Kallerson, senior chaplain Walter Reed Army Medical Center, Washington, DC "Strength for Service has proven to be a real blessing to my husband, Bill, who is proudly serving in our armed forces stationed in Kuwait. Members of the armed services together with the National Guard and Army Reserves are routinely deployed in Iraq, Afghanistan, and neighboring nations while others serve in Asia and Europe. Chaplains and other religious leaders note that these young men and women are now raising questions about spiritual issues they had ignored until they were forced to acknowledge their own mortality. Evan Hunsberger covered and published. an During the Vietnam War, chaplains lamented the fact that they had no spiritual resource to give to the men, but thanks to the work of Evan Hunsberger, a California Boy Scout, a book of daily devotions that provided comfort and guidance to troops during World War 11 and the Korean conflict has been redisupdated version has been The book, Strength for Service to God and Country, was first published in 1942 shortly after the attack on Pearl Harbor. The pocket -sized volume containing a meditation for every day of the year was republished during the Korean conflict. The book was forgotten by all but a few veterans who cherished the 60-year-old volume and continued to find inspiration from meditations written by leading theologians and preachers from the 1940s. One such veteran was Eugene Hunsberger of southern California. His grandson, Evan, noted how important the book was to his grandfather and asked him if it would be a good idea to republish the book for his Eagle Scout project. "That's not a good idea," said Eugene, "that's a great idea." Starting with his grandfathers original book, Evan made slight editorial changes in the text and solicited additional contributions from many of today's religious leaders. Evans new edition was faithful to the 1942 edition while reflecting a contemporary flavor that considers present day concerns. With help from the General Commission on United Methodist Men, the addition of devotions by contemporary religious leaders, and financial contributions from across the nation, 250,000 copies of the historic book have been sent to members of the armed forces and public service personnel. The commission hopes to raise $3 million to send copies of the book to one million members of the military. Timeless Content Evans vision developed before the September 11th tragedy occurred, but the nation's sorrow brought attention to the books timeless message: "God has a plan for your life." Strength for Service to God and Country can be life changing for many courageous yet often under recognized public servants. The fear, loneliness, grief, and other deeply felt emotions experienced in their sacrifice can best be reconciled with a deepening faith. In this small volume, hundreds of respected leaders with diverse views are united, as they join to testify to the truth of Jesus Christ as the answer to life's hurts and pains.
