Welcome
Welcome to our spring brochure full of fantastic
events at Leighton Buzzard Library Theatre.
This season we have a spectacular list of films for
you to enjoy, including The Revenant, as starkly
beautiful as it is harshly uncompromising with a truly
committed performance by Leonardo DiCaprio; the
lovingly recreated Dad’s Army; Spotlight and the Coen
comedy Hail Caesar! starring George Clooney.
Our very successful Live Screenings continue with an
encore of the Mikado from English National Opera,
brought back by popular demand. We also have
Giselle, a Royal Opera House Live production, the
ultimate romantic classic ballet brought perfectly to
the stage by Peter Wright.
Our live productions reach an all time high with two
wonderful children’s treats for Easter. Stig of the
Dump is brought to us by London Contemporary
Theatre. This timeless children’s classic remains as
charming and entertaining as ever. Rumplestiltskin
is presented by Ripstop Theatre and Norwich
Puppet Theatre. A woolly wonderland of a show
with spinning, weaving, lively puppetry, music and
storytelling.
For adults we have a real treat with Maddy Prior In
Concert. A true legend of British music, Maddy will
perform the music of England, the British Isles and
Eastern Europe in her own unique style. In May we
have the mesmerising show by Trevor Marriot, “The
World’s Worst Serial Killers”. Trevor, who is a retired
murder squad detective presents this two hour audiovisual show.
Whatever your poison (pun intended) you will find
something to interest you and your family this spring.
We look forward to seeing you.

As You Like It
National Theatre Live
Shakespeare’s glorious comedy of love and change comes to the National Theatre for the first
time in over 30 years, with Rosalie Craig (London Road, Macbeth at MIF) as Rosalind.
With her father the Duke banished and in exile, Rosalind and her cousin Celia leave their lives in
the court behind them and journey into the Forest of Arden. There, released from convention,
Rosalind experiences the liberating rush of transformation. Disguising herself as a boy, she
embraces a different way of living and falls spectacularly in love.
Thurs 25th Feb 7pm, Adults £15 Concs £13
Hangmen
National Theatre Live Screening
Following a sell-out at London’s Royal Court Theatre, Academy Award® winner Martin
McDonagh returns to the West End with Matthew Dunster’s award-winning production of his
deeply funny new play Hangmen. In his Oldham pub, Harry (David Morrissey) is something
of a local celebrity. But what’s the second-best hangman in England to do on the day they’ve
abolished hanging? Amongst the reporters and pub regulars dying to hear Harry’s reaction,
his old assistant Syd (Andy Nyman) and the peculiar Mooney (Johnny Flynn) lurk with very
different motives for their visit.
Thurs 3rd March 7pm, Adults £15 Concs £13
The Mikado
English National Opera Encore Screening
Back by popular demand following a sell-out in December, English National Opera’s spectacular
production of The Mikado is a popular hit with audiences of all ages. Experience the irresistible
combination of wonderful wit, memorable melodies and hilarious antics in this much-loved
production from Jonathan Miller. Sung in English with subtitles.

Weds 9th March 7.30pm, Adults £15 Concs £13
Boris Gudonov
Royal Opera House Live Screening
Richard Jones and Antonio Pappano work together again for this production of Musorgsky’s
masterpiece in its compact 1869 first version. This vision of Pushkin’s play about Tsar Boris
Godunov was too much for the management of the Imperial Theatres at the time, who
demanded changes. Many prefer the integrity of this original, which makes few concessions
to operatic conventions. Bryn Terfel takes the title role – one of the most complex characters
in opera – while John Graham-Hall appears as crafty Prince Shuisky
and John Tomlinson as the vagabond monk Varlaam.
Mon 21st March 7.15pm, Adults £15 Concs £13
Giselle
Royal Opera House Live Screening
Giselle is the quintessential Romantic classic, a love affair that begins in the real world and
continues beyond the grave. Giselle transforms from an innocent peasant girl, duped into
love, to a forgiving spirit who saves her lover from death. In Peter Wright’s production, the
dual aspect of the ballet is perfectly achieved: the first act dramatized in rich, naturalistic
detail and the second with a spectral, moonlit beauty.

Lucia Di Lammermoor
Royal Opera House Live Screening
An ongoing feud between two families in 17th century Scotland has terrible consequences
for two young lovers. Featuring what is undoubtedly one of opera’s most poignant and
gripping mad scenes, the opera has not been seen at the Royal Opera House in more than
a decade, so this new production will be a particularly exciting event. The title role will be
sung by Diana Damrau, an expert in the coloratura repertory, while Charles Castronovo takes
on that of her secret lover, the reckless and passionate Edgardo.
Mon 25th April 7.15pm Adults £15 Concs £13
Frankenstein
Royal Opera House Live Screening
Royal Ballet Artist in Residence Liam Scarlett has chosen Mary Shelley’s gothic classic
Frankenstein as the basis for his first full-length narrative ballet for the Covent Garden Main
Stage. A story of betrayal, curiosity, life, death and, above all, love, it explores the very
depths of human nature and our need to find acceptance and a place in the world. For this
exciting new ballet Scarlett returns to the music and brand new score of Lowell Liebermann.
Weds 18th May 7.15pm, Adults £15 Concs £13
Hamlet
Royal Shakespeare Company Live Screening
Hamlet has the world at his feet. Young, wealthy and living a hedonistic life studying
abroad. Then word reaches him that his father is dead. Returning home he finds his world
is utterly changed. Struggling to understand his place in a new world order he faces a stark
choice. Submit, or rage against the injustice of his new reality. As relevant today as when it
was written, Hamlet confronts each of us with the mirror of our own mortality in an imperfect world.
Weds 8th June 7pm, Adults £15 Concs £13
Werther
Royal Opera House Live Screening
Based on Goethe’s novel The Sorrows of Young Werther, Massenet’s opera tells the story of
the poet Werther’s hopeless love for Charlotte, who is committed to another man. The music
is full of lyrical beauty, passion and emotional fervour. The Royal Opera’s Music Director
Antonio Pappano returns to conduct film, theatre and opera director Benoît Jacquot’s classic
production. Italian tenor Vittorio Grigolo stars as Werther, alongside Joyce DiDonato, who sings her first Charlotte (one of the great French mezzo roles) in this staging.
Mon 27th June 7pm, Adults £15 Concs £13
Romeo and Juliet
Branagh Theatre Live
The Branagh Theatre Live season continues with a new vision of Shakespeare’s
heartbreaking tale of forbidden love. Branagh and his creative team present a modern
passionate version of the classic tragedy. A longstanding feud between Verona’s Montague
and Capulet families brings about devastating consequences for two lovers caught in
the conflict. Reuniting the stars of his celebrated film Cinderella, Branagh directs Richard
Madden and Lily James as Romeo and Juliet and Sir Derek Jacobi as Mercutio.

The World’s Worst Serial Killers
A two-hour audiovisual show presented by retired murder squad
detective Trevor Marriott, who in addition to concluding a long
and protracted cold case investigation into the serial killer Jack
the Ripper, has made an extensive study into other serial killers
from around the world. He is the author of the highly acclaimed
best-selling book titled “The Evil Within - The World’s Worst
Serial Killers”.
The show highlights the murders committed by 20 of the world’s
worst serial killers. The show features over 200 photographs of
not only the victims and their killers, but photographs from the
original crime scenes, many of which will never have been seen
before.
Trevor Marriott not only portrays the killers as the monsters
they are, but goes to great lengths to show the errors and bad
decisions made by law enforcement officers in allowing some
of these killers to roam free to kill again before finally being
captured. He also shows the pain and suffering the victims
endured before succumbing to death, and the anguish suffered
by the relatives of the victims when publicly confronting some
of the killers.
This show is not for the squeamish or faint hearted as many
of the photographs shown are of a very graphic nature, which
some may find disturbing. No one under 16 should be admitted
without a parent or appropriate adult.

This musical show tells the story of children evacuated
from London during World War 2. Adults and children
alike have to deal with their own upheavals and trouble
brews as the local kids are unsure how to cope with the
‘invaders’ from the City. Add to that the heartache of
those left behind, and the mysterious inhabitants of the
Darchett Woods…A delightful show, packed with great
