering of a new swing, thought he was
back to form after tying for 10th at
the Wyndham Championship in August, following a dismal season in
which he missed three cuts in the
majors. But three weeks later he
had a second microdiscectomy surgery to alleviate pressure on a disc
in his lower back, before needing
another procedure on Oct. 28 on
the same area due to discomfort.
As far as 2015, it was a tough year
physically and took a toll on my
body,’ said Woods, whose career
tally of 14 major victories is surpassed only by Jack Nicklaus (18).
‘I had to battle through a swing pattern change and get that organised,
because it was awful at the beginning of the year ... the frustrating
part was not being able to build on it

Australia captain
and batting supremo Steve Smith
today admitted it has
been a hell of a ride
from his Test debut
as a leg-spinner to be
named ICC cricketer of
the year.
The honour was bestowed on the 26-yearold late Wednesday
after finishing the year,
which runs from September to September,
as the leading Test runscorer with 1,734 from 25
innings, averaging 82.57.
He also became the second youngest player to reach the number one
ranking for Test batsmen behind Indian legend Sachin Tendulkar. You
don’t think about these awards and
these accolades, the dashing righthander told the Cricket Australia
website.
You just want to go out there and
do the best you can for your team to
try and win as many games as possible. To be recognised as the best
player this year against some unbelievable talent around the world, it’s
very humbling and it’s an honour.’
Nicky Boje to run
Mumbai Marathon
Johannesburg, Dec 24 (PTI):
He may have once skipped the Indian tour in fear of being questioned
for his role in the 2000 match-fixing
scandal, but former South African
all-rounder Nicky Boje, who was
later cleared of all charges, is set to
participate in the
Mumbai Marathon
on 17 January.
Former
left-arm
spinner Boje, who
has already
CHENNAI
completed the Berlin Marathon, will
be off for a month from his job as
head coach of the provincial side
Knights and will also feature in the
Masters Champions League in the
United Arab Emirates (UAE). The
tournament, which features ex-international players, takes place
from 28 January to 13 February
next year. Meanwhile former
Proteas speedster and ex-bowling coach of the national team
Allan Donald will take over Boje’s
duties at the Knights till the time
the southpaw is away.
Boje on the other hand believes
that he still has a lot of cricket left
in him and also shared his ambition of running marathons with
his wife Anel.
Boje, once a wanted man in
India for his alleged role in the
2000 match fixing scandal that
precipitated the biggest crisis in
international cricket and the end
for Proteas captain Hansie Cronje, was later cleared after submitting to questioning by Indian
investigators.
He was also left out of subsequent tours to India and announced his retirement from international cricket on the eve of
the tour to India in 2006.
Given his prolific recent output with
the bat, it is easy to forget that he
made his Test debut as a leg-spinner against Pakistan at Lord’s in
2010, batting well down the order.
You have to pinch yourself sometimes -- it’s all a little bit surreal on
occasions, Smith said. ‘Five years
ago I wouldn’t have pictured myself
in this position. It’s been one hell of
a ride, the last five years.’
Following his Test debut, Smith
went back to state cricket for New
South Wales and focused on improving his batting, ‘to try and
find a game that can
be adaptable
and be
successful at this level. ‘I said when I got
another opportunity
I wanted to make the
most of it and I think
I’ve done that,’ he
said after cementing
his place in the Test
team in 2013 as a
batsman.
‘Hopefully there’s a lot
of improvement
left in me.’

PM’s intervention
Ahmedabad, Dec 24 (PTI):
Suspended BJP lawmaker Kirti Azad today sought Prime
Minister Narendra Modi’s intervention in the DDCA row
and asked for ‘specific reasons’ for the disciplinary action
against him by the party.
A BJP MP from Darbhanga in Bihar, Azad maintained
that his fight was only against alleged corruption in the
Delhi and District Cricket Association (DDCA) and not
against any individual.
‘I hope the Prime Minister will listen to my plea and do
justice. I will also ask margdarshak mandal to come forward and look into the issue,’ Azad told reporters here.
Cracking the whip, BJP yesterday suspended Azad,
who has been leading a campaign against Finance
Minister Arun Jaitley on alleged corruption in DDCA,
charging him with indulging in anti-party activities and
accusing him of ‘colluding’ with Congress and AAP to
bring it into ‘disrepute’.
Azad said that he had full ‘faith’ in Prime Minister Modi
and would expect him to do ‘justice.’ He said that he had
received notice (for suspension) from the party and
would submit his reply by today evening.
‘I have received a notice but it does not mention any
specific (reason) when and where I indulged in antiparty activities. What is my specific fault... I would like
to know from the party specific details which will help
me in filing my response,’ he said.

Actress Parvathy up
against cyber bully
Forest is his fodder
Selvakumar’s paintings on nature, a big draw
Frothing waterfall, dense vegetation,
colour of the season are well
depicted by the artist in his own way
P
arvathy Menon had
declared a couple of days
ago she doesn’t want the casteist surname and
that she’s dropping the Menon from her name. When
many lauded her for taking this stand, criticisms came her
way with people saying she’s taking such a stand due to the success of her recent movies. But Parvathy has strong reasons and logic
behind this decision.
On Tuesday, Parvathy shared a photo with Kanchanamala, whose role
she played in the movie Ennu Ninte Moideen, with a caption Watching Ennu
Ninte Moideen sitting right next to Kanchanamala!. one guy made an offensive
statement.
He commented go poop. Parvathy noticed this and her reply was, ‘Proud
moment for his family! Proud moment for us, we seem to churn out
cyber bullies at such a tender age! Beware. #enoughisenough I’m
not turning a blind eye anymore. This is for all those who suffer
bullying in silence. Time for manners to make a comeback!
Aim is to not destroy his life, but to hopefully educate
him. Manners are so underrated these days’.

L
ight has always been the central theme
for any artist. It allows a painter to express and give depth, definition and emotion
to a piece of work.
La Galerie D’Expression in Hotel Ambassador Pallava, Egmore is hosting artist D
Selvakumar’s works till 30 December. He
has painted a series of portraits on famous
personalities. With fine brush strokes and
sharp features, the artist has managed to
bring out every detail of his subject in reality.
There is also a series on landscapes
dominated with different shades of green,
from the darkest to the lightest. Here again
Selvakumar has played well with light and
shadow and has managed to bring a clear
distinction of it in his canvas.
An imaginary line runs across his paintings depicting this. Robert Frost’s poem
The road not taken, seems to have created
some impact on the painter. Most of his art
work on nature is all about forest and has
literally two roads in the scene.
With green being a dominating shade in
his paintings, Selvakumar has also managed to give water a reflection of this cool
colour.
The autumn leaves or snow flake on the
vegetation too have a hint of green. Frothing waterfall, dense vegetation, colour of
the season are well depicted by the artist
in his own way.
A few pieces on everyday life such as
farming, a woman making a garland with
flowers or a girl decorating the idol of Lord
Ganesh have been vividly captured by
Selvakumar with many colours.
