Kings Place Festival 2013
Friday 13 – Sunday 15 September
We are delighted to announce an outstanding programme
for the sixth Kings Place Festival. Every year more and more
people experience our unique offering of over 100 concerts
spread over one long weekend – it’s a great way to sample
the huge variety of music and events we have to offer.
With more free shows than ever before (over a third of the
whole programme, in fact), the Kings Place atrium will be abuzz,
resonating with jazz, contemporary, folk and world music on
the foyer stages. There are plenty of family events too, ranging
from art, cake decorating and ukuleles to Debussy, Alice
in Wonderland and sing-alongs. And when you feel peckish
Rotunda and Green & Fortune will pamper your discerning
palate with chocolate, wine and beer tastings throughout
the weekend.
Kings Place residents Aurora orchestra and the Brodsky
Quartet, plus the london Sinfonietta and orchestra of the
Age of enlightenment, showcase punchy classical and
contemporary programmes. Add folk, jazz, comedy, world and
spoken word events from the likes of Martin Simpson, Dave
Stapleton, Robert Newman, the Nicolas Meier Trio+ and
Tom Service and you have the amazing eclectic mix that is
unique to Kings Place.
All tickets are just £4.50 online. Clear your diary and come
along for the richest of cultural smorgasbords – all happening
this September in London’s hottest music and arts venue!
We look forward to welcoming you and your family.
Peter Millican, ceo Kings Place

Oddarrang make a genre-defying
sound, influenced by jazz, classical,

They have been compared to the
cool but moving expression of
Icelanders like Björk and Sigur Rós

soundscape. Oddarrang’s debut
album won the Finnish equivalent of

Tom Service convenes a panel of
composers, thinkers, performers
and programmers to get to the heart
of new-music’s opportunities and
identities in our lives. Right now
composers are rethinking how their
music is heard, where it’s played
and in what ways it reaches out to
the world. The question is, have the
institutions, the critics and the rest
of musical culture caught up with
them? Join the debate – and you too
can shape the future of music!

Slowly Rolling Camera is a new
project that teams pianist-composer
Dave Stapleton, producer Deri
Roberts, vocalist-lyricist Dionne
Bennett and drummer Elliot
Bennett. It is proof positive that
some of the most interesting work
arises from a meeting of many
minds. The result is music that has
distinct echoes of the ‘invisible
soundtracks’ of UK progressives
The Cinematic Orchestra and 4hero
as well as the polychrome textures
of maverick Scandinavian artists
like Sigur Rós. Slowly Rolling
Camera are purveyors of mysterious
audio vignettes, moulded by a
structural sophistication plugged
straight into the vibrant emotional
current of pop culture.

The string Quartet That rocks
46
Stephanie, Kirsty, Natalie and
Rachael became Raven over a pizza
in Soho. Recent graduates from
the UK’s leading conservatoires,
they were making their livings as
freelance session players, but were
disillusioned with the traditional
background role of the string quartet
and frustrated with the same tired
repertoire. The girls wanted to
reinterpret popular tunes of all ages
and revolutionise the way they are
performed. Only weeks after the
quartet had formed, inspired by
Nigel Kennedy’s maverick attitude
Natalie fused two of Vivaldi’s Four
Seasons in an original arrangement.
Chairs and music stands were

Kirsty mangan violin

abandoned and weeks later, it was
performed at a ‘Non-Classical’ club
night to an astonished crowd. They
haven’t looked back.
The girls write all their own
arrangements. Live, Brahms sits
comfortably next to Queens of the
Stone Age and Dave Brubeck is an
easy fit next to Motorhead. In any
given week, Raven members can be
found performing Mozart in St John’s
Smith’s Square, backing an artist on a
TV show or recording at Abbey Road
on a film session. However, the girls
are happiest together, reinventing
everything from Dvořák to Dubstep
and performing it with their unique
energy and passion.

Peter Millican is a property

and a desire to incorporate art into

In 1940, Olivier Messiaen was

he met fellow musical inmates –

written for the ensemble under

A work which opposes transcendent
beauty with moments of complete

Tempest present a varied
programme, from Baroque to jazz

set out to prove that a three-flute

Tempest start out with their own

Copland Two Pieces

Dvořák String Quartet, Op. 96 American

The Two Pieces for string quartet by
Copland are neglected novelties,
but that doesn’t detract from their
charm. The second is a quirky,
dancey, fugue-like affair with a
ghostly central section. The first
is a masterful snapshot of a vast
American landscape.
The emotional heart of Barber’s
solitary quartet lies in the timeless Molto
adagio, known the world over in the
string orchestra version as the ‘Barber
Adagio’. Barber was an accomplished
singer and this heartbreaking
movement is pure choral music. The
first movement is extremely passionate,
and after the slow movement, the
piece ends with a shake of the fist!
Where does Dvořák’s Op.96 fit
into all this? The nickname is a
bit of a giveaway. Right from the
wonderfully carefree opening,
it’s amazingly American, and that
touching second subject seems
to embody the very essence of
‘frontier’. The second movement
is a simple but moving Negro
spiritual. The annoying bird said
to have inspired the scherzo is
ingeniously captured in little
motifs and by moving the entire
thing one beat to the left. The
last movement is surely one
of the most uplifting of all
finales, a real Hollywood-style
‘happy ending’.

This concert invites you to
explore the extraordinary set of
experimental compositions devised
by American composer James
Tenney, set alongside some of the
quiet and still music of Morton
Feldman. Tenney’s Postal Pieces
(created between 1965 and 1971)
are short works, written and sent
on postcards, often for his friends
at the Californian Institute of
the Arts. The pieces require the
musicians to interpret a short set of
instructions or a minimal amount
of printed notation, with hugely
atmospheric, and sometimes hugely
dramatic results. Morton Feldman
wrote four versions of The Viola
in my Life, exploring the sound of
the instrument in partnership with
different instrumental forces. This
version is for viola and piano, and
like the others explores extreme
quiet and the silence between
the notes. His Four Instruments
utilises his compositional technique
whereby the players begin together
but then proceed at their own pace.
His set of Last Pieces are beautiful
miniatures for piano.
