It brings together a group of trails and community development experts that share ideas and innovations that can influence the future of trails, outdoor recreation, and economic development in Iowa. Speakers represent a diversity of users, and the event has been enjoyed by the general public. There is a fee to attend. Registration for the event is open at www.IowaTrailsSummit.org. This award-winning event (National Park Service’s Mid America Trails and Greenways, 2011), has been recognized for its unique approach to trails users working together to build healthier communities. Location: Schindler Education Center, University of Northern Iowa, Cedar Falls 11:00 am – 1:00 pm | Senior Cruise Waverly Rail Trail/Readlyn Grump Trail Co-sponsored by First National Bank and Friends of the Waverly Rail Trail RSVP required – call 352-6263 (Waverly Leisure Services) $5 covers 45 minute ride and lunch. Join us for a van ride to experience two Cedar Valley trails – the Waverly Rail Trail and the Readlyn Grump Trail. Vans will load at the Waverly Senior Center at 11:00 am and 12:00 noon. Also enjoy the My Waterloo Days parade. Bring your lights for the return trip. Location: Gateway Park, Main and Lincoln Streets, Cedar Falls SATURDAY, JUNE 14, 2014 8:00 am | 5K Race for Healthy Communities Coordinated by the Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA) and Partnership for a Drug Free Iowa (PDFI) Celebrating the inaugural of the statewide series of Races for Healthy Communities, this family-friendly event provides a sustainable, positive activity that can be shared with an entire family. Before and after the race there will be guest speakers and a presentation for the racers. Proceeds and donations from this event will be used to further both the Partnership and FCA Iowa Healthy Community missions. The amenities for participants include RFID chip timing, t-shirt and more! Go for speed or take your time and enjoy this beautiful part of the Cedar Valley Trails. For the “smaller dogs” that can’t quite go the distance, there will be a 1 ½ K walk available. Everyone is welcome! Bringing a dog is not required to join in the fun, although dogs must have a human to participate. Event proceeds will benefit several pet rescues in the Cedar Valley area. Preregistration is encouraged. Registration includes a goodie bag and is $15 before May 17 $20 after. Details are at www.CedarValleyTrails.org. Location: Gateway Park, Main and Lincoln Streets, Cedar Falls 9:00 am – 1:00 pm | Paws in the Park Hosted by Advanced Pet Care Clinic The annual Paws in the Park will once again be joining the Cedar Valley Trails Festival for a day of festivities! This is a day that friends, family, and pets can get out and enjoy the park and trail system in a variety of ways other than biking. The event raises awareness and money for the many animal rescues in the area, and they will be on hand with adoptable pets for you to meet! Veterinarians, trainers, groomers, breeders, and vendors will also be there to help educate you on your pet’s needs. K-9 Play House will be there showing agility training and obedience. There will be face painting for the kids and food available for purchase. We ask that all pets be current on their vaccines and on a leash, as leashes are required on the trails. Donations will be accepted at various stations throughout the festival for the rescues. Choose between a 25-mile Recreation Ride or a more robust 40-mile Explorer’s Round! All registered riders will be eligible to win prize packages from SCHEELS! Helmets are required. Location: Gateway Park, Main and Lincoln Streets, Cedar Falls 7:00 – 11:00 pm | Light Up the Night Ride Sponsored by Europa Cycle & Ski. Coordinated by Cedar Valley Cyclists. Music provided by Dylan Sires and Neighbors, sponsored by the Hearst Center for the Arts. Gather at 7 pm, before dusk to enjoy the pre-ride music of Dylan Sires and Neighbors and sample the culinary delights of United Church of Christ. Then at dusk (approximately 9:30 pm) enjoy a magical bike ride along nine miles of trails lined by glow sticks! Ride includes trails in Waterloo and Cedar Falls. Bike lights and helmets are required. Cedar Trails Patrol members will monitor the trails for safety.
