Volume 5, Issue 6 Feb. 1, 2016 Salesio Students I ncarnate Word High School was pleased to host our friends and fellow students from Salesio Girl’s High School in Gwanju, South Korea, on January 1927. The Salesian guests shadowed many of our Shamrocks over multiple days, enjoying the classes and often participating in the learning process. They also visited Natural Bridge Caverns, the San Marcos Outlets, Tejas Rodeo, and many other exciting places. The students enjoyed testing their palettes with delicious foods, such as pizza, ice cream, spaghetti, as well as our home-town favorite—Mexican food. On January 26, the students were treated with an over-night stay in the homes of some of our Shamrock families. They enjoyed an evening sharing family traditions and customs, playing games, watching movies, shopping and playing with pets. The girls returned to IWHS the next morning, in good spirits after a good night’s sleep. They were very pleased with their time spent at IWHS and in the homes of their gracious host families. Our well wishes to the Salesio H.S. students for a safe return home. Honor Roll Assembly O n Jan. 26 students were recognized for their academic achievement in the fall 2015-16 semester during a special assembly in the McGowen Gymnasium. National Honor Society president Allison De La O ’16 opened the ceremony with a prayer. Ms. Salazar concluded the event by congratulating the students for their academic accomplishments. Students who made honor roll were called individually. Counselor April Garza read the 11th and 12th grade names, followed by counselor Yvette Solis reading the 9th and 10th grade names. Principal Salazar congratulated each honoree and presented her with an honor roll pin. (Click here for video of the presentation) 1 Principal’s Shout out Greetings Shamrock Community, MISSION STATEMENT In a faith-based preparatory environment, Incarnate Word High School prepares confident young women dedicated to academic excellence, Christian service and social justice. CORE VALUES Academic Excellence Integrity Service Community of Faith Compassion Stewardship ACCREDITATION Incarnate Word High School is fully accredited with the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS) and Texas Catholic Conference Education Department (TCCED). January at IWHS has been filled with excitement and blessings. We were delighted to host our Salesio sister school and welcomed their charming sponsors and students. It was a pleasure to watch them interact with our girls and to share a night with our generous Shamrock families. I congratulate the students who achieved academic excellence during the first semester. But I am also proud of all our students who participate in campus life every day. They have shown discipline, aptitude and talent in all areas—sports, theatre, music, science, art, writing, technology, JROTC— and share their gifts in our clubs and organizations. This is just the first month of a new year! I can’t wait to see how the rest of the year unfolds. Wishing you love, light, and blessings, Ms. Jennifer Salazar Below is a letter from one of our parents Mrs. Monica Washington, Sahara’s mother, who had the opportunity to host one of the Salesio students. “We had a great visit with our host student. She was so peppy and excited to be staying with us for the evening. We took her to Red Robin so she could try a chocolate milkshake and an "American" hamburger. After our early dinner, we came back home and we all watched Jurassic World together. Once the movie was over, the girls exchanged gifts and then she showed Sahara how to properly put on a Korean mask. This is the 3rd year we have hosted a student and enjoy it each time. Thank you for the opportunity to open up our home. We get just as much out of the experience as our visiting student.” UIW Connection Tee Up Fore Tech Incarnate Word High School is a part of the Brainpower Connection, and is affiliated with University of the Incarnate Word. It attracts over 1,100 delegates from schools from the United States and Mexico. This year’s participants were: Monica Enriquez, Helen Anderson, Caroline Henry, Alexia Lazcano, Sofia Luna, Lauren Palmer, and Kelly Salinas. They represented the country of Sweden on various committees and did an outstanding job. While in committee, the delegates are given a world problem, and they must come up with a resolution to solve that problem. Holocaust Museum Trip J Life in the Residence Hall Melissa Martinez and Michelle Ortega at Tejas Rodeo. an. 19 was a big day for many freshman Shamrocks! The World Geography classes went on the annual field trip to the Holocaust Memorial Museum of San Antonio. The students toured the museum, and participated in group discussion regarding themes of injustice. The main event was the story of Mrs. Anna “Anni” Rado, Holocaust Survivor. Originally from Hungary, and now age 85, Anni talked about the numerous struggles she and others faced in the camps. For example, she endured a horrendous train ride only to arrive at Auschwitz, where she was then separated from her parents, and never saw them again. Her message to the students was to never take life for granted, to confront wrong-doing, to never give up hope, and to be sure to let your parents know that you love them. In the middle of her presentation, Anni paused to choke back tears, but she acknowledged that the genuinely interested Shamrock faces helped her get pass the pain of her story. Anni said she tells her story so that others can know that the Holocaust did occur, to encourage young people not to be a ‘bystander’ to injustice, and always with the hope that humanity may forever put an end to genocide. Even though it was difficult to speak of some events, Anni answered all questions. At the conclusion, Anni continued her generosity of spirit by meeting the students, and posing for pictures with them. In return, she received numerous Shamrock hugs. It was an honor to be in the presence of a person who is a living example that we, too, can overcome adversity. God bless you, Mrs. Anna “Anni” Rado. Also, a special Shamrock shout out to Mr. Andy Wyatt who volunteered to chaperone for the third time in the last four years, and to Coaches Fricke, Treviño, and Savage for driving the busses. You put the ‘rock’ in Shamrock! 7 Parents in the Know Math Tutoring School Administrators Jennifer Salazar Principal (210) 829-3107 [email protected] TBD Vice-Principal of Student Academics (210) 829-3105 Dr. Langston Williams Jr. Vice-Principal of Student Affairs (210) 829-3106 [email protected] April Fricke Athletics Director (210) 829-3122 [email protected] Carli Valverde Director of Enrollment (210) 829-3123 [email protected] Audra Cardona Director of Campus Ministry (210) 829-3121 [email protected] Stephanie Denning Director of Development (210) 832-2143 [email protected] Debbie Zielins Registrar (210) 829-3112 [email protected] Cybele Bolado ‘86 Director of Alumnae Relations (210) 829-3103 [email protected] Liz Valerio Residence Life Coordinator (210) 841-7403 [email protected] Like us on Facebook Monday & Wednesday 4:00-6:00 PM Geometry Precalculus, Algebra I & II 4:30-6:00 PM Tuesday Precalculus, Algebra I & II 4:00-6:00 PM Geometry 4:30-6:00 PM Semi-Prom Information Semi bids will go on sale Feb 1-5 during all lunch mods. The theme, “Communities of Faith, Knowledge and Service” is practiced everyday among the administration, faculty and staff and modeled by our girls. I sincerely hope you make time to accept the invitation of our Principal, Miss Salazar, to attend class, open mods or lunch with your daughter this week. You are the most important element in the foundation of education. Come and see your investment, and be a part of the celebration. On Wednesday of this week, the Student Appreciation Committee will honor the girls with cupcakes and rings pops and the Teacher Appreciation Committee will honor the staff with lunch on Thursday. Andrea Gonzalez, chair and Annette Reyes, co-chair for “Tale as Old as Time” along with many volunteers are making this Shamrock tradition a “fairytale event” you want to attend at the Omni Colonnade Hotel on Sunday, February 21st. Finally, PTO is committed to a “Community of Service” and through our time, talent and treasure we are a “Community of Faith”. With the best of our combined “Knowledge” we make Incarnate Word a place that is welcoming, inspiring and progressively better. In August, during the first PTO meeting of 2015/16 we had a team building exercise that was used as a preview of all that Miss Salazar would embrace as our new principal. The question was asked, “What does Incarnate Word High School mean to you, in one word”. I wanted to share the words of your PTO committee chairs now, as a way to celebrate Catholic Schools Week and the immense pride the PTO Board has for our community and heritage. There were two in the group who needed more than one word to capture their feeling. What word would you think of?
