Introduction
Tino was born in Indonesia, but raised
in the Netherlands. After graduating
from the Academy of fine Arts (Artez)
in majors audiovisual media and
photography he continued his career on
an international level as photographer,
filmmaker, and graphic designer. Tino
is residing in Jakarta and runs a digital
design studio (Spotlight New Media)
that is specialized in audiovisual- and new media productions.

Tino successfully accomplished comprehensive projects
for institutions such as the Royal Institute of Southeast
Asian and Caribbean Studies (KITLV), the Netherlands
Red Cross, the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands and the Erasmus Huis in Jak ar ta. Several times he
was awarded grants and par ticipated in exhibitions worldwide. Tino is affiliated with renowned institutions such as
the Erasmus Huis in Jak ar ta and is a contributor for print
and online media.

Artist Statement
My habits to draw cartoon characters on class tables
and toilet doors which had a close resemblance with the
people around me, were probably one of the reasons I
applied to study at the Academy of Fine Arts in Arnhem
(ARTeZ). In the early stage, drawing and painting caught
my attention. But soon photography and the camera
became the primary tools for expression.
After studying philosophy and Dutch law at the
University in Nijmegen I was accepted at the Art
Institute. I ever touched a camera, the Polaroid of my
father and the pocket camera that belonged to my
mother. The holiday snapshots I often had a look at as
well with the pictures from the family album became an
inspiration.

“ N i ce B oy ”
Touring solo exhibtions, workshops: Jak ar ta,
Bandung, Yogyak ar ta, Leiden, Netherlands.
My first and “serious” photo I took during my study
years, a self portrait that was shot on black and white
film. Two mirrors, the automatic timer, an office desk
lamp and tripot were all to make the picture. I rebuild
my bathroom into a dark room where I processed my
own negatives. Until today I still process and print my
own black and white pictures. This process is just as
valuable to me as the making of the pictures itself.
During my studies I started learning to think in lightand dark tones, black and white and everything in
between. The grey tones are the colours, the gradations
that bring impressions and harmony together. Out
school I started working on assignments from friends,
acquaintances, and relatives.
My first photograph I sold during the third year of my
study. A large print of a woman that passes by. I took
the picture from the doorstep of a Georgian café which
had a view on the street. For me taking photographs
starts with “thinking”. Asking myself: Where is home
and what is the true meaning of identity, culture and
family?.
I strive to create images that are timeless, moments that
reveal and touch upon the essence of the human being.
