His handicap has been as high as 4
goals and he continues to play extensively at New Bridge. His super team

Jim Huber, a retired Milwaukee lawyer, began his polo career with the
Uihleins and Stevenses. His son Tom
was an outstanding intercollegiate player
and grandson Tommy is currently doing well in the interscholastics.Jim has
been as high as 2 goals and has recently
been eased down to just under zero. He
keeps about 20 head, training them with
the assistance of a couple of talented
young players each year (see below).

Wagener Polo is pleased to include Adam Snow as an occasional participant. He was kind enough to share a photo from the ceremony for his
induction to the Polo Hall of Fame in Lake Worth, Florida, in March of
2014. His wife Shelley and sons Dylan, Nathan and Aidan led the cheers.
Adam Snow played his early polo with his family at Myopia Polo Club (note hat
and shirt from Boston teams). He has played all over the world on his march to a
10-goal rating. He maintains about 25 head in his breeding and training program
at Langdon Road Polo and currently carries a rating of 6 goals. He is credited with
Owen Rinehart for creating the explosion of polo in Aiken. HIS dream team puts

Ohio trainer WJ Durrett played with Billy
Raab when he was just a teenager. Billy was
employed by a small number of major sponsors over the next few decades in the
hotspots of medium-goal tournaments from
Florida to Texas to the Northeast. He peaked
at 5 goals and spent one memorable summer in England where his team swept the
silver in every tournament they entered.

Umpiring has always been another
of Billy Raab’s strong points. He was
chosen as one of the first four professional umpires in Palm Beach.

Heir. Megan started short stirrup classes at
age 8 on a pony named Jolly Rancher.

Megan Donahey has stiking form on a horse.
Both of her parents have played polo all her
life, with her mother Colleen adding her
background in show jumping. Megan made
the trip from their Derry Heir Farm in Ohio to
the major show in Harrisburg, PA, her sophomore and senior years in high school with
her horse Carakter in 2009 and her mother’s
jumper Cantaluppi in 2011. She balances
jumping and polo during her summer breaks
from Furman University. Megan is employed
at Derry Heir where high expectations are
the norm. She emphasizes that she is not
treated differently from the rest of the staff.
“It has taught me to be responsible,” Megan
noted. She played with that sense of duty to
both offense and defense on the trophysweeping Derry Heir team in the fall of 2013
at Wagener Polo.

Cot Campbell has many of the qualities
of a fine polo player – a family background
in showing and racing, a deep appreciation
for the majesty of the Thoroughbred, and,
as stated in the subtitle of his third book, a
“riproarious” approach to life. He has,
however, resisted owning a string of polo
ponies.
Throughout his highly successful career
as the initiator of Thoroughbred racing
partnerships under the green and yellow
Dogwood Stable silks, Cot Campbell has
interacted with many colorful polo
characters. Many have been at the top of
the racing industry.
To establish some undeniable ‘street
cred’, a good start would be Lane’s End.
Not surprisingly, Cot Campbell’s
associations with Will Farish have worked
out well. Both of Dogwood’s winners of
Triple Crown races (Summer Squall,
Preakness, 1990, and Palace Malice,
Belmont, 2013) came from Will Farish’s
impressive breeding operation. Campbell
explains in his book Lightning in a Jar,
“[Summer Squall] was bred and sold by one
of the most-admired breeders in the game.
This was Will Farish’s Lane’s End Farm in
Central Kentucky. One could have complete
confidence in the colt’s upbringing and
believe any information provided about
him.”
Though the business model of racing
partnerships was not particularly embraced
by the established farms and families when
Campbell first promoted Dogwood Stable
in 1966, soon the concept caught on. Don
and Doo Little’s Centennial Farm appears
at the top of the list of competitors in
Campbell’s book copyrighted in 2000. “We
became good friends,” noted Campbell in
an interview in January of 2014. “I received
a very nice letter from Doo after Palace
Malice won the Belmont.”
Trainers were also high on Cot’s list of
running buddies. Del Carroll, who peaked
at 8 goals and was highly respected for the
speed and determination of his polo
Thoroughbreds, stayed busy during August
at Saratoga as he played hard at both
sports. Campbell commented, “Del was a
wonderful trainer – everybody liked him. He
was killed on a racehorse, you know.” Del’s
daughter Robin continues to instruct polo
at Brandywine, their home club in
Pennsylvania.
Cot Campbell’s eyes lit up when asked
about Allen Jerkens. The Blood-Horse
organization published a book of Anthony
Alonso’s art in 2007 in which the portrait of
H. Allen Jerkens was called “The Giant
Killer.” Cot immediately recalled Onion and
Prove Out — the two Jerkens-trained
horses who beat Secretariat. “I knew him
well. We bought horses in California.” One
was named Polo Harvey.
Dogwood Stables also campaigned
Inlander, the 1987 steeplechase Horse of
the Year. “If horse racing is a demanding
sport and way of life for the rest of us, it is
excruciatingly tough for the jumping
fraternity,” Campbell stated in Lightning in
a Jar: “These fine Thoroughbred trainers
came – broken bones and all – from the
ranks of steeplechase riders: …” A dozen
are named including, of course, Jonathan
Sheppard, who raced and played polo at
Brandywine and Saratoga.
Cot Campbell has been on friendly terms
with Jack Oxley and numerous other polo
families involved in racing. He smiled at the
thought of Wally Ganzi in his whites, and
how they raced a horse named Speedy
Deedy. Cot remembers watching South
Carolinians Tommy Biddle, Tiger Kneece
and Justin Pimsner play at Saratoga, but
before diving into the Aiken chapter it might
be helpful to look at Dogwood’s early days
in Atlanta.
As a child Cot Campbell showed gaited
horses and earned a tri-state amateur rider
title for Missouri, Nebraska and Iowa. His
father created a Thoroughbred training
facility in the polo town of Franklin,
Tennessee, in 1940, and Cot gained handson experience before World War II dashed
that dream. He writes that in 1950 he moved
to Atlanta “with no money, borrowed clothes
and a bad reputation.”
His talents and enthusiasm earned Cot
Campbell an ascending position in
advertising which would have ended badly
had he not joined Alcoholics Anonymous
in 1957 (and remained sober through the
next 57 years of entertaining clients). He
started the successful Burton-Campbell ad
agency in 1964 but sold his share in 1972
to devote all of his considerable energy to
the promotion of Thoroughbred ownership.
Dr. John McClure rode to his Shakerag
hounds during polo downtime and Cot
Campbell became a member of the hunt
club. Cot and his wonderful wife Anne
socialized with Judy and Dolph Orthwein,
but it was the inimitable umpire and 2-goal
player A. Leigh Baier who partnered with
two other fellows and Cot on their first race
horse, Social Asset. By 1971 they bought a
“smallish” 2-year-old bay filly with a
“crooked ankle” (Cot’s descriptions) and
chose the historic name of Mrs. Cornwallis
from her parents Yorktown and Evening Out.
Mrs. Cornwallis went on to win three stakes
races and was considered “one of the top
fillies of her generation.”
As a lawyer Leigh Baier also contributed
to the partnership formula. He was quite
fond of Mrs. Cornwallis recalling, “She had
so much heart,” but he experienced
reoccurring nightmares that she had fallen
off a loading ramp. Weeks later Cot
mentioned that her crate had been jostled
but Mrs. Cornwallis had not been injured.
By 1986 the Campbells gave up their 400acre farm in central Georgia and moved
Dogwood Stable to Aiken, South Carolina.
Dogwood has reserved a parking space at
Aiken Polo’s Whitney Field for many of the
nearly 30 years since. Club president
Charlie Bostwick referred to Cot as “a very
good fan of polo,” and mentioned that the
Dogwood items will be displayed in the
same room with his father Pete Bostwick’s
memorabilia at the Aiken Thoroughbred
Racing Hall of Fame when the renovations
are finished in the fall.
Equestrian writer Ben Baugh has been a
regular at The Aiken Standard for the last
decade and he brings an extensive
knowledge of Thoroughbred racing from his
native New York. The victory of Palace
Malice in the 145th running of the Belmont
brought great joy to the Aiken equestrian
community. On December 30, 2013, Baugh
wrote the article naming Cot Campbell as
Aiken’s Person of the Year: “However, it was
Dogwood Stable’s President W. Cothran
Campbell who said it best when he
exclaimed to the global television audience,
‘They’ll be dancing in the streets of Aiken
tonight!’ “

subject of culling, Cot points out in Lightning
in a Jar, “…you must get the horse as sound
as you can and find a good home for him
as a hunter, polo pony or pleasure horse of
some sort.” He mentioned over breakfast
at the Track Kitchen, “I know Adam [Snow]
and Owen [Rinehart], but I haven’t sold
them any horses.”
Dogwood Stable gained a vigorous fan
base, especially in Charleston, SC, when
Limehouse ran in the 2004 Kentucky Derby.
He won a third of his 21 starts, becoming
the sixth of Dogwood’s seven horses to earn
more than a million dollars. “We all followed
his career,” noted Chip Limehouse, even
though the polo-playing family was not a
part of his ownership team.
Surely there are many more stories of
polo people who connected to Cot
Campbell over the past eight and a half
decades. Madelyn Cobb, granddaughter
of Mack Jason and Ty Cobb, might have
heard tales from the days of early aviation
when Cot’s father “Captain” Bill Campbell
(the first person to fly upside down!) teamed
with Ty Cobb on promotional tours for CocaCola. Drop a note to your friendly POLO
