Moss Reunion Full of Memories
Holdenville TRIBUNE VOLUME 13, NUMBER 14 HUGHES COUNTY, OKLAHOMA 1 SECTION 50¢ WEDNESDAY, MARCH 20, 2013 Moss Reunion Full of Memories Did Women’s Lib Begin At Moss? To say that Moss School in the forties was conservative is an understatement. It was appropriate that it be. The people in the community were poor, requiring that the school be financially conservative. The families were decidedly Christian in their daily lives. Guy Weber was a JOHNNY JAY AND CAROL YARBROUGH perfect fit as superintendent. Teachers were not allowed to smoke, though some did. They didn’t think we knew about it. But we did. A pregnant teacher could not teach. I suppose they didn’t want us to know where babies came from. A student could not utter one profane word without getting into trouble. And if he or she got into trouble at school, he was in worse trouble when he got home. No one ever, ever, sassed a teacher. And then Geneva Jo Davis came to Moss and handled all music programs. She was perhaps the best music teacher to ever teach anywhere in Oklahoma. Students and parents loved her. She could bring out the best in any music student. But conservative she was not. She seemed to enjoy teaching music, and she and her students had fun. In fact, Miss Davis enjoyed all of life. She was the most liberated woman I have known. Then or since. And she did not take supervision well. Administration was about half way afraid to tangle with her. She marched to her own music and to that only. Once day Superintendent Weber called her into his office and closed the door. He sat down at his desk, was quiet for a moment while he decided how to best approach the subject. “Miss....ah...Miss Davis,” he began cautiously, “It s been reported that you smoke.” “Yes,” she said quickly before he could continue. She leaned over the desk and looked him directly in the eye. “And I drink and sometimes tell dirty jokes.” Mr. Weber rearranged the tiny chew of tobacco that he kept secretly (?) hidden in his jaw, and looked away from her. Finally, he stood as if to dismiss her and said, “Well...I knew there wasn’t anything to it, but I had to ask.” Clayton Adair, Class of 1954 (Clayton attended Moss 1942-53 and graduated from Holdenville - 1954) MRS. CLIFFORD & JOAN (TAYLOR) BUTLER JOHNNY AND PAT ROBERTS ELTON AND ROSE CLARK SIBLINGS MARY ANN ROBERTS, GERALD ROBERTS AND KATHERYN ROBERTS PATSY (ROGERS) SEPEDA CAROLYN, DONNA, JOVAUGHN AND BILL KIBBY PAGE A-2—HOLDENVILLE TRIBUNE—MARCH 20, 2013 Several Alumni reunions are slated within the next few months. With that in mind, we thought this would be a perfect time to share one of our favorite “alumni” articles. A special thanks to my mother-in-law, Beth Leewright, for sending this to me. Lunch With The Girls A group of 15-year-old girlfriends discussed where to meet for dinner. Finally, they agreed to meet at the Dairy Queen, next door to the Ocean View restaurant, because they had only $6.00 among them and Brad Johnson, the cute boy in Social Studies, lived on that street. 10 years later, the group of 25-year-old girlfriends discussed where to meet for dinner. Finally, they agreed to meet at the Ocean View restaurant, because the beer was cheap, the restaurant offered free snacks, the band was good, there was no cover charge, and there were lots of cute guys. 10 years later, the group of 35-year-old girlfriends discussed where to meet for dinner. Finally, they agreed to meet at the Ocean View restaurant, because the cosmos were good, it was right near the gym and, if they went late enough, there wouldn’t be too many whiny little kids. 10 years later, the group of 55-year-old girlfriends discussed where to meet for dinner. Finally, they agreed to meet at the Ocean View restaurant, because the prices were reasonable, the wine list was good, the restaurant had windows that opened (in case of hot flashes), and they served fish which is good for your cholesterol. 10 years later, the group of 65-year-old girlfriends discussed where to meet for dinner. Finally, they agreed to meet at the Ocean View restaurant, because the lighting was good, and the restaurant had a senior citizen discount. 10 years later, the group of 75-year-old girlfriends discussed where to meet for dinner. Finally, they agreed to meet at the Ocean View restaurant, because the food was not too spicy, and the restaurant was handicapped-accessible. 10 years later, the group of 85-year-old girlfriends discussed where to meet for dinner. Finally, they agreed to meet at the Ocean View restaurant, because they had never been there before. My Dad and Uncle dug the cistern with an old pulley to haul up the yellow clay. One morning Dad went down to dig, my Uncle was late and Mother and I could not haul him up. He ran out of air, nearly fainted before my uncle showed up. With half pipes along the ROSE MORROW AND SHARON NOLEN EDDIE & MARY ANN PUCKETT edge of the roof, it caught rain water. We would lower our milk and butter down near the water to keep it cool. We also had a rain barrel that we used for cooking and washing needs. Trading eggs or old batteries for the Capper’s Weekly paper. Selling Cloverine salve. Making snow ice cream. Watermelons, the price dropped, so we hauled them up to the barn, busted them ate the hearts and feeding the rest to every animal on the place. Chickens, ducks, dogs, cows, horses and hogs. The bee tree we called a man to cut in the winter time. They were small black mean bees. The man said meanest he had seen. Being a small kid, I got too close, they got after me, got into my flaming red hair. My Dad chased me down and picked them out of my hair. The flying squirrel and the adder snake at the cucumber patch. Clearing the land of scrub timber for a penny each. Of the mules we borrowed from Ancel Fairbanks the first year on the farm, Nig and Blue. We planted sorghum and made molasses, with a mule pulling the grist? what ever you call it. The milk cow who would not allow a man to milk her. Guernsey, gave the creamiest milk I ever saw. Loved to wake up in the morning and break the ice off the milk and drink it. (that’s inside the house, too) We would heat flat irons on the old wood stove, wrap them in newspapers and put them under the covers, at the foot of the bed. Spent many nights, unwrapping them with my toes. How the creek rose and my uncle swung across, “Tarzan style”, lost his knife, in the creek, searched for it, could not find it, Got so angry he threw the scabbard in, when the water went down he found the knife, but the water had carried the scabbard away. How Grandmother Strickland sold eggs at Holdenville, then took me to the drug store, ordered a pint of Black Walnut ice cream, which was served, in the carton, cut in half and placed on a saucer. How my Dad would let me ride astride the lights on the old Model A Ford all the way to Calvin at 40 miles an hour. What a rush!! How my Dad jacked the back wheel of the Ford off the ground, attached a belt and pulley to same and cut wood. Which we packed into the back (seat taken out) of the car and delivered to folks. One person we delivered to was Mrs. Gofourth, across from the gas station-store, that had the sign “TURN IN AT TURNERS AND FILL UP WITH PHILLIPS.” Mrs. Gofourth had one bad leg. She used an old cane bottom chair to get around. It was cold winter time when we delivered to her, and she had her quilt racks up, and chickens were roosting on them. :) Lou Anne Allen, Attended Moss Schools from the 3rd. - 6th. Grades. Those attending were (standing left to right) Margie Mairel, Joyce Yates, Lynn Marquis, Naomi Tomlinson, Sharon Dilday and Shirley Harkey. (seated) Wynema Morrow, Randa Phillips and Phyllis Brantley. Red Hat Ladies Visit Blondie’s Truck Stop Blondie’s? Where is Blondie’s?? It is at Horn Corner and it is the neatest little sandwich shop in town...Horn Town that is! Nine Red Hat Ladies had their monthly meeting there and as you may know, we always go where there is food! And there was plenty of it! I think that everyone ordered something different and it was all very good! After Naomi blessed our food, we all began to chow down! Then she and Randa began the games. With Easter just around the corner, Randa had brought plastic Easter eggs with not only candy in them, but a Title that you could either draw or act out. Shirley got so excited trying to explain her drawing of “Pot of gold at the end of the rainbow” that she knocked over her water. What was in your water, Shirley? That only added to more laughter!! Naomi won for her version of a “Leprechaun” and Shirley placed 2nd. We drew for Naomi’s gift which she had brought and was won by Wynema. It was a cute statute of a Victorian woman. Shirley added to our gifts with homemade chocolate chip cookies! Outstanding! What better way to spend a Saturday than with good food, friends and lots of laughter! Those attending were Margie Mairel, Joyce Yates, Lynn Marquis, Naomi Tomlinson, Sharon Dilday, Shirley Harkey, Wynema Morrow, Randa Phillips and Phyllis Brantley. We missed the rest of our group especially Sue Wood with her kazoo. We didn’t dare try to sing since we didn’t have her kazoo there to accompany us. That might have been a big disaster! Oh, well! Tomorrow is another day. Or should I say, we will try it again next month when we meet at Sharon Dilday’s house. Mr. Wendell has agreed to cook hamburgers for us! Yum! Yum! This is a great picture and I wanted to share it with you this week. I’m not completely sure, but I think Carroll learned a lot about aviation from this special friend of his. Thanks for sharing, Carroll!! —DD— We had a nice visit with our good friend Fred Vines this past Friday. He was in town visiting and stopped by for a chat. He said he really enjoyed the article by Johnnie Wingo that we featured recently. He said he went to school with Johnnie’s sisters, but Johnnie was younger than he. When Fred read the article he said he could see everything she described in his mind. We always enjoy visiting with you Fred. Thanks for stopping by! —DD— My mother, Beth Leewright called to give me a couple of corrections on my column last week. First of all, Alta Wyrick was not C.C. Johnson’s daughter, she was his daughter-in-law. I guess Bill and I have always thought of her as his daughter. Second, pastoring was misspelled and the reason for this is Microsoft Word changes this word every time it is typed. I guess pastoring is not a word in the Microsoft Word dictionary and when I get smart enough to know how to add it, I’m going to do that!! Thank you, Mother!! —DD— Happy Birthday to two special friends, Dusty and Deana Irons, who celebrated their birthdays on Tuesday, March 19th. Hope you had a wonderful day!! —DD— We received an email from our good friend John Pannell with a great story about Cousin Carl. I laughed until I almost cried when I read it, but I’m sure at the time John wasn’t laughing at all. Dear Bill and Dayna, Your Cousin Carl article brought back several good memories. During the time Bill Anderson was in Holdenville I worked at the Hudson Funeral Home. Often when Jim and Jean Phillips were gone for the evening I would stay in the office to greet visitors until around 10:00 PM. One evening while there I was in the back for some reason and I heard the bell, indicating that someone had came in the front door. I hurried up to the front ready to greet a visitor and there was no one in sight. I heard a noise behind me and turned to see, in the shadows, a rather tall lady, in high heels, a full length coat and a scarf around her head and tied at the chin. I’m sure I almost left my skin at that moment. The lady stepped out of the shadows and tells me a story of how her father had passed away in some town in Arkansas and how she needed Continued on Page B-3 LEGAL NOTICE IN THE DISTRICT COURT OF HUGHES COUNTY STATE OF OKLAHOMA Case No. FB-2013-001 IN THE MATTER OF THE APPROVAL OF OIL AND GAS LEASE BY RESTRICTED INDIAN HEIR OF LONNIE MCGIRT, FULL BLOOD CREEK INDIAN, ROLL NO. 7284, Five Wes Watkins Technology Center students in the Architecture/Construction and Service Careers/Carpentry career majors were selected to receive OKLAHOMA STATE HOME BUILDERS ASSOCIATION SCHOLARSHIPS for the spring 2013 semester. LPXLP HOLDENVILLE TRIBUNE—MARCH 20, 2013—PAGE B-3 from Dayna’s Desk Continued from Page B-2 to get him to Holdenville and how she didn’t have the money and what was she going to do. She tried, on several occasions, to hug me and I skillfully avoided her. During this whole story, I tried to tell her that I needed to call Mr. Phillips and he would have the answers she needed. The lady wouldn’t let me get close to the phone as she would either grab me or step in the way or try to show me some paper she had. This went on for about 20 minutes until Mr. Phillips came into the front door of the funeral home. He had a big smile on his face and tried to keep the farce going but he couldn’t help laughing. The tall lady of course was Bill Anderson, dressed in drag. After I went though several emotions I did see the humor in the situation. Bill Anderson had a great sense of humor, as did Jim Phillips. Maybe I was an easy target too. John Pannell —0— We also received a note last Wednesday, March 13, from LaVerne Mackey Barnes that I wanted to share with you. Dear HHS Classmates, I spoke with Janette Hughes this morning and was told that Neal passed away last night. If you would like to send her a card the address is Janette Hughes 4801 N. Hills Blvd Apt # 606 North Little Rock,Arkansas 72116 Also Bert Frederick’s wife is in the hospital, so please remember her in your prayers. Thank you LaVerne Mackey Barnes Note: LaVerne has been having some health problems and recently had a pacemaker implanted. She is doing well, but please keep her in your prayers. —0— It was good to hear from 1955 HHS graduate Bill Bryan. He identified more of the names on our mystery photo and I wanted to share them with you. Between David Dossett and him we have most of the names. Your Mystery Photo is, I think, my 3rd grade class at Central School. Here are the names I remember: Bottom row(from left): Bobby Auten, Fred Fehney(Snyder), David Dossett, Pat Cotton, Norma Jo Dishnan Row 2: Robert Throtmorten, Mary Funk(I think), Janice Sanders(Ithink), Lyn Maddox, Sarah Howell, Bill Bryan(Me), ?? Row 3: ??, Roger Sweeney, ??, Mary Dell Pound, Barbara Gordon, Suzanne Bartlett, ?? Top Row: ??, ??, ??, teacher Willie Belle Adams, Twila Marsh, Peggy Phillips, Johnny Lee Bryne I think the picture was taken in 1946 or ’47. I am pretty sure of the first row. Bobby Auten was an All State tackle from Ada, now retired coach in the Dallas area. Tommy Ball retired from the Navy, and died several years ago. David Dossett was in the Air Force. Pat Cotton retired in California. I have met Bobby Throtmorten’s cousin here in Oregon. Sarah Howell is in Houston, and I am next to her. Roger Sweeney is in your area somewhere. While in the Navy, I followed his chalk written signs all over the Western Pacific saying “Roger Sweeney was here” but I never caught up with him. Mary Dell Pound is in Moore. Barbara Gorden in Norman, Suzanne Bartlett is in the Denver area and Peggy Phillips is in OKC or Washington D.C. The only names I am not sure of are Mary Funk, Janice Sanders, Twila Marsh and Johnny Lee Bruner. I know Barbara Gordon is in Holdenville a lot and you know her. I would bet she can name them all Bill Bryan, Eugene Oregon, HHS Class of 1955 “Go Ducks”!!!!!!!!!!!!!! —0— I received an email from Len Pruitt, HHS class of ’59. He tells an incredible story about a hayride he was on that almost became a major tragedy. Thanks for sharing, Len! Hi Bill and Dayna, Another story from the list of girls names in the 4-H group for the year was 1951. I had mentioned the Jones brothers and the Moline tractors. Marquitta Jones has a cousin Ruby Jones that was a HHS graduate 1958. I think Marquitta graduated from Wewoka in 1959 I am not sure. The last time I saw her she was older, still pretty, a cheer leader and probably wouldn’t have remembered me. I used to go to their houses with my dad when I was a little guy. The Jones brothers had good mink dogs, my dad also did, mostly blue tick hounds. They hunted mink in the winter season, farmed in the summer. This was during world war two. I think they made more hunting mink than farming. The pelts sold for a lot of money. Some days they would make several hundred dollars hunting. A days pay for most jobs was about four dollars per day. This is my connection to the Jones’ but not the story. The story is about a party and hay ride at Ruby Jones house. Ruby attended Yeager and invited my sister Debbie and me and probably twenty five or so other kids from Yeager to attend. I know all the other kids from other schools would have yard parties and hayrides. This one was different. This was the mother of all hayrides! We started out, Ruby driving the tractor, the hay wagon loaded with kids sitting on bales of hay. We were singing and laughing and having the best time and Ruby was driving us along, singing and laughing with us. We came to a steep downhill grade and Ruby forgot to stop and gear the tractor down and over the hill we went. Ruby took the tractor out gear and tried to gear it down and she couldn’t. Then she got on the left brake and the rear tire just slid, allowing the right tire to get ahead and pull the tractor sideways and allow the wagons left front to come forward and almost get up on top of the left rear tire. Ruby looked back and saw what was about to happen and got off of the brake and we straightened out but we were going faster by the second. She tried again, same result, rear tire slid, wagon came forward to almost jack knife,Ruby looked back and again got off the brake. One of the older boys walked the wagon tongue and got behind Ruby and told her, our only hope is to ride it out and that we did.I have never held my sister so tight and prayed so hard. All of the kids on that wagon stayed on, If any one had decided to jump off and land on that rocky road at that speed, would have been killed or badly injured. By staying on we ran the risk of the wagon getting up on top of the rear tire and flipping the tractor, pulling the wagon over the top of the tractor and all of us rolling down the rocky hill together. To this day I can’t name one Yeager kid on that hayride except my sister Debbie and Ruby Jones. I don’t remember who walked the wagon tongue and stood behind Ruby but I remember them giving her directions.I do remember my prayer. I said Lord help us, Lord help us all and I repeated my self until we came to a safe stop. I have heard the phrase. There are no Athiests in a mine field. I know I can safely say Town & Country Auto Inc. there were absolutely no Athiests on Ruby’s hay ride. Thanks to her good driving and cool head she avoided an absolute disaster. Oh !!and the boy that stood behind her and told her to not try and stop the tractor to let it roll. I dont know if our prayers were answered that night or if God helped Ruby do the right things to save us all. I do know everyone did the right thing. I just don’t remember their names.
