pass through Sillian, you will cross the
State border and you will soon reach
Innichen and then Sexten, where the
road starts climbing until reaching the
Pass of Monte Croce Comelico at 1636

as Padola and then climb to the Passo
di Sant’Antonio Pass, after which you
will face a long and hard descent that
will lead you to Lozzo di Cadore.
From here climb towards the Passo
della Mauria pass, cross it and keep
going downhill for over 30 km until
reaching Villa Santina.
Here the route starts to get really hard.
The first short climb leads to the hamlet of Avaglio and the route continues
as far as Comeglians, where a greater
difference in height (1426 metres) begins, which allows to reach the top
of Mount Crostis. From here, down a
slight descent, you will enjoy breath-

St. George’s Church in Comeglians, one
of the oldest churches in Carnia, which
stands in a position that dominates the
whole valley, is worth a visit.
In Villa Santina, on the other hand, we
suggest that you go to the “Col Santino”
hill (above Invillino) to visit the Parish
Church of Saint Mary Magdalene or to the
close “Col di Zucca” hill.
PASSO DELLA MAURIA - 1.298
Descend as far as Tolmezzo and enter
the But Valley up to Cedarchis and from
here up to Paularo to face the second
climb that leads to the Duron Pass (a
4.5 km climb with maximum slopes up
to 20%).
Descend to Paluzza and keep cycling
as far as Sutrio. From here, through
the Calda Valley, you will reach Ravascletto and you will descend to Comeglians. A very short flat stretch will lead
you to Ovaro where “the climb” starts:
AN OVERVIEW OF THE TOUR
The route follows the track followed by the
athletes during the stage of the 94th Giro
d’Italia, which took place on 21/05/2011.
In the past the athletes had faced a track
that featured the same start and finish,
but this route is much harder because at
the end it includes two extremely steep
climbs: that to Mount Crostis and that to
Mount Zoncolan.
P. MONTE CROCE COMELICO - 1.636
Here you will find the first climb that
runs through the whole Arzino Valley
and reaches the location of Sella Chianzutan at 955 metres above sea level.
HOW TO GET TO THE START
The start is situated in Mestre
in the province of Venice.
SESTO - 1.100
Start from Mestre (near Venice) to face
a long level stretch that, crossing the
municipalities of Casale sul Sile and
Oderzo, will introduce you to Friuli
Venezia Giulia. You will pass through
Pordenone, Spilimbergo and Pinzano
al Tagliamento; we are at km 109.7.
DON’T MISS
In Paularo a visit to the town means hospitality of other times. In addition to the
many boroughs and to the three ancient
churches, you cannot miss a visit to the
Mozartina, a private museum where you
will have the chance to admire a precious
collection of perfectly preserved ancient
musical instruments.

AN OVERVIEW OF THE TOUR
The route follows the track followed by
the athletes during the stage of the 90th

very easy, you will cross the towns of
Portogruaro, San Vito al Tagliamento,
Ponte della Delizia to reach Gemona
del Friuli and Tolmezzo.
Here the hard part starts, the first

from here a short descent will lead you
to Villa Santina.

AN OVERVIEW OF THE TOUR
The route follows the track followed by
the athletes during the stage of the 86th
Giro d’Italia on 22/05/2003 and is mostly
included in Carnia because all the climbs
are in this territory. Should one want to
reduce the kilometres, yet keeping the
difficulty high, it is also possible to start

You will also find art and history, preserved by museums, parish churches, churches and important

stone and wood buildings. It is pleasant to reach the pretty small Alpine lakes, the countless waterfalls and
the various waterways, crossing thick woods rich in herbs and flowers, where you will have the chance to
see wild animals, such as chamois, badgers, roe deer, eagles and owls. During the year, in the towns, it is
still possible to find the genuineness of the folk festivals, celebrated according to age-old customs.

COMELICO - 1.636
The territory of Carnia is particularly suitable for sports, such as skiing in winter and mountain biking in
summer, but also climbing and horse riding, paragliding and canoeing, without forgetting the hikes along
nature trails of rare beauty.

SAN CANDIDO - 1.175
Carnia provides unexpected surprises thanks to its deep valleys, to its luxuriant woods and to its high
mountains. It is one of the best preserved areas in the Alpine range and has been able to develop in
harmony with nature, without damaging the environment, nor spoiling customs and traditions, which make
up the deeply-rooted cultural heritage of the mountain people. Discovering Carnia means enjoying nature,
sport, amusement, but also quiet, as well as gastronomy with very tasty local dishes.

AN OVERVIEW OF THE TOUR
A tour for those who love climbs and long
distances. The proposed route allows to

steep side. Make sure your braking system is in perfect working order, because

A route that stretches in the shape of an
eight. The climb to Mount Zoncolan proposed in this tour is not the one known to
everybody as the hardest in Europe, in fact
it is the climb from the less steep side of
scent and, after reaching the bridge,
turn into the State Road SS 52bis towards Arta Terme; cross the spa resort and, shortly after passing the intersection to Zuglio, turn left towards
Paularo.
Follow the road that provides wide
panoramic views and, once in the village, turn left towards Sella Duron and
Ligosullo. Go up the climb, which is
hard in some stretches, then descend
as far as Paluzza, where, after reaching the State Road SS 52bis again, it is
necessary to keep left towards Sutrio;
AN OVERVIEW OF THE TOUR
A very hard route due to the length and
to the difference in height: the climbs are
long and reach high altitudes: we suggest
that you wear suitable clothes and check
the weather conditions. Your effort will be
rewarded when you reach the Sella Zoncolan saddle from the side where cyclists
climb during the stages of the Giro d’Italia.
The hardest climb in Europe is proposed in
this loop route after an intense warm-up.
DON’T MISS

guarding the Pontaiba and Incarojo valleys and, in the surroundings, there had
to be a network of castles and of fortified

In the towns crossed
Sun and snow all winter long in the Zoncolan ski area
plete and satisfying way ever, coming down slopes
covered in powder snow, a magical feeling that only
off-piste skiing can provide. Among the various proposals, one in particular is an off-piste skiing tour
that can be done by many: from the Zoncolan you will
reach, by the ski lifts, the “Das Goles” top (1750 metres). Here the descent begins: you will descend westwards, a summer road will give you the direction,
crosswise, then up a gentle climb you will reach the
Marmoreana di Pozof hut (1583 m.). Past it, wider and
wider slopes, distant valleys, the joy of dominating
still unspoilt spaces. It is impossible to get wrong, the
route is varied, the wood on the sides shows the direction: it is a skiing and nature experience towards
the enchanting villages of the Val di Gorto valley. The
finish is in Clavais, a small village at 826 metres of
height. This off-piste tour is done habitually by ski
instructors with their clients: an unforgettable experience for everyone. Moreover, in the Zoncolan ski
area, cross-country ski enthusiasts will find a 2.5 km
track, which unwinds among woods and gentle ups
and downs: a track suitable for everyone.
The ski area is also equipped with an illuminated toboggan run, ramps for ski jumping, fitness centre and
indoor swimming pool (inside the “Sportur Hotel” and
the “La Perla” hotel).
Among the classic “après ski” facilities, the “Club Tamai” and the Monte Zoncolan restaurant stand out:
situated at the centre of the ski runs that come down
from the top of Mount Tamai at 1764 metres of height,
they are a synonym for warm welcome, hospitality,
good food and great cheerfulness.
Many events will take place during the skiing season:
the New Year’s Party, night walks in the moonlights,
weekends with aperitifs and many charcoal grilled
specialities: lobsters, warty venus clams, swordfish and sea bass, accompanied by excellent D.O.C.
(Denomination of Controlled Origin) wines. Children,
too, will have fun thanks to the parties dedicated to
them. Imagine yourself on a beach of …snow, with the
echo of the music that accompanies the chatting of
people around you, the joyful cries of the children on
the games, and with the “Club Tamai” transformed
into an ice-cream parlour with tasty and irresistible
sundaes. The area can boast the presence of cosy
hotels and Alpine huts and the near famous Spa of
Arta Terme, where many relaxing and wellness treatments (customizable as well) are available.
The fearless ones, those who want to reach the top
of snow-covered slopes with their own forces, almost touching the sky, will have the chance to do ski
mountaineering: ideal for those who love to put their
limits to the test, for those who are never tired and
wish to experience the mountains in the most com-
