Freshmen Influx: New Faces in Congress and the Districts
They Represent
As the dust settles from the midterm elections, one thing is clear: there is a large roster of freshmen
Members entering the 114th Congress. In the Senate, pending the outcome of two races, 13 new
senators will be sworn in this January. Similarly, the House of Representatives will welcome 60 new
members.
HOW WILL YOU REACH NEW MEMBERS?
Freshmen Influx: New Faces in Congress and the Districts They Represent provides an
introductory snapshot of the new Members that have been decided thus far, including examples
of local allegiances and important factors that will shape their policy decisions in Congress.
Officially, new Members will tackle these issues when they take office on January 3, 2015. Unofficially,
their job has already begun as they hire key staff, get up to speed on important issues and begin to set
priorities for their first term in office. Now is the perfect time for a smart grassroots strategy that reaches
new Members on their home turf.
WHY NOW?
The unusually high turnover rate will yield an active freshman class. Jockeying for committee
assignments and angling to make their mark by aligning with priority legislation will have new Members
working hard to prepare long before they step foot in their new office.
Beginning in January, major issues touching key interests will be taken up in Congress. For newcomers
coming off the campaign trail, the demands to remain present back home, in touch with constituents
and responsive to local concerns are significant. They will be in their states and districts more than in
years past, following local media and actively engaged with constituents. Now is the time to engage
new Members to raise awareness, promote dialogues and instill deeper appreciations as to why
constituents have a real stake in issue outcomes. Today’s freshmen are tomorrow’s leaders; it is
important to start building relationships with them now.
HOW WE CAN HELP
In today’s political and media environment, it is not enough to simply meet with Members on Capitol
Hill. Successful profile-raising or policy advocacy campaigns require a targeted, integrated approach
emphasizing a strong D.C. lobbying presence coupled with a hyper-local grassroots strategy. Using our
network of political operatives in every congressional district across the country, we can help you align
your goals with local strategies to ensure your organization or your issue gets the right amount of
visibility.
A new roster calls for new thinking. The following pages provide a brief introduction to the freshmen
legislators from a local perspective. Contact us to conduct a more in depth analysis on how to
successfully reach new Members back home.
