SWIMMING: Boldmere
Swimming Club produced 21
personal bests and three new
club records in the 45th
National Arena League Cup

The Orcas finished last of the

champions – confirmed their top
ten status in England.
The other clubs taking part
were Plymouth Leander,
Stockport Metro, City of Leeds,
Guilford, Hatfield, City of
Peterborough, City of Salford,

Between them they boasted

reigning Olympic women’s
100m breaststroke champion
Ruta Meilutyte.
Bradley Lynch was the highest
point scorer for Boldmere with a
second-place finish in the open
100m freestyle behind Ben
Proud, recently picked to

third spot, followed by touching
in fifth place in the 100m fly.
In the 15/u 100m free, Ben
Stanford placed fourth, as did

THIS
summer’s
Youth
Olympic Games could be a preview for the future – and
Sutton Coldfield judoka Lulu
Piovesana intends to make a
mark on her peers.
The 17-year-old (pictured)
is a rising star in her chosen
sport after picking up a bronze
medal in the under-63kg category at the Cadet World
Championships in Miami last
year.
NETBALL: Little Sutton
Primary School have
netted some fantastic
successes on the
netball court recently.
The Year 6 purple team
won the Arthur Terry
cluster tournament,
while the yellow team
came third, having been
knocked out in the
semi-final by the purple
team.
The following day, the
year 5 team won the
Sutton Schools
tournament and the
year 6 side did the
same the following
week. Lots of the girls
attend training sessions
run by Little Sutton

to be held at The
Now she is aiming to raise
the bar by fighting her way
onto the podium at the second
edition of the Youth Olympics
in Nanjing in August.
And buoyed by her 2013 success, the Sutton Coldfield
Grammar School for Girls pupil is adamant she can still
perform when the going gets
tougher at under-19 level.
“Getting a bronze medal at
the Cadet World Championships in Miami last year is the
biggest thing I’ve done,” said
Aston Villa Football Club
Saturday morning from
9.30am-12.30pm and is
open to key stage 2
girls regardless of which
school they attend.

Piovesana.
“We had to qualify but I
don’t even know how I managed to do it and there was no
pressure on anyone from the
British team as no-one really
expected us to do it.
“It might be a bit too early
for the Commonwealth Games
this year but I’m hopefully going to the Youth Olympics in
China in August, so that’s my
main event of the year.
“I would like to do better but
to even get a bronze in that
would be a big achievement,
it’s almost as big as the
Olympics but for my age group
which is under-19s, so to even
be there would be great.”
Piovesana can look to fellow
Brit Jade Jones for inspiration
should she fight in Nanjing –
the taekwondo player winning
gold at the inaugural Youth
Olympics in 2010 and then
London 2012.
Closer to home Gemma Gibbons and Karina Bryant won
silver and bronze respectively
at the Olympics in 2012 and –
almost two years on – Piovesana is still feeling the effect of
their success.
“Since 2012 British judo has
really improved, especially juniors now. We’ve never had
gold in the Olympics so hopefully it can be me one day,” she
added.
