We believe in possible!
After technical difficulties, the new digital
projector sends out a picture like no other
David Huss is carrying on the
family tradition of the Lyric
movie theater into the 21st century. Let’s face it, in the age of
the Multiplex, it’s hard to keep
an independent theater running.
Seems like the industry is doing
everything in its power to kick
out the little guy.
Somebody, a few years back,
thought it would be a good idea
to make film a thing of the past.
After several false starts, it’s become more or less a reality now.
And like any farmer with a new
tractor featuring a GPS guidance
system, there is a learning curve
and a few technology gremlins to
be worked out.
“Oh the picture and sound
were just phenomenal,” said
Huss about the new system on
Monday. “That is until it stopped
working on Sunday night’s showing. Something wrong with the
video board, there are tech guys
coming in tomorrow (Tuesday,
July 15) to get it working again.
I’m planning to do a Thursday
evening show and a Saturday
matinee at 3 p.m. for How to
Train your Dragon 2, and we’ll
do Transformers Age of Extinction on Friday, Saturday and
Sunday at normal evening show
times at 8 p.m.”
Aside from looking very chic in
high definition, and taking up
every single inch of the Lyric’s
beautiful antique silver screen,
(truly a case of modern high tech
meeting classical elegance) the
new digital projector does have
several positives.
“I take a flash drive and a set
of keys, and plug them in to authorize the server,” said Huss.
“Then we program the movie. On
Saturday it was really handy because I told the machine I
wanted to start the movie at 8
p.m. and it just went ahead and
did it. I didn’t have to rush upstairs after taking tickets to get
the projector going . . . it just
started up all by itself.”
Also it has features for me to
play blue-ray discs, so if a church
or a non-profit wanted to use the
theater for an instructional
movie they could do it. If the Historical Society made a video
about the Pickler mansion or a
non-profit group made a DVD or
a YouTube video promoting the
town of Faulkton or had a listing
of coming events, or somebody
wanted to do a video for local advertising, we could show those in
a half hour preshow before the
movie starts. It’s a technology
that has a lot of interesting potential, so I’m curious to see
where we can go with it.”
“Also, lugging this little hard
drive upstairs is a lot easier than
hauling sixty pound metal canisters worth of film.”
But new technology has foibles
too. Huss said that aside from
the board issue that will be
worked on, he has found the machinery produces a lot of heat,
maybe even more heat than
burning the old phosphorous
sticks of yesteryear. Right now
he’s got electric fans running but
he’s seriously contemplating getting airflow put in.
“Right now the final cost of the
upgrade is sitting at around $45
thousand,” Huss said. “That’s
not counting the replacement of
the air conditioning and heating
system that we’ll be looking at
soon to, because the AC and
heating unit that has worked for
the theater for the last 64 years
has finally given out. That will
be about $15 thousand to replace
it with something that can cool
the projection room and provide
heat in the wintertime. A lot of
folks have asked me about being
open in the winter, and although
it hasn’t been feasible in the
past, I would like to try it.”
Another caveat with the digital films is the up spike in fees.
“The films usually took about
35 percent of my gate cost, but
now with digital the percentage
has gone up to 40 or even 50 percent,” Huss said. “It’s just one
more thing that makes it more
difficult to stay open.”
But there are no plans to close
the theater. Huss said that
though he’s sometimes played
movies to only an audience of
two in the past, he does know
that he’s got a lot of local support.
“This last year we raised about
$22 thousand with the gun raffle
we hosted. If we can do as well,
or better with this year’s gun raffle then we’ll be in pretty good
shape at paying off the upgrade
cost.”
Huss said the best place to do

Father John Helmueller took
over as the local priest for the
parishes of Faulkton, Orient, Polo,
and Seneca at the beginning of
July.
Father Helmueller was born in
1962 and is originally from Maplewood, Minn., just north of St.
Paul. He’s studied theology and
philosophy, and had worked and
studied in Spain, Italy and Rome,
and was ordained as a priest in
2001.
“For me, it’s been living a
dream,” he said. “My faith has always been important to me. When
I was growing up, I would sometimes see things like a traffic accident. Maybe someone was hurt, or
even killed. I wanted to be able to
do something to help. We all have

City wide rummage
sale Saturday 8-noon
The Faulkton Business and Professional Association is hosting
a city-wide rummage sale this
Saturday, July 19 from 8 a.m. to
12 noon (some sites have extended hours).
We control what you see and hear. Weak humans bow down before your
new robot masters. Technology can sure make you feel that way, can’t it. For
the Lyric Theater’s Dave Huss, manager of his family’s business it’s a big
upgrade that’s come with it’s growing pains. Still a programable movie projector that turns itself on when it’s time for the movie to start is nifty.

times of tragedy in our lives, and I
guess I wanted to become a priest
so that I could help people. In the
case of the car accident, the giving
of last rights, that’s something a
priest, does. Baptisms, funerals,
marriages . . . these are all important events, both full of joy and
sadness in people’s lives, and I get
to be a part of that. It’s a humbling
and joyous privilege to serve God
in that way. In short, I wanted to
be a priest because then I would
have the opportunity to bring people closer to our Christ. ”
“I was teaching a Spanish class,
and at the end of the lesson I
asked my students if there were
any questions, and one boy in the
back raised his hand and asked,
‘What is the meaning of life?’ Now
he may have asked it in fun, but
honestly I am somebody who can
give an answer to that question,
according to our faith. Our Catechism answers those questions.
Who made you? Why did he make
you? What’s the meaning of life?
The Catechism says that God
made you so that you could know
him, love him and serve him. So
what is the meaning of life? It’s to
go out and find meaning. It’s a
participation in the light that God
shines into the world. The book of
John gives the most succinct definition. God is Love. God’s love is a
pure, godly love and we become a
reflection of that when we share
that love with each other.”
Father John’s last parish was
based in Flandreau. He once
served Miller, Wessington and
Polo parishes, so Father John said
that he’s already very familiar
with the Polo parishioners and
that it’s nice to be back. Father
John was a good friend of Father
Todd Reitmeyer who served our
local parishes before he died in a
jet ski accident back in 2006.
In his spare time, Father John
loves to get outside into God’s
great creation to fish and hunt, especially with a bow.
Board preps for the coming year, sets yearly assignments
The Faulkton Area Schools
met in regular session on Monday night. The regular meeting
was early, at 5 p.m. with a
budgetary meeting at 7 p.m.
The board approved the
agenda and then made nominations for board chair and vice
chair. Heather Bode was nominated and voted unanimously to
retain her seat as board chair
and Grady Heitmann was reelected vice-chair. The board
voted to approve minutes, financial reports, and payment of
current bills.
They then renewed the current Associated School Board
health insurance policy and declared the following as legal
representatives of the board:
• Faulk County Record as
legal newspaper.
• Supt. Joel Price and Business Official Lisa Raethz as
purchasing agents.
• Dacotah Bank as legal depository.
• Business Official to properly invest surplus funds.
• Business Official as Administrator of Federal Programs.
• Business Official as Supervisor and Treasurer of the Food
Service Program.
• Chain of Command as Superintendent, Business Official
and Secondary Principal in case
of emergencies.
• Superintendent as Asbestos
Coordinator.
• Set the second Monday of
each month as the as the official
meeting date of the Faulkton
Area Schools 24-4 Board of Education.
• Compensate board members at a rate of $65.00 per
month and $65.00 per negotiations meetings.
The board then voted to join
the S.D. United Schools Association for the year, (formerly the
Association of School Boards).
Dr. Price did a final review of
the new policies to go into place
for the 2014-15 school year as
discussed in two previous board

meetings.
Dr. Price also mentioned to
the board that board member
educational webinars were
available for interested board
members as an educational resource from the school board association.
Next the board reviewed the
revisions to the Garry Cunningham Sports Complex agreement
with the City of Faulkton. After
reviewing, board member Todd
Brand was concerned that there
were a few key items missing
from the agreement, such as a
total spending cap. Brand said
that it had been discussed by
both parties, but that nothing
in the agreement as written had
addressed it. The board all
seemed to support the idea of
sharing the cost of watering the
complex, but agreed with Brand
that the ceiling for such a cost
was undefined. They tabled discussion on adopting the revised
agreement until the next meeting so they could confer with
city officials before their next
regular meeting, to finalize details before final approval.
Next the board discussed the
busing issue that had also been
talked about in previous meetings. K&D Busing currently
handles the schools bus services. The school still owns the
bus garage and uses some of it
for vehicle and other storage,
and though there was talk at
previous meeting of selling the
building the board decided that
wasn’t feasible at present.
K&D wants to increase rates,
and has said that the cost of
heating the building is very
high in the wintertime. Their
requested increase is to also
help cover the cost of heating.
Finance officer Raethz said
that if the school paid for the
heating costs, purchasing the
propane as part of the schools
bids for propane it would reduce
costs, and K&D would give
them a mileage discount as
compensation. Dr. Price said
that they would also want to
look into installing a programmable thermostat, so that the
building would save fuel and
money when not occupied, but
not so cold that the plumbing of
the building would freeze.
Board member Brand had
many questions regarding
using teachers and administrative staff as substitute drivers
for the busses and whether or
not the school was getting the
service that they were paying
for. Dr. Price said that realistically the board had little choice
than to go with K&D busing, as
no other potential services were
available. He did however agree
that these questions should be
asked, and suggested that the
Transportation
Committee
meet personally with K&D before the next regular meeting,
so that whatever negotiated
conclusion could be reached, it
would happen well before the
beginning of the start of term.
The board agreed and the two
members of the Transportation
Committee, Kelly Aesoph and
Grady Heitmann would meet
with K&D.
Next Raethz listed the current salaries (see listing of
salaries on page 6 included in
the official minutes).
The board voted to hire Todd
Brand as head girls basketball
coach for the year (Brand abstaining from a vote regarding
himself). The board then voted
to hire Theresa Edgar as the
competition cheer coach for
2014-15.
Lastly before adjournment
chairwoman Bode asked the
board at large if committee assignments would be staying the
same. Even though this was not
on the agenda, she thought it
worth bringing up. Everyone
agreed that board members
would stay on the same committees for this coming year.
The board then adjourned
and recessed until 7 p.m. to
have the preliminary budget
hearing. Only Bode, Brand, and
Gary Bowar remained for the
budget meeting, giving the
board the three members for
quorum.
Raethz took the board
through the preliminary budget
for the 2014-15 year. Raethz explained that the $20,000 set
aside funds for technology was
included in the capital outlay
budget as per board request
from the June meeting. She also
noted budget line items such as
money set aside for a possible
election and wanted to know if
the board wanted priority to be
given to the Google chrome
books that would be issued to
the board. Dr. Price said that
the idea is that someday soon,
they’ll be able to do everything
paperless, using Google drive,
so that the board members
would not come to the meeting
with stacks of paper, but rather
a digital devise that would
make all the school related
paper work be able to reach a
board member wherever he or
she went, providing internet access.
After only 15 minutes of
budgetary review, the budget
discussion was tabled for later,
and the board adjourned for the
night at 7:15 p.m.

Desi Wieseler joined 212 first year missionaries in Ave Maria, Fla. this
summer for five weeks for training to be sent onto campuses as a missionary. She is pictured, third form the left in front of the Ave Maria Cathedral and
also in the inset.
Wieseler receives training
in college missionary work
by JoAnn Schaefers
Orient/Polo correspondent
Desirae Wieseler, 22, of rural
Orient is excited about her recent
missionary training and the
chance to work on a college campus.
“What a summer I have just
experienced!” was Desirae’s enthusiastic comment. “I just finished my first summer training
with FOCUS (Fellowship of
Catholic University Students),
after receiving my bachelors degree in math education from
U.S.D.”
Over the course of my freshman year of college, I got involved with FOCUS on my
campus. It was through the witness of a missionary that I saw a
living example of the faith and
desired that for myself. I attended a FOCUS Conference in
St. Paul, Minn. in January and
that was when I truly encoun-
tered the person of Jesus Christ.
From coming to know Him personally, I then desired to share
that love and joy I had experienced with other people,”
Wieseler said.
In June, she joined 212 first
year missionaries in Ave Maria,
Fla. (near Naples), this past summer for five weeks of formation
and training to be sent onto campus as a missionary. She learned
from and heard several speakers
who came in to teach about scripture, apologetics, prayer and
evangelization.
“The tools we learned prepared
us for our mission on the college
campus,” Desi explained. “We
practiced how to build successful
Bible studies, how to share the
gospel and mentor students in
the faith while teaching them
how to teach others. I desire to
invite students to a renewed encounter with Jesus Christ and an
openness for them to encounter
Him because no one is excluded
from the joy brought by the
Lord.”
Wieseler will be serving at the
University of Wisconsin, La
Crosse with a team of four
FOCUS missionaries. “We will be
meeting students on campus and
investing in relationships with
them, by inviting them to small
group events and Bible studies.
Our goal will be helping them to
grow in their walk with Jesus.”
“College students are pulled
and torn in so many directions
and they are at such a pivotal
point in their lives,” she explained. “They are making life
decisions revolving around the
careers they will be choosing and
so much more. Because of this,
our ministry exists to transform
today’s culture with the most impact for our generation.”
Desirae’s closing comment was,
“accepting the call to be a missionary, without fear of what God
is asking me to do and how he is
asking me to follow him, is to
share with others the gift of faith
I have received.”
Since 1998, FOCUS has grown
from just two missionaries serving on a single college campus to
hundreds of missionaries serving
on campuses across the country.
From private colleges to big state
schools, secular campuses to
Catholic, FOCUS missionaries
are reaching and influencing our
nation’s next generation of leaders.

Lush fields, cool July
weather with gentle rain
Wednesday, July 16, 2014
After the hot and humid days
over the 4th of July holiday it’s
been a relief to relax with some
cooler days. In Faulkton, David
Bartholomew reported temperatures in the high forties
overnight with just a shot of
rain, .20 inches over the weekend.
In Orient, Rex Young reports
like wise cooler weather, though
they got a bit more rain than
Faulkton did.
“I’ll sure take these cooler
days,” he said. “It’s all right for
the corn and the beans if they
slow up a little in the cooler
weather. At least they aren’t
being baked dry. We had about
.53 inches from 8 p.m. Saturday
evening to 8 a.m. Sunday morning, so it was just about perfect.
Everything looks nice and green.
Very lush, with lots of good feed
for the cattle.”
In Chelsea, Dennis Carda reported much the same but with
less rain.
“Things have been good all
around,” he said. “The cooler
temperatures have been good for
everybody, even the crops. We
had just a sprinkle of rain, I’d
say no more that .05. The crops
are progressing nicely, maybe
through the first half of growth.
Maybe in the next ten days the
corn will be tasseling out. The
beans are drying up, and becom-
ing that nice green color that
everybody likes. We aren’t hurting for rain right now, but this is
South Dakota, so an inch or two
out of the sky would be greatly
appreciated by everybody.”
Carda said that he took a recent trip to Chicago, and having
a look at the crops in Minnesota
and Nebraska on his way there
and back, he felt that our local
crops were looking a whole lot
better.
In Onaka, Shannon Waldman
at CW Repair said that there
wasn’t much shaking out in the
fields that day.
“We had about .60 of rain here
in Onaka, and it dipped down to
about 50 degrees last night,” he
said. “It’s been nice and cool.
Some guys are out doing a second cutting of alfalfa, and some
are doing some haying. The
wheat and the corn are looking
pretty good.
Jeff Greiner in Seneca reported even more rainfall.
“We’ve had about an inch and
a half since last we talked,” he
said. “It’s cooled down nice the
last couple of days. All the crops
I’ve seen look pretty good. We
ought to have a nice week of
growing with that good shot of
rain we had. The rain has been
pretty regular the last three or
four weeks. Certainly better
than last year.”
With a whopping 19.65
inches in the month of June,
Canton established a new state
record for the wettest month at
any location in South Dakota.
Canton has been an official National Weather Service Cooperative Observer location since
1896. The previous wettest
month on record in the state
was May 1946 at Deadwood,
with a total of 18.61 inches.
Canton received 13.16 of the
month's total rainfall in three
days; with a single day total of
8.43 inches on June 17, 2014.
"This would likely be the most
over a three-day period in
South Dakota, though not an
officially kept record," said
Dennis Todey, SDSU State Climatologist.
He added that the monthly
total is considered preliminary
while being reviewed for final
quality checks and final verification.
Several other stations set
records for their individual location including: Sioux Falls
with 13.70 inches; Centerville
with 13.50 inches and Vermillion with 11.46 inches. "Nearly
all stations reporting from Minnehaha, Lincoln, Union and
Clay Counties had more than
11 inches. Many locations between Sioux Falls and Canton
ranged from 13 to 16 inches for
the month," Todey said.
Heavy
rain
throughout
southeastern South Dakota
during the month of June led to
documented flood damage
which impacted urban and
agricultural areas. "Extensive
damage is due to both excessive
rainfall and severe weather.
Many roads, highways and
bridges have been washed out,"
said Laura Edwards, SDSU Extension Climate Field Specialist. "Flooding has brought
debris into cropland and
washed crops into ditches.
Rain, hail, wind and tornadoes
have affected farmland, buildings and vehicles. This combination has resulted in some
management challenges for
farmers who have had multiple
hazards affect their farms."
The northwest part of the
state had a very heavy precipitation month as well. Two stations in that region set new
monthly records: Bison, with
8.07 inches, and Timber Lake
with 9.89 inches.
Some roads were also washed
out in the northwest. Edwards
said that standing water in
some row crop areas of the region has made it challenging
for farmers to plant sunflowers
and other oilseed crops. "For
existing crops, some fields have
lodged wheat, barley or oats,
and diseases like wheat scab
may become an issue," Edwards said.
In western South Dakota the
rainfall in June created exceptional grazing and haying conditions for many western South
Dakota producers, and stock
ponds are full to overflowing.
Moving into the weekend of
July 5 and 6, Edwards said the
forecast shows a brief warm-up
before temperatures average
out. "The active weather pat-
Canton takes state record
for most monthly moisture
tern over the last few weeks
will settle down this week, although localized storms are
common this time of year," she
said.
July is typically one of the
wettest months of the year for
most of the eastern counties,
with 2 to 4 inches on average.

“Your Mother is always with you. She’s the whisper of
the leaves as you walk down the street. She’s the smell of
certain foods you remember, flowers you pick, the
fragrances of life itself. She’s the cool hand on your brow
when you’re not feeling well. She’s your breath in the air
on a cold winter’s day. She is the sound of the rain that
lulls you to sleep, the colors of the rainbow; she is Christmas morning. Your Mother lives inside your laughter.
She’s the place you came from, your first home, and she’s

room carpet was being cleaned.
Fancy nails followed coffee hour.
Friday was Mass with Fr.
John. And our volunteers were
ready to assist residents to the

seven games with Clara Smith
the big winner. This was Florence Winters’ birthday so birthday cake and ice cream were
enjoyed. Family joined her and
her cake was from the VFW

On Saturday it was time for
some 6-5-4 fun. Avis Meyer and
Duane White keep the game in
line. Avis also joined us for

Younger people concentrated
in six South Dakota counties
According to a recently released U.S. Census Bureau report South Dakota was among
seven states in the U.S. that
showed a decline in median age.
"A number of those states are located in the Great Plains. This
is an interesting change in an
era when the number of people
over the age of 65 is projected to
increase," said Leacey Brown,
SDSU Extension Gerontology
Field Specialist.
The median age in South
Dakota is 36.8. This age, Brown
said, is a slight decline from the
previous estimate. "It is important to note median is not average. For example, if you have
five people ages 3, 9, 12, 24, and
57, the median age would be
12," she said. "This tells us very
little about the people of South
Dakota or where they reside."
Where the young live
While South Dakota may be
attracting younger people,
Brown said those moving to the
state are moving to very specific
areas of the state. "Of the 67
counties in South Dakota, 39
have a median age above 40,"
she said.
In South Dakota, 389,170 people are under the age of 35.
More than half of those or
199,126, are concentrated in six
counties in South Dakota. Four
of those counties are located in
more urban areas of the state,
including Lincoln, Minnehaha,
Pennington and Meade. The remaining two host the largest
universities in the state Brookings and Clay Counties.
"Younger people are concentrated in very limited geographic areas of the state,"
Brown said.
What is attracting young peo-
ple to flock to the Great Plains?
The U.S. Census Bureau suggested younger men are coming
to the Great Plains due to the
Bakken oil boom, explained
Peggy Schlechter, SDSU Extension Community Development
Field Specialist.
"While that may the case for
North Dakota, only two of the
counties discussed by my colleague are near the Bakkaen Pennington
and
Meade,"
Schlechter said. "South Dakota
seems to be making some gains
in drawing a younger population."
How can our rural communities benefit from this migration
pattern? Schlechter said the answer to this question can be
found by looking at some of the
things people consider when
planning a move to a new community. "People often look for a
safe community with close prox-
imity to relatives. They also
seek communities that offer
quality education and health
care. Some reasons people may
choose to move to a rural community include open spaces, a
slower pace of life, and recreation."
If small communities can offer
opportunities to make a living
and provide a lower cost of living, Schlechter said younger
people might migrate. To assist
communities looking to market
themselves, SDSU Extension
has developed Marketing Hometown America program.

Choose Wisely Campaign
Part 2: The American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP), in conjunction
with most other primary care and specialty physicians groups in the United
States, has developed a list of recommendations for Physicians to follow in
practice with their patients. This “Choose Wisely Campaign” has grown substantially over
the last year and includes hundreds of medical tests, procedures, and medicines that may
be over-used. These Physician Groups believe that eliminating most use of these things
may help to improve quality of medicine, reduce potential harms of these items, and reduce cost.
The top 6-10 items to avoid in this Choose Wisely Campaign are as follows:
6) No elective (non-medically indicated) inductions of labor or C-Sections before 39
weeks gestational age.
7) No elective (non-medically indicated) inductions of labor between 39 and 41 weeks
gestational age unless cervix is deemed favorable.
8) No screening for Carotid Artery Disease in asymptomatic adult patients.
9) No Pap Smears on women over 65 who have had prior screening and are not at high
risk for cervical cancer.
10) No HPV screening in women younger than 30.
Many other recommendations and patient friendly information can be found at
www.choosingwisely.org. Your medical provider may or may not agree with these items.
Some procedures are not Screening, they are Diagnostic, and other factors may be taken
into consideration in the decision making process. You should work with your physician in
order to make the most appropriate choices for your health.

Learn about floral
arranging at McCrory
McCrory Gardens announces
another educational program,
"Floral Arranging with Your
Own Garden Flowers" with Kim
James, Instructor of Horticulture at SDSU. The program will
be held on Thursday, July 17, at
McCrory Gardens, starting at
6:30 p.m. This event is part of
McCrory Gardens Third Thursday series. It is free and open to
the public.
"Kim loves working with flowers and getting her students excited about floriculture," said
David Graper, SDSU Extension
Horticulture Specialist and Director of McCrory Gardens.
James teaches several Horticulture courses at South Dakota
State University and is the Advisor of the Horticulture Club. She
has taught workshops on doing
floral design and floral judging.
During the Third Thursday
workshop, James will take the
group out to the gardens to collect some materials to create a
demonstration arrangement. If
there is enough interest, there
may do a make-and-take workshop in the future.
"We certainly have a lot more
flowers to work with here at McCrory Gardens than the typical
home garden, especially if you
just focus on the ones that have
the beautiful blooms, but there
are likely a plethora of overlooked plants that can be used to
make
arrangements,"
said
James.
During the course she will also
discuss basic design components
and methods for keeping
arrangements looking good
longer.
To attend, meet at the Education and Visitor Center at Mc-
Crory Gardens, 631 22nd Ave. in
Brookings, at 6:30 p.m. on July
17. For more information, contact McCrory Gardens at 605688-6253, email: mccrorygar

Well, I decided it's high time I
put some news in the paper. I arrived in Nebraska five minutes
after baseball sized hail had hit
Mike's place. I spent the day
cleaning glass out of our bedroom while Mike was helping his
son board up all the windows in
his house and ours! Then Mike
replanted the corn, rained five
inches and flooded the creek by
our place which flooded the corn!

Needless to say it's been quite a
wild time here in Nebraska but I
love it here. My dogs are still adjusting to being in a fenced in
area, they get to run around the
farm in the morning before we
let the ducks out for the day. I
have a great job and only have to
drive 14 miles to work.
While I've been in Nebraska
Kara, Matt, Jessica and Brian
came to visit Barb and Bob at
their new home in Ipswich.
While I was busy moving to Nebraska they were busy moving
into their new home. I'm still not
moved in yet! My brother Mike
was a color guard at Trail Days
in Ipswich and also drove his

mistaken I think he drove it in

and they worked at hauling iron.
Heard my sister Marie and her
husband Bill went to Ireland. We
spent a quiet day at the farm in
Nebraska for the 4th. I had enjoyed a fireworks display they
held in Dodge where I work on
the 2nd. Will try and get the
news in at least every couple
weeks from now on.
Hope you are all well in SD.
(This week’s news)
Monday Suzi spends the day
mowing. Stella, Shelbie, Katie
and Paisley went shopping in
Omaha yesterday and bring Suzi
a new birdhouse.
Tuesday tragedy hits here,
someone drove over Paris, our
pretty, feisty little white dog.
Katie and Stella dug a grave for
her while Mike made her a coffin. Suzi returns from work to
hear the news.
Wednesday Suzi goes to work
in Dodge while Mike is busy
spraying the corn.
Thursday Mike finishes spraying and Suzi heads to work. It's
pretty quiet in the house without
Paris around anymore.
Friday Suzi loads up her dogs
and heads for South Dakota.
After a long trip she decides to
soak in a hot tub and discovers
there's no water in the house!
Chris comes to her rescue and
fixes the problem. Guess the
man who took out the water filter system shut off the water

Norris’ book will be read and
talked about by community
reading groups across the state
during discussions such as the
one that will take place in
Faulkton leading up to the
2014 South Dakota Festival of
Books in Sioux Falls, Sept. 26 28. As the One Book author,
Norris will visit our eight cities
statewide, as well as provide a
keynote lecture at the 2014
Festival.
“Dakota” fits South Dakota
Humanities Council’s 2014 thematic exploration of the 125th
anniversary of South Dakota
statehood, which occurred November 2, 1889. SDHC themes
provide a platform for communities across the state to focus
on issues that dominate current South Dakota discourse -issues that affect all of us on
some level. We encourage you
to join the ongoing conversation.
All are welcome to attend the
upcoming One Book SD discussion in Faulkton.
Books and discussion guides
are available at the Faulk
County Library.
