their founders; the other, a more modern example designed by a renowned architect, using
advanced winemaking technologies. We’ll have lunch at one of the wineries.
This afternoon we’ll embark on a special wine experience: from vine to bottle. The occupation of
viticulture and winegrowing, introduced by the Romans in the 1st century A.D. and transmitted from
fathers to sons during generations, has shaped the habits, traditions, and lifestyle of the people of
the region – an experience we can take part in. We’ll begin with a pleasant walk through the
vineyards as we learn about the orientation /guiding of the vines, the layout of the land, and the
importance of the soil – including a hands-on activity.
Then we’ll head to the winery, where we will carry out different experiments in order to understand
the fermentation of wine and winemaking in general. We’ll descend into the 16th century cellar, dug
in natural stone, where we will taste wine directly from the barrels (with the appropriate
explanations). Finally, each member of the group will bottle his/her own bottle of wine.
Before the end of the day we’ll be sure to visit at least one of the small towns of Rioja. Options
include:
– Medieval walled village of Laguardia (13th century). Under the stone paved streets and
homes of Laguardia is a network of subterranean bodegas. On street level there are many
historic monuments and sites, like the Gothic facade of Santa Maria de los Reyes church from
the 14th century.
– Santo Domingo de la Calzada, a small medieval town important for the pilgrims in their way
to Santiago. A stroll through the arcade streets to admire the stone mansions with their coats
of arms is a must.
– Medieval village of Briones or Labastida
