Budva is town on the Montenegro coast 2500 years old. Especially attractive is the health-giving
environment, unspoiled nature and the fragrant air made invigorating by the sea spume during strong
southern winds and branching by mountain freshness during storms that blow from the north. Budva's
splendid natural setting is enhanced by a diverse cultural and historical heritage. The territory of
municipality of Budva (122 square kilometers) occupies the central part of Montenegrin coast, a
favorable position as regards communications.
Budva's climate is Mediterranean. Further advantages are a mean annual air temperature of 15,5° C,
270 sunny days, only a few days of frost, even fewer with snow, the calm sea (with a refreshing maestral
in the summer and strong north and south winds in the winter), an average annual temperature of the
water is 18,5° C (with a summer maximum of 27° C). It's limpid, azure-blue sea. Therefore the bathing
season lasts six or seven months.
The region where venerable Budva and its earliest inhabitants, the enchelei, were first cited is closely
connected with the fate of a famous mortal, Cadmus, founder of Thebes in Boeothia, who came from
Phoenicia to Greece several generations before the beginning of the Trojan War. This fortunate soul,
whom the gods had given as spouse, Harmonia, blond daughter of Aphrodite and Ares, left Thebes in his
old age and settled among the Enchelei, founded Budva, defeated the neighboring Illyrian's and spent
the rest of his life together with his wife in this distant, foreign land. Even Sophocles mentions Budva in
his tragedy "Oicles", written in 5th century BC.
Old Town is the trademark of Budva. Originally built on an island, a sand isthmus developed between it
and the main land and so it became a peninsula. Old Town Budva is a unique architectural and urban
unit that was already mentioned as a settlement in ancient times.
Budva is the most important tourist site along the Montenegrin coast when it comes to entertainment,
with special summer programmes offering a bit of everything and something for everybody. During the
summer months, Budva is mostly the town for the young. Night bars, terraces and open-air discos are
big attractions for all young people, especially during long, sleepless nights. For many of our visitors, the
Budva nights are the most interesting part of their summer holidays. Over the last 15 years Budva has
become known as the most popular tourist town for young people.
