About BETTA
BETTA is here to aid the local community in forming relationships with our twin
towns of Offenburg in Germany and Fontenay-aux-Roses in France.
BETTA works hard to ensure individuals and groups have the opportunity to develop
their cultural knowledge. We strive to produce opportunities for the community
both here and in our twin towns.
We will continue to make sure BETTA goes from strength to strength! All members
of the committee have a wide and varied range of skills and abilities which
contribute to the running of the association.

Club Escargot
We are coming to the end of our first year of Club Escargot and it is becoming more and
more popular! We would like to take this opportunity to thank our sponsors that have
helped us to set up the club and keep it running. Our Grassroots funding has now come to
an end but we thank them for their support over the past year. We would like to say a
special thanks to Marion, who is the Community Champion at Tesco in Borehamwood. She
has been a fantastic support by both participating in some of the sessions and providing us
with refreshments.
The club will continue next term and we would like to thank Cllr. Morris Bright for his very
generous contribution towards the Big BETTA Bastille Ball event which will raise valuable
funds for the club. We are also grateful to Cllr. Pat Strack and Cllr. Penny Swallow for their
contributions towards the club.
Our aim is to introduce children to the fun of learning French as early as possible, as well as
discovering the culture and customs. The general ages of those attending the club are
between 6 and 12 years old but this is flexible. The classes are held every Saturday during
term time at St Paul’s Church Hall, St Paul’s Close, (corner of Cranes Way and Furzehill Road)
each one is 2 hours long (from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m.). The classes cover the basics of the
language (e.g. parts of the body, colours, numbers, positions, greetings, animals, clothes,
transports, weather, etc.) through songs, rhymes, activities, cooking sessions, and traditional
dances. The classes are run by qualified and fully trained teachers who have a lot of
experience teaching children AND are all NATIVE FRENCH SPEAKERS. Children play, learn and
are immersed in the French Language throughout the sessions. These activities actively help
children with their communications skills and school progress. The adults who run the club
are subjected to Enhanced C.R.B. checks, so you can drop the children off with the
knowledge that they are in safe hands and go and have some much needed time alone!
We have a special offer for members of BETTA:
“Pay for one of your children and another one can go for free!”
Please contact us if you would like to know more and book a place for next term!

Offenburg Twin Town News
We have been in regular contact with “Die Brucke” our equivalent
organisation in Offenburg, since their visit to us last April. We are
building good relationships with people in Offenburg.
Herr Teufel, the chair of Die Brücke, has now informed us of the dates
for their Schools Olympiad in 2012.
For this event,
Offenburg invites older children from their twin towns to take part in
sports and also a chance to see Offenburg first hand.
This event will be held from 14 to 16 June 2012 and we are looking
for children to take part. Please get in touch if you are a sporting
group for children and are interested in taking part in this fantastic
opportunity.
Our aim is to encourage the youth of Borehamwood and Elstree,
regardless of whether they can speak German or not, to take part in this
event. They will meet youngsters from not only our twin town of
Offenburg but other towns twinned with Offenburg, which include:
Altenburg in East Germany; Lons-le Sauer in France; Olsztyn in Poland;
Pietra Ligure in Italy; and Weiz in Austria.
Please contact BETTA for more details if you are interested in this event.

Lesewelt – Offenburg’s Reading Club for all ages
A big well done to Lesewelt, who work hard in Offenburg to give reading
opportunities to both adults and children!
On World Book Day, which takes place on Saturday 23rd April 2011, they will be
selling cakes in Offenburg and other delicious items in order to raise funds for
the brilliant work that they do.
For more information on Lesewelt, please go to their website:

Timo - on work experience in Borehamwood
We would like to say a formal welcome to Timo from Offenburg, who is here on
work experience. We hope he enjoys his time here and we wish him all the best for
the future.
More to come....
In June, we will be welcoming two more students from Offenburg and they will be
doing their work experience at the Ibis hotel in Borehamwood.
We would like to thank the Ibis hotel for agreeing to help in this way.

Fontenay aux Roses Twin Town News
Next month, we welcome the “Veterans” Rugby team from Fontenay. We have
teamed up with our local Borehamwood Rugby Club to organise a family day for
everyone to enjoy.
This event, held on Saturday 14th May 2011 has been organised at the home of
Harrow Rugby Club in Stanmore, as this was the closest pitch we could find and is
the home ground for the Borehamwood Rugby Club.
Activities start at 11.00 AM, with the match “kick off” at 2.30 PM. We will be
promoting rugby by running tag rugby activities for parents and children. There will
also be a Barbecue. Tickets are available in advance at a cost of £3.00 per person.
For further information about this event, please get in touch!

Update on pen pal exchange between primary schools in Elstree/Borehamwood and
Fontenay-aux-Roses
The scheme is successfully up and running now in five primary schools and pupils have used
Easter as a source of inspiration for their exchange. We will be trying to involve more
schools in the scheme as soon as new interest is shown by more schools in Fontenay.
Project for an exchange between Schools in Elstree/Borehamwood and Fontenay-auxRoses in 2012
We have been approached by Fontenay and have exchanged emails regarding a potential
school exchange between our twin towns next year. Three forms from two primary schools
in Fontenay are very keen to come over to England in 2012. If this materialises, we would
put in place a pen pal exchange first so that the children from both countries get to know
each other in advance. More on this as we hear back from Fontenay…
German Olympic games in Offenburg
We have now been given the date for the 2012 mini-Olympic children games organised and
held in our German twin town. We are hoping to involve some children from
Elstree/Borehamwood, regardless of their ability to speak German, as people from
Offenburg are happy to exchange in English. We will also contact schools teaching German
to see if they are interested in taking part.
Exchange between secondary schools from England and Germany
We are looking to put in place some links between secondary schools from Offenburg and
schools from our borough. This could solely involve English if the school doesn’t teach
German. It would still be a very enriching experience to strengthen the links between our
two countries and would provide an opportunity for English students to get to know another
European culture as well as being a potential opportunity to travel abroad. We will be
approaching local secondary schools on their return after the Easter break.

The Big BETTA Bastille Ball!
The Borehamwood and Elstree Twin Town Association runs a Saturday club during term
time called Club Escargot, where children can learn French in fun and interesting ways. The
club will be celebrating its first birthday on 1st May 2011 and we are looking forward to its
second year.
We are holding an event to raise valuable funds in order to keep the club running. We also
aim to be able to reduce the costs for the parents. We have previously relied on funding
from grants which have now run out, so it is vital that we raise lots of money at this event.
The Big BETTA Bastille Ball will be held on 13th July 2011 (starting at 7:30 p.m.) at Allum
Hall in Elstree. The event will have a Bastille Day theme and we will have lots of exciting
entertainment, including performances among others by: Local Accordionist Roswitha
Lamb, The Borehamwood Brass Band, local Soprano Adria Jackson, Pair Dance Community
Group and our very own Club Escargot Children! The Bal-Musette will be taking place during
the whole evening where those attending can dance to their hearts content! There will be a
fancy dress competition for those who take on the challenge of dressing in Bastille Day
clothing! There will also be a Luxury French Buffet and a Champagne Bar, where drinks can
be purchased.
The ticket price for all of this is only £15!
BETTA is passionate about expanding opportunities for our community. We are inviting
people to come and support this event and, in turn, support our local children by raising
funds to keep Club Escargot running.
Please contact:
Martine Eni (BETTA Chair), Jane Strongman (BETTA Secretary) or Rex Dunwoody
(Membership Secretary) for tickets:
Thank you and we look forward to hearing from you!

BETTA BARN DANCE - A SWINGING SUCCESS!
Venue: St Michaels & All Angels Church Hall, Brook Road, Borehamwood
Date: 12th February 2011
"Swing your Partners" was the order of the day at BETTA's very first Barn Dance. Caller Nick
Male put the dancers through their paces to the lively sounds of the Red River Band. Our
venue was the church hall at St. Michael and All Angels. For this we thank our good friend
and committee member Rev. Richard Leslie. Affinity Sutton gave a grant towards the cost of
the evening, which was attended by a wide cross - section of the community. While the
catering talents of the Eni family were on full display, Jane and Rex manned the door. Andy
Grady saved the day when the band's P.A. system produced some gremlins. BETTA would
particularly like to put on record its appreciation of the band's guitarist - Chris Robins.
Although very unwell on the night, Chris struggled through like a true pro.
“Thank-you”, Chris.

Borehamwood Brass is based in the town of Borehamwood in Hertfordshire although most
of our players come from surrounding areas. You don't have to live in Borehamwood to join!
The band performs throughout the year but most of our engagements are in the June/ July
and Christmas seasons. This year the band celebrates its 40th Anniversary and is planning a
special event in June. They have a wide selection of music which has been acquired over
many years. The library includes many of the classic brass band pieces as well as 'pop', film
and TV themes, and many solo pieces. We rehearse on a Friday between 8pm and 10pm at
Holy Cross church hall in Balmoral Drive, Borehamwood and welcome current and returning
players. For more information contact Sam Rice on 07970 894315
The seed of Borehamwood RFC was formed minutes after England won the Rugby World
Cup. A group of rugby enthusiasts got chatting about how a place like Borehamwood had
never before had a team and a decision was made to do something about it. The club is
formed by a friendly bunch from all walks of life, whose origins span the world. If you are
looking for a team to play for or to watch, please get in touch and you'll be made to feel
most welcome. For more information contact the club on 07725 170508.
Pair Dance aims to teach Creative Learning e.g. Body Basics and RUSH (Young Leaders in our
Community) and to bring performing arts to Borehamwood and other suburban areas by
making high quality performances more accessible to those who struggle with travelling to
London. This means that there is an affordable dance class running in Hertsmere! Pair
Dance aims to promote creativity and performance skills in a positive and vibrant
environment. For more info please call 0203 489 9223 or email [email protected]
