November 2015 - The Club at Sonterra
Page 2 Council Corner Message From the BoardRon Botello, Board Chairman Well it appears that summer might actually be over and cooler temperatures are upon us. Hopefully when you read this we’ve had some rain because it’s in the forecast the next few days. One of our major events, Spooktacular, was scheduled for October 30th and has always been a huge success. I hope some of our families were able to participate. The officers of the Board of Governors were conducted on Tuesday, October 13. I was nominated and elected to serve another term as your Chairman. I want to thank the board members for their trust and confidence, I will do all in my power to ensure I do all I can to continue to do what I can to make our club the best in San Antonio. Yes we still have some outstanding issues, but that will always be the case. We will address those that are easy fixes, and tackle the tougher ones one at a time. I want to congratulate the following staff members that received financial assistance from the Sonterra Scholarship Fund: Carlos Urbina, Joe Contreras, Emily Ponce, and Farid Abdous. We wish them the best of luck as they pursue their studies. I also want to thank the members that contributed to this fund. Thanksgiving will soon be upon us and I want to wish safe passage to all the students that will be coming home to be with their families, or those that may be traveling to be with loved ones. Drop by the Club for breakfast or lunch if you can and enjoy our excellent Thanksgiving offering and keep mom out of the kitchen. Your club has much to offer, please make every effort to utilize what is made available. Message From the Ambassador Council Jerry and Becky Edler Message from the General Manager Bryant Early It’s hard to believe I’ve already been here for a month and a half. I’ve had the pleasure of meeting many Members in the first 45 days and I’m looking forward to getting a chance to know all of you in the months to come. As you can imagine, much of my time have been spent getting to know Sonterra. The staff has been and continues to be amazing. Their desire to service the Members is obvious, but what I bring to the table is the knowledge and the skill set to take us to the next level. You may have already started noticing the subtle changes around the club. Our goal is to begin focusing on the small but impactful details around the club. I’ve received a tremendous amount of input from a plethora of individuals and although there are some issues more pressing than others, I can assure you all that I am working on getting a handle on all things Sonterra. In addition to focusing on the service provided by the clubs personnel, we have also begun looking at our infrastructure in all outlets. The most noticeable is the golf course. As a result of an unfortunate chain of events, we decided it was necessary to overseed the North course, something that has not been done in years past. By doing this we can almost guarantee the course will be in fantastic shape heading into winter. As you may have seen from Donny’s “Messages from the Superintendent”, it’s important that we continue to communicate with you all, especially as it pertains to the golf courses and tennis courts. That being said, there is much to be done. My course of action is pretty straight forward, and that is to begin chipping away at those impactful items here at the club. Some items can be handled almost immediately while others will take time and planning. Nonetheless, we will address the issues. Finally, with almost two thousand Members, it’s our mission to continue to meet and exceed your expectations, and if there is one thing I’ve learned in my 23 years in this business, that is this cannot be accomplished without your input. This is critical if we are to be successful as a club. Will we fall short of meeting your expectations at times? It’s almost guaranteed we will, but with your continuous input we can continue to grow as a club as we strive to be what we need to be for you, as I realize different Members expect different things. I cannot express enough how excited I am to be your new General Manager and I’m so looking forward to us working together as we make Sonterra “The” premier club in San Antonio. Until next time, Bryant Hello from the Ambassador Council! Becky and I want to give you some info that is floating around in everyone’s mailbox! The new Gift of the Greens Certificate that you can give to one of your friends! It is a $3500 Clubhouse Credit towards their initiation fee to one of your closest friends. What better gift to give, enjoying time together at our Club! Our two courses are going to be beautiful since the over seeding along with all of this rain will make it plush! With the recent rain all of our ponds will be full of water and the waterfalls will be beautiful. While we are on improvements, let me mention our new General Manager Bryant Early! He has become a visible part of our club. If you are in the 19th hole, Member Lounge or in the Pro Shop you will see him shaking hands, asking how things are going, and really listening! Thank you management, as this makes our Club a friendlier club for our visitors and new members, it’s fun to show off our great club. I want to say we have the best members in any club in San Antonio. Thank you for your friendship and membership, Becky and Jerry Edler Page 3 Upcoming Events Page 4 Sonterra Clubs Within a Club Well fall is here and the holidays are just around the corner. Page 5 Catering / SWA Page 6 Golf Corner On the Greens - Donny Latham, Golf Course Superintendent The golf courses have responded well to the recent rains, fertilizer applications and of course the overseeding. We are cutting greens daily on the south course overseed and these greens continue to get better and better. The speeds of the greens will also continue to increase as we get into the cooler months. Thank you all for your patience. As I have mentioned to several members, these overseeded greens are what we play golf on for over 7 months of the year, so rushing to lower the height of cut and set ourselves back is something that is not in our best interest. We will also be cutting our collars and approaches 3-4 days a week to allow these areas to be receptive of shots that release and bounce up on the green. This is the way the architect intended this course to be played and we do not want to change that. The North course fairways are continuing to improve. As our rye grass begins to mature it will become a much better playing surface. We will apply foliar fertilizers and growth regulators all winter season to provide you with an outstanding surface. The short week of Cart Path Only will have been worth it. The driving range was seeded on October 26th. This area still has some growing in to do, but it is already starting to look greener. We applied new sand to our target green bunkers and I hope you will all enjoy your newly improved practice area. Not only do I want to provide you with a great practice area, I want an area that we can all be proud of as you look out onto the golf courses from the clubhouse. Thank you ALL for being members. Golf News - Jeff Hunter, Director of Golf November! WOW! Hard to believe we have gone through the summer months so quickly. Christmas is already in full swing at the department stores, Thanksgiving dinners are being planned and kids are making their plans to come home from school. With everything going on it is easy to forget that both golf courses will have some of the best playing conditions all year, the weather will be great and we all need to spend some time outdoors. Our overseeding should be really popping by the time you read this and we as a staff are very excited about playing conditions this winter. Come out and enjoy the golf courses and get away from those crazy holiday schedules. Our men's golf association has wrapped up a very successful year and we would like to thank all those that played and participated in these events. The season culminates with the Sonterra Cup being played November 14 and 15. Forty four men have qualified for this Ryder Cup styled event and may the best team win. The SWGA is also winding down a great year. Participation has been up and the year has been both fun and competitive. Ace of the Year and Star of the Year will be decided just after this publication and the year wraps up with the Holiday Luncheon December 9. CHRISTMAS SALE!! Our annual Christmas sale will be held December 4 from 6PM to 9PM. Come to the golf shop and enjoy the free wine and cheese, spin the wheel for extra discounts and enjoy the free gift wrapping. Everything must go and we will have hourly specials announced that night. Don't miss our shopping tradition. SPEND THOSE CREDITS or lose them. We will close doors at 5pm then reopen at 6. Winter golf requires a little different thinking. Don't forget that when the temps are below 60 your muscles are not as flexible, the golf balls go a little shorter, so take a little more club and swing with tempo! **Fairway Feats** Ed Risner A Great Season! The chase for the Sonterra Cup is a yearlong event, culminating in the Sonterra Cup tournament. This year the top 40 on the MGA Money List, with 4 extra qualifiers will square off against each other November 14 & 15. We are looking forward to a hotly contested competition. **October MGA Tournament** Our October tournament was called the President’s Choice because our President got to pick the format for the event. This year, for the first time ever, the tournament consisted of two 18-hole rounds of par 3 golf on the North course. Although a few teams had to play the last couple of holes “by flashlight”, a great time was had by all at the event and the follow-on buffet for participants and spouses/significant others. Congratulations to the winning teams for each flight: First Flight: Heath, Caskey, Naranjo Second Flight: Dugas, Simpson, Keaton Third Flight: Dillree, Gardner, Wadsworth Page 8 Golf Corner te a d p U m a e T Junior Golf Due to the remnants of Hurricane Patricia the Junior Inter-Club event on Saturday, October 24th at River Crossing was cancelled and rescheduled for Saturday, November 14th. The result: Many gain a substantial amount of weight during the holidays. Researchers discovered that 51% of annual weight gain occurs during the holiday season. Holiday weight gain is usually not lost during the spring or summer months, so the best fitness strategy is to avoid gaining in the first place. Avoiding Temptations. Are you really hungry? Or are you just craving what is before you? Don't just eat for the sake of eating. Don't skip meals. Make time for a light breakfast and lunch and avoid over-consuming food later in the day. Eat your daily requirements of healthy foods before indulging in extras. If you haven't had at least 2 servings of fruit and 3 servings of vegetables today, pass up the bowl of potato chips and go for crudités or blend up a smoothie. Veg out; don't pig out. Go for the whole palette of colors found in produce to get the full range of antioxidants, phyto- chemicals, and a good dose of fiber. Have at least 1 serving of green leafy vegetables and 1 in the red, yellow, and orange group each day, and a good source of Vitamin C fruit to keep colds at bay. Cook low-fat at home. Roast instead of frying; add water or broth instead of fat, and bake with whole grains. Don't stock up on seasonal treats. They'll be everywhere you turn, so keep them out of the house. Holiday Fitness. Exercise boosts feelings of self-esteem, mood, body image, and alertness. It relieves stress and it keeps cravings in check. It also improves sleeping patterns, and of course, improves general fitness by increasing fat loss, lowering blood pressure, and strengthening immunity. Don't take a vacation from exercise. You’ll be more productive and energized if you take exercise breaks. Consider a brisk walk, sledding with the kids, hiking in the woods, or ice skating. Change your clothes rack back into the treadmill it once was. Then use it. Get out your yoga mat, take the dog for a walk, and notice the joy you feel in moving your body! We again had many teams going to sectionals in various league levels and two teams going to Nationals. As you read this newsletter we have installed two new signs in our walk of fame and hopefully will add four more before the year is done. Hats off to every member and the captains of all our teams here at Sonterra for all their hard work in making these results happen. More kudos to all of our members who play team tennis for what it continues to build-fun, camaraderie, friendships, great competition, teamwork, great uniforms and the enjoyment of a wonderful and lifetime sport. Keep up the good work (it’s not really work –it’s fun.) What’s up for November and December? Well as everyone begins preparing for all the holidays approaching-Sonterra still has a lot on the docket. We still have weeks of USTA/SAPTA leagues that will continue through December. We have The Club Singles for Adults and Juniors, Toys from Tennis, Tennis Appreciation Party and our annual “Holiday Sale.” Captains are already beginning the search for teams for the spring leagues and reshuffling due to ratings that have changed or might be changing at the end of the year. No rest for the weary. If you are new to the club please contact the pro shop so we can help you find a team. If you are a new captain the pro shop needs to know so we can help you find players if needed. The season will be here before you know it –so take advantage of the short off season by adding a few workout drills/ball machine hours to your schedule—you will see me there. Please, please send us results and pictures of your accomplishments. There are so many tournaments, leagues and junior events and we don’t want to miss showing you off if you won.
