RANCHO CORDOVA, CA (MPG) - The
live Nativity performances at
Temple Hill in Rancho Cordova
have finished for this season, but
the 18 half-hour performances
over a period of four nights drew
close to 7,400 visitors. Titled “O
Come Let Us Adore Him,” the
program ran Thursday, Dec. 10th,
through Sunday, Dec. 13th with
performances starting at 6:30 p.m.
and the last showing at 8:00 p.m.
An extra performance was added
on both Saturday and Sunday
nights to accommodate the crowds
attending.
“This live Nativity presentation is our gift to the community,
an expression of our love for Jesus
Christ and a chance to honor Him
by celebrating His birth,” said Dan
Harrison, president of the Folsom
Stake of the Church of Jesus
Christ of Latter-Day Saints, comprised of members in Folsom and
El Dorado Hills. “It is my hope
that families and friends (could)
come together and feel the love
that God has for them.”
The Nativity performances
involved two complete sets of
cast, totaling more than 100 volunteers, and drew nearly twice as
many visitors as expected. Over
the course of the 18 performances,
six different newborn babies made
their acting debut as the baby
Jesus, the central figure of the
event and the season. “Children
watch and wait to see if it’s a real
baby,” said Heather McCauley,
who organized the double cast
for the event. “We call it a ‘live
Nativity’ because we want to take
people to that moment, to feel like
they are a part of that scene in
Bethlehem.”
The event took place at the

is ranked 13th out of the 50 public and private high
schools in the Sacramento region where students are
most likely to earn admission into a University of
California school, according to a recent report by the
Sacramento Business Journal.
The business publication ranked schools by the
percentage of applicants offered admission to a UC
school in the fall of 2014. Cordova High’s admission
rate was 73.2 percent.
Earlier this year,
Cordova High—in
addition to Vista del

one of the state’s Best

in the Cordova Recreation and Park
District (CRPD) are highly satisfied with
the condition of local parks, according
to a recently commissioned independent
survey. The survey was conducted Sept.
12th through Sept. 17th, 2015 by the
opinion research firm EMC Research.
Respondents were overwhelmingly
pleased with the quality of local parks
with 74 percent of respondents rating
them as either “excellent” or “good.”
Also, 74 percent of respondents rated
the job CRPD is doing as either “excellent” or “good.”
“The Cordova Recreation and Park
District prides itself in providing quality parks and recreation programs to the
community,” said CRPD Administrator
James Rodems. “We are pleased residents are happy with the overall quality
of the parks we provide.”
The survey also showed that residents
are somewhat concerned about safety
at local parks with only 54 percent rating “the safety
of local parks”
as “excellent”
or “good.”
Additionally,
over 80 percent
of respondents
rated “maintain clean and

equipment,”
Cordova Recreation & Park
“improve park District
security with
additional
patrols and safety lighting,” and “reduce
homelessness and drug use in our
parks,” as either “very” or “somewhat”
important priorities.
“Safety has always been a priority in
our parks,” said Rodems. “The truth is,
while our parks are properly maintained,
we do have significant infrastructure
needs. We want to improve park safety
at all of our parks by adding safety lighting, installing security cameras, and
increasing park security patrols.”
“Children must feel safe and be safe
in our parks,” added Rodems. “Parks
and the programs they provide are
important in keeping local children and
youth safe and out of trouble when they
are not in school.”
The survey also revealed residents
were interested in providing local
funds to maintain quality parks, senior
services and afterschool youth programs. Approximately two-thirds of
likely November 2016 voters indicated they were interested in providing
local funding for parks and recreation.
Additionally, after hearing information
about local park and recreation needs,
75 percent indicated they would be
interested in providing local funding.

by Sal Arrigo, Jr.
RANCHO CORDOVA, CA (MPG) - On
Wednesday, Dec. 9th, members
of a collaborative effort between
the Sacramento Municipal
Utility District (SMUD), the
City of Rancho Cordova, and
the Respite Club at the Cordova
Neighborhood Church gathered
to celebrate the dedication of a
Memory Garden.
The Building Leadership Talent
group, representing SMUD, was
at the forefront and the driving factor in turning the garden
into reality. Ron Lehman, senior
business technology analyst with
SMUD, described the day as
“phenomenal.”
The Club is a drop-in program
providing respite for caregivers
and socialization for stroke victims and seniors with memory
loss. It is designed to give caregivers much needed time for
themselves. For the participants,
it is a social time in a safe, loving environment. The Club is
open Mondays, Tuesdays, and
Wednesdays from 9:30 a.m. to
2:30 p.m. and is working on
being open on Thursdays. Pastor
Mike Mitchum of the Cordova
Neighborhood Church was
instrumental in providing the
facility for the Club when first
approached about it more than 20
years ago.
When the garden project was
first suggested to SMUD “all we
were looking for ways to build
a fence around the patio,” said
Rebecca Graulich, marketing
director for the Respite Club. The
enclosed area would then allow the
people suffering from dementia to
enjoy the outdoors while preventing them from wandering away.
From this humble idea came
Benefits of the Memory Garden may include helping people with

improving one’s own mind and body.
a much grander plan and, in the
words of Ron Lehman, “It was
amazing to see what has been
accomplished from our original
goals.”
In fact, this is the biggest
amount of money SMUD has
raised in support of a single
cause, totaling over $100,000.
The SMUD Leadership Talent
team has always supported children’s organizations, but after
many conversations with the
Respite Club’s directors, they
realized it was time to support other community needs.
Lehman and his leadership team
of 14 men and women from
SMUD support the Sacramento
region with various projects as
their way of enhancing the community and making a positive
impact on individuals. In addition to the Memory Garden, the
Alzheimer’s Association and the
Asian Community Center have
also received support.
As far as the Memory Garden
itself, April Kangas, strategic
planner and project manager at
SMUD, explained that horticultural therapy plays an important
role because “certain plants may
jog memories of familiarity.”
There are azaleas, rhododendrons,
and many more. Additional benefits of the garden may include
helping people with dementia
reminisce and encouraging social
interaction as well as improving
one’s own mind and body.
The Memory Garden is
designed to be low maintenance
and accessible to those who are
in wheelchairs so that everyone
can participate in keeping the garden looking spectacular. In the
springtime, the participants of
the Respite Club will be growing
their own vegetables.
The impact of the dedication
ceremony went well beyond the
Memory Garden. Some employees of SMUD shared that they,
too, are dealing with, or have
dealt with, dementia in their
own families. They realize the
importance of caregivers “getting a needed break” to manage
their own lives. As the ceremony
concluded, it was clear that the
contributions from the SMUD
team, the City of Rancho
Cordova, and invited guests
will make a positive impact on
families they will never meet.
Everyone left the Memory
Garden with smiles.
If you would like to volunteer or
contribute financially to the program, contact Program Director
Flora Maloney for more information at (916) 635-5147. H

RT Holiday Bus Tradition Continues
Pondering Christmas, and
All That Comes With It
Well, there has been the bloodless
mayoral change in the City of Rancho
Cordova again and your new mayor is
David Sander. I think most of the citizens in Rancho Cordova already know
that, but there are usually a few people who were on vacation, or working,
or missed the paper, or whatever, and
to them I pass on the “breaking news.”
That’s not really being sarcastic, but it
does seem to be rather odd that almost all
“news” you see on T.V. is breaking something, so I decided to break the news too.
And another thing, I’m still on the City
Council in case you were wondering.
What has the year 2015 meant to you?
Did it bring you a new job, or graduation,
or new member of the family, or a new
home? Did you write a poem, or compose
a new song? Maybe you wrote a letter
(by hand—not an email) to someone who
needed to hear from you, or perchance
you received the letter. When some of our
kids were in the service (the Air Force), I
probably wrote more letters than I have
since. But that’s OK because I know
On the 14th of November, RT employees and their
families celebrated the start of the holiday season by
taking part in RT’s Annual Holiday Bus Painting Party.

Story by Rick Sloan
In 1994 the marketing staff of Regional Transit
(RT) asked me if I could design and carry out the
completion of an RT Holiday Bus. Being the energetic young artist that I was, I said “sure.” Little
did I realize at that time that this artistic endeavor
would be asked upon me for the next 21 years.
In November of this year, I completed my 22nd
RT Holiday Bus. On the 14th of November, RT
employees and their families celebrated the start of
the holiday season by taking part in RT’s Annual
Holiday Bus Painting Party. This year more than
80 RT artists used a “paint-by-numbers” technique
to bring the decorative 40-foot bus to life.
In 2012 I retired from RT, where I spent 23 years
as a part of the creative force that made up the RT
marketing department. Every November since, RT
has hired me back in order to keep the tradition
alive. During
this month I
help supervise
and apply my
talents guiding participants
in painting the
candy canes,
snowmen,
teddy bears,
poinsettias,

entire bus. Even
though this was the 22nd RT Holiday Bus I created, I approached it with the same enthusiasm as
the first.
I’m so appreciative to RT for continuing this
And Another Thing ...
of snow more or less. And another thing,
I hope it keeps piling up all winter. It
would be nice to see Lake Tahoe, Donner
Lake, and all the rest of the lakes and our
reservoirs full again.
There seem to be more people working
now than there have been for a while, and
I know that an unknown number of them
are working because of the holidays, but
I am glad the jobs are there. Granted we
still see some homeless people around,
but I read somewhere “the poor you have
always with you...” and that seems to be
very valid. Many are homeless because of
circumstances and a few are homeless by
choice. I hope the economy will improve,
and some employers will be hiring those
who are searching for and finding wellpaying jobs this coming year.
I will be working on next week’s column this week, because the paper will
be out earlier. At least I’m guessing it
will be out early on Christmas week so
those who can enjoy Christmas will be
able to. And another thing, if you miss
next week’s paper, I am wishing an early
“Merry Christmas and a Happy New
Year” to everyone.

Mcgarvey, God bless, and see you
next time. H

great experience. This event has evolved into a tradition that includes family and friends. It’s been a
pleasure to see how my own family and the children of RT employees have grown in the last 22
years. The kids and parents that take part in this
special event really feel a great sense of pride
when they witness the bus driving down the road
like a giant greeting card.
The Holiday Bus serves as a way to thank passengers who use the RT system and to give back to
the community as a whole. Free to passengers, the
Holiday Bus will be operating on different routes
in the Sacramento region through Jan. 3rd, 2016.
The schedule can be found by visiting www.sacrt.

listen to festive holiday music and view on display
several holiday themed posters painted by some of
the younger children.
In lieu of fare, monetary donations and nonperishable food items will be collected on the
bus to benefit the River City Food Bank, a nonprofit organization that provides emergency food
and housing assistance in Sacramento County. For

H
when I was in the Air Force receiving a
letter meant a lot, especially when you are
far away from home. That’s something to
think about, you know, especially at this
time of the year, and you may be thinking of your own Christmas story. I grew
up in Indiana, but I don’t remember any
of the kids I knew freezing their tongue to
a pole at school like they did in the movie
“A Christmas Story.”
Many people who are native
Californians think of playing in the
snow as getting in your car, driving to
the Sierra, and playing in the snow. Then
when you are done, you get back in your
car and drive back to Sacramento Valley
(or whatever valley) and look at the
snow from a distance. I have to admit
that doing that is easier than opening
the door of your home, getting the snow
shovel, and cleaning the ice and snow
off the sidewalk and around your house.
The weather this year is almost a reverse
of what it was last year in the continental U.S. This year, the eastern two thirds
of the country is much warmer than normal (whatever normal is), and the western
third is colder than last year. I know we
really need the rain and snow and cold
temperatures so the snow doesn’t melt.

A funny thing is happening on the
way to the GOP meltdown.
According to the latest Quinnipiac
poll, the two most popular and
broadly acceptable candidates in the
field are perhaps the most talented
and most reliably conservative. Oh,
and by the way, they are Hispanics
in their 40s.
Donald Trump is still leading the
polls and has demonstrated a staying
power that has confounded his critics,
but Marco Rubio and Ted Cruz are
now beginning to stand out in the
rest of the field, clustering with Ben
Carson in effectively a three-way tie
for second place nationally.
According to the latest Quinnipiac
poll, Rubio and Cruz have the
highest net favorable ratings in the
race at 58 percent and 56 percent,
respectively. Only 5 percent of
They both have thought about
running for president for a very
long time. They both paid their
dues -- Cruz in the George W. Bush
campaign and administration; Rubio
in the Florida House. They both
serve in a body, the U.S. Senate, that
practically exists as a steppingstone
to the White House. They both look,
talk and act like politicians -- because
they are politicians, and good ones.
If the race eventually winnows down
to a Rubio-Cruz fight, it will feature
supremely skilled campaigners who
are eloquent and sure-footed and
represent the best next-generation
politicians the party has to offer. A
Cruz-Rubio race would play as grass
roots vs. the establishment, although
Rubio in the establishment slot
would be an enormous victory for the
tea party, which over the years has
backed some flagrantly unsuitable
candidates.
There are doubts about both of
them. Is Cruz electable? Can Rubio
be trusted on immigration? Does
Cruz lack a winning personal touch?
Is Rubio too youthful-looking? And
Donald Trump can’t be wished away.
If Trump wins Iowa, it will indeed
be like the First Bull Run of the
Republican civil war. Regardless,
the race is still highly unpredictable,
and the last couple of weeks before
Iowa and New Hampshire always
bring surprises.
But Republicans hyperventilating
over Trump should pause long
enough to appreciate the steady rise
of two conservative 40-somethings
who represent the party’s future.

Cruz vs. Rubio -A Better GOP Race
Unlike with Trump or Carson,
explaining the emergence of Rubio
and Cruz doesn’t require figuring out
why the laws of political gravity have
been suspended or psychoanalyzing
GOP voters. They are advancing in a
completely typical track.
There is no doubt that the two are
now positioned differently. From the
beginning of his Senate career, Cruz
has focused on bonding with the
grass roots of the party, while Rubio
sponsored a misbegotten immigration
bill that hasn’t been forgotten or
forgiven by conservatives. Cruz is
working from the right of the party out
(he’s strongest among self-identified
very conservative voters), and Rubio
is working from the center of the
party out (he’s strongest among selfidentified somewhat conservatives).

Republicans say they wouldn’t
consider voting for Rubio, and 6
percent say that of Cruz, the lowest

The answer is: It’s complicated,
and no one is entirely sure. A
recent study, for example, found
that cats have some genes that
are more commonly possessed
This research opens a new avenue into understanding why
cats are more picky about their
food than dogs -- also meat-eaters -- tend to be. If cats are detecting a bitter taste in their food
then they may be less inclined
to eat it. And, a bitter taste also
may trigger a vomiting response
to safeguard against ingesting
what is perceived to be poison.
In the meantime, feeding a finicky cat remains a trial-and-error process. Try small amounts
of different foods -- dry, wet and
fresh -- and note Trudy’s likes
and dislikes.

“In 2016 we will need to think
more about how to accommodate the large crowds,” said
Eric King, spokesman for the
Folsom/El Dorado Hills area
of the LDS Church. “We were
hoping for about 4,000 during
our first year, but it has become
obvious that many people are
looking for ways to bring Christ
to the forefront of Christmas and
a live Nativity is a great way to
do that.”

Everyone seems to be rushing,
so many things to do. Will it all
be ready in time?
After having experienced
many Christmas seasons, I
sometimes wonder if we have
lost the true spirit of the season with the seemingly constant
shuffle of shopping, cooking, gift wrapping, and on and
on. Friends, neighbors, family
members, and complete strangers are making an effort to be
nice. That is a good thing, of
course, but shouldn’t we try to
be nice all year long?
Perhaps if we keep busy, it
will make it easier not to think
of “the stuff” that requires
real effort and for a longer
time. Here come some suggestions that could apply to all of
us. And, yes, I am including
myself.
Forget about dieting. Instead,
take food to a homeless shelter.
Want to go shopping? OK.
The Salvation Army could use
some new clothes, like the ones
you are about to discard.
On your way to the beauty
salon for your stylish haircut,
get some toiletries and simple beauty supplies for the
abused Women’s Center in your
community.
Going to lunch with a friend?
Include someone from the skill
senior facility near you. Or, better yet, bring treats to the center
and share them with some of
the senior residents who seldom
have company from the outside.
How about a visit to a hospital? Oh, that might be
depressing, you tell yourself.
Try it once. You could be giving
someone a nice break.
Let our veterans know you
appreciate their sacrifice and listen to their war stories. We owe
them so much. Plus, it could be
fun!
And speaking of fun, try reading stories to small children.

Whether at a pediatric unit of
a hospital or at a public library
in your community, it is guaranteed that you’ll love it!
If you qualify, have you
looked into being a foster parent, or a big sister or brother to a
not-so-small kid?
Take the time to listen to
someone. Really listen. It is a
wonder that the most joyous
season of the year is also the
time when most suicides take
place, especially among young
adults. It is also the time when
depression tends to increase.
Just thinking of all the loved
ones that are no longer with us
will make us nostalgic. Talking
with someone may make it
easier.

some New Year’s resolutions

at the auction, you are or may be responsible for
paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned
off, before you can receive clear title to the property.
You are encouraged to investigate the existence,
priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist
on this property by contacting the county recorder’s
office or a title insurance company, either of which may
charge you a fee for this information. If you consult
either of these resources, you should be aware that

quarter of scoring made the difference for the Cordova High
School boys’ basketball team
in Tuesday’s home non-league
game against Vista del Lago.
The end result: Lancers fell
101-91 to the Eagles. Trailing
26-19 after the first quarter,
Cordova (3-5) looked to get back
into the contest. But the Eagles
soared to a 36-9 advantage that
led to a 62-38 halftime lead.
In the second half, the Lancers
rallied as they outscored Vista
del Lago, 65-39. Additional
results of the game were not
available at press time.
In the second and final game
of River City’s Rumble on the
River Tournament, the Lady
Lancers led 10-6 after the first
quarter. But in the second, the
Lady Raiders went on a 21-11
for a 28-21 halftime lead. River
City outscored Cordova, 25-19,
in the second half for the win.
Two Lady Lancers scored
in double figures: guard Erika
Wilson had 12 points and
Kelsie Graf 11. Jullissa Reis
followed with seven points and
Nikki Jones and Annalise Tate
had two points each.
Cordova had 34 rebounds in
Four games into the season,
the Cordova High School girls’
basketball team has yet to play
a home game.
Making the journey to Yuba
City, the Lady Lancers fell to
River Valley, 52-39. After falling behind 19-9 in the first
quarter, Cordova (2-3) rallied in the second, 14-13, to
trim the Falcons’ lead to 42-33
at halftime. But in the second
half, River Valley outscored its
visitors, 19-17, for the win.

In the final game of the
McDonald’s Classic at Edison High

and Tigers were tied at 58-58 after
four quarters. But in overtime,
Cordova raced past Tokay with an
11-6 run to post the win over Lodi’s
second high school.

Mabel had been reminded several times by that staff that
morning that the kids were coming over, this being necessary as
Mabel’s memory isn’t what it
used to be. And she put a sprig
of imitation holly in her hair and
tied a red ribbon on the other
side.
The little girl smiled and
walked over to Mabel.
“Are you a grandma?” she
asked.
“Why, yes dear, I am.”
“I brought you a present,
Grandma,” she said, handing a
box to Mabel. Mabel opened it
and was delighted at the sandalwood-scented hankies inside.
“Why thank you so much,
Honey!” she said. “And what is
your name?”
“I’m Candice. I’m four.”

On Dec. 11th, also at the tourney, Cordova, which was tied
8-8 with Franklin after the first
quarter, erupted for 28 points in
the second quarter for a 36-26
halftime lead.
In the third quarter, the
Yellowjackets outscored the
Lancers, 24-15 that trimmed
the Lancers’ lead to 51-50.
But Cordova put a folk in the
Stockton school in the fourth
quarter with a 30-12 advantage
for the win.
Cordova had four players who
scored in double figures: DeAnte
Wilkins led the way with 17
points; Damion Baldwin and Jason
Novik followed with 13 points
each; and Najee Clark had 12.
Three Lancers scored five
points each: Angel Garcia joined

Wilkins and Clark had nine
points each for Cordova, which
were burned by the Flames in the
first quarter, 23-13, in its second
game of the tourney on Dec. 10th.
Other Lancers who scored in
the game were Moore with six
points each and Devin Baldwin,
Slavik Demchyk, Garcia and
Mike Brown had five points each.

In the tournament opener
on Dec. 9th, Chavez, also a
Stockton school, outscored
the Lancers, 27-18, in the first
quarter that led to the win.
Leading Cordova scorers were
Novik with nine points, Damion
Baldwin seven, Demchyk six,
Wilkins and Danielyan five each,

and Sacramento high schools.
The Lancers play Valley of
Sacramento to start the tourney,
which runs through Dec. 23rd.
Then on Monday, Dec. 28th,
Cordova will host its 40th

END BENCH
OF
THE
“Go! Bears!” “Go! Gaels!”
As the two college hoop teams
were warming up for the first meeting between the schools in eleven
years, one fan turned to the other and
offered, “This is the McDonald’s
All-American Team against the
Australian National Team.” No
joke, because it wasn’t that far from
the truth.
When the California Golden
Bears hosted the Saint Mary’s
Gaels Saturday afternoon it was the
first time since 2004 that the teams
clashed on the hardwood. What
have they been waiting for?
Cal, with three McDonald’s
All-Americans among its top six
players, edged SMC, that has six
Australian players on its roster,
63-59, before a really-into-it crowd
of around 10,000 at Haas Pavilion in
Berkeley. The decider was a missed
free throw with 1.7 seconds left.
The high-energy, see-saw competition for East Bay bragging
rights was just the thing to stir up
some more excitement and interest in college hoops. Where has
this been? It’s a much more attractive draw than watching the Bears
destroy Rice, Sam Houston State
or Incarnate Word (?), or the Gaels
doing the same to Manhattan or
CSU-Bakersfield.
Saint Mary’s brought a strong
contingent of fans from 14 miles
away through the tunnel for brunch
and basketball. The Gaels are a worthy opponent for the area’s Pac-12
programs, Cal and Stanford. The
Cardinal, though, may be regretting
a 78-61 loss at McKeon Pavilion in
Moraga, Nov. 22, on national television. That was the first time those
two met since 2002.
In his 14 years at SMC, coach
Randy Bennett has built and maintained a solid program and a West
Coast Conference power, with the
help of his Australian player pipeline. He has led the Gaels to nine
postseason appearances (five
NCAA, four NIT). The Bears and
Cardinal should make a date against
Saint Mary’s an annual event.
There’s nothing to fear, renewed
rivalries and considerable financial
gains are here.
Cal, mistakenly ranked as high as
the game, with Wilson grabbing about one-third of the
boards at 10 that included
seven defensive. Leila Cooper
pulled down nine, Reis six and
Kelsie Graf five. Wilson and
Graf had five steals each.
Ye s t e r d a y, T h u r s d a y,
Cordova started action at the
Liberty Ranch Tournament
in Galt that runs through
Saturday.
Next Monday, the Lady
Lancers continue their road
adventures at Kimball of
Tracy. Then on Tuesday play at
H
Placer.
River City 52, Cordova 40
By Mike Bush
14th in preseason polls on the basis
of its two highly-touted recruits --freshmen starters and McDonald’s
stars Jaylen Brown (Marietta, Ga.)
and Ivan Rabb (Bishop O’Dowd,
Oakland) --- was a heavy favorite for Saturday’s game. Young
and still meshing into a team, the
Bears, 7-2 going in, had come back
to earth and dropped out of the top
25 after losses to San Diego State
and Richmond at the Las Vegas
Invitational. St. Mary’s was 6-0, all
home victories.
As the game progressed, and with
an allegiance to one team and an
affinity for the other, the two fans,
one a Cal grad, the other an SMC
alum, found themselves applauding
and cheering the good plays by both
teams and bemoaning the bad plays
by both. Quite the deal.
Behind the shooting of junior
guard Jordan Mathews, who scored
all of his 13 points in the first half,
and the all-around inside play of the
6’ 11” Rabb, the Bears took the lead
at the seven-minute mark, pulled
away to a 37-26 margin at the break
and appeared to have a handle on the
game.
But the Gaels, who lost all five
starters from last season, overcame
a size disadvantage with some hot
shooting early in the second half,
while the Bears hit a cold spell.
SMC, the nation’s No. 1 field goal
percentage shooting team entering
the game (54.5), connected on five
3-pointers in the first eight minutes
of the period and took a 49-44 lead
to complete a 23-7 run. Watching
the TV replay two days later, that’s
the point that prompted analyst and
Hall of Famer Bill Walton to call
out, “Australia, standing tall on
American soil!”
During the rally the Saint Mary’s
fans began a chant of “Go! Gaels!”
Cal mascot Oski the Bear responded
to lead the classic side-to-side “Go!
Bears!” cheers. Good stuff.
St. Mary’s leading scorer Emmett
Naar’s (16.5 ppg) three to take the
lead was his only score of the game,
though he did have eight assists.
Cal’s top scorer, senior point guard
Tyrone Wallace (18.4) was just
2-for-12 with seven points. Dane
BY
GERRY SCHOLL
Pineau rallied from a slow start
to help the SMC comeback with
a strong double-double (10 pts.,
15 rebounds), along with center
Evan Fitner (15) and point guard
Joe Rahon, who was impressive
throughout (14 pts., 5 reb., 4 assists).
With the ultimate climax at hand,
one bro said to the other, “Since one
team has to lose this thing, I’m glad
they’ll lose it to the other.” That’s
terrific.
Rahon drove for a lay-up and a
59-58 SMC lead with 1:46 to go.
That score remained until Cal was to
inbound in the closing seconds. The
two fans debated Cal’s options and
thought the ball should go to Rabb,
who was dominant inside the whole
game (15 pts., 11 reb., four blocks).
On TV, Walton suggested they
should “take the first good shot.”
The ball was swung around to the
third McDonald’s All-American,
Jabari Bird (2013) on the right wing.
Having hit a pair of threes from the
same spot earlier, Bird (13 pts.) let
another one fly quickly and hit it
clean for the lead, 61-59, with 15
seconds on the clock. During a wild
scramble for a loose ball at the other
end, Wallace was called for a foul
with only 1.7 remaining. Rahon,
the Gaels’ floor leader throughout
the second-half comeback, missed
the first free throw of a one-and-one
situation. Brown rebounded for Cal
and hit two foul shots at 0.5 to end
it.
Afterward, the two fans agreed
they were both hoping Rahon
would make both shots and set up
five more minutes of wild overtime
hoops.
On the air, Walton, the Great
Exaggerator Extraordinaire,
described the scene at Haas as
“the basketball center of the universe!” He later added, “This day
will go down in the history of the
glory and the heartbeat of intercollegiate men’s basketball in the San
Francisco Bay Area!”
Not so sure about all of that, but
would certainly agree with Walton’s
summation: “This has been an outstanding day!” Let’s do it every
H
year.
Mabel Adams was sitting in

Life retirement home when the

“Well, Candice, merry
Christmas to you. Have you
been here before?”
“Well … no, I guess. Mom
said this is where the grandmas
are and we can have fun bringing
presents to the grandmas.”
“I see,” Mabel said. “Well,
Candice, come over here, dear
and let me give you a hug.
There!”
Sometimes, it isn’t the cost
of the hankies, or the fun wrapping them up. Sometimes it’s
just a child’s smile and a small
taste of love that makes us treasure Christmas.

Join the Baby Basket Drive
Donations Needed for New Moms at Sacramento Life Center
SACRAMENTO REGION, CA (MPG)
- As local women and teens spend
A Sacramento Life Center client
receives a baby basket shortly
before giving birth in early 2015.
The center is running its annual
Baby Basket Drive this month. Photo
courtesy Sacramento Life Center
the holidays preparing to become
new moms in the coming year, the
Sacramento Life Center is holding its annual Baby Basket Drive
through Dec. 31st so it can continue
to provide a basket of needed items
to every patient who gives birth
in 2016. Donations can be made
online at www.saclife.org. Gifts
can be made in any increment, but
a donation of $50 buys one basket,
which includes formula, diapers,
newborn clothes, pacifiers, and
more.
“Our patients may come in for
a pregnancy test, but they leave
with a strong support system and
resources,” said Marie Leatherby,
executive director. “We want to
encourage women and teen girls
and their partners that they are
capable of caring for a child, and
we understand the hurdles that they
often face—sometimes as simple
as wondering if they will be able
to afford diapers. These baby baskets give new moms a boost of
confidence and needed supplies.”
The Sacramento Life Center’s
mission is to offer compassion,
support, resources, and free medical care to women and couples
facing an unplanned or unsupported pregnancy. The Sacramento
Life Center’s licensed Sac Valley
Pregnancy Clinic includes a primary clinic and two Mobile
Medical Clinics that provide all services for free, including pregnancy
tests, STD tests, ultrasounds, peer
counseling for men and women,
education, and resource referrals.
The nonprofit also offers a schoolbased teen education program, a
24-hour hotline and a program
for women seeking support after
having an abortion. For more information about the Sacramento Life
Center’s Sac Valley Pregnancy
Clinic, visit www.svpclinic.com.
For more information about the
Sacramento Life Center or to make
a donation, visit www.saclife.org.

Water-Wise Tips for the Holidays
CARMICHAEL, CA (MPG) - What’s
the best way to conserve water
this holiday season? Consider
these tips from Sacramento
Suburban Water District.
They’re easy and can help
make a big difference in reducing water use over the winter
months.
1) Let Your Sprinklers
Have a Holiday
Turn off your sprinklers this
winter season and leave them
off until spring. With winter’s
cooler and shorter days, as
well as the anticipated rains,
your yard won’t need much or
any supplemental watering.
2) Help Your Guests Conserve
Will you have a houseful of
guests this holiday season?
Create a five-minute reel of
holiday music they can play
while in the shower. When
the music ends, the shower
should, too.
Some holiday themed songs
to consider for your playlist: Frosty the Snowman,
Jingle Bell Rock, Santa Baby,
White Christmas, Winter
Wonderland, and Grandma
Got Run Over by a Reindeer
are all under five minutes
long.
You can also put a friendly,
little note on the mirror
reminding them to turn off
the water when brushing their
teeth or shaving.
3) Scrape the Plates
Serving up a big holiday
meal? Clean off dirty plates by
scraping food into the trash or
compost bin instead of using
the garbage disposal.
And remember to put your
dishwasher to good use.
Every minute the kitchen faucet runs sends 2.5 gallons of
water down the drain. Instead
of washing dishes by hand,
use your dishwasher instead.
You’ll have more time for
wrapping presents or enjoying
a glass of eggnog.
4) Collect Water from the
Shower or Sink
The water you collect can
be used to provide water for
Fido, or to make sure your
trees and plants stay green.
SSWD has handy shower
buckets available.
5) Give the Gift of Water
Conservation
Looking for the perfect gift for
that special someone in your
life? Consider giving them
a high-efficiency showerhead, water-efficient toilet or
weather-based irrigation controller. Look for products with
the WaterSense label, which
are certified to be high-performing and water-efficient.
