The Joseph H. Thompson Dodge Brothers Motor Cars dealership was once located on the north end of the building known as the Thompson Block Joe Thompson’s “Memories of Early Depot Town” Joe Thompson was active in the Michigan Automobile Dealers Association as President and Board Member and owned a Dodge dealership in Ypsilanti for more than 40 years. He was a member of the Masons, Knights of Pythias, Kiwanis Club, Washtenaw Country Club and the Ypsilanti Board of Commerce. After his retirement, he was appointed in 1935 to the Mackinac Island State Park Commission by then governor Frank D. Fitzgerald and held that post intermittently until his death in 1977. The post did not pay a salary and Thompson was quoted in the local newspaper: “Everybody has to make a contribution to something civic and the Mackinac Island State Park Commission has been my contribution.” In 1828 Benjamin Thompson, Joseph’s great-grandfather, helped construct many of the mills that flourished along the Huron River. Thompson’s grandfather Oliver once served as mayor of Ypsilanti. The family owned the “Thompson Block” in Depot Town for many years. The Thomp- son Building has been in the news the past few years because of proposed development and arson. -George Ridenour “Memories of the Early Depot Town” I KDYHEHHQDVNHGDQXPEHURIWLPHVWR JLYHP\LPSUHVVLRQRIWKH'HSRWVHFWLRQ MXVWDIWHU ,ZDVERUQRQ0DSOH6WUHHWYHU\FORVHWR WKLV DUHD VR , WKLQN , KDYH D SUHWW\ JRRG LGHD RI WKH EXVLQHVV VHFWLRQ DQG VRPH RI the merchants and their activities in this SDUW RI WKH FLW\ 7KH HDVW VLGH KDG PDQ\ QDPHV7KH(DVW6LGH'HSRW7RZQ&URVV 6WUHHW 'RZQ 7RZQ DV RSSRVHG WR 8S 7RZQ ,QWKH7KRPSVRQ%XLOGLQJWKHUHZDVDOVRD WDLORUE\WKHQDPHRI2WWR%LVNHZKRPDGH hand-made clothes for many of the people ZKR FRXOG DIIRUG LW 5LJKW QH[W WR 0U %LVNH·VWDLORUVKRSZDVWKHFLW\ÀUHGHSDUWPHQWZKHUHWKH\RSHUDWHGRQHKRUVHDQGD FRXSOHRIÀUHPHQZKRVOHSWXSVWDLUVRYHU WKH ÀUH HTXLSPHQW 'XULQJ WKH RII KRXUV 7RPP\:LONLQVRQRSHUDWHGWKLVKRUVHLQ SLFNLQJXSWKHUHIXVHRQWKH'HSRWVWUHHWV <RXNQRZWKH\KDGKRUVHVLQWKRVHGD\V $QG XS RQ WKH WRS RI WKH EXLOGLQJ ZDV D ODUJHEHOOWKDWZRXOGULQJDQGWKHQXPEHU RIVWURNHVRQWKHEHOOZRXOGWHOO\RXZKDW ORFDWLRQ LQ WRZQ WKH ÀUH ZDV EXUQLQJ RU EHLQJH[WLQJXLVKHG $FURVVWKHVWUHHWZDVWKH0LFKLJDQ&HQWUDO'HSRWZLWKDOOLWVEXV\WUDLQVFRPLQJ DQGJRLQJDQGEDJJDJHZDJRQVDQGKDFNV FDOOLQJ RXW IRU WKH +DZNLQV +RXVH DQG 2FFLGHQWDO +RWHO D FRXSOH RI EDJJDJH ZDJRQV WKDW ZHUH KDQGOLQJ WKH EDJJDJH DQGVDPSOHWUXQNVWKDWWKHVDOHVPHQXVHG LQ VHOOLQJ WKHLU ZDUHV 7KH 'HSRW DW WKDW WLPH ZDV D WZRVWRU\ EXLOGLQJ DQG D ÀUH EXUQHGRIIWKHWRSRILWDQGWKH\UHGXFHG LWWRRQHÁRRU2QWKDW0LFKLJDQ&HQWUDO WKH\KDGRQHWUDLQWKH\FDOOHGWKH´SDSHU WUDLQµWKDWOHIW'HWURLWDWR·FORFNDWQLJKW DQG WRRN WKH QHZVSDSHUV DOO WKH ZD\ XS WKHOLQHIURPWKH'HWURLWSXEOLVKHUV7KHQ WKH\KDGDWUDLQWKH\FDOOHG´WKHEOLQGEDJJDJHµ ZKLFK KDG RQH FRDFK RQ WKH UHDU ZLWKKROHVZKHUHWKHJXDUGLDQVFRXOGSRNH WKHLUJXQVRXWLILWZDVKHOGXS,WFDUULHG WKHPRQH\IURP'HWURLWWR&KLFDJR7KHQ there was a car on that train they called the ´VLONFDUµWKDWFDUULHGVLONLQEDOHVWKDWZDV DOOPDGHXSLQIDEULF ,KRSH\RXZLOOSDUGRQPHLI,EHJLQZLWK WKH EXVLQHVV P\ SDUHQWV RSHUDWHG RQ WKH FRUQHURI5LYHUDQG&URVV6WUHHWV,WZDV NQRZQDVWKH´7KRPSVRQ%XLOGLQJµ0\ 7KH 'HSRW ZDV VR EXV\ WKDW LW ZDV UHDOO\ JUDQGIDWKHU2(7KRPSVRQP\IDWKHU DQLFHH[FLWLQJSODFHWRJRDVNLGV0DGL%HQMDPLQ 7KRPSVRQ P\ XQFOH (GZDUG VRQ 3DUVRQV FDOOHG RXW [continued overleaf] 7 ZZZ\SVLODQWLKLVWRULFDOVRFLHW\RUJ:LQWHU Memories of Early Depot Town /DLGODZ D 6FRWFK JDUGHQHU ZDV NQRZQ DOO XS DQG GRZQ WKH OLQH IRU KLV GLVSOD\ RI ÁRZHUV DQG KH ZRXOG EXLOG KXJH DU[continued from page 7] UDQJHPHQWVRXWRIÁRZHUVDQGSODQWVOLNH WKHWUDLQV²´7UDLQJRLQJZHVW$QQ$UERU WKH1LDJDUD)DOOVDQGWKHEDWWOHVKLS0DLQH -DFNVRQ %DWWOH &UHHN .DODPD]RRµ HWF DQG WKH +HDG ER\V JRW RQ WKH WUDLQV DQG 7RPP\7KRPSVRQLQDXQLIRUPVROGWLFNJDYHWKHODGLHVOLWWOHERXTXHWVZKHQWKH\ HWVDQG*HRUJH2EHUVWZDVDEDJJDJHPDQ VWRSSHGLQ<SVLODQWL 7KDWZDVDYHU\ELJSDUWRIWKHWUDYHOLQJLQ those days. 8SWKHWUDFNVDOLWWOHIDUWKHUIURPWKHJUHHQKRXVHZHUHWKHVWRFN\DUGVZKHUHRQFHD $FURVV WKH WUDFNV ZDV WKH IUHLJKW GHSRW ZHHNWKH\VKLSSHGOLYHVWRFNLQFDWWOHFDUV ZKHUH KRUVHGUDZQ GUD\V KDXOHG DOO WKH 7KHGURYHUV²ZHOO,UHPHPEHU0U)DUQIUHLJKWWKDWFDPHLQER[FDUVDQGVKLSSHG VE\+RUQHUDQG'LFN6SHQFHUZRXOGEX\ RXW DOO RI WKH PDQXIDFWXUHG SURGXFWV IRU WKLVOLYHVWRFNDQGWKHQKDYHLWEURXJKWWR <SVLODQWL LQFOXGLQJ WKH 3HQLQVXODU 3DSHU WKH VWRFN \DUGV RQFH D ZHHN ZKHUH WKH\ &RPSDQ\ DQG RWKHU IDFWRULHV WKDW ZHUH VKLSSHGLWRXW GRLQJ SUHWW\ ZHOO 7KH WUDLQ VWRSSHG IRU water there and the gardens next to the de- 7RFRPHEDFNWR(DVW&URVV6WUHHW²RQWKH SRW ZHUH VRPHWKLQJ WR EHKROG 0U -RKQ FRUQHUDFURVVWKHWUDFNVZDVDKRWHOFDOOHG WKH 1HDW +RXVH DV , UHPHPEHU WKH ÀUVW QDPH RQ LW 7KHQ LW ZDV FKDQJHG WR WKH /HZLV +RXVH 7KHQ D IHOORZ FDPH GRZQ IURP0LFKLJDQ&HQWHUQDPHG'DG<DWHV who opened a tavern and did a thriving EXVLQHVV 2OLYHU :HVWIDOO DIWHUZDUGV KDG WKHKRWHODQGLWKDGDEDUGRZQVWDLUVDQG VOHHSLQJ URRPV XSVWDLUV IRU PD\EH RU SHRSOH 1H[W WR WKLV KRWHO ZDV D GUXJ VWRUH WKDW ZDV RSHUDWHG E\ 5REHUW .LOLDQ DQGLQWKHGUXJVWRUHZDVDMHZHOU\UHSDLU RXWÀWUXQE\0U(1&ROE\ZKHUHWKH\ cleaned watches and sold small articles of MHZHOU\.LOLDQKDGDZRQGHUIXOVRGDIRXQWDLQ DQG WKH NLGV DOO ZHQW LQ WKHUH ZKHQ WKH\KDGWKHPRQH\WREX\RQH1H[WGRRU ZDV&ODUN+RXVH·VJURFHU\DQGODWHUWKH VWRUH ZDV RSHUDWHG E\ 0U + $ 3DOPHU DVDKDUGZDUHVWRUH7KHQH[WVWRUHJRLQJ ZHVWZDVDPHDWPDUNHWUXQE\0U&KDUOLH)DLUFKLOGVDQGKLVZLIH/LOO\DQGQH[W WR WKDW ZDV WKH 5REHUW·V +RXVH DQRWKHU EDUZLWKURRPVXSVWDLUV-XVWEH\RQGWKDW ZDVWKH<SVLODQWL5HHG)XUQLWXUH&RPSDQ\ WKDW PRYHG RXW IURP 'HWURLW ZKHUH LW Hours: Sunday 12 p.m. – 5 p.m. Mon 10 a.m. – 6 p.m. Thurs 10 a.m. – 6 p.m. Fri 10 a.m. – 6 p.m. Sat 10 a.m. – 6 p.m. Tues & Wed Closed 115 W.
