United States Citizenship
Craven Literacy Council is proud to report
that 16 adult learners earned their United
States Citizenship this year. These individuals
worked hard with their volunteer tutors to
improve their English listening, speaking,
reading, and writing skills, in addition to
learning the answers to 100 civics questions.
We are proud of these students and tutors
and happy to be part of such a wonderful
goal.
“I am a proud United States Citizen. I can’t
wait to vote in the next election.”

Adult Education
Important to Staff
From the Director’s Desk
The four part-time staff at Craven Literacy
Council take their jobs as adult educators very
seriously. They know they must remain current
in the adult literacy field and attend professional
development and training when finances and
time allow. Donna Marshall completed her
Master’s Degree in Adult Education from East
Carolina University at her expense in 2014.
Donna, Cathy Weiss and April King attended the
North Carolina Community College Basic Skills
Conference in August. (Cathy and April are CLC’s
Student and Volunteer Services Coordinators
respectively.) Donna and Cathy also attended
the US Conference on Adult Literacy in
Washington, DC in October that brought
together adult literacy advocates and educators
to share new ideas, learn from leading thinkers
and inspire one another. Cathy and April are
both working toward the College and Career
Readiness Silver Core credentials through NCCCS
and attend training whenever possible. All staff
are active members of the North Carolina
Literacy Association and attend their annual
training conferences. Donna also serves on the
Board of NCLA.
It is with much
enthusiasm and
excitement that I
present this annual
report. We have had
an extremely successful
year, and it is my
pleasure to share our
accomplishments. At a
time of faltering
nonprofits and
continued economic uncertainty, we have
flourished and met the demands of our mission
head on. This would not be possible without
our hardworking, professional staff and the
dedication of more than 100 volunteers and
donors. Community support has shown us the
importance of literacy in our area. I am proud of
our students, the part we have played in their
lives, and hope you join me in celebrating their
accomplishments.
Learning for Life,
Donna

Craven Literacy Council provides free instructional services in Craven, Jones and Pamlico counties for
adult residents who lack basic literacy skills and cannot attend programs offered at community
colleges due to their schedule or personal circumstances. Tutors work with their students at least
once a week, using a variety of educational materials and techniques, to improve the students’ skills
and enable them to achieve life and literacy goals. During this fiscal year, students attended 11,223
hours of instruction or an average of 57 hours per student. This hard work has paid off for our
students as 45 learners increased at least one educational functioning level this year.
The Basic Literacy program teaches American-born students reading, writing, math and technological
skills. We also work with individuals who are pursuing their High School Equivalency credential, and
teach financial and health literacies.
CLC’s English as a Second Language (ESL) program teaches foreign-born adults how to listen and
speak English in addition to the basic literacy skills above. The EL/Civics program teaches individuals
English Literacy and United States Civics to prepare students for citizenship. Volunteer tutors meet
with students one-on-one or in small groups.

Volunteers have always been at the heart of CLC. They serve as tutors, trainers, board members, mini
class facilitators and office helpers. In 2013-2014, more than 162 volunteers donated over 15,515
hours to CLC, including 7,405 hours of direct instruction received by students.
In addition to the initial 15-hour training workshop, volunteers are invited to attend several in-services/trainings throughout the year
CLC Volunteer Tutors live our tag line of Learning for Life. In addition to the initial 15-hour workshop
required of all our volunteer tutors, CLC sponsors several in-services and trainings throughout the year.
This year, four new tutor workshops were held graduating 58 volunteer tutors. These volunteers were paired
with students and are given one-on-one support and all the materials they need to tutor successfully. Four inservices were also held. The first was a library tour where tutors were encouraged to explore the resources
available at the Craven County Public Library in New Bern. The Affordable Care Act In-Service in February was
facilitated by Judy Willoughby to help tutors aid their students in understanding the Affordable Care Act. Lisa
Wohlrab of USCIS facilitated a Citizenship Information session in March. Mark Best, Director of Workforce
Readiness at Craven Community College, led a valuable information session on April 24 about the many classes
and opportunities for students and tutors.
CLC celebrated our volunteers at the annual Volunteer Appreciation Dinner on September 26 held at First Baptist
Family Life Center. Numerous volunteers were recognized for the number of hours they have served including
Sammie Caswell who has contributed over 2000 lifetime hours to our organization. Attendees received a sticky
note holder as a small token of our appreciation for all they do for our students and our community.

Daddy Daughter Sweetheart Ball
The Gift of Literacy
The Daddy Daughter Sweetheart Ball is an annual
fundraising event where dads treat their daughters to a
fun night of dancing, dinner and memories. The Ball is
open to all girls grades five and under and their fathers
(or father figures). Tickets were $60 per father/daughter
couple with tickets for additional “daughters” at $25.
The ticket price included a child-adult friendly dinner, DJ
music and dancing, a corsage, tiara, door prize and
souvenir photograph. Jane Peele from Down East Dance
Studios served as MC and dance instructor for the
evening.
The New Bern High School Drill Team
performed two dances and helped pass out door prizes.
The Gift of Literacy is an annual fundraising
appeal timed to coincide with the holiday
season. This year’s mailing was delivered to
more than 1700 residents in our community.
The recipients were encouraged to consider an
alternative to giving conventional holiday gifts.
For a minimum donation of $25.00, CLC sent a
special holiday card to individuals or families
announcing that a Gift of Literacy had been given
to Craven Literacy Council in their honor.

A Message from the Board of Directors
Board of Directors 2014-2015
Learning a new skill is hard for an adult. Those of us who have tried
to learn a second language, play a musical instrument or
participate in a new sport as adults know that nothing comes as
easily as it did when we were kids. Dedication and perseverance
are the only way to make progress with a new skill, and even then
progress may be slow.
JoAnn Kerrick, Chairman
Christopher Bass – Vice-Chairman
Alice Underhill – Secretary
Keith Merritt – Treasurer
So how can we not be inspired by the efforts of the adult learners
who come every day to Craven Literacy Council to improve their
literacy skills? These adults have job and family responsibilities and
still find the time to attend lessons with their CLC tutor and to do
the homework needed to master new literacy skills. Our students
exemplify dedication and perseverance.

Craven Literacy Council delivered over 10,000 hours of literacy
instruction in 2013-2104. All of us associated with CLC—the
students themselves, the staff, the volunteers, the Board, our
donors—can see the successes brought by improved literacy. This
year we’ve seen students gain their US citizenship, students earn a
promotion at work, students able to read to a grandchild when
they were never able to read to their own child. However you
support CLC, know that because of you we are making a difference
in people’s lives and in our community.

The Board quite naturally spends much of its efforts on fundraising
for CLC. It’s easy to get lost in the busyness of one event after
another: stuffing envelopes, asking for sponsorships, selling tickets
and more. The beginning of our fiscal year is a good time to take a
step back and truly appreciate those responsible for the good
accomplished by our organization. Thank you to our students for
showing up and working so hard. Thank you to our volunteers for
giving so unselfishly of your time to help others. Thank you to our
amazing staff for the compassion and professionalism you exhibit
every day. Thank you to our donors for your generous financial
support. We on the Board are proud to be associated with such an
outstanding organization, and we look forward to continued
success in the coming year.

“The Teacher Who Couldn’t Read”
Craven Literacy Council co-sponsored an event that
featured a visit from John Corcoran, “The Teacher Who
Couldn’t Read”, on March 23 at First Presbyterian
Church. New Hope Literacy Task Force arranged the
event to raise awareness for literacy. Those in
attendance heard Mr. Corcoran’s compelling story and
have a new understanding of those who lack basic
literacy skills.
