Stanislaus County
Transportation
Guide
See Reverse Side for Spanish Information
Foreword
For getting to work, school, medical appointments or to visit family and
friends, access to transportation is vital to Stanislaus County residents.
Whether this be through public, private or specialized transportation,
inter-city, intra-city or interregional transportation, meeting these needs is
important to County residents’ quality of life.
To help provide transportation information to County residents, the
authors have created the “Stanislaus County Transportation Guide” to
provide an easy to use reference manual of the many transportation
modes available within Stanislaus County. Our goal is to assist individuals with their specific transportation needs, as well as help agencies
provide transportation information to their customers and clients.
To meet a person’s transportation needs, we have found there are two
steps; finding out what transportation services are available and how to
contact them, and then learning how to use those services. The purpose
of this guide is to help County residents with the first step; providing
information of available transportation services.
The Guide is a companion project to the “Taking the Bus” video that
helps County residents with the second step; how to use Stanislaus
County’s public transportation services.
We hope this Guide helps you meet your transportation needs. For
more information about the “Stanislaus County Transportation Guide” or
the “Taking the Bus” video, contact the:
Stanislaus County Department of Public Works Transit Division

Please note that the maps and information included with this guide
are current at the time of printing. As all Transit Systems
continually up-date their routes and information for better service
and on time performance, you should contact each respective
transit provider for an updated system map, schedule, ride guide or
brochure of their services.
The Stanislaus County Transportation Guide is not copyrighted and we

How to Use This Guide

you to find and learn about the various transportation services in
Stanislaus County. Sections include; local public and private

for your convenience is information about public transit providers for

Local Public Transportation Fixed Route Services
Fixed Routes are a type of transit service that provides travel along designated or fixed
routes and adheres to set schedules. Fixed routes often have designated bus stops
along their route where boarding and de-boarding the bus take place.
The references to services listed below are typical of the fixed route operators in this
guide. Following this section you will find specific information on each fixed route
service provider.
Where to Board Buses Typically buses will stop at all designated bus stop locations on a fixed route. These are
marked by either a bench, shelter and or sign. If no one is waiting at a designated bus
stop/shelter and if the driver is running late, the driver may proceed past the stop
without stopping the bus. If the driver is on time or ahead of schedule he or she will
stop and wait until the scheduled time of departure to leave the stop. A bus should
NEVER leave early from a designated stop.
Catching the Bus When at a designated stop, as the bus approaches, position yourself so the driver
knows you want to ride. Back away from the curb as the bus approaches. Please be at
your bus stop at least five (5) minutes before the bus is scheduled to arrive.
Exiting the bus Please let your driver know that you want to exit the bus at least one (1) full block
before your stop by telling the driver or pulling the cord over the window. The driver will
then stop the bus as close to the next designated bus stop as can be done safely.
Jury Duty You can ride free to jury duty on any of the public transit services listed in this guide
except on Merced County Transit and San Joaquin RTD fixed routes. Just show your
juror summons or jury bus pass to the bus driver when boarding.
Bike and Ride / Bikes on the Buses Passengers can bring their bicycles along when traveling on any of the buses. The bike
racks hold up to two bikes and are available on a first come, first serve basis. For more
information turn to page 48.
Wheelchairs All public transit vehicles are wheelchair accessible and have space for two (2)
wheelchairs.

Bicycles - Paths / Trails
Bicycle Paths / Trails (Bikeways) Bicycle Paths and Trails (Bikeways) are classified by three (3) different types;
Class I Bikeway Typically called a “bike path”, a
Class I bikeway provides bicycle
travel on a paved right-of-way
completely separated from any
street or highway.
Class II Bikeway Often referred to as a “bike lane”,
a Class II bikeway provides a
striped and stenciled lane for
one-way travel on a street or
highway.
Class III Bikeway Often referred to as a “bike route”,
a Class III bikeway provides for
shared use with motor vehicle traffic
and is identified only by signing.
Throughout Stanislaus County there are
numerous Bikeways. Many are
designated with signs or pavement
markings. Modesto alone has over 57
miles of Bikeways. There are many state,
regional and local programs that are
ongoing to enhance the Bikeways in
Stanislaus County. For more
information regarding each cities or the
County’s Bikeway program, please

Bicycles - Bicycle Paths / Trails
Bicycles - Bike & Ride / Bikes on Buses
Bike & Ride / Bikes on Buses Bike and Ride or Bike on Buses programs allow you to take your bike with you when
you ride on many transit systems listed in this guide. Each transit provider has rules
and regulations regarding bicycles. The information below has been generalized for
this guide. Please consult each transit provider for more information regarding their
Bike and Ride programs. Loading and unloading your bicycle takes approximately 20
seconds.
Loading your Bike 1
Be off your bicycle when waiting at the bus stop so that the driver will recognize
you as a passenger. Remove all loose items, such as accessories, water
bottles, air pumps, luggage, bags, etc. before loading.
2
After the bus has come to a complete stop and you are sure that the bus driver
sees you, move to the bike rack located on the front of the bus. Load bikes
from the curb side only, and never the traffic side of the bus. Remember, make
eye contact with the bus driver.
3
Squeeze up on the release handle which is
located in the middle of the rack, and lower
the rack from its upright position with one
hand while holding your bike with the other
(Picture A).
A
4
Lift the bike onto the rack, fitting the wheels
into either the front or back positions. Wheel
slots are clearly labeled for front and back
tires. Use the back slot first if empty
(Picture B).
B
Continued on next page.
Bicycles - Bike & Ride / Bikes on Buses
49
5
Raise the support arm over the front tire, so
that the hook rests next to the brakes just past
the highest point of the tire (Pictures C & D).
6
Do not lock your bike to the rack. Board the
bus and pay your fare.
Bike Safety Tips
Make eye contact with the
driver when using public transit
bike racks.
Bicyclists share the same right
of ways and are subject to the
same responsibilities as other
vehicle operators.
C
D
Ride on designated bikeways
where possible.
Always stay out of the
dangerous “door zone” by
riding at least three (3) feet
from parked cars on the street.
Unloading your Bike 1
Inform the driver that you will be unloading your bike as the bus approaches
your stop. This will ensure that the driver waits until you are clear of the bus
before leaving the stop. Use the front door of the bus. Unload your bike from
the curb side, never the traffic side. Remember make eye contact with the
driver.
2
Raise the support arm odd the front tire and fold it down to its original position.
Lift your bike out of the rack.
3
If the rack is empty, fold the rack into the locked, folded position by squeezing
the release handle.
4
Step away from the bus to the curb with your bike. Wait until the bus pulls
away. Never proceed directly in front of the bus into traffic.
