Rhone River Cruise – Paris to Provence
November 2013 Rhone River Cruise – Paris to Provence Burgundy & Provence – a River Cruiser’s Delight Aboard the Avalon Scenery next July we’ll cruise the Saone River as it meanders southward through central France and then flows into the Rhone River near Lyon. We’ll continue on to the Rhone River’s mouth at the Mediterranean. An important trade and transportation route since Greek times, the Rhone winds through the orchards and vineyards of Burgundy and Provence— two of the most scenic regions in France. Lyon has been central to the history of French cuisine and wine-making for more than 2,000 years. The city has magnificent Roman ruins, winding medieval alleyways, and exquisite examples of Renaissance architecture. Lovely Arles is an inspirational city—Van Gogh spent a very productive year along its banks, painting more than a dozen masterpieces, including the one on the cover of this issue. The city also boasts a coliseum from Roman times, the church of St. Trophime, and an ancient Gallo-Roman burial road. Double Basis Cat E Indigo Deck $5,220 Cat B Sapphire Deck aft $5,650 Cat A Sapphire Deck forward $5,690 Cat P Royal Deck $5,810 We’ll cruise past fields of lavender downstream from Lyon and visit Tournon, one of France's oldest medieval cities. Vienne and Viviers, quaint villages along the shores of the Rhone, are surrounded by breathtaking beauty and bathed in history. We’ll visit the white-stone city of Avignon in scenic Provence. Known as the "City of Popes", it was the center of the Catholic Church in the 14th century and its papal palace overlooks the river. Walking tours of several cities’ Old Towns are included in your cost; optional tours to vineyards, wine cellars, museums and a chateau will also be offered during our journey toward the Mediterranean. The Avalon Scenery is a classic riverboat; she carries 138 passengers in stylish comfort. Unlike some riverboats, you’ll have dining options onboard. In addition to the open-seating main dining room, you may want to try the regional specialties and lighter fare offered in the Panorama Bistro; the open-air Sky Deck Bistro features grilled meats and local favorites. Afternoon tea is served daily, and you’ll appreciate the 24-hour self-serve beverage station with complimentary tea, hot chocolate and coffee. St. Croix is an island paradise complete with lush hills, warm turquoise water, a rich history and a wonderful tropical climate. Year-round average highs are about 82°F and easterly trade winds keep the humidity comfortable. This trip delivers great value and beachfront rooms at St. Croix’s #1 hotel, as rated by Trip Advisor, and their Traveler’s Choice 2013 winner. The Palms at Pelican Cove resort, with eight acres of coconut palms and white sand beach, offers a change from the frenetic pace of all-inclusive resorts. You’ll love the laid back, familyfriendly feeling at The Palms. Upon arrival, resort guests are greeted with a complimentary bottle of St. Croix's most famous export—Cruzan Rum—and the fragrance of freshly cut flowers, which the attentive housekeeping staff will place around your room each day. Because the beach spans the entire length of The Palms' property, you will have beautiful beach and sea views from just about anywhere on the resort grounds. Take a leisurely walk, go for a jog, build a sandcastle, or let the sound of the waves lull you to sleep as you relax in a lounge chair. There is a lot to do should you wish to be active. Snorkeling along the fringes of Long Reef, which is just a few yards off shore, is fun and there’s no need to pack your own gear because The Palms has complimentary fins, snorkels and masks for guest use. Most afternoons a resort staff member leads interested resort guests on a guided snorkel tour of the reef. A Klaycote tennis court is available for hotel guests, and complimentary tennis racquets and tennis balls are at the front desk. On weekend nights The Palms often has live musical entertainment for guests’ enjoyment. Our included all-day Island tour will show us the town of Christiansted, whose historic district features tropical colors, Danish Caribbean architecture, and a charming waterfront boardwalk with great shopping and restaurants. During a stop at the Cruzan Rum Distillery we’ll sample the rum they’ve been making since 1650. We'll visit the town of Frederiksted which is nicknamed “Freedom City” because enslaved Africans forced Danish authorities to declare them emancipated in 1848. At the St. George Village Botanical Garden we’ll experience the beauty and brilliant colors of orchids and hibiscus. At the Whim Plantation Museum, guides will share stories of plantation life, and the restored windmill and sugar factory ruins will be open for you to explore. St. Croix is a small island and all attractions are easily accessible by car or cab. Our resort is only 2.7 miles from downtown Christiansted, so you’ll be able to return on your own should you wish. Combine the allure of a lush US Caribbean island with a great price and the resort’s great location and voila! A perfect place to sun and play while March 2014 comes in like a lion. The city is an alluring destination: it is compact, walkable, historic and cultured, and there’s a picturesque wharf and harbor to boot! We’ll stay at the Canary Hotel, a luxury boutique hotel in a great in-town location. We’ll take a walking tour to familiarize us with the town’s layout and highlights, and in your free time you might want to visit the Santa Barbara Museum of Art, the Royal Presidio which was a military fortress built by the Spanish, and Historic El Paseo, California's first shopping center (built in the 1920s). These three sites are within blocks of our hotel. path at the beach, or head to the Old Mission Santa Barbara and the Mission Rose Garden. Be sure to spend time at the city’s palm-lined beach—take a sunset stroll along the waterfront, enjoy a seafood dinner on Stearns Wharf, take a shoreline cruise or go on a fishing excursion from the Yacht Harbor. If biking isn’t your thing, there’s an inexpensive public shuttle to take you the mile to the ocean and along the waterfront. One morning we’ll tour the Casa del Herrero, a historic Spanish estate and gardens in Santa Barbara. One evening we‘ll watch the men of the Ballets Trockadero de Monte Carlo hilariously parody classical ballet at the Granada Theatre. Have you On a day away from Santa Barbara we’ll explore Solvang, a town settled by Danish immigrants in 1911. The flatlands and rolling green hills were so like Denmark that they built windmills and half-timbered buildings to remind them of home. We’ll stop at three wineries for tastings that day, but if that’s not enough to please your palate you can follow Santa Barbara’s ‘Urban Wine Trail’ around town. Learn about and taste wines of different varieties and styles crafted from Santa Barbara County’s best vineyards—the 15 tasting rooms are within walking distance of each other, or an easy cab or pedi-cab ride away. ever seen them perform?
