The Field for the 18 Annual Penn Masters Golf Championship
The Field for the 18th Annual Penn Masters Golf Championship
York, PA
May 15 – 18, 2014
It is my great pleasure to welcome you to the 18th Annual Penn Masters Golf Championship! This year’s
championship will be conducted from May 15-18, 2014 in York, Pennsylvania. Here again are the details for what promises
to be the event of the year!
Penn Masters headquarters will be located at the Heritage Hills Golf Resort. This is the premiere destination in in all
of York County. Heritage Hills offers challenging golf on picturesque courses, welcoming hotel accommodations, relaxing
spa and salon treatments, and a variety of unique dining experiences in any of their fine restaurants. Pull up a bar stool at
Knickers Pub, overlooking the golf course at Heritage Hills. With its pub-style cuisine and extensive drink menu, it’s sure to
satisfy every taste bud. Relax with friends by the large screen TV or try your hand at shuffleboard. With water features and
sunny views of the course, the patio at Knickers has the county’s best outdoor seating. Live entertainment draws a large
crowd to the fresh air and stunning views of the golf course. It’s a favorite spot among locals and out of town guests alike to
enjoy fine cigars and cocktails on the patio. For innovative dining, choose Ironwoods Restaurant, offering unique small
plates, fresh seafood and American regional entrees. Complimented by an extensive wine and spirits list, Ironwoods is a great
setting for a glass of wine or specialty cocktail. Weekends offer an intimate setting with live jazz in the restaurant.
Heritage Hills offers a deluxe breakfast buffet that will start your day off right. The buffet has something for
everyone, from made to order omelets, bacon, sausage, pancakes, fresh fruits, juices and yogurt to big & crusty bagels, to
assorted cereals, waffles & pastries. The Heritage Hills Resort will surely satisfy all of your primal cravings each morning!
We have secured a record field of 91 golfers, participants from all over the country representing 8 different states
who will compete for this year’s crown, as the championship begins upon your arrival at Springwood Golf Club on Thursday
afternoon May 16th, where you’ll sharpen your game during the opening practice round where we will have a shotgun start at
2:00 pm on this 4 ½ star Golf Digest rated gem. Play will commence from the white tees & plays to a par of 72. Jerry
Schiavo, our defending champion, begins his quest for a 2nd straight Penn Masters Golf Championship. Variety & Beauty
best describe the challenge that awaits you. This links-style 18-hole course stretches more than 6,406 yards through
rugged, hilly Pennsylvania countryside. A challenging course with 75-100 foot drops in elevation throughout and
carries over wetlands that will challenge even the most skilled golfer. Springwood is a stunning championship facility
which represents a stiff challenge to kick off this year’s championship which will be a precursor of the certain bloodshed to
follow.
The championship begins on Friday May 16th at the spectacular Heritage Hills Golf Resort with a shotgun start
beginning at 1:00 pm. We’ll be tackling this spectacular Pennsylvania mountain course from the White Tees… which winds
its way over 6,223 yards over breathtaking mountain vistas, rolling hills and large undulating greens…This breathtaking
course has been nationally recognized with a prestigious rating of 4 stars by Golf Digest and is home to hole # 18, quite
simply the most difficult par 4 in Penn Masters history...which just so happens to be the deciding 54th hole on championship
Sunday!
Upon completion of round #1, we will begin what promises to be an entertaining, relaxing & fun filled evening with
our Champions Dinner, located inside Heritage Hills Grand Ball Room. We will sit down to a fabulous dinner buffet
including bistro tenderloin, stuffed chicken breast, beef lasagna, twice baked potatoes and various sides beginning at 8:00 pm,
with unlimited draft beer and dessert. We will honor Jerry Schiavo, the first ever ‘chowda head’ champion, and relive the
glory that encompassed his 1st Penn Masters triumph during the’13 championship amid 6-time champ Ed Brown’s epic
collapse. We will formally present Jerry the priceless “Brownie Jug”, a tribute to my late father, Don Brown Sr., the heart
and soul of the Penn Masters. We will also recognize our heroic past champions previously immortalized on the jug…Ed
Brown, Dick Bourassa, George Blasiak, Ted Kelly, Chuck Jaquin, Bob Chiovaro, Brian McLauchlan and John Walkerwicz.
Day 2, or “Moving Day” shapes up to be another demanding test of golf, rewarding all facets of both the long & short
game, while demanding accuracy, patience & shot making. The official 2nd round begins on Saturday May 17th with a shotgun
start at 1:30 pm at Pilgrim’s Oak, a links-style gem located in the gently rolling hills of Lancaster County, flanked by scenic and
carefully tilled farms of its Amish and Mennonite neighbors. Pilgrim's Oak is ranked by Golf Magazine as the 13th best course
in Pennsylvania for" Courses you can Play" and annually receives Golf Digests four star award. We’ll experience this
captivating links layout that is always kept in immaculate shape, from the blue tees measuring 6,320 yards and plays to a par of
72. Moving Day will offer a challenging & difficult measure of one’s driving ability, while the slick contours of the putting
surfaces require the ultimate touch with the flat stick.
“Championship Sunday” promises to separate the men from the boys, when the fields “Low 16” will tackle the
Heritage Hill Golf Resort, where the monster comes alive, and this time from the daunting championship tees measuring 6,700
yards beginning promptly at 8:30 am on Sunday, May 18th. Heritage Hills boasts an impeccably manicured course with various
tree-lined holes to keep your visual senses on overload. This final round masterpiece invites you to experience every facet of
this intricate game. Those without the heart, passion and skill will crumble during this final grueling test. The demanding
finishing holes reward those who find fairways & greens, & also the mettle to handle the pressure of golf’s ultimate prize.
Again, welcome to the event that promises to be the golf experience of a lifetime...The 18th Annual Penn Masters Golf
Championship. Please print out this information packet and bring with you prior to your travels to York…. We’ll be seeing all of
you very soon!

Chairman
DONALD BROWN SR. 1932-2006
"Brownie" played the final 9 holes of his illustrious golfing career during the 2006 opener at
Chenango Valley State Park. He barely had the strength to stand and breathe, but competed
to the bitter end, posting a remarkable score of 68.
He then paid a brilliant tribute to his beloved nephew, Chuck Jaquin,
during the Champions dinner. He collapsed five days later, never to walk
again.
He passed away peacefully, with his family by his side on June 6th, 2006,
thirty years to the day his father, Harold Brown, passed. Everyone in this
year's field can honor him by giving it all they've got on every shot,
displaying a passion for this great game, never quitting, competing to the
bitter end, playing by the rules, and by sharing some laughs on the course
with some friends. His spirit will never die. This year's champion will get
his name inscribed on the "Brownie" Jug forever, what an honor...

Course Previews & Notes
Rugged Springwood Course brings the challenge
at Heritage Hills Golf Resort in York
YORK, Pa. -- Springwood Golf Course is one of two courses that are part of Heritage Hills Golf Resort.
The Heritage Hills Course has a classic design for players of all skill levels while the rugged Springwood Golf Course
offers more of a challenge. Springwood sprawls across hilly Pennsylvania countryside with dramatic elevation
changes.
Although the Springwood Course is seemingly short at just more than 6,400 yards from the back tees, it plays much
longer. Risk-reward opportunities are everywhere, making it a true shotmaker's course. Players will have to contend
with high rough, mounding, and a liberal smattering of bunkers along the greens and fairways. The shorter par 4s -the fourth, sixth and seventh holes specifically -- are particularly tough with undulating greens framed by a variety of
hazards.
Water doesn't have a prominent role but it does come into play on a few holes, most notably on Springwood's par-3
11th, which requires a tricky forced carry over wetlands to a narrow landing area.
Springwood Golf Club
Springwood Golf Course is one of two championship courses available at Heritage Hills Golf Resort & Conference Center. At
6,826 yards, it is the longer of the two courses by over 300 yards. Springwood is also considered the more challenging layout,
which can make it seem even longer. The course sprawls across a rugged, hilly landscape with holes so diverse, golfers will surely
be using every club in their bag.
Heritage Hills Golf Resort
Hole 1 - High Hopes
The opening hole at Heritage Hills is a 375-yard Par 4 which doglegs slightly to the right. A big hitter
can attempt to cut the corner by hitting directly over the big tree on the right hand side of the fairway.
OB looms on the left, so beware. Two frontside bunkers protect a large undulating green.
Hole 2 - Early Bird
Hole #2 is an uphill 480-yard Par 5. The hole is deceptively long. Keep the tee shot straight, as, again,
OB runs along the entire left side of the hole. The right holds no real trouble beyond a few smaller
pines and a larger tree near the green. A huge green awaits the player, so if you have the distance and
the lie, reaching in two is possible.
Hole 3 - Scottish Gale
Hole #3, our #2 Handicap hole, seems wide open, but don't be fooled. A 425-yard Par 4, this hole
offers a wide fairway, relatively speaking, but two large fairway bunkers lie in wait to the left off of
the tee. In addition, some heavier rough and tougher lies are present to the right. The green is
protected by two large bunkers on the frontside. A Par here is a good score.
Hole 4 - Trap Ease
A tease. Long hitters may be able to drive the green on this 317-yard Par 4, however it is not
recommended, even for the big hitters. Perched on a high point on the course, left to right winds are
common. The green is protected by a frontside bunker which is treacherous. Heavy rough is everpresent to the left, as is a large bunker which is in play off of the tee. A fairway wood or a long iron is
the play here
Hole 5 - Free Fall
A signature hole at Heritage Hills. Club selection is the key. The elevation difference tends to make
the hole play one club less while a large, tiered green awaits the players down below. It is important
to keep the ball below the pin or on the corresponding tier as the pin, as a downhill putt here can roll
right off of the green very easily.
Hole 6 - Side Kick
A 299-yard Par 4, Hole #6 can be reached off of the tee. However, a narrow fairway makes the
placement of your tee shot imperative. Miss left and you are in big trouble, down a hill amongst the
trees. A large hill borders the hole along the right hand side and many times the hill can kick your ball
back down towards the fairway, hence the name of the hole.
Hole 7 - Back in the Saddle
Hole #7 is a 501-yard Par 5. Play the hole well and you can score low. OB is closer than you think
along the entire left hand side of the hole, and miss right, you could be in major trouble, especially on
your second shot. Try to keep the ball in the fairway or along the left side for your best shot at a low
score.
Hole 8 - Living on the Ledge
A short Par 3 at 151 yards, do NOT miss right. If so, you're in the drop area, hitting 3. A frontside
bunker protects the green to the right as well. The left hand side offers some forgiveness, as it is open
as long as you're not OB.
Hole 9 - Double Disaster
A very scenic hole to complete the front nine. Hole #9 is almost entirely bordered along the right
hand side by water, so avoid missing right at all costs. Keep the ball in the fairway or to the left and
you'll finish the front strong. Miss right and it could be disaster. Expect an audience at times from our
Terrace which overlooks the green to the left.
Hole 10 - Camelback
The green is not able to be seen off of the tee, however, hit the ball straight and get over the hump in
the fairway, and you should get some roll to your shot and find yourself in good shape for your
approach. The hole is relatively forgiving, and not much trouble is present other than a fairway
bunker in the landing area on the left.
Hole 11 - Fore-ever-green
A 526-yard uphill Par 5, distance off of the tee is crucial. Smaller trees guard both sides of the
fairway, but there is no real trouble until you are closer to the green where some larger trees can
hinder your approach. A large green awaits the player, so make sure to check the placement of the pin
to gauge your distance correctly.
Hole 12 - Deception
Hole #12 features a large green guarded by two bunkers on either side. The green tends to slope
slightly forward, so try and keep your ball below the hole if you want a makeable putt, especially if
the greens are fast. This shouldn't be a problem, though, as this hole tends to play a little longer than
anticipated.
Hole 13 - Dangerfield
Monster drives are common on this downhill 358-yard Par 4. Not too much trouble on this hole, but
make sure to avoid the trees lining the fairway along both sides of the fairway. A smaller green awaits
as compared to others on the course, however shorter approaches are the norm.
Hole 14 - Oak Narrows
The most important tip for Hole #14 is to keep your drive straight. An uphill Par 4, miss to the left or
right and your 2nd shot to the green could be in jeopardy, as large trees can block your line to the pin.
On your approach, an elevated green awaits, so be sure to adjust your club accordingly.
Hole 15 - Tierful
A long Par 3, try and place your tee shot below the pin. The green is tiered and you can be left with a
difficult putt if your position on the green is undesirable. Additionally, a deep pot bunker is tucked
away, hidden on the front left side of the green. Find that, and you may have a tough time getting out.
Hole 16 - The Spoiler
A dogleg right, this 330-yard Par 4 can be driven off of the tee if you are a big hitter and you choose
to cut the corner. A creek borders the entire right side of the fairway and the trees are OB to the right
of the creek. The safe play is to attempt to hit the fairway and set yourself up for an easy approach in
to a large green. Make sure to avoid the two large bunkers on either side of the green on your
approach.
Hole 17 - Woody's Watch
Tee off over a large pond on this scenic Par 4 and aim for the middle of the fairway. If you are to
miss, make sure you miss right, as the left side of the fairway is bordered by a creek, with OB to the
left. The same creek comes into play on your 2nd shot as you must clear it on your approach and it
continues along the right-hand side into a pond on the backside of the green. Be careful, Woody is
watching you from behind the green!
Hole 18 - Russell's Revenge
Hole #18 is the #1 Handicap Hole at Heritage Hills, if not entire York County. Hazard everywhere off
of the tee, a strong drive down the middle is needed in order to reach the green in regulation without
having to hit an incredible shot. The green is deceptively uphill and is bordered on the frontside by a
large water hazard. It is also guarded by three large bunkers. Miss right if you are going to miss on
your second shot. Miss short or miss left and you're wet.

The 16th represents a birdie hole as this par 4 measures only 352 yards from the blue tees. Avoid the fairway bunker
on the left on your drive, coupled with a precise approach shot and you’ll leave this green happy.
