The best of Portugal & Spain 2015 Day 1 – Arrival Day Welcome to Lisbon! Meet your private chauffeur outside of customs and head towards Sintra, we’ll be making a couple of stops. The first stop will be a private visit to the 18th century Queluz Palace, one of the last great Rococo buildings to be designed in Europe. We’ll follow that with coffee at Cascais Albatroz Hotel. Today’s lunch will be by the sea, at a lovely fishermen village. During the afternoon, we’ll enjoy a private guided tour to Sintra, deemed a World Heritage Centre by UNESCO, with a private visit to Moorish Castle and Pena Palace, a major expression of 19th century Romanticism. Return to Lisbon. Dinner at leisure and overnight at your hotel. Indulge in a private visit, followed by a lectured wine tasting. Next stop is the Esporão Wine Estate where we’ll be treated to an olive oil tasting and gourmet lunch. Afterwards, there will be a bit of time to relax and enjoy the views from the estate terrace facing the Alentejo plains. This afternoon we’ll have a private guided visit to the estate wine cellars, followed by a lectured wine tasting, before heading back to your hotel. We’ll make a stop for a tapas lunch in Vila Nova de Gaia served at local Regional Restaurant. After lunch, there will be a private visit to one of our preferred wine cellars, followed by a lectured wine tasting. Upon arriving at tonight’s hotel, we’ll have some time to settle in before dinner. Dinner at leisure and overnight at your hotel. Day 4 – Douro Valley This morning we hit the road towards Douro Valley wine region. Our first stop will be at a familiar wine estate referred by Wine Spectator, where we’ll be hosted by the owner for a lectured wine tasting. Then we’ll drive towards a second local wine estate, where we’ll enjoy some lunch at the estate restaurant. Afterwards, there will be a private visit to wine cellars, followed by lectured wine tasting. This afternoon holds a special treat, as we take a private river cruise aboard a typical Rabelo boat with snacks and wines aboard, assisted by a local passionate guide. There we’ll visit a winery producing alvariño white wine. We’ll visit the estate bakery, where we will have a chance to make our very own bread. We’ll visit the seafood fisherman and a seafood factory. If weather permits, we might even fish with. The afternoon includes another stop to a white wine winery, before finishing our journey to Santiago. We’ll settle in at the hotel before dinner. Dinner at leisure and overnight at your hotel. Day 7 – Coruña & Vivero Drive to La Coruña, visit the small villages of Rias Altas. Explore the town and then continue to Vivero. Perhaps take in a bit of a walk along the famous Cathedrals beach. Your guide will help you in your search for your heritage with a visit to the town hall, the church, as well as a tour of the village and surroundings. There may be a chance to meet some of the locals as well. We’ll stay here for lunch before continuing on to the hotel in Cacabelos. Dinner at leisure and overnight at your hotel. Next, we’ll visit Ponferrada, where we will stop in to visit the Templar castle, which covers approximately 16,000 square meters. In 1178, Ferdinand II of León donated the city to the Templar order for protecting the pilgrims on the Way of St. James who passed through El Bierzo in their road to Santiago de Compostela. We’ll stay here for lunch, followed by a tour and tasting at a winery in the El Bierzo region. Dinner at leisure and overnight at your hotel. Day 10 – Leon & Oviedo This morning we’ll visit the town of Astorga to visit its cathedral and the Episcopal Palace designed by Gaudi. We’ll start the day off right with some of the famous mantecados de Astorga (sweet cakes) alongside some coffee in the main square. Next we’ll take a quick drive to Leon where we’ll try a few tapas in the famous old part or Barrio Humedo. After lunch, we’ll visit the Gothic cathedral, one of the best in Spain. As capital of the kingdom in the Middle Ages, Leon played an important role during the Reconquest of Spain from the Moors. Gaudí also left his mark on the city when he was commissioned to design the Casa de los Botines, now a bank. After taking in some of this history, we’ll head to the square where the Parador of San Marcos, one of the most beautiful Renaissance buildings in Spain, is located. There are many rooms filled with paintings, carvings, and tapestries to explore. We’ll begin with a visit to an authentic cheese market in Cangas de Onis. Located on Calle del Mercado, in the center of the historical town across from Santa Maria Church, this market takes place on Sunday mornings and it is probably the best cheese market in Spain. Our appetites appropriately stimulated, we’ll enjoy a traditional lunch in Cangas. If there weather agrees, there is an option to go on a 2 hour canoe trip on the Sella River – a perfect setting with picturesque scenery and ideal water conditions. All sessions are individually tailored to ensure everyone has an enjoyable and constructive time on the water, regardless of experience level. After lunch, we’ll visit the Covadonga Lakes, an extraordinary place steeped in legend, in the heart of the oldest National Park in Spain. Here we’ll have the option of a light hike along beautiful, twisty roads revealing a beautiful countryside of unimaginable green carpets and mountain peaks, which all seem to be within reach. Day 12 – Nates, Bilbao, & San Sebastian This morning we’ll travel to Nates, where we’ll spend some time exploring the town, and investigating more of your Spanish heritage, with stops at the town hall and church. Lunch in Nates. Continue on drive to San Sebastian. Dinner at leisure and overnight at your hotel. Optional stop in the fishing town of Getaria. Visit the Aquarium, and enjoy a tapas lunch in San Sebastian. If available, a Pelota Match may also be part of today’s agenda. OPTION II – Pile in the car to visit the French Basque coast: Biarritz, Saint Jean de Luz, and the medieval town of Hondarribia. Stroll through the walled medieval village crowned by an imposing 10th century fortress offering beautiful views of France across the Bidasoa River. Regardless of how we spend the day, the evening will involve dinner reservations at one of either renowned restaurants Arzak or Akelaŕe, before retiring to the hotel. Dinner at leisure and overnight at your hotel. Day 14 – Navarra This morning we head to Pamplona, the city that Hemingway made famous for the running of the bulls. After strolling along the streets and taking in the sights, we’ll depart for the medieval town of Olite. Here, we’ll visit the Palace of the Kings of Navarre of Olite (also known as the Royal Palace of Olite), a courtly and military character building built during the 13th and 14th centuries, now a Parador. We’ll stay here for lunch before embarking on a scenic drive to Rioja. We’ll be sure to stop at the legendary fountain of wine in the Irache winery, a renowned destination along the historic pilgrim's route. The fountain has two faucets: one of water and the other of wine. We’ll stay for a tour of the winery. Tonight we settle in to a new hotel. We’ll have lunch at one of the wineries. This afternoon we’ll embark on a special wine experience: from vine to bottle. The occupation of viticulture and winegrowing, introduced by the Romans in the 1st century A.D. and transmitted from fathers to sons during generations, has shaped the habits, traditions, and lifestyle of the people of the region – an experience we can take part in. We’ll begin with a pleasant walk through the vineyards as we learn about the orientation /guiding of the vines, the layout of the land, and the importance of the soil – including a hands-on activity. Then we’ll head to the winery, where we will carry out different experiments in order to understand the fermentation of wine and winemaking in general. We’ll descend into the 16th century cellar, dug in natural stone, where we will taste wine directly from the barrels (with the appropriate explanations). Finally, each member of the group will bottle his/her own bottle of wine. Before the end of the day we’ll be sure to visit at least one of the small towns of Rioja. Options include: – Medieval walled village of Laguardia (13th century). Under the stone paved streets and homes of Laguardia is a network of subterranean bodegas. On street level there are many historic monuments and sites, like the Gothic facade of Santa Maria de los Reyes church from the 14th century. – Santo Domingo de la Calzada, a small medieval town important for the pilgrims in their way to Santiago. A stroll through the arcade streets to admire the stone mansions with their coats of arms is a must. – Medieval village of Briones or Labastida After a full day, we’ll head back to the hotel for dinner. Upon arrival, we will check in to our hotel, and spend some time getting settled. In the early evening, our guide will pick us up for a guided walking tour of the Gothic Quarter. We’ll wander through the city’s narrow, winding streets to destinations including Cathedral Square, St. Jaume square, the royal centre, and Rei square. Dinner this evening is a choice between traditional tapas or dinner reservations. Dinner at leisure and overnight at your hotel. Day 17 – Barcelona Tour Our guide will pick us up after breakfast to introduce you to artistic side of Barcelona. We’ll learn of the importance of Les Rambles and Passeig de Gràcia, where some of the most important modernist façades are situated, including la Pedrera and la Casa Batlló of Gaudí. Particularly special are the façades and symbolism of the Sagrada Família. We’ll also visit Parc Guell, the neighborhood created by Gaudi. Lunch by the sea will follow. In case of cancellation of a booking, the customer must inform Into the Vineyard by a recorded delivery letter with acknowledgement of receipt, as early as possible. Into the Vineyard reserves the right to adjust the trip price based on market currency fluctuations, any variation in the currency exchange between currency of payment and currency of country(s) of travel posted by the Federal Reserve of America that is in excess of 3% at time of final payment can be added to the cost of the trip at time of final payment. To guarantee the aforementioned quoted price you retain the option to pay the full amount at your discretion. As far as possible, Into the Vineyard will satisfy amendment requests. If these requests concern an extension of the stay, an increased number of persons, or the purchase of additional services, these amendments will be charged in addition to the original price. For any other amendment, a fee per person will be charged. Some international and in-country or regional airfares have advance purchase and ticketing requirements which will be communicated at time of reservation. Additional payment to cover the costs of the airline tickets will be requested in order to issue the tickets. Airline tickets carry penalties as per rules of the fare. Penalties are also imposed for any changes to the air reservations made after ticketing. We reserve the right to request additional deposits if required by hotels and suppliers. The complaint must describe the grievance and be made within 24 hours. If you have not obtained satisfaction, please send your complaint through registered mail, and join all written evidence within 15 days after the end of your trip. The length of our investigation will determine the delay in our response to your complaint. Into the Vineyard shall not be held liable for any inconvenience due to Loss/theft of plane tickets at the customs or check-in, non-presentation, or presentation of documents (ID card, passport, visa, vaccination certificate, etc.) which have expired or have an insufficient period of validity or do not conform to the indications on the back. In case of a failed check-in, there will be no refund of the package fare. Unexpected incidents due to a third party: wars, political upheavals, strikes external to Into The Vineyard, technical hitches external to Into The Vineyard, congestions on the roads or in the air space, hijacking, bankrupt of a service provider, bad weather, delays, engine failures, thefts of luggage or other goods. No refund of any kind will be made because of delays and itinerary changes due to the incidents mentioned above – e.g. change in the length of the tour initially planned or of a connection. Possible additional expenses (taxes, hotel, parking) will be payable by the customer. Cancellations imposed by circumstances of the greatest importance and/or linked to the customer’s safety, and/or on the command of an enforcing authority. Into The Vineyard reserves the right to modify planned dates/times/itineraries if the customer’s safety cannot be ensured. The customer cannot claim any refund. Services that will not be used (transfers and excursions) will not be refunded. Services that are voluntarily modified on the spot are subject to our service providers’ conditions: additional services that entail an extra cost will have to be paid directly by the customer and will not entail Into the Vineyard liability. UNFORSEEN CIRCUMSTANCES Trip costs do not include items not specified in the itinerary. Although Into the Vineyard will make every effort to adhere to this itinerary, on rare occasions it may be necessary to make an adjustment to these arrangements. Should such adjustment be necessary, a substitute will be offered when and where possible.
