It has been an enormously enjoyable year both on and off the racecourse and we hope existing partners have found the new management to their liking. From a communication point of view, we have been keen to keep everyone as well-informed as possible including videos and photos which are now so easy to take and send on using modern gadgets! On the track, eight of our ten horses have run, winning seven races between them whilst from a prize money point of view, it was our best for more than a decade. The highlight of the season has, of course, been Tullius who has won more than £200,000 of prize money, taking his career total to £335,000 and improving his rating to 117. For the Partners, we have welcomed more than two dozen new partners, including some parents of Finton House pre-prep school in London. We intend to build on this development somewhat but are ever mindful to maintain the intimate nature and team spirit that is the essence of KVT. With the KVT horses, we have increased the squad from six to ten and it looks likely that we will be running ten horses in our colours next season. All of our older horses collected prize money and four of the five won races and, with the exception of Tullius, all will be offered for sale this autumn. Amongst the two-year-olds, Magical Memory won a Racing Post Yearling Bonus at Leicester and also ran promisingly at Glorious Goodwood. He is rated 87 and should make up into a smart sprint handicapper for 2015. Both Finton Friend and Maxwell have also shaped with promise in their early starts whilst Spring Seraph is nearly ready for his debut. Bishop’s Leap is a lovely later-maturing horse for the future. Four new yearlings have been acquired, three colts and a filly, details of which are on the following pages. These are destined for our existing trainers, Andrew Balding, Ralph Beckett, Richard Hannon and Charles Hills, all of whom feature in the industry top twenty at the time of going to print. In addition to our Annual Parade and Lunch for partners at Ardington, these yearlings will also be shown to potential partners at Newbury racecourse, before racing on Saturday 25th October. As usual shares will be sold on a first come first served basis. The 2014 flat season was noteworthy on many fronts. The exploits of Kingman will live long in the memory; Tiggy Wiggy was one of the most outstanding two-year-old fillies we have seen for a long time, whilst Treve’s runaway victory in the Arc De Triomphe was simply sublime. For 2015, the Racing Post Yearling Bonus will be replaced by the new Plus10 bonus system which will enable owners to win multiple bonuses in certain maiden, conditions and handicap races. KVT will be targeting these next summer. In conclusion, to our inherited partners, many of whom have been KVT stalwarts for so many years, we say a big “thank you” for making us so welcome and for your continued support; to our new partners we hope you are enjoying the experience; and to our prospective partners we say “come aboard... the natives are friendly!” Sam Hoskins and Piers Winkworth October 2014 The Dark Angel Partnership LOT 98 Dark Angel, the proven Group One producer and top class two-year-old sprinter has made an outstanding start to his stallion career. Already the sire of 25 stakes performers, which includes seven Group and five listed winners, this son of Acclamation is the sire of dual-Group One winner Lethal Force (who broke the track record when winning the July Cup) and his excellent record as a sire of two-year-olds is well-illustrated through the Group Two-winning two-year-olds Alhebayeb and Estidhkaar. He also has the notable distinction in having sired a dual Cambridgeshire winner in Bronze Angel. He stood at stud in Ireland this year for a fee of €27,500. This filly’s dam, Timbre, by Dubai Destination, is an unraced daughter of Sheikh Mohammed’s former top-class two-year-old filly Calando (May Hill Stakes) who also went on to finish third in the French 1,000 Guineas. It is the immediate family of the multiple black type performers Champlain (Chesham Stakes) and Diminuendo, the 1988 European Champion threeyear-old filly. Luke Lillingston bought this filly and commented: “She is neat, strong, fastlooking, and beautiful. Her great grandam was the aptly-named and brilliant Diminuendo who, despite being a small filly (an attribute that is shared by many horses in this pedigree), was one of the late Sir Henry Cecil’s great champion fillies. Her sire Dark Angel is now well established as one of Europe’s leading sires and indeed Richard Hannon trains his current highest rated twoyear-old, the dual group winning Estidhkaar. Further high-class two-year-old form is to be found in this filly’s grandam who won the prestigious May Hill stakes at Doncaster and was second in the fillies mile at Ascot. She drew many compliments at the sale in Fairyhouse and is a very exciting prospect. She is eligible for the €200,000 Tattersalls Ireland Sales Race at The Curragh next September and also qualified for the new lucrative Plus 10 Scheme.” This filly will be trained by Richard Hannon and will be a 16 Share Partnership @ £6,995 per share with the first payment due on signing of £4,695 and the balance of £2,300 due by 31st March 2015. The cost of a share includes all charges, including management charges, through to the end of October 2015. Assuming the horse is trained for a further year, we would estimate that the cost per share would be a maximum of £955, payable 1st November 2015, and £2,630 payable 1st April 2016 (to include the management fee) with a further £540 payable 1st August 2016 in the event that the horse has failed to win any prize money. STABLED IN BARN D BOX 136 The Le Havre Partnership The colt is by the exciting young stallion Le Havre, who won the Prix Du Jockey-Club (French Derby) and has enjoyed a fine start to his career as a stallion, most notably through this year’s dual classic-winning filly Avenir Certain who is one of his first crop of runners. Dark Angel / Timbre filly His dam Como, by Cozzene, (often a good source of speed), was trained by Roger Charlton for Prince Khalid Abdullah and was rated a very respectable 87. At stud, she has already produced four winners from six runners including the Listed-winning two-year-old Pencil Hill (also fourth to Henrythenavigator in the Group Two Coventry Stakes at Royal Ascot). He hails from the immediate family of this year’s Champion Sprinter, Sole Power. Being ‘French-bred’, this colt is qualified for the lucrative French Owners Premiums (i.e. he would win 64% extra prize money on top of the standard amount), should he run in France - something we will certainly consider at some stage. Geoffrey Howson purchased the colt and commented: “We shortlisted this colt following our initial inspection and we think he has a sharp, racy physique and will hopefully prove to be a hard-knocking individual. The colt came highly-recommended by Paul Thorman of Trickledown Stud, the consignor.” This colt will be trained by Charles Hills and will be a 16 Share Partnership @ £7,680 per share with the first payment due on signing of £5,380 and the balance of £2,300 due by 31st March 2015. Le Havre / Como colt 864 (WITH VAT) The Makfi Partnership Consigned by Yeomanstown Stud 281 Makfi’s rise to the top is an interesting story, in that he was bred by Sheikh Hamdan Al Maktoum and was in training in the UK but he didn’t set the world alight at home and the decision was made that he should go to the sales as an unraced two-year-old. He made 26,000 guineas and just a month later made a winning debut at Fontainebleau in France for his new trainer Mikel Delzangles. The next season he went on to take the 2,000 Guineas at Newmarket and the Jacques Le Marois at Deauville, which led to him being crowned Champion Miler in Europe. Makfi has enjoyed a good start to stud with his first two-year-olds including winners as far away as Japan and the US and boasts an impressive winners to runners percentage so far. They should progress well with age. This colt’s dam, High Life, is only young but has already produced the exciting three-year-old of this year Azurite (winner of three races to date, including at two-years-old, and currently rated 95). High Life is a halfsister of Gimcrack Stakes winner Bannister as well as to the dam of Middle Park winner Astaire and Prix Morny runner-up Gallagher. Luke Lillingston’s bought this colt and commented: “This colt comes from the second crop of the 2,000 Guineas winner Makfi. For a horse that didn’t make his debut until November of his two-year-old career, Makfi has made a promising start and at the time of going to press is the leading first season sire by percentage of winners to runners. This colt is strong and imposing and his pedigree is littered with high class two-year-old performances - race names such as the Gimcrack, Richmond, Morny, Middle Park, Lowther and Cheveley Park having been won or placed in by some of his close relations.” This colt will be trained by Ralph Beckett and will be a 16 Share Partnership @ £6,790 per share with the first payment due on signing of £4,490 and the balance of £2,300 due by 31st March 2015. Stabled in Barn F Box 26 The Rock of Gibraltar Partnership Rock of Gibraltar, a son of the imperious Danehill, needs little introduction. The multiple Group One winner at two and three for Aidan O’Brien, in the colours of Sir Alex Ferguson, was an outstanding racehorse. He was the first ever horse to win seven consecutive Group One’s in the Northern Hemisphere. Now standing at Coolmore Stud he has sired 58 Group winners, including eleven Group One winners. His best progeny include Eagle Mountain, Mount Nelson and Society Rock. Makfi / High Lite colt This colt’s dam, Izzy Lou, by Spinning World, has produced one winner from one runner to date, in the shape of Juan Alonso, a full-brother to our colt, who won twice as a two-year-old before being sold to Hong Kong for £115,000. Izzy Lou was placed twice at three and is the half-sister to the high-class two-yearold Missit, who has won in the UK, Canada and the USA and took the Group Two Providencia Stakes at Santa Anita, having been runner-up in the Rockfel as a juvenile in the UK for Mick Channon. Izzy Lou is also a half-sister to the useful Rockalong (also by Rock of Gibraltar), a three-time winner for Luca Cumani. Luke Lillingston bought this colt and commented: “This colt is an all bay, attractive and chunky, rather in the same mould as his famous father Rock of Gibraltar. His only sibling the full brother Juan Alonso won twice for team Hannon as a two-year-old last year before being sold abroad for £115,000 at the end of last season. There are two other successful Rock of Gibraltar runners in this family, most notably the multiple group winning Gibraltar Blue and also the 95 rated Rockalong who sold for £160,000 last year to race in Australia. Andrew Balding was delighted when he heard he would train him as he has great luck with other progeny of ‘The Rock’. He has only trained three by the sire to date (Signposted, Soviet Rock and Nabatean) and they have all been highly-rated. There is good reason to be hopeful that this colt can be another one.” This colt will be trained by Andrew Balding and will be a 16 Share Partnership @ £6,855 per share with the first payment due on signing of £4,555 and the balance of £2,300 due by 31st March 2015.
