What’s New for 2015 - 2016
Camp Improvements & our Scout Executive
Ski Kyle Mountain!
Our Scout Executive, John Coyle, is committed to improving our
camp facilities and programs. John has attended Roundtables,
camps, events, & forums throughout the Longhorn Council to hear
the views of Scouters so that their suggestions and concerns may
be addressed. Upgrading and adding summer camp bathrooms and
showers is one of our top facilities priority. Our projects include the
campsite latrine privacy upgrade project, new tents for all camps, and
professional boat overhauls, and much more (see the many projects
listed below). Be sure to watch as we continue to push hard to
improve our camps and facilities over the next few years.

Chisholm Trail Adventure
Chisholm Trail is a unique and unforgettable high adventure
for older youth and adults. Your crew gets a pontoon boat
for a week to travel to the high adventure outposts and watersports bases on our camp’s 16 miles of Lake Bridgeport
shoreline.
Chisholm Trail participants spend every afternoon doing
watersports and then all evening and the following morning
at a high adventure outpost . Outposts are U.S. Cavalry, Texas
Rangers, Vikings, Fast Draw, Covert Ops, Area 51, Climbing,
ATVs, Sporting Clays, & Comanche Village.
Boy Scout Troops, Venture Crews, and other groups from
44 states, England, Scotland, and Mexico have come to
Chisholm Trail. It’s the flagship program of our Texas High
Adventure Base and offers world-class living history and
outstanding high adventure! Your crew is certain to have an
outstanding experience.
We are 71 miles from DFW airport. Pontoon boats, gas, food,
and ice are included in the Chisholm Trail fee.

Texas Ranger Outpost
▼ Texas Rangers fire a volley in a battle with frontier outlaws.
Learn frontier history by living it! Experience the life of a volunteer Ranger on the Texas frontier. It’s 1842 and the Griffin Ranch
has been robbed. The call has gone out to the local Texas Ranger
volunteer company. That means you! Our Texas Ranger Captain
will muster you into our Frontier Company, serve you frontier
meals, and train you to fire the legendary .50 caliber frontier rifle.
Patrols have spotted the enemy, and “we’ll have a fight on our hands,
sure ‘nough, in the morning!” Learn the drills & safety procedures
to fire our cavalry carbines, Gatling Gun, and Mountain Howitzers.
When your training is complete and you’re ready for action, we
move out to engage the enemy in the reenactment of a Texas frontier
battle. Our outpost site was used in the early 1870’s by the 4th US
Cavalry from nearby Fort Richardson.
Covert Ops Outpost
Then you’ll saddle up and hit the trail to find the outlaw hideout.
You’ll fight a battle reenactment and bring back the outlaws!
Move forward in time a century and a half - beyond the history of
the Cold War. You’ll land your boat at our secret headquarters and
“volunteer” for the intelligence service.
U.S. Cavalry Outpost
A top secret aircraft has crashed. It’s your job to recover it. Get
your mission briefing, training, and equipment at our classified
communications center. After dark you’ll use night vision, GPS,
radios, computers, satellite uplinks, and other equipment to locate
the crash site and recover the weapons.

“Fall in, Trooper!” It’s 1872 and you’re a new U.S. Cavalry recruit.
Now step off that Red River steamboat and report to a U.S. Cavalry
Regiment on the Texas plains! Load your gear on a wagon and march
up the hill to our authentic Company area. Our sergeants will assign
tents, issue uniforms and equipment. The quartermaster sergeant
will serve you standard army rations, including real hardtack, plus
stew, fruit, eggs, bacon, and more.

After supper, the Captain begins your training. Better follow orders!

Area 51 Outpost

An Alien starship has been shot down by an Air Force space fighter.
Your mission: locate and destroy the alien Zombiess. and prevent
the alien invasion.
Your team will train with replica M-16 paintball guns and laser
sights. Then you’ll move out to track down and destroy the alien
Zombie infestation. In the morning your crew will fight their way
through our tactical course. All equipment, paintball, safety gear,
and meals are provided.
Viking Outpost

Step back in time to the year 792 and become a Viking warrior! Get
a Viking shield and weapons and go to sea on a replica Viking Longship. Eat hearty meals of authentic Viking food in a medieval camp.
You’ll learn basic medieval combat techniques with real swords,
spears, and battleaxes by practicing on Pells (combat dummies).
Then learn the rules of medieval battle reenactments & use your
skills in a Viking combat reenactment with padded weapons.

Climbing Outpost
Sporting Clays Outpost
Learn to climb or hone your skills on the rugged cliffs of Lake
Bridgeport with our outstanding climbing staff. Land your pontoon
boat below the cliffs at Hermit’s Cave and set up camp in the forest
below the cliffs.

Sporting Clays is a shotgun shooting sport in which skeet/clay
pigeons are presented to the shooter in the flight pattern of real
game birds or rabbits. Each station represents one or more types
of bird with different trap locations and a variety of clay pigeon
speeds, elevations, and directions.
Our climbers have opened over 25 new climbing routes for all skill
levels from 5.8 beginner routes to 5.10+ advanced climbs! The The shooting area is a modified National Sporting Clays Associaroutes you climb, when you start, and when you stop are up to tion “5-Stand” course. We emphasize good basic shooting skills,

Cowboy Cooking and Fast Draw
Competition Outpost
Land your boat and right up the trail you’ll move into one of our
20 tipis. Now experience the hospitality and life-style of the Lords
of the Southern Plains, the Comanche and Kiowa, with an emphasis on storytelling, dancing, and weapons! You get 19th Century
Comanche/Kiowa clothing and Native American foods including
fry bread and sweet potatoes.
Practice the skills and weapons of Comanche warriors: lances,
bows, tomahawks, throwing knives, and throwing spears. You’ll
do Native American games and sports and other native skills, and
learn Comanche and Kiowa history and legends. Period clothing,
hunting weapons, safety gear, program equipment, and period
meals are provided.

Feel like part of the Old West, the excitement of standing on the
shooting line, your hand shaking, feeling the adrenalin, ready to
draw. . . And get ready for some real cowboy hospitality. It’s our
final Steak feast! For supper you’re cookin’ Texas steaks, corn, potatoes, biscuits, ‘n cobbler. For breakfast it’s a big Tex-Mex spread
of breakfast burritos and more. Now get your gun ‘n git ready to
draw! It’s time for the Fast Draw Competition . . .
All Terrain Vehicle Training Outpost
The All Terrain Vehicle training program is new. Join our staff in
the evening for the official 4 hour ATV Safety Institute certification
training course. Then in the morning explore the rugged wilderness
along our 15 miles of Lake Bridgeport shoreline. The 3-4 hour trail
ride is your reward for acing the course! All ATV participants must
be 14 or older to take the class and ride and can earn ASI’s ATV
RiderCourse certification.. Note that our Outpost Staff can take
up 3 younger Scouts along in our 4-person UTV.
You’ll know who really IS the fastest gun in Texas! And whose got
the biggest appetite!
We provide the food, cooking gear, historic Colt Peacemaker pistols,
and shooting supplies. We use competition targets from World
Champion Howard Darby.

Who Can Do Chisholm Trail
Crews of 9–15 older youth and adults from Boy Scout Troops,
Varsity Teams, Venture Crews, and Explorer Posts. Coed crews with
coed leadership are welcome. Girl Scout, American Heritage Girl
Scout, chartered organization/church youth groups, and all adult
crews are also welcome. Participants must be at least 13 years old
or a graduate of the Seventh grade and must pass the BSA Swimmer’s test. Swimmer’s tests should be administered before camp
by a qualified instructor or may be taken on arrival at camp. Do
Pre-camp swim tests if you can - they save you a lot of time at
check-in! Requirements are at the back of this booklet.

We hold three pontoon boats in reserve each week as instant replacements in case a boat needs to be taken out of service temporarily
for repairs. These boats are not available for reservation.

Adult Leadership Requirements
▼ Scotland’s 1st Leith Scout Troop tries tubing.
Each crew must have two registered adult leaders: one must be 21
or older, and one at least 18 or older. Every adult 18 or older must
BRING a current BSA YPT card. Coed crews must have coed
leadership. Crews with 2 or more boats that have less than 2 leaders per boat are required to keep their boats together at all times
in a group to maintain BSA 2-Deep Leadership standards. We will
pair crews as necessary to help meet these leadership requirements.
Chisholm Trail has one camp fee: youth and adults all pay the
same fee and do the same program.

units to fill boat slots. If your crew is unable to fill one of its boats,
we will try to help pair you up with other small crews prior to camp
(early registration is essential!). We can also help pair groups with
openings on a boat with other partial crews on request. However,
it is each crew’s responsibility to fill their boats.
Crew Size
Trek reservations are done by boat, based on the carrying capacity
of our pontoon boats. Chisholm Trail is designed for boat crews
of 9, 12, 13, and 15 participants. The minimum fee is based on
each boat’s rated capacity. Crews with a large number of smallsized participants may add one more person. Boat reservations are
1st-come 1st-served. Each week 1-2 boats may be available for
Composite Crews for units with a smaller number of Chisholm
Trail participants. Composite Crew boats are for units with 5 or less
participants ONLY, and require at least one 21 y.o.. Please check
with our office before reserving space in a Composite Crew Boat.
Composite Crew Boats will not be available once a week fills up.
Reservations
End of Summer SPECIAL: participants get $10 off for Week 3 and
$15 off for Week 4. Reservations are made by boat. Units registering a crew for Chisholm Trail must send a registration form with
deposits for the boats they need in order to confirm a reservation.

Each boat deposit reserves 1 boat for a Chisholm Trail crew. Our
pontoon boats carry 9, 12, 13, or 15 participants. Crews with a
majority of small-sized participants may add 1 more person per boat.
Boat reservations for each week are processed on a first-come firstserved basis. Deposits are credited to your account as a part of
your total camp fees; they are not an additional charge. Once you
reserve Pontoon boats, those boats are no longer available for other
units to reserve in that week. Deposits are $100 per person and are
non-refundable, are separate from any reservation deposits made
for our other camps, and may not be transferred to other camps
or programs. NOTE: pontoon boats rent for over $50 per hour,
plus gas, at private marinas on North Texas lakes.
Composite Crews: We reserve 1-2 pontoon boats (only) for units
with a small number of participants. Several small crews will be
combined on the composite crew boats. Reservations for these boats

to camp. Medical check in (and swim checks, when necessary) are
done on arrival at Sid Richardson Scout Ranch. Check in details
will be emailed to participating units.
Saturday or Monday Arrivals
Our staff is flexible. It’s YOUR adventure and we do our best to
make it a great one! Monday morning and Saturday arrivals are
welcome. Please contact us in advance to arrange Saturday or
Monday morning arrivals. We recommend that you bring your
own meals through Sunday lunch. For other arrangements contact
the Camping Registrar.
What You Bring, What You Get
Each crew receives pontoon boats, fuel to travel between outposts,
food, daily water and ice resupply, and all program supplies and
equipment. All participants get the full color Chisholm Trail Adventure T-shirt and patch. Crews also get a large Chisholm Trail
Wall Map to take home.
Each crew must provide its own tents, camping and cooking gear to
carry on the pontoon boat. Treat this as a backpacking trip: PACK
LIGHT!! We can provide cooking pots, utensils, tents, stoves and
other camping gear if necessary, especially for units that fly in to
DFW airport, which is 71 miles away.

Check In
Chisholm Trail crews stop at the front ranger house at Sid Richardson Scout Ranch and receive detailed check-in directions and
maps. You’ll set up your first night’s campsite at your first outpost.
Pontoon Boat training for adults is done Sunday afternoon, and
again on Monday for Monday morning arrivals. The program ends
with an all-you-can-eat steak cookout on Friday night.
We issue food kits regularly starting on Sunday evening at the
opening program outpost. We will resupply your crew daily at each
outpost and on request as necessary. Make sure your participants
pack light! Overloaded boats are slow!
Your crew will fix its own lunch every day from the food provided
in the food kits. Our outpost staffs at U.S. Cavalry, Texas Rangers,
Vikings, Covert Ops, Climbing, Area 51, & Highland Games will
prepare (or help you prepare) suppers and breakfasts. At the Fast
Draw Competition Outpost on Friday night we provide steaks and
grub for all and your crew will do the cookin.’
Boy Scout Troops with younger Scouts camping at Worth Ranch
or Camp Tahuaya and a crew of older Scouts at Chisholm Trail
should make separate transportation arrangements for their Chisholm Trail crew to get to our high adventure base. Sid Richardson
Scout Ranch is 1 hour from Worth Ranch. Maps are available on
request. Chisholm Trail Crews should do their swim checks prior

At the Sporting Clays outposts you will make your own suppers and breakfasts using your cooking gear and the backpacking food provided. We issue commercial backpacking meals
for suppers (they’re not bad - our campers and staff have
selected the best over the last 6 years!). We assemble breakfasts
and lunches in-house. Please contact us well in advance to arrange
for vegetarian meals or special dietary requirements!
Unlike most camps, we continue our program through Friday
evening and Saturday morning. All crews report to the Fast Draw
outpost on Friday evening for the final program our big closing steak
Be sure to bring at least two 5-gallon water coolers to carry on each
boat you have reserved. We can provide coolers if necessary. Our staff
provides 2 bags of ice to each crew daily at the watersports bases.
We have an ice machine for bagged ice at our marina. Staff bring
feast. Please let us know in advance if your unit needs to leave early
so that we can schedule you accordingly. It’s YOUR program and
we will try to accommodate all requests!

Chisholm Trail Program Schedule
Your crew can select an itinerary in April. Your crew will do five high
adventure outposts and all four watersports, including the Blob/
Waterpark and Sailing Base twice. You may also choose to spend a
program slot on your own. Please let us know if you want to skip
any water or land outposts so we can design a custom schedule for
you. Crew program schedules and detailed lake maps are issued to
each crew during the opening orientation.

Brazos River Canoe Trip
The Brazos River Canoe Trip (BRCT) is a 50-mile canoe
camping trip that is a Worth Ranch high adventure tradition! Spend a week on the river, earn BSA’s 50 Miler award,
and test your canoeing, camping, and fishing skills. We do
4 miles of hiking and 47 miles paddling the scenic Brazos
River from Possum Kingdom Dam to Oak’s Crossing. 2016

Any Troop, Team, Crew, or Post may send a crew on the
Brazos River Canoe Trip. Some units use the BRCT as a
shakedown for Northern Tier. Units doing their summer
camp at Camp Tahuaya or Sid Richardson Scout Ranch may
send a crew on the Brazos River Canoe Trip, but should make
their own transportation arrangements to and from Worth
Ranch for their canoeing group.
Gear: What You Bring, What You Get
Your crew must provide your own tents and camping gear. Bring
your favorite backpacking or two-burner portable camp stoves.
The camp can furnish propane and propane stoves if
requested. Other camping
gear can be arranged if requested in advance.

200 canoes at Worth Ranch.
Crew Size
We recommend groups of 6 to 20 canoeists. Small or “partial” crews
can be paired with other small crews (sign up early!). Combined
crews from multiple units are welcome.

Crews must have two adult leaders or pair with another crew to meet
2–deep leadership requirements. At least one must be 21, and one
18. All adults must have a BSA Youth Protection card. Coed crews
need coed leadership. Adults pay the same camp fees as youth.

We recommend that Scout participants on the BRCT be at least
13 years old. The following are minimum requirements, which
must be met in order to ensure a safe and fun experience:
1. Swimming Ability:
All participants must pass the swimmer’s test. The standard BSA
Swimmer’s Test will be used to classify swimmers and determine
those eligible to go on canoe trips.
2. Canoe Handling Ability:
Canoe trippers do not have to be “experts” before starting out. They
should know the fundamentals of launching, paddling positions
and strokes, general safety rules about wind and weather, loading
and care of canoes, and canoeing safety.
3. Safety Afloat:
All users of Council canoes should be trained in safety afloat. Adults
must bring current BSA Safe Swim Defense and Safety Afloat cards.
The courses are offered by the BSA Online Learning Center.

In addition to canoeing, fishing, and low impact camping, Scouts
can do several merit badges on the river, including Canoeing and

Sea Kayak & Caving Trek
Send a crew of older youth and adults from your Troop at Camp
Tahuaya or bring your entire Troop or Crew. Paddle wilderness
sections of the Lampassas River & Stillhouse Hollow Lake on a
week-lomg sea kayaking and fishing trek. You’ll camp at US Army
Corps of Engineers facilities and spend every day paddling, swimming, and fishing. Finish the your adventure week with a serious
wild caving trip with experienced cave guides.

Steele Island Wakeboarding
Spend a week learning to wakeboard and ski! The Steele
Island Wakeboarding Program was developed by expert
wakeboarders from Weatherford and Jacksboro - all Longhorn Council Eagle Scouts. It’s a wakeboard and ski program
for older Scouts, Venturers, and adults on beautiful Lake
Bridgeport at Sid Richardson Scout Ranch (SR2). The program focuses on developing your wakeboarding and skiing
skills, Watersports Merit Badge, Sailing, & Kayaking. Fees
still reduced for 2016 to $310 per person ($320 O/C).
We have expert staff and some of the best wind-protected
skiing and boarding water in the state. With a larger surface
area to ride on, wakeboards are easier than water skis for
beginners to learn. Experienced riders can do exciting jumps
and tricks. Space is limited to 16 participants.
You’ll report to our marina every morning at first light and
wakeboard and ski until lunch. Afternoons are at the Sailing
Base and the BLOB. You’ll report back again for evening program
right after supper and ride until dark. Expect to crash and burn a lot,
and to improve your skills significantly by the end of the week. You
can earn Watersports and other Merit Badge along the way if you
work at it. You will also take part in our Tubing Wars competition.

We provide boats, boards, skis, tubes, lifejackets, and program
equipment. Participants with personal equipment must have their

Participants
Limited Space Available
All participants must be at least 13 years old or graduates of 7th
grade and must pass the BSA Swimmer’s Test at camp or in an approved Pre-Camp Swim Test. Participants who are unable to pass
the BSA Swimmer’s Test will be enrolled in the traditional summer
camp program and will not receive a refund.
The Steele Island Wakeboarding program is limited to 16 participants per week. Enrollment is first come-first served and based on
full fee payment. Adults are welcome on a space available basis. All
participants pay the same fee.

Participants from SR2 will camp with their units in our base camp.
Camping arrangements will be made at SR2 for Steele Island participants from Troop camping at Worth Ranch or Camp Tahuaya,

Wakeboard School
Wakeboard School is a separate week-long intensive training program designed to develop intermediate to advanced wakeboarding
skills. Participants wakeboard all day long and stay in our modern
cabins at Lakeview Lodge on Lake Bridgeport. See the Wakeboard
School chapter on page 26.

Camp Tahuaya
Camp Tahuaya is a beautiful, heavily forested 150 acre camp with
the largest natural spring in Texas. Walking distances are easy! The
lake is stocked with trout. Tahuaya has a rich history. The cold sparkling springs attracted the camps & burial grounds of prehistoric
Plainview Man, and later several Native American tribes. Spanish
Conquistadors built their forts here.

Sid Richardson Scout Ranch
Sid Richardson Scout Ranch (SR2) is a Texas–size camp with16
miles of rugged shoreline on 10,000 acre Lake Bridgeport. SR2 has
lots of history, and 2,500 acres of scenic cliffs, prairie, and heavy forests. The camp’s historic 1870’s U.S. Cavalry site is a centerpiece of
our Chishol Trail Adventure Base. Our working Blacksmith’s Shop,
Country Store, museum, saloon, and Post Office are official Texas
landmarks relocated with original artifacts from Vineyard, Texas.
Bronco Patrol: the First Class Program
Bronco Patrol supplements your Troop’s skills development training and gives young Scouts an introduction to Scouting’s exciting
outdoor program. The Bronco Patrol curriculum concentrates on
Tenderfoot to 1st Class requirements and the Patrol Method.
Maverick Troop
SR2 offers a Maverick Troop during week 3 and 4 for individual
Scouts who could not make their Troop’s camp trip or who need an
extra week of camp. See the Maverick Troop info on page 39.
SR2 offers an air-conditioned dining hall, pool, computer center,
F-16 Flight Simulator Center, horsemanship, Blobs, Sailing with 30
sailboats, windsurfing, sporting clays range, Bronco Patrol 1st–year

Adult Training & Wilderness First Aid
SR2 offers Basic 1st Aid & CPR, and other training courses for
adults, and Wilderness First Aid for Scouts ages 16 and 17.

SR2 High Adventure Intern Program
Scouts age 14-17 can apply for the High Adventure Intern program
and spend a week doing living history and battle reenactments at

Shotgun MB is offered afternoons on our sporting clays range. We
have 6 Matarelli electric throwers - each holds 300 clay pigeons without reloading. We offer the 6 Rifle MB classes, giving Scouts lots of
shooting time in class and evenings to work on their required scores.
New Tents, Showers, & Latrines
In 2014 we opened 2 new adult shower & bathroom buildings.
All latrine bathrooms are rebuilt in our campsites with individual
stalls, modern toilet risers, & a new pair of campsite shower stalls.
The older youth showers have been rebuilt with individual stalls.

Snake Shows & Kingsnake Collection
Our reptile collection includes all 35 U.S. species of Kingsnakes &
Milk Snakes, all U.S. species of Rat Snakes, and Venomous Snakes
of Texas. Kingsnakes are famous for eating venomous snakes (they
are immune to the venom). Our snake shows are very popular with
Scouts and usually include a Kingsnake feeding (see below)!

Worth Ranch
Worth Ranch, known as “The Big Adventure,” has been a
Longhorn Council tradition since 1929. Worth is one of
America’s oldest and finest traditional Scouting programs.
We are located 60 miles west of Fort Worth on the Brazos
River at the foot of Kyle Mountain. The historic stone and
petrified wood buildings that encircle our parade ground
showcase the rich and colorful history of Worth Ranch.
Comanche Indians once lived on our parade ground, and
Quannah Parker, the last great war chief of the Comanche,
was born only a few miles up the Brazos River. The chuck
wagon was developed near here in 1866.
When your troop attends Worth Ranch you’ll receive traditional Scouting at its best from our talented staff and outstanding program facilities. Your Scouts can climb and rappel
on the cliffs of our Climbing Gardens, fish, row, canoe and
kayak with us on the Brazos River, hike Kyle Mountain, swim

High Adventure Options
NEW artificial ski run and Wintersports MB opened in 2014. Longhorn Council high adventure programs are available to all older
youth and adults from units camping at Worth Ranch, Tahuaya, or
SR2. You can send patrols on our Brazos River Canoe Trip 50–miler
(p.10), based at Worth Ranch. Older youth and adults may do the
unique and exciting Chisholm Trail Adventure on Lake Bridgeport
(p.4). Individual youth and adults may spend a week learning to
wakeboard at Steele Island Wakeboard Program (p.14). High adventure programs require a separate reservation and deposit.
The Hammer Patrol
Hammer Patrol is for brand new Scouts (Scout Rank) and focuses on
basic Scouting outdoor skills and the requirements for Tenderfoot,
such as first aid, fire building, use of wood tools, map and compass
reading, and knots and lashings. The Hammer Patrol also covers
some requirements for 2nd and 1st Class. We encourage experienced
troop leaders to assist Scouts enrolled in Hammer Patrol.

The Longhorn Council Shooting Sports Chairman will run a
Scoutmaster Shotgun tournament on Monday night each week.
All adult leaders in camp are invited to participate and compete
for the awards.
The Family Night Campfire Program
The famous Worth Ranch campfire program is scheduled for
Thursday night for your troop, families, and guests. Guests can join
us for dinner at 6:00 PM., visit the Worth Ranch Museum, then
attend our OA Callouts and famous family night campfire. Leaders
should let the camp know on Tuesday the number of guests they
expect for dinner on Thursday.

Two Swimming Pools
The Worth Ranch Chuck Wagon
Worth Ranch has two modern swimming pools - the large main
pool and a smaller pool with a volleyball net and basketball goals.
Learn dutch oven cooking at the Worth Ranch Chuck Wagon. The
chuck wagon was developed near Worth Ranch in 1866 by Charles
Goodnight as he and partner Oliver Loving prepared to take a herd
of 2,000 Longhorn cattle from northern Texas to Denver, CO.
Goodnight purchased a government wagon and completely rebuilt
it with the famous sloping cook box on the back.
New Showers, Latrines, and Tents
We have 100 new tents for Worth Ranch. The new tents will have
permanent tent frames. The latrine bathrooms in every campsite
are now completely rebuilt with individual stalls and modern toilet
risers, as well as a new pair of shower stalls. The old youth showers
in the campsites by the river (the Bottoms) have been being rebuilt
with modern individual stalls.
NEW Adult Showers opened in 2013: All adult and youth
showers now have individual private bathroom and shower stalls.

Rock Climbing and Rappelling
Learn climbing and rappelling on the cliffs of the Worth Ranch
Climbing Garden. We offer Climbing Merit Badge, as well as daily
climbing programs.
Worth Ranch Volunteers
Each summer a corps of volunteer commissioners assist the Camp
Director and the Scoutmasters to ensure that each troop has a
successful summer camp. Scouters with special expertise can also
volunteer to teach special merit badge classes. To volunteer as a
Worth Ranch Camp Commissioner or to teach a special merit badge,

Aquatic School
July 10-16, 2016
Aquatic School is a leadership program that teaches Scouts
and Venturers how to teach aquatics skills and to plan and
lead their unit’s aquatics activities. Aquatic School is much
more than simply a “lifeguard school” — rather, it’s a leadership and skills development program that gives your Scouts
or Venturers the skills needed to make them better instructors and better leaders. Aquatic School graduates are taught
the fundamentals of Safe Swim Defense and Safety Afloat,
the principles of teaching a non-swimmer, planning skills
for Unit swims and float plans, as well as aquatic first aid
and emergency procedures. Graduates also learn and hone
public speaking and presentation skills, and 16 Scouting
knots. Register by January 15 and get a $15 OFF. Unit Leaders
who sign up at least 2 A-School participants get an Aquatic
School Recruiter t-shirt.
A-School is at Worth Ranch July 10-16, 2016. Consider
sending several participants to Aquatic School each year to assure a
safe and enjoyable unit aquatics program. Outstanding performers
can earn the coveted ANCHOR award.
When participants arrive they are split into two ships, each with
two watches that will compete all week as they hone their leadership, teaching, and aquatic skills. Each ship will design a flag and

Youth Attendance requirements
A-School participants must be registered Boy Scouts, varsity Scouts,
or Venturers. Participants must be at least 13 years of age on or
before date of arrival. Participants must be 15 years old by July 10,
2016 in order to earn BSA Lifeguard, and must be 16 years old by
July 10, 2016 in order to earn Paddlecraft Safety and Swimming
and Water Rescue certification. Participants must complete the
BSA swimmers test. Application on page 42.

Aviation & Shooting Sports Camp

The F-16, Technology, & Shooting Camp is a very demanding and intensive week. We offer 18 merit badges for participants. Many participants in 2012 earned 16 merit badges. It
is a VERY busy week! We have a VERY talented staff - mostly
Eagle Scouts, and many who are members of MENSA, plus
experienced NRA and archery instructors. Perform nights
ops missions to rescue downed pilots, and fly simulated air combat
missions in our 16 networked F-16 simulator cockpits.
The 16 simulator cockpits are networked to allow Scouts to communicate and fly missions together or as opposing teams. Simulators are set in F-16 cockpit sections with replica ACES II ejection
seats. Simulators use big screens and the same HOTAS (Hands On
Throttle & Stick) used in many military simulators. Participants
in the flight school will do Aviation Merit Badge in the our flight
simulator cockpits. Standard fees apply for Merit Badges.

Aquatics Merit Badge Week
July 3-9, 2016 at SR2
Boy Scouts age 13 & older can earn up to 7 aquatics
merit badges. Participants will meet daily with the Program
Director and Aquatics Director to review their progress.
Participants must be registered Boy Scouts at least 13 years

2016 Fees, Schedules, and Information
To reserve a space in Boy Scout summer camp make an initial $10
per Scout deposit to confirm the reservation. To reserve a space in
a High Adventure Program make a $100 per person deposit for all
youth and adults attending in order to confirm the reservation.
Chisholm Trail Adventure reservations are made by pontoon boat,
based on the carrying capacity of each boat. Each boat carries 9,
12, 13, or 15 participants. Fees for each boat are based on the
boat’s rated capacity. When you reserve a pontoon boat you are
agreeing to pay for its rated capacity. (Boats carrying one extra small
person will pay the Composite Crew fee for that 1 extra person.)
To reserve a Chisholm Trail trek make an initial deposit for the
pontoon boat sizes needed. 1-2 boats are available for Composite
Crews made up of small groups.
Please make separate reservations for each camp and High Adventure
program your unit will attend. Deposits are credited to your unit’s
account as a part of the total camp fees and are not an additional
charge. Deposits are non-refundable.

Camp Leadership
All units in camp must be under the leadership of 2 adults at all times,
one of whom must be over 21, the other at least 18 years of age.
Leaders may rotate if necessary, but at least 2 adults must be with
a unit each 24 hours in camp. All adults arriving at camp must present
the camp director a copy of their current Youth Protection Training card from
BSA’s Texas-approved classroom YPT course; OR, take the course on arrival
(1hr). Troops may share leadership by prior arrangement.

Parts A, B, & C, of the current BSA Annual Health and Medical
Record are mandatory for ALL youth and adult campers. This health
history, parental/guardian informed consent and hold harmless/
release agreement, and talent release statement is to be completed
by each participant and by Scout’s parents/guardians.

All Scouts and adults in camp are now required to have a current BSA health
form, including a medical examination, dated within the last 12 months.
Youth medical forms MUST INCLUDE all required parental signatures, including those giving permission to treat in an emergency.
All youth and adults must have a medical screening upon arrival, including late arrivals. All illnesses MUST be reported promptly. The
camp reserves the right to refuse admittance to any camper who, in
the opinion of the medical staff and Camp Director, has developed
a physical or medical situation which could present a hazard to the
camper, or to other campers, by their presence at camp.
Campers registered in the Longhorn Council are covered by an accident and sickness policy. Out of Council units must provide a copy
of their accident council’s insurance. All accidents and illnesses must
be reported to the camp Health Officer. Unit leadership should
file claims for all medical care not provided by the Health
Officer. Medical expenses incurred after leaving camp, due
to an accident taking place at camp and registered with
the Health Officer, must be submitted immediately to the
Council office for clearance with the insurance company.
Summer camp and high adventure check-in is 1:00 PM - 3:30 PM.
(Note: the schedule for Longhorn Council 2016 LDS Week is different.) Arriving troops will be met by a staff member (your Troop
Guide) who will help with check-in procedures. Camp personnel
cannot check units in before the scheduled times. Units which
cannot travel on Sunday may check-in Saturday or early Monday
morning. Normal summer camp departure time on Saturday is 8:00
a.m. to 10:00 a.m. NOTE: Chisholm Trail crews may finish program later on Saturday and often depart 10:00 a.m. - 12:00 Noon.
Religious Services
Chapel services are conducted during camp. Check the camp’s
weekly schedule for times. Campers are encouraged to attend.
Visitors, Extra Meals, and Family Night
The Family Night Campfire program is held at Camp Tahuaya and
Sid Richardson Scout Ranch on Friday evenings, and at Worth
Ranch on Thursday evenings. Units are responsible for purchasing
guest Dining Hall meal wristbands in advance. Please remind all
visitors that they must park in the camp parking lot and may not
drive to the campsites. Vehicle traffic is prohibited in the campsite
areas on Family Night. Guests or visitors arriving at camp at any
time other than Family Night must check in at the office and be
approved by the Camp Director before visiting campsites and
program areas, and before eating in the Dining Hall.
Extra Meal Costs: Breakfast $7.00, Lunch $8.00, Dinner $9.00.
Pre–Camp Leader’s Meeting
A pre–camp information meeting for unit leaders will be
held on Wednesday evening of the week prior to your arrival
in camp at 7:00 PM at the Council office. Meetings for Sid
Richardson, Worth Ranch, Chisholm Trail, Brazos River
Canoe Trip, and Steele Island Wakeboarding are at the Fort
Worth office. Meetings for Camp Tahuaya are at the Waco
office. If your unit must travel a long distance you can do
your final attendance updates and info by email or conference call with the Camp Director or Camping Registrar.

Camperships
Camperships up to 50% of camp summer camp fees are available for
Longhorn Council Scouts who need financial assistance. Applications available at Council service centers and website. Camperships
are limited to Longhorn Council Scouts attending a Longhorn
Council merit badge summer camp. DEADLINE: applications
MUST be submitted by than the 4th Thursday in April.

Our camps offer special recognition, conservation, and honor awards
for Scouts and leaders, such as the Wrangler Award (all camps),
Camp Tahuaya Scoutmaster Merit Badge, SR2 Scoutmaster Merit
Badge, Worth Ranch Scout Award, Worth Ranch Leader Award,
and Joe Taylor Ecology Award (WR).
Prohibited Items and Actions
Ammunition, Firearms, and Fireworks.
Riding in the back of pick up trucks is forbidden. Campers are
not allowed to bring fireworks, firearms, BB guns, pellet guns, or
personal ammunition to camp. Off-duty police officers should
secure their weapon either in their vehicle or with the Camp Director. Sheath knives and axes are not allowed. Drivers who endanger
Scouts, leaders, and staff by speeding in camp will lose their driving
privileges and may be sent home.

Guidelines for Pre-Camp Swim Tests
Units may elect to take swim tests before arrival at camp. Pre-Camp swim test significantly speeds up the check-in process on your arrival at camp.
Requirements for Pre-camp Swim Tests
We can honor pre-camp swim tests only if the required paperwork is properly completed.
1. Tests must be performed in accordance with BSA Swimming test standards.
2. Must be supervised by a certified BSA, Red Cross, YMCA Lifeguard, or Swim Coach. BRING A PHOTOCOPY of the Lifeguard’s CERTIFICATION Card.
This is required. Be sure that the copy includes the expiration date of the lifeguard’s certification – copy both sides if the card is 2-sided.
2. Bring a list of youth and adults who took the test showing the skill level they earned in the test: Swimmer, Beginner, or Non-Swimmer.
The list must be signed by the unit leader and the certifying lifeguard and include a note attesting that the swim test was conducted
according to the BSA requirements listed below.
Classification of Swimming Ability
The BSA Swimmer Test
The swimmer test demonstrates the minimum level of swimming ability required for safe deep-water swimming. The various components of the test
evaluate the several skills essential to this minimum level of swimming ability: Jump feet first into water over the head in depth, level off, and begin
swimming. Swim 75 yards in a strong manner using one or more of the following strokes: sidestroke, breaststroke, trudgen, or crawl; then swim 25
yards using an easy, resting backstroke. The 100 yards must be completed in one swim without stops and must include at least one sharp turn. After
completing the swim, rest by floating. The test administrator must objectively evaluate the individual performance of the test, and in so doing should
keep in mind the purpose of each test element.
“Jump feet first into water over the head in depth, level off, and begin swimming. . . .”
The swimmer must be able to make an abrupt entry into deep water and begin swimming without any aids. Walking in from shallow water, easing in
from the edge or down a ladder, pushing off from side or bottom, or gaining forward momentum by diving do not satisfy this requirement.
“. . . Swim 75 yards in a strong manner using one or more of the following strokes: sidestroke, breaststroke, trudgen, or crawl; . . .”
The swimmer must be able to cover distance with a strong, confident stroke. The 75 yards must not be the outer limit of the swimmer’s ability; completion of the distance should give evidence of sufficient stamina to avoid undue risks. Dog-paddling and strokes repeatedly interrupted and restarted are
not sufficient; underwater swimming is not permitted. The itemized strokes are inclusive. Any strong side or breaststroke or any strong overarm stroke
(including the back crawl) is acceptable.
“. . . swim 25 yards using an easy, resting backstroke . . .”
The swimmer must indicate the ability to execute a restful, free-breathing backstroke that can be used to avoid exhaustion during swimming activity.
This element of the test necessarily follows the more strenuous swimming activity to show that the swimmer is, in fact, able to use the backstroke as a
relief from exertion. The change of stroke must be accomplished in deep water without any push-off or other aid. Any variation of the elementary may
suffice if it clearly provides opportunity for the swimmer to rest and regain wind.
“. . . The 100 yards must be swum continuously and include at least one sharp turn. . . .”
The total distance is to be covered without rest stops. The sharp turn simply demonstrates the swimmer’s ability to reverse direction in deep water
without assistance or push-off from side or bottom.
“. . . After completing the swim, rest by floating.”
This critically important component of the test evaluates the swimmer’s ability to maintain in the water indefinitely even though exhausted or otherwise
unable to continue swimming. Treading water or swimming in place will further tire the swimmer and are therefore unacceptable. The duration of the
float test is not significant, except that it must be long enough for the test administrator to determine that the swimmer is, in fact, resting and could
likely continue to do so for a prolonged time. The drown-proofing technique may be sufficient if clearly restful, but it is not preferred. If the test is
completed except for the floating requirement, the swimmer may be retested on the floating only (after instruction) provided that the test administrator
is confident that the swimmer can initiate the float when exhausted.
The Beginner Test
Jump feet-first into water over the head in depth, level off, swim 25 feet on the surface, stop, turn sharply, resume swimming as before, and return
to starting place. The entry and turn serve the same purpose as in the swimmer test. The swimming can be done with any stroke, but no underwater
swimming is permitted. The stop assures that the swimmer can regain a stroke if it is interrupted. The test demonstrates that the beginning swimmer
is ready to learn deepwater skills and has the minimum ability required for safe swimming in a confined area in which shallow water, sides, or other
support is less than 25 feet from any point in the water.

Chisholm Trail deposits reserve one (or more) pontoon boats or individual composite crew slots. All deposits count as part of your camp fee. Boat
reservations are first-come first-served. Reservation fees are equivalent to $100 per person for each spot on a pontoon boat and are non-refundable.
