ANNUAL REPORT 2013 Inside: The purpose of this organization is to improve the general condition of the blind persons, and other persons living with disabilities, who would benefit from the services of trained Pilot Dogs and Assistance Dogs. The purpose of this organization should include, but not be limited to, the training of dogs to become Pilot Dogs and Assistance Dogs, as well as the furnishing of Pilot Dogs and Assistance Dogs to qualified persons. 1 Letter from Our Executive Director Year End Report Puppy Department News Donor Recognition 2013 Budget A Message from the Executive Director... As I sit and ponder what message I would like to convey, and how to express our gratitude to everyone that has assisted us in completing our mission over the past 63 years and 7,484 individuals we have helped, I find the words of one of our graduates more fitting than any I can articulate. Dear Pilot Dogs, A special thanks to the staff and Lions members who have donated their resources and funds for this program. I am truly thankful for the time I spent at Pilot school in May 2013. Every day that I work with and care for Cheyenne, I think of all the excellent training and hospitality everyone extended to me during my stay. I feel that I have been privileged to become part of a family with a shared mission and experiences that have shaped my life in numerous ways. When I put the harness on Cheyenne, we are both transformed. I am not just a partially sighted person trying to make his way in the world, but rather one who travels with purpose and confidence. The average working life of a team is still 8.4 years. 3 Becky & Pilot Dog “Waldo” Pilot Dog the Star of the Courtroom Judge David Holton was recently matched with his sixth Pilot Dog , Rocky. While there is always a lot of emotion leading up to receiving a new guideexcitement, nervousnessJudge Holton wasn’t the only one anxiously awaiting Rocky’s arrival. Those regularly working at the Hall of Justice where Judge Holton presides had come to know and adore his previous Pilot Dog, Buddy, and were waiting to meet the dog who would take his place in the courthouse. Rocky’s predecessor had left some big shoes for him to fill, as Buddy had become quite the popular fixture at the courthouse over his decade of guiding Judge Holton. The arrival of the Judge’s new dog was filmed by a local news station, who followed their first meeting, training with Pilot Dogs trainer Bonnie Rueber and his introduction to everyone at the Hall of Justice. Judge Holton and Rocky quickly got into a rhythm with each other and look to be an excellent match. While Buddy could certainly never be replaced, we are confident Rocky will go on to become a legend in his own right at the courthouse. Judge Holton in 1980 with first Pilot Dog “Simon” & today with “Rocky” In-Home Placement & Follow Up We did several in-home placements and/or follow ups this year. They were in Ohio, Georgia, Michigan, Florida, Virginia, New York and Kentucky. Doing these trips gives us better insight into the different obstacles our students face on a daily basis. On most of these trips we try to do more than just the home placement. We will visit other students, attend a Lions meeting, drop off information at rehab facilities, or interview prospective students. Dog Report (Graduated & Career Change) In 2013 we worked with 226 dogs. Of these: 63% were Labrador Retrievers, 10% were Standard Poodles, 8% were Boxers, 7% were German Shepherds, 7% were Dobermans, 3% were Golden Retrievers, 2% were Vizslas. 50% were female and 50% were male The percentage of each breed that graduated or is still in training: 84% of Labrador Retrievers, 91% of Standard Poodles, 81% of Doberman Pinschers, 69% of German Shepherds, 100% of Golden Retrievers, 84% of Boxers and 66% of Vizslas. 4 Puppy Department Update In 2013 we sent 90 dogs out to be fostered with the hope that they will become future Pilot Dogs. They were raised by volunteer adults and children (62%), prisoners (32%) and 4-H’ers for their project (6%). The breeds included: 30% Labrador Retrievers 21% Standard Poodles 19% Golden Retrievers 14% German Shepherds 7% Boxers 6% Doberman Pinchers 3% Vizsla Prison & Volunteer Program Currently, we have 29 puppies being raised in four correctional facilities. The inmates at each facility have the same responsibilities: to housebreak, teach obedience, and socialize the puppy they are raising. The Puppy Department staff goes to the institutions to ensure that the inmates learn the proper techniques to train the puppies. Faithful volunteers help two days a week walking the puppies in German Village to allow them to have exposure outside of the correctional facilities. Our list of volunteers has grown and they have become a very loyal group of people. A waiting list has been established for future and/or substitute walkers. (Continued on Page 7) In loving memory of Timothy W. Gilmore We are grateful for the time Tim gave to the Pilot Pups since he began volunteering in 2013. His calmness and selflessness brought joy to the puppies in our program. However, I think Tim enjoyed the puppies just as much as the pups enjoyed him. The institution located in Cleveland is guided by volunteers Dr. Alice Schottenstein and Cathy Christopher, with occasional visits by our staff. Dr. Schottenstein and Cathy spend two afternoons a week working with the inmates at North East Prerelease Center. They work on obedience, grooming, manners and overall health care of the puppies. They have also established a great group of volunteers to “furlough” the puppies for one week each month. The puppies live in the homes of these volunteers for the week to experience a true home-life atmosphere, which also includes many trips to places like doctor’s offices, schools, sporting events and overall exposure to the outside world. With the help of our volunteers, the success of our puppies has improved greatly. To say thank you just doesn’t seem to be enough. 4-H & The Puppy Department Connect In conjunction with Lucinda Miller (OSU Extension Specialist-4-H Youth Development, Companion & Small Animal Programs), the Pilot Dogs Puppy Department has been working to increase awareness amongst 4-H club members of the possibility of raising a Pilot Puppy as a 4-H project. At the state level the number of areas 4-H’ers are able to enroll has increased to five in the hopes of increasing competition and interest in new projects. Our goal is that this new increase will lead to more 4-H’ers raising Pilot Puppies for a project. To achieve this, we have worked with Lucinda to create a brochure outlining the demands and benefits of raising a puppy and how well it can fit into 4-H. This spring we will be attending local 4-H open houses as well as a part of our effort to increase awareness of our program. We currently have ten youths raising a Pilot Puppy as either their 4-H or FFA project. We are extremely grateful for the support we have received at both the state and local levels in spreading the word about our Puppy Raising Program. Jowaine Grimes is one of the 4-H’ers raising a Pilot Puppy for her project. She is currently raising her third dog for us, Astro. Her first two dogs have both successfully graduated as Pilot Dogs, but before that were award winners with Jowaine at her county fair. Jowaine’s mother, Michelle, says that raising puppies for Pilot Dogs has taught Jowaine a lot of responsibility and been a rewarding experience for her. She also shares in the sentiments of most all of our Puppy Raisers-that giving them back is the hardest part. But for Michelle: “when you get the picture of them and their new owners it brings tears to your eyes.” Jowaine & “Maggie” 7 Leiss, C. Livergood, C. Megison, C. Helwagen, B. Morris, C. Hutson, B.
