The Breakbulk Port of Europe
Efficient hinterland
connections
Wide range of
logistics and
storage solutions
Around 14,000 seagoing ships
and 55,000 barges call at
Antwerp every year. The Port of
Antwerp offers immediate access
to extensive road, rail and inland
shipping networks and is as
such a major link in the chain of
international trade. All terminals
at the port are multimodal with
rail links extending right up to the
terminal and direct transhipment
possibilities into barge and train.
The port offers direct access
to the 1,500 km (930 miles) of
inland waterways in Belgium and
further afield in the Ruhr region
of Germany, Eastern France,
Switzerland and the entire panEuropean network. Thousands
of trucks are also loaded and
unloaded on a daily basis.
Antwerp’s central location within
Northwest Europe makes it the
port of choice for a range of
customers offering the fastest
onward connections to the continent’s major industrial and commercial centres. Unique amongst
its neighbouring seaports, the
Port of Antwerp can receive
millions of tonnes of cargo up to
80 km (50 miles) inland by the
most environmentally-friendly
means of transport, thus massively reducing truckmovements
and their resultant carbon footprint.

The Port of Antwerp and its operators continue to invest in the
future growth of the port's breakbulk activities. With the construction of new dedicated breakbulk
terminals and the renovation of
quay walls and existing terminals,
including dedicated deepsea
steel and metal terminals, the
Port of Antwerp is boosting the
capacity and efficiency of its
handling services even further in
the future. A second lock, improving access to the left bank of the
river, will soon be constructed.
