Cheers to Organizers of “Catch the Spirit”
Hats off to the 2011 “Catch the
Spirit” committee from The Col.
Edward Jessup Branch in
Brockville, Ontario. The
conference was indeed a great
celebration of our Loyalist Roots
jam packed with interesting tours
and activities. Our Manitoba
contingent consisted of nine and
from all reports each and every
one of the attendees made the
most of the event, meeting new
UELAC friends, renewing old
acquaintances, learning the
history of the region or pursuing
family research.
During the opening reception held
at the Brockville Rowing Club, our
group invited everyone to attend
the 2012 Conference hosted by
our Manitoba Branch by
performing a rousing ballad to the
tune of ”Red River Valley”.
Unfortunately, we did not have an
opportunity to practice prior to the
performance but the audience
was kind and applauded our
efforts!
2012 Invitation Lyrics
To this valley we hope you are
coming
We will welcome you in true
Prairie style
For they say Loyalists at Hotel
Fort Garry
Will be a conference very
worthwhile.
Our big skies and vast prairie
vistas
Are well known across this great
land,
But we also have a desert and
forests
and many lakes with lovely white
sand.
From the East and the West
you’ll be coming
You will love our great sites and
kind smiles
We will swat huge mosquitoes
for you
And laugh with you all the while.
From your room you will soon be
agazing
At the Forks and the rivers that
meet
The Conference will be so amazing
You will want to stay for a week!
Come and tour at the lower Fort
Garry
Under skies of deep azure blue
And remember the Red River
Settlers
Some of whom were Loyalists
too.
Conference at the Confluence will
be so engaging
We will welcome friends both old
and new
And we hope all the plans we have
hewn
Are enough to entice you next
June.

Broken Trail
By author
Jean Rae Baxter
In a forest clearing north of Lake
Ontario, twelve-year-old Broken Trail
waits anxiously for the vision that will
reveal his path through life. Knowing that
he is white by birth and an Oneida only
through adoption, he fears lest the
Spirits deny him the mystic dream that is
independence. In the aftermath of the
British and Loyalist forces’ defeat at
King’s Mountain, South Carolina, he finds
the brother he had tried to forget.
