Michael Gaughan, Grand Marshal at
2009 Nebraska’s Big Rodeo
Michael Gaughan was born in Omaha, NE on March
24, 1943 and has been a Las Vegas resident since 1952.
He graduated from Bishop
Gorman High School in
1961, graduated from
Creighton University in
1965 with a BSBA in
Accounting and received
his MBA in Labor Relations from the University
of Southern California in
1967.
In 1965 Mr. Gaughan
became an owner and
ultimately the casino manager of the El Cortez Hotel.
This ended in 1972 when
he opened the Royal Inn
Casino. After selling the
Royal Inn, Mr. Gaughan built the Barbary Coast Hotel, the
Gold Coast Hotel, the Saint Louis Casino Queen Riverboat,
the Orleans Hotel, the Suncoast Hotel and the South Point
Hotel Casino and Spa.
He is currently a board member of Las Vegas Events, the
National Finals Rodeo Committee, Valley Hospital of Las
Vegas and the National Cowboy Hall of Fame in Oklahoma
City. Mr. Gaughan also sits on the Foundation Board of
the University of Nevada Las Vegas and had taught in the
school’s College of Hotel Administration.
Michael Gaughan played a pivotal role in bringing the
National Finals Rodeo to Las Vegas in 1985 and in negotiating multiple contract extensions that assured the NFR’s
position as the richest prize money rodeo in the world.
The total purse rose from $1.8 million to more than $5
million in the first 20 years in Las Vegas with an economic
impact to the community in that span that was estimated
at more than $500 million by the Las Vegas Convention
and Visitors Authority. Gaughan serves on the Wrangler
NFR Committee and is a long-time sponsor, first locally
and then nationally, of the NFR and the Professional Rodeo
Cowboys Association
In 2007 Mr. Gaughan was inducted into the Pro Rodeo
Hall of Fame.
