Second Life: Education in a Massively Multi-Player Virtual World
Description: Second Life is a 3-D virtual world entirely created and
owned by its residents. Since launching in 2003, it has grown rapidly
and is currently inhabited by over 300,000 people from around the
world, including staff and students from a number of educational
institutions.
This workshop will provide you with an introduction to virtual worlds,
with a focus on the Second Life Platform. We will explore some
interesting places and spaces within the world of Second Life, as well as
looking at some case studies of educational projects currently
happening there.
This workshop is hands-on and will provide you with an opportunity to
get online and join us in a live virtual tour.
HI Jo! Can you help me figure out how to improve my
look? This generic look and outfit isn't doing it for me!
;-)
Howto:
DRESS UP YOUR AVATAR
A Second Life Guide by jokay Wollongong
Sure Mieke! ;-) First, let's check
out your Appearance Settings.
First off, you need to
Right-Click your avatar
and choose
' Appearance'...
Wow! That's one huge nose
you've got there! ;-)
Use the sliders to edit your Body, Head, Eyes, Ears,
Nose, Mouth, Chin, Torso and Legs.
What do you think? This feels
more like me! ;-)
Nice Work! When you're happy
with your new look, click 'Save
As' and name your new
appearance settings.
So, Mieke... how do you
feel about your new look?
GREAT! But I need some new clothes and
hair to match my new image! ;-)
Oooh! Time to go
shopping! You definitely
need some nice hair! LOL!
Sounds like fun! But I'm a newbie
with very few Linden $! :(
No probs,
Mieke! There
are lots of
places where
you can get
free or very
cheap clothes
and all sorts
of other cool
stuff!
Sure... Let's go!! ;-)
Really?? Will you
show me?
YadNi's Junkyard
is a MUST visit!
There are lots of places
'in-world' that offer freebies
and cool stuff for newbies
Here we are at New Citizen's Plaza,
Kuula (59, 147, 28)
But Wait!!!
How do I get
my hands on
all these
freebies!??
Woah! There is SO
much free stuff here! I
gotta go try some stuff
on!! ;-)
Leda
(203, 22, 53)
That's easy! ' Right-click' on any box. Give it a sec
and you'll be able to click the 'Buy' button.
After you click 'Buy' the new stuff is yours. You'll find it
in the Recent Items section of your Inventory.
You won't be charged for free stuff - but always check!
You could also visit
one of the hundres
of shops in SL to
buy yourself some
cool stuff! ;-)
You'll need some
Lindens $ tho!
Great! I can't wait to try my new stuff on!
I love this hairdo! ;-)
Great! I'm going for
this style in white
and purple! $250L!!
Eeek!
Use the Search Tool in Second Life to find more freebies
or places to shop!
Same process for
buying this as before
- but this time, the
$L will be taken from
your balance.
OUCH!!! What to do now!!??
This is NOT the look I was going for! ;-)
Now that you have all your new clothes
and supplies, open up your inventory
(Ctrl-I) to try stuff on. Be careful tho you could end up with BOX HEAD!!!
LOL! I feel really silly now! ;-)
Hehe!! ;-) Don't Panic! Just 'Right-Click' and
choose Detach to remove it from your head! ;-)
Ohhh!! Ok.. that sorta
makes sense! ;-)
Sometimes objects are
delivered inside gift boxes
or other packaging. You will
need to drag those objects
from your inventory to the
ground first and unpack
them back into your
inventory so that you can
wear or use them.
How do I open them up and unpack them?
Ctrl-I to open your inventory. Select the item
you wish to unpack and drag it to the ground.
Now that you have
everything in your
inventory, you can put it on!
'Right-click' on the item
you want to put on and
select 'Wear'.
Click 'Copy to
Inventory' or 'Copy
and Wear' and you are
ready to go!
Excellent!
Now my av
feels like me!
WOW! Mieke! What a
transformation! Your
avatar has a style all of
her own now!
Hey!! Where
did you get
those cool
boots!!?? ;-)
Thanks Jo! Just
need to get my
hair on!
That was fun!..
but dancing is
even better!
