ABOUT CHICAGO JAZZ PHILHARMONIC
VIS
ORBERT DA
Chicago Jazz Philharmonic was formed ten years ago, when Orbert Davis was asked to
headline the Chicago Jazz Festival and encouraged to “think big”. Today, CJP is a multifaceted performing arts organization. In ensembles ranging from the full 60-piece orchestra
to the double quartet, Chicago Jazz Philharmonic performs a wide repertoire combining
jazz and classical idioms in original arrangements and world premieres. This exciting
musical experience bridges gaps in both genres and others in between. In addition to its
renowned orchestra, with its acclaimed compositions and performances, CJP also devotes a
major portion of its resources to providing music education and enrichment in the inner city.

LECTURES BY GRANNIES ON SAFARI
ABOUT GRANNIES ON SAFARI
Two best friends – Regina Fraser, a marketing executive retiring from a 31-year career with
an international airline, and Pat Johnson, an arts executive who worked with organizations
and artists across the globe - combine their passion for travel, culture and connecting with
people in distant lands to create Grannies on Safari®, an Emmy® award winning TV series.
SLAVE ART:
Pat Johnson, co-host of the Grannies on Safari and former Executive Director of Museum of
the African Diaspora in San Francisco, will discuss creative ways that plantation slaves used
natural materials, including plants, vegetable fibers, and cotton to make a variety of crafts and
paintings that were shared among their group, and sometimes slave masters took them inside
the plantation house for display. I will share slides and photos of these items and hopefully
some antique examples.
COOKING IN THE ANTEBELLUM SOUTH:
Regina Fraser, marketing executive and co-host of the Grannies on Safari syndicated travel
series, will share common recipes and menus prepared in the regional areas the American
Queen travels through on this journey. Consideration will be given to the similarities of food
items available to masters of the plantation and the slaves who prepared the meals. Old recipes
will be shared and a handout with several of them will be made available to the attendees.
