Tonia Doerksen

Career Path:
• After completing an internship in a retail pharmacy, I began working as a
pharmacist at Kingston General Hospital in Ontario, where I specialized in
Oncology.
• After 3 years in Kingston, I came to McGill University to do a Ph.D in
Pharmacology. During this time, I conducted research looking at the effects of
drug treatment (eg, chemotherapy drugs) in males on their subsequent offspring.
• After completing my Ph.D in 1999, I worked as a medical writer developing
multimedia training programs for the pharmaceutical industry. These programs
helped pharmaceutical representatives discuss their drug products with doctors
and other health care professionals.
• More recently, I have gone back to the practice of pharmacy and am working as
a clinical pharmacist at the Montreal General Hospital. I work mainly in the
oncology clinic and my job is to ensure that patients receive their chemotherapy
in a safe and efficacious manner – I ensure that the doses prescribed are optimal
and safe for each patient, that their chemotherapy does not interfere with other
medications that they require, and I counsel new patients about their
chemotherapy and the side effects they may experience.

many different careers, the required education, salary ranges, and job prospects for the

Ali Dussault M.Ed., BCBA Clinical Director of the Gold Centre’s Abili-­‐T EIBI Program Education:
• Ali obtained her undergraduate degree from the University of British Columbia,

concentration in Autism and Developmental Disabilities.

• Ali has supported young children diagnosed with autism spectrum disorders and

Education:
When I was a student at Trafalgar I was sure that I would be pursuing a career in
Science. In fact, I was rather closed to other types or careers in those days, being rather
obsessed with that one idea. However, it was not very long before I began to realize that
science was not playing to my strengths and that I would have trouble succeeding in that
field. It was a hard adjustment for me to make... I switched over to business studies in
university, but I felt a bit lost and disappointed during that time, not sure what I wanted to
do.
Career Path:
When I graduated from university, I worked in sales for a while, and then I got married
and had three great kids. I stayed home with them full-time for about 10 years. It was
such a great time! But finally it was time to put energy into my career too.
I became passionate about business, and I realized that I was really good at it! For the
last 10 years I have had a lot of jobs within two different companies: sales, customer
service and then finally becoming a Manager within the Human Resources Department.
During this time, I have also been studying, finally getting my MBA last year.
Other Information:
Current Company: Pharmascience, a generics pharmaceutical company with 1500
employees. This company is based in Montreal and is the largest pharmaceutical
employer in Quebec. It's current strategy involves expanding throughout the world.
My passion for lifelong learning has a lot to do with my career path and my current job in

Career Path:
My road to medical school was relatively straight-forward, essentially following a pretty
typical educational path, studying basic sciences along the way. Once in medical school,
while I knew I wanted to go into family medicine, I was open to the multitude of
experiences and clinical environments that I was exposed to. I continued to enjoy and
desire the personal connections and the continuity of care that is offered in family
medicine, so that is the discipline I chose for residency training.
In residency, I continued to be interested in emergency medicine, women’s health and
obstetrics, and psychiatry. I had choices to make regarding additional training beyond
graduation and was faced with some difficult decisions along the way. I will discuss my
eventual career choices and the challenges I faced getting there. I will also share how
much I love being a doctor and how rewarding and stimulating a career in medicine can
be.
Other Information:
I balance my busy career with motherhood, as well as a variety of extracurricular
activities, both athletic and creative. A work-life balance is very important in order to
keep going in such a busy and challenging environment. I continue to try to attempt to
achieve this balance.

Career Path:
• I graduated from McGill in 1998 with a degree in Religious Studies and then
traveled for a year in Asia. I was interested in lots of things but hadn’t identified
my “passion” and had no idea what kind of career I wanted!

The internet boom was starting and through a friend I got hired as an assistant to
a VP in a company that made marketing software. That VP became CEO, and as
his career evolved so did mine. He mentored and promoted me through roles in
marketing and sales, and eventually I became Director of Business Development
working on partnerships with companies like Yahoo, eBay, and Amazon. I was
managing projects, budgets and people.
•
That first boss then started his own dot.com and hired me to run the day-to-day.
After two years there I moved to an internet-marketing ad agency where I was
Account Director for four years with clients like Aeroplan, Air Canada, Pfizer, and
more.
•
I had built a good career, but still had the nagging feeling that I wasn’t working in
my life’s passion. But what WAS my passion??? I would go for a run to clear my
head, do a yoga class to de-stress. Some days planning to go to the gym at 5pm
would motivate me through a work-day. Suddenly it hit me, and after 12 years in
internet marketing, I decided to become a personal trainer.
•
My first career was one I fell into. My second career is one I chose because I
love it.
•
It can feel like there’s a lot of pressure to decide early on where you want to end
up, and to choose the path in high school that will take you where you want to be
later in life. The truth is that very few people have a linear progression in their
careers. We can’t see far enough into the future to know where we’ll end up…
sometimes you just need to see far enough to trust the next step.
Other information:
In my Traf days I focused on academics and wasn’t athletic at all! I took advanced math
and physics to “keep my doors open”. It was only in CEGEP that I started to work out
and discovered that I was good at it!
Today I am 40 years old, a mother of two small children (ages three and one years old)
and in the best shape of my life.
My years at Traf instilled in me a strong set of values and I knew I wanted to do work
that would help others. For many years I thought I should move to a developing nation
and work with the needy… eventually I realized that I could help the people around me
live healthier lives, one person and one hour at a time.
What you choose in high school doesn’t have to dictate “what you do”. But if you stay
true to yourself, those choices will form part of the strong building blocks that will make
you “who you are”.

• I graduated from Macdonald High School with honors,
• I pursued Commerce at John Abbott College (because my parents did not think
that studying photography was “practical”).
• After taking a year off to travel, I continued my education at Concordia University
where I entered the Bachelor of Commerce program with the intent of doing a
double major in Finance and Marketing (instead of taking the longer route of
doing an MBA).
• In my last semester of university, I had an opportunity to work in Brazil, so I took
it – and never went back to finish my degree.
Career Path:
• After returning from my adventures in the Caribbean, I got a job as a waitress
and worked my way to becoming the manager of that restaurant and eventually
to the position of Marketing Director at the Head Office for the franchise. I got to
know our IT consultant well and when he started up the Canadian division of a
US Fortune 500 company, he asked me to join him, so I took a position in
marketing at Insight Canada and began a very successful career in the corporate
world. I eventually became the Director of Operations for the Canadian division
of Insight and helped to grow the organization from 6 people to more than 1500
in two years. After that I moved on to corporate acquisitions, living in the UK,
Germany… even in Winnipeg over one very cold winter!
•
After a corporate restructuring resulting in all senior management positions being
moved to the US, I chose to leave Insight rather than accept a position as a V.P.
based out of Phoenix, AZ. I worked as a supply chain consultant at G.E. for
about a year and then I was recruited by Future Electronics to take on the role of
Worldwide Director of Transportation & Logistics.
•
Despite my career success, I always felt that something was missing… I had
been volunteering my time at the Ecomuseum Zoo and knew that they had a
great need for someone to help with their expansion plans, but as a non-profit
organization, they did not have the budget to hire someone with my experience.
After much reflection, I took a job as Director of Communications and Special
Projects at the Ecomuseum Zoo for about ¼ of what I had been earning. For me,
it was not about the money, but about putting my efforts into something more
worthwhile than selling the most computers that quarter…
•
I still carried a camera with me everywhere and became passionate about wildlife
photography. I invested in high-end professional equipment and went out
shooting wildlife in all my spare time. I got lots of great feedback on my images,
won a couple of minor awards and then one day I got a call from a friend who
was a wedding photographer. That is the day that everything changed for me.
•
He was looking to bring on new photographers for his business, had seen some
of my work and thought I would be a good fit. Back then, I didn’t really
photograph people. I didn’t even OWN a flash, or know anything about artificial
light, posing, even what happens at a wedding! He insisted that I could do it, so I
bought a flash, went to a wedding with him… and I LOVED it! After a year of
working for my friend part-time, while still working at the Ecomuseum I knew that
my corporate experience would enable me to manage a photography business
on my own, so I left the Ecomuseum, quit my job with my friend and started my
own business.
•
I took workshops with everyone from Freeman Patterson to Jim Zuckerman to
Joe McNally. I joined the Lakeshore Camera Club, Wedding and Portrait
Professionals International (WPPI), the National Association of Photoshop
Professionals (NAPP) and a bunch of online forums and started networking like
crazy. As I gained more experience, I started taking on weddings on my own.
That was 8 years ago. Today I have built a team that includes a makeup artist
and hair stylist, a second photographer and an assistant who is a huge help with
everything from carrying bags to wrangling guests at weddings. I have expanded
into commercial work and my clients include; Amana, AnimaPlus Veterinary
Hospital, Bridalane, Salon de la Mariée, the Lakeshore General Hospital,
Dawson College, the Ecomuseum Zoo, the Canadian Payroll Association, West
Island Community Shares, Hexoskin and Panda Bridge Cruises among others.

My photos have appeared in newspapers, magazines, advertising campaigns,
corporate brochures and even on the side of two mini-vans for the Ecomuseum
Zoo! I have won awards from the Society for the Promotion of Photography in
Quebec (SPPQ), Professional Wedding Photographers of Canada (PWPC),
Photo District News and Wedding Wire.
Other information:
I love what I do. I love my clients – many of whom have become friends along the way. I
make less money than I did in the corporate world, but with the opening of my new
studio last year I am slowly starting to catch up. It’s not easy running my own business.
Competition is fierce and I face new challenges every day. I never know how much
money I will have in the bank, so I have to plan carefully to cover my expenses. I don’t
have stock options, a benefit plan or a company car. I’ve traded the perks of allexpense-paid business trips around the world for the smiles and happy tears on a
client’s face when I deliver their wedding, portrait or newborn collection… and I’m
happier than I have ever been. My only regret is that I did not make this choice 20 years
ago.

Career Path:
• While pursuing a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1999, Clea saw a performance that
would determine her career path. It was Tinka’s New Dress by the celebrated
Canadian Puppeteer Ronnie Burkett and shortly thereafter, she and several
friends created the Puppet Project collective to begin experimenting with the
form. Together, they created two full-length productions, one of which toured to
Fringe Festivals across North America.
•
In 2002 Clea auditioned and was accepted for three years of study at the L’École
Supérieure Nationale des Arts de la Marionnette, located at the International
Institute of Puppetry Arts in Charleville-Mezieres, France. This national
conservatory is unique in the world and accepts only 15 students for study every
three years. Clea is the only English Canadian to have ever studied there,
receiving instruction from many of the world’s most re-known puppetry artists.
•
Upon returning to Canada in 2005, Clea began her professional career, working
in Toronto and France with community arts and theatre companies, and
performing short personal creations in cabarets and festivals in Canada and in
France. In 2007 she was asked by Canadian musician Feist to design and
perform a live shadow show to accompany an 11-month world tour of the album
The Reminder. The tour and Clea’s work is featured in the Feist documentary,
Look at What the Light Did Now which was released in 2011.
•
Since then, Clea’s career has taken on multiple dimensions, she has
collaborated widely across disciplines, bringing the language of contemporary
puppetry to creations in; theatre, film, video art, live music, opera, dance,
commercial events, and community art. Her work is a director, a designer, a
performer, a builder, and more often than not, she occupies two or more of these
positions at the same time.

In 2013, Clea presented her first full-length solo creation The Book of Thel,
directed by Aurlie Hubeau, at Theatre Lachapelle, in the Festival Artdanthé
(2013).

Clea has directed shows for Geordie Theatre (2012); created a performance for
Youtheatre (2010); and in 2015 directed a mainstage production for Concordia
University Theatre Department as Artist-in-residence. She has taught puppetry
and visual composition workshops at Concordia University, Mcgill University, The
University of British Columbia Okanagan; and created productions with youth and
community participants, with Shadowland, Jumblies, and Nunavik Theatre Arts.
•
Clea’s passion for visual performance and interdisciplinary work has led her
down many exciting pathways and she has found inspiration in fellow artists and
communities alike. In 2009 her adventure in puppetry seemed to come full circle
however, when she was awarded the Siminovitch Protégé Prize for Theatre
Design by Prize Laureate and puppeteer, Ronnie Burkett. Clea continues to
work to bring visibility to this old and emerging art form, and will, in 2015 be
founding, at long last, her own creation company.

Career Path:
• Livia took up the trumpet when she was 12 and needed to choose an instrument
to play in the Traf band. At the suggestion of her older sister, she chose the
trumpet, and has been playing for the past 11 years.

While she specializes in jazz studies, she also plays other types of music,
including pop, funk and classical.
•
She played for 2 years with Montreal indie-pop group, Motel Raphaël and with
them, has had many amazing opportunities, including opening for Tegan and
Sara and playing at the Osheaga Festival last summer.
•
Livia has previously played at the Festival International de Jazz de Montréal with
2 jazz big bands.
•
At the moment, Livia plays in a recreational big band and a large jazz ensemble
at Concordia University, where she is a student.
•
She is in the process of completing her Undergraduate degree, after which, she
will pursue a Graduate Certificate in Music Therapy.

Career Path:
• From 2008-2010 Nadeau worked as an independent artist and curator in
Chicago. She produced a DIY film festival, participated in an International
performance art event in Finland, wrote reviews and exhibition texts for other
artists, and maintained a studio art practice making and exhibiting drawings,
paintings, and sound-based installations, while working part-time in a frame
shop.

In 2010 Nadeau moved to Banff, Alberta, to pursue an internship at The Banff
Centre, where she worked on the team of the Walter Phillips Gallery. She worked
in close collaboration with the gallery’s curator and with the visiting artists, to
develop exhibition-related workshops and events for people in the town.

In the summer of 2011, Nadeau was Program Coordinator for The Banff Centre’s
literary arts department, where she organized the logistics for the writers’
residency.

In 2012 Nadeau accepted a short-term engagement at the Foreman Art Gallery
at Bishops University, as the Curator of Education and Cultural Action, where she
worked to develop programming related to a traveling exhibition originating from
the Ottawa Art Gallery.

She joined the team of the Ottawa Art Gallery in May of 2013.
Other information:
Nadeau maintains her practice as an artist and has exhibited her artwork in Canada, the
United States and Europe. She is passionate about education, and instigating
encounters with contemporary art. Nadeau graduated from Trafalgar in 1996.
Karen O'Reilly Chiropractor Biography to follow Lisa Ouaknine (Old Girl, Class of '95) Registered Nurse (RN) Education:
Lisa studied nursing at John Abbott College and has just completed a specialization in
paediatric nursing.
Career path:
Lisa Ouaknine is a nurse educator with experience in pediatric + neonatal intensive care,
postpartum care, maternal/child education, fertility, breastfeeding and lactation. She
currently works for Cells for Life Cord Blood Institute and teaches prenatal classes to
expectant moms. Lisa has both experience in the public and private sectors of health
care and often talks about her experiences to the media.
After an unconventional education and life path, Lisa left her studies that were leading
her to law school to become a nurse.
Lisa has a keen interest in the birthing process, and enjoys guiding new and
experienced moms through this wonderful transition into parenthood. She is also a mom!
Lisa loves the versatility of her profession and is looking forward to answering as many
questions as possible about it. She is also a CPR instructor.
Joanne Palmer (Old Girl, Class of '72)

Career Path:
Joanne Palmer has been with Export Development Canada (EDC), Canada’s export
credit agency, for the majority of her career. Joanne is currently a strategic advisor and
manager in EDC’s Insurance Centre of Expertise, overseeing the team responsible for
developing insurance product standards and customizing specialized insurance
solutions for customers.
Throughout her career at EDC, Joanne has worked in a variety of positions in financing
and insurance, including being responsible for EDC’s political risk insurance program for
nine years. Well-known in the political and credit insurance marketplace, Joanne has
been an active participant in the Berne Union where she has served as Vice-Chair then
Chair of the Investment Insurance Committee and a member of the Management
Committee.

Kristen Tooley (Old Girl, Class of '96) 3D Environment Artist at MPC Montreal Education:

Career Path:
I've been fascinated by movie special effects since I was young. As I was always
artistically minded, but also very much into computers, computer-based animation
seemed like a natural marriage of the two interests. At this point, digital post-production
is everywhere - virtually no film of television show gets aired without the intervention of
VFX, whether it's as obvious as a major effects film, or as subtle as painting something
out of a background the director didn't like.
I've been working in VFX (Visual Effects) at various Montreal companies since 2006. I've
worked on wide variety of projects, including advertisements, TV shows, TV films, and
now major motion pictures. I work mostly in the asset creation side of production; which
is to say I build and texture the 3D objects and environments that get rendered as part of
effects sequences. I've also done some 2D matte painting. I work primarily with
programs like ZBrush, Photoshop, Mari, Softimage, Maya and Nuke, as well as
proprietary company programs.
