Development Update
The Anniversary Campaign
Christian Leadership Center
The option to purchase the
Walnut Church property is
extended and the Kentucky
Wesleyan Board of Trustees
voted to continue fund
raising toward the church
property. There is a
scheduled closing date of
September 1, 2008. KWC
Campus Minister Kent
Lewis is the college staff
leader for this campaign and Walnut Memorial Baptist Church building
adjacent to Kentucky Wesleyan campus
is working with a committee
of Methodist ministers and
retired ministers to help raise the necessary funds to purchase the
property. The total cost of the Walnut property is $3.6 million,
including $500,000 earmarked for property renovation.
The Walnut property is a natural site for campus expansion and
includes 3.4 acres adjacent to KWC with a 550-seat sanctuary,
fellowship hall, multiple classrooms and four houses. The property
will be used to create a Christian Leadership Center with a
renewed focus on leadership development at the college. Tentative
plans for the building include housing for campus ministry
programs, music and drama programs, lecture series, classrooms,
retreats, summer camps and community programs.
Lewis said, “The Christian Leadership Center will be more than a
building. We need a strong program in place and have been
working to secure a partnership with the General Board of Higher
Education and Ministry in Nashville. This would make Kentucky
Wesleyan the first United Methodist College to work with the
Methodist Global Education and Leadership Initiative.” Lewis
continued, “The vision is to establish a regional Christian
Leadership Training Center that benefits KWC students as well as
all churches in the Owensboro area.”

In celebration and recognition of the 150th anniversary of Kentucky
Wesleyan College, the college launched a $1.5 million campaign that
will run through December 31, 2008. The campaign focuses on raising
money for student scholarships through the General Scholarship Fund
and endowed scholarships. The Anniversary Campaign – Celebrating
150 Years will give all alumni and friends of the College the opportunity
to help build a strong foundation for the future of Kentucky Wesleyan.
“There is no better way to celebrate Wesleyan’s 150th birthday than to
support scholarships,” said Interim President Michael Fagan. “Your gift
ensures that students continue to earn high quality degrees in a faithbased environment.”
The year 2008 is truly an exciting time in the history of the College and
there is much to be proud of and celebrate. As we reflect on the
achievements of Kentucky Wesleyan College, there is perhaps no better
time to actively prepare for the future. Raising $1.5 million through The
Anniversary Campaign will help support generations of students.
As a bonus, the James Graham Brown Foundation will match 50% of all
new endowment gifts to the College through December 1, 2008. The
Brown match will go to the Brown Endowment Fund, which provides
full tuition scholarships for academically gifted students.
The General Scholarship Fund supports academic, athletic, talent and
church scholarships and benefits 98% of the students at Kentucky
Wesleyan College.
Wayne Foster, chair of the Kentucky Wesleyan Board of Trustees, said,
“A gift to the General Scholarship Fund or to our endowed scholarship
fund is the perfect way to say ‘Happy Birthday, Kentucky Wesleyan.’ A
successful Anniversary Campaign honors our past and expresses a
commitment to our future.”

James Graham Brown
endowment challenge
The James Graham Brown Foundation has issued an exciting
challenge grant for endowment growth to Kentucky Wesleyan
College through December 1, 2008. The Brown Foundation will
match $1 for every $2 raised for the College endowment, up to
a maximum of $1,000,000. The Brown match will go to the
Brown Endowment Fund. Meeting this challenge is an excellent
opportunity to dramatically increase the permanent endowment
at Kentucky Wesleyan College.
We ask your help in meeting the Brown Challenge. The
following are endowed gifts that will meet the Brown Challenge
criteria:
N Make a gift to the endowment fund through The Anniversary
Campaign – Celebrating 150 Years
N Make a gift to an existing endowed fund, including the Brown
Scholarship Fund, or other academic, athletic and talent
endowments at the College
N Establish a new endowed fund in memory of or in honor of a
family member or friend. There is a $10,000 minimum to
establish a new endowed scholarship.
Phonathon tops
$70,000 in pledges
For two weeks in September, 16 Kentucky Wesleyan students called alumni
and friends of the college, sharing campus news and updating information.
They also raised $70,770 in pledges for the General Scholarship Fund from
961 donors, which is the second largest amount pledged in the history of
Phonathon at Kentucky Wesleyan.
The General Scholarship Fund is one of the most critical needs of the
college. Thanks to academic, athletic, talent and church scholarships that
are all supported by your gifts, 98% of our students receive the help they
need to make their college education a reality.
These students recently called alumni during a spring Phonathon to raise
money for The Anniversary Campaign – Celebrating 150 years.

Clayton Daniels became the

2007. Daniels, a Mercer
University graduate, joined the
admissions staff there in 2000 and
became Assistant Vice President of
University Admission in 2004.

committed and engaged students.”

Buxton Johnson, Ph.D., was Professor of
the Year. He taught at Kentucky
Wesleyan from 1995-1999 and returned
in 2000. Johnson graduated from Apollo
High School in 1977, 30 years before
receiving this honor from his students.

Joe Moffett Publishes Book on
the Twentieth-Century Long Poem
Dr. Joe Moffett, assistant professor of English, recently published
“The Search for Origins in the Twentieth-Century Long Poem:
Sumerian, Homeric, and Anglo-Saxon.”
The publisher is West Virginia University Press. Moffett earned
a B.A. in English from Pennsylvania State University and an
M.A. and Ph.D. in English from West Virginia University. He
says the long poem is appealing because it “lacks strict
conventions that govern other genres.” According to the
publisher, “Moffett asks many stimulating questions and also
provides provocative answers.”

an article by
associate professor
of English Tony
Lee, was featured in
Modern Philology.
The humanities
journal is published
quarterly by the
University of
Chicago Press.
Only 50 -75
scholars worldwide specialize in Johnson,
eighteenth-century English essayist, poet,
biographer, lexicographer and critic of English
Literature. Dr. Lee became interested in
Johnson when, as a high school student, he
purchased one of Johnson’s books for a quarter
at K-Mart. He later submitted an essay he
wrote about Johnson and won first place. Lee
earned a B.A. from the University of Texas, an
M.A. from the University of Chicago and a
Ph.D. from the University of Arkansas.
Kelly Moffett
Publishes Book of
Poetry
“Waiting for a Warm
Body to Fill It,” a
debut collection of
poetry by Kelly
Moffett, M.F.A., was
recently published by
Cinnamon Press. The
publisher describes the
work as lucid and
skillful. Moffett is
assistant professor of
Creative Writing and English. She earned a
B.A. from Pennsylvania State University and
an M.A. and M.F.A. from West Virginia
University. She is the forum editor for Review
Revue, co-director for Kentucky’s Retreat for
Women Writers at Kentucky Wesleyan and a
nominee for a Pushcart Prize, the prestigious
literary prize by Pushcart Press.

Moving Forward
New Scholarship and
New Academic Programs
Kentucky Wesleyan College is celebrating the past and preparing our students for the future
with a unique, innovative scholarship and new programs designed to celebrate and encourage success.
Overachiever Award
The College will award a unique scholarship
to students who “overachieve” and exceed
academic expectations. After their freshman
year, KWC students who exceed a predicted
GPA (based on their high school GPA and
ACT scores), will be awarded more financial
aid for their sophomore year. If a student
continues to exceed expectations, he or she
will maintain this extra financial aid for
their junior and senior years.
Faculty and administration strongly believe
students should not be held back by
standardized test scores or past academic
performance. This unorthodox approach is
unusual in higher education. When a
college or university successfully recruits a
student with an academic award, the award
remains constant as tuition increases.
The new Overachiever Award will be
available to this year’s freshman class and
future freshman classes.

Online Degree
Completion Programs
Kentucky Wesleyan will offer two degree
completion programs at reduced tuition rates
beginning in the fall of 2008. The programs,
a B.S. in Business Administration and a B.S.
in General Studies, are intended for students
with at least 65 credit hours.
The General Studies program is designed to
provide an excellent, interdisciplinary
education with flexibility geared to working
adults pursuing a college degree. The
General Studies major explores a variety of
areas with an individually tailored
curriculum, instead of the traditional single
academic major.
MBA Program
The College submitted a proposal to our
accrediting agency for a Master’s in Business
Administration with final approval
anticipated in June.
The program, designed by Dr. Jim Welch
and his colleagues, features eight-week terms
and face-to-face evening classes. The MBA
is designed for working adults.

John Jones Remembers
The Light in the Window
John Jones ’67 describes the evening of January 3,
2000 with emotion. He watched from his office
window as a late afternoon thunderstorm ripped
through Owensboro. What he didn’t know was
that an F-3 tornado had just ransacked the campus
of his alma mater. “We’ve been hit,” said
Kentucky Wesleyan President Wes Poling when
he called Jones at home early that evening.
Jones jumped in his Bronco and carefully made his
way to the campus amid downed trees and power
lines. “It seemed like God had unfurled a huge
black sheet over the city,” he says. There were no
lights anywhere except the beams of his
headlights. Inspection of the campus revealed
significant damage to every building with roofs
blown across campus, trees uprooted and debris in
unlikely places. “Our college looked like a war
zone,” he says. “It was an eerie and heartbreaking
sight.”
An Owensboro native, Jones’ relationship to the
college began long before the night of the tornado.
He earned his degree from Kentucky Wesleyan in
1967 with a major in business and a minor in
psychology. He was a faculty member for eight
years and became a college trustee, the youngest to
ever serve, in 1972.
Family members and friends describe Jones as a
devoted family man and church member, avid
hunter and fisherman, and car and motorcycle
enthusiast. He is president and CEO of Modern
Welding Company, Inc., an Owensboro-based
family-owned business founded by his grandfather,
“Mr. Pete” Barnard in 1932.
Johnny and his wife of 46 years, Sylvia, have two
grown children, Jeff and Julie. They both live in

No one can keep up with this Jones, according to
his friends and family. “Johnny has unbelievable
energy and enthusiasm and curiosity,” says longtime friend Wayne Foster. “You can’t bring up any
subject he doesn’t know something about, and he
remembers details from years ago like no one I’ve
ever known.” Foster and others say what they
most admire about John Jones is something he
doesn’t want people to know. “He never seeks
accolades,” says Foster, “but he quietly does so
many things for so many people.”
When Jones reflects on the upcoming celebration
of KWC’s sesquicentennial, he talks about the
college’s rich heritage as a private, faith-based
institution. And he remembers that January night
in 2000. “I think about how absolutely dark it was
as Wes and I explored the campus,” he says.
“Then we saw the light in the window.”
What they saw was the battery-operated light in
the cupola. The weather-vane was askew, but
Jones says the light was a sign of hope in the
darkness. He sometimes looks up at the familiar
cupola today and remembers that night. He says
the cupola is a beloved college symbol that means
more to him now that it did before the tornado. “I
see it as a symbol of how Wesleyan has survived
and thrived through many challenges in the last
150 years.”

The National Football Foundation announced the selection of Kentucky
Wesleyan College student-athletes Josh Abell, Clay Durham and Todd Hollis to
their inaugural National Honor Society to recognize their accomplishments in the
classroom by maintaining a 3.2 grade point average or better.
Abell, a 5-foot-8, 268-pound offensive guard from Louisville,
started 10 of 11 games played. He is a junior history major.
Durham, a 6-foot-2, 207-pound defensive end from Owensboro,
finished fifth in total tackles with 43 and started all 11 games. He is a
junior physical education major with a health emphasis.
Hollis, a 6-foot-2, 270-pound offensive center from Louisville,
started all seven games played at center. He is a senior criminal justice
major with a minor in political science.
”The inaugural class of the Honor Society contains an

The selection took place during the
recent College Sports Information
Directors of America (CoSIDA)
convention in San Diego.
Pickerill holds the longest tenure of
any SID in KWC history as he enters his
20th year. He has the distinction of being
the first and only SID from the State of
Kentucky inducted into the CoSIDA Hall
of Fame (1999).
Basketball back in national spotlight

Todd Lee, returned to national prominence
after a four-year absence by compiling a 24-8
record, a tie for the GLVC East Division title,
several weeks in the Top 25 ranking, and a
record breaking 34th trip to the NCAA
tournament. This marked the 98th season in
KWC basketball history. Accolades and honors
for 2008 include:
Team honors
• The Panthers earned a first place tie with
Northern Kentucky for the GLVC East
Division title. This is the Panthers’ first since
the divisional set-up started in 2006.
• The 24 wins tied for the fourth most in
regular season history.
• KWC earned their 23rd 20-win season in
history with an 81-63 victory against
Indianapolis on February 7.
• The Panthers earned a spot in the Top 25 for
the first time since December 16, 2003, when
they were ranked No. 24 on February 5.
• KWC returned to the NCAA Great Lakes
Region rankings for the first time since
March 2004, on Jan. 30.
• The Panthers guaranteed their 71st winning
season in history with a 77-69 win over SIU
Edwardsville on Jan. 24.
• The team produced winning streaks of nine
and eight games during the season.
• The Panthers posted the second best season
field goal percentage (51.3) and free throw
percentage (76.0).
• KWC collected two wins over nationally
ranked teams with a 68-67 win over No. 7
Drury on February 2 and a 63-60 victory
against No. 13 Metro State in the Disney
West Classic in November.

Alex Temple selected first-team
Nine Kentucky Wesleyan College Panthers were named to the All-Great Lakes Football
Conference team as voted on by league coaches.
Alex Temple, a senior defensive end from Crestwood, received first-team honors. He led KWC
with six sacks and 15 tackles for loss yards along with fourth best 44 tackles in 11 starts. He finished
as the all-time leader in sacks with 31.5 and tackles for loss with 65.
Earning second-team honors were wide receivers DaMarcus Ganaway and Josh Smith.
Ganaway, a sophomore from Indianapolis, Ind. caught a team best 47 passes for 605 yards for
three touchdowns.
Smith, a junior from O'Fallon, Ill. collected a second best 39 receptions for 521 yards for a team
high five touchdowns.
Receiving GLFC honorable mention recognition were Clay Durham, Greg Embers, Kenneth
Lewis, Josh Abell, Matt Grey and Joel Lopez.
Durham, a senior linebacker from Owensboro, led the Panthers with 82 tackles and had 3.5
tackles for loss, two sacks, one interception, two pass breakups, one forced fumble and two fumble
recoveries including a 50-yard touchdown return.
Embers, a junior strong safety from Louisville, finished second in tackles with 73.5 and tackles
for loss with 12. He also recorded two sacks, one interception, one pass breakup, four forced fumbles
and two recoveries.
Lewis, a senior defensive tackle from Louisville, had 15.5 tackles and 2.5 tackles for loss.
Abell, a senior center from Louisville, Grey, a senior offensive tackle from Manassas Park, Va.,
Lopez, a junior offensive guard from Radcliff started all 11 contests.

TIES THAT BIND
Two Campuses, Two Generations
The Winchester Class of 1944 gathered around
big cabinet radios to catch the news and listen to
the latest music. The Owensboro Class of 2009
relies on the Internet, iPODS and cable TV. So
what do Luellen Pyles ’44 and Matt Ruark ’09
have in common?
Pyles, who earned a degree in Latin with minors
in Spanish, German and Business Studies, grew
up on the Winchester campus. Her father,
Henry Milton Pyles ’22*, taught at the college
for 42 years. According to his daughter, Prof
Pyles knew how to multi-task long before the
term was a popular buzz word. Pyles not only
taught, he also served as registrar for 25 years and
was director of alumni and academic dean. Her
mother, Nell Ball Pyles, served the college in
various capacities for 43 years, including many
years as secretary to the president.
Luellen Pyles attended her first college class as a
two-year old with a student babysitter. As a grade
school student, she sat on books piled in a chair
to type alumni reports for her mother. “Everyone
knew everyone on campus, and so many made so
many sacrifices for KWC,” she says. “I look back,
and know I was in the presence of greatness when
I was growing up.”
Pyles says 80 students initially enrolled in her
class at Wesleyan. But there were only 19 who
graduated in 1944. “I went to college during the
war years, and so many were drafted,” she says.
“It was a tough time for everyone.” After
graduation, she taught in high schools in
Kentucky and Ohio and earned her master’s
degree in Spanish from the University of
Kentucky in 1950. She then became executive
vice president of a Cincinnati marketing firm
where she did advertising and consumer research
for 25 years. She developed innovative research
methods that are still in use today, and she
opened branch offices in five foreign countries.
She joined the KWC Board of Trustees in 1972.
“I’ve always felt that my job on this earth was to
help the college,” she says. She began hosting
receptions for prospective students in the 1950s.
Luellen Pyles speaks with great affection about
Kentucky Wesleyan. “I walk around the campus
alone today and get tearful. I think of the
generosity of so many people, and I think of the
thousands of graduates who became good citizens
and made great contributions.”
Matt Ruark, a political science major, says that
as a high school student, he struggled with the
choice of a college. Pyles invited him to a
banquet for prospective students, their parents
and alumni in Maysville. “It was through the
influence of Miss Luellen that I made the
decision to attend Wesleyan,” he says.
When she is in Owensboro for meetings and
campus events, Miss Luellen takes Matt and
other students to the Moonlite for dinner. She
also checks in with Matt about once a month by
phone. He laughs when he shares that their daily
schedules are a little different. “One morning she
called me at 7:49 and woke me from a deep sleep.
That was great, because I had an 8:30 class I
would have missed. I think she had been up for
hours.”
Pyles talks about Matt Ruark with a sparkle in
her eye. “We’re going to hear from him; he’s
going places,” she says with a chuckle. Matt says
of Miss Luellen, “I love her like a grandmother.
She is the grandmother I never knew.”

Marcia Smith Lawrence, a KWC trustee, was
honored by the Hindman, Ky. Settlement School
for her service on the board of directors and for
going “above and beyond ”to support the school.
She was instrumental in raising funds for the Folk
Artist-in-Residence program which provides

Margaret Blanton Reeves on September 1, 2006,
in Paris, TN at the age of 103. She was born
October 20, 1903 and was the oldest known
KWC alumna. In an interview in the Spring
2001 Kentucky Wesleyan Today college magazine,
Mrs. Reeves said, “The commute to the KWC
Winchester campus from Paris, Tenn. took two
days.”

E. Kirk Owens on April 29, 2007, in Elizaville,
Ky. He was employed by United States Rubber
Company (later Uniroyal). He was preceded in
death by his wife of 67 years, Frances Downing
Williams Owens ’37 on April 15, 2007. Survivors

Boyd Cecil on September 10, 2007, in Texas. He
served in WWII with the Air Force and was
assigned to the 8th Air Force, 384th B-17 Bomber
Group based in England. He completed 25
bombing missions including the first two daylight
raids on Berlin. He later served in the Korean
War. Boyd had a long career in the oil industry
and retired from Exxon in 1978 after more than
30 years of service. He loved raising registered
Hereford cattle at Boyd Cecil Ranch in Flatonia,
Tex. Survivors include sons, Allen and William;
three granddaughters; sisters, Martha ChapmanFox, Isabelle Charlotte Hawkins and Mary-Jo
Reynolds; and brothers, Charles and Bill Cecil.
Lillian Patrick Jordan on April 9, 2007, in
Lexington, Ky. She was a member of Southern
Hills United Methodist Church. Survivors
include son, Michael Allen Jordan of Dalton,
Ga.; daughter, Patricia Jordan White of
Lexington; and four grandchildren.
H. Paul Osborne on November 12, 2007, in
Wichita, Kan. He earned a masters of divinity
degree from Lexington Theological Seminary,
was ordained a Methodist minister and later
ordained to the priesthood of the Episcopal
Church and received his M.A. degree in 1955.
He was a member of the Masonic Order for over
50 years. He served churches in many states
including Kentucky, Texas and Kansas. Survivors
include his wife of 71 years, Gladys Jones
Osborne ’39; daughter Ann; son John; and eight
grandchildren.
Jane McConnell Sanders on September 23,
2007, in Mt. Washington, Ky. She was a retired
teacher and elementary supervisor in the
Crittenden, Bullitt and Jefferson County Public
Schools where she worked for 34 years. She was
a member of Davidson Memorial United
Methodist Church and taught Sunday school for
over 40 years. She was the 1987 Citizen of the
Year for the Bullitt County Chamber of
Commerce. Survivors include her husband of 70
years, Foster J. Sanders ’36; children, Barbara
Longacre of Shepherdsville, Ky. and Foster J.
Sanders Jr. of Charlotte, N.C.; and five
grandchildren.

Ardennes OffenBill Kincaid ’47

service during the Battle of the Bulge. He also
helped defend the Ludendorff Bridge at
Remagen, Germany. His high school teaching
career in Covington, Indian Hill and Ludlow
spanned nearly 40 years. He was sponsor of the
school newspaper at Indian Hill where he also
served as golf coach for many years. He received
the Indian Hill Award of Distinction, and the
Cincinnati Enquirer named him Coach of the
Year in 1976. He was a member of the Ohio
High School Golf Coaches Association Hall of
Fame. He was a 17-year volunteer for the
Cincinnati Association for the Blind and Visually
Impaired and was named Volunteer of the Year
by the association in 2000. Survivors include his
wife of 60 years, Mildred Poe Kincaid ’46,
Sycamore Township; three sons, Geoffrey,
Knoxville, Tenn., Stephen, Alloway, N.J., and
Scott, Mason, Ohio; brother, Gayle Kincaid ’51,
Winchester, Ky.; four grandchildren and one
great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by
his brother, Gene Kincaid ’50, on November 3,
2007.

Leonard Harsh on September 28, 2007, in Fort
Myers, Fla. He was a veteran of the Army Air
Force. He was sports editor for the Fort Myers
News-Press and retired after 23 years. He began a
new career with the U.S. Post Office and retired
in 1987. He was actively involved with Little
League, Pop Warner football and youth
basketball. He was a member of Wesley Memorial
United Methodist Church. Survivors include
three children, Linda Strauser of Arizona,
Marjorie Hefke and Richard Harsh, both of Fort
Myers. His sister, Marjorie Harsh Wells ’42, died
on October 10, 2007.

Gene Kincaid on November 3, 2007 in
Winchester. He was former mayor of Winchester
and was named Citizen of the Year by the
Chamber of Commerce in 1991. He was a former
U. S. Marine and an ordained deacon at
Emmanuel Episcopal Church. Survivors include
his wife, Elaine; sons, Craig of Riley, N.C. and
Doug of Winchester; three grandchildren; and
brother Gayle Kincaid ’51 of Winchester.

in Winchester. She was owner and operator of
Suzanne’s Weddings for 30 years and a member of

Gerry Hearin on February 17, 2007. He lived in
Birmingham, Ala. He was a Methodist minister
and received his B.D. from Emory University
Candler School of Theology. Survivors include
his wife, June Fitzpatrick Hearin ’54.
Clarence “Rusty” Shearer on September 9, 2007,
in Lexington. He was a retired postmaster for the
U.S. Postal Service in Winchester and an
employee of the Meadowbrook Golf Course in
Lexington. He was also a Korean War Army
veteran and a member of Central Baptist Church
in Winchester. Survivors include his wife, Sally
Shearer; son Brian Shearer of Bourbon County,
Ky.; daughter, Diane May of Winchester; two
granddaughters; brother, Marcus Shearer ’47 of
Louisville; and sister Evelyn Powell of
Winchester.

William “Bill” Walker on November 6, 2007, in
Louisville. He was the owner of Walker Dental
Specialties and a master director with Oxyfresh.

where he earned five gold medals. He was also a
61-year member of Crescent Hill United
Methodist Church. Survivors include his wife,
Carol Burton Walker ’56; son, David Walker;

Walker; and three grandchildren.

John Lovell Sr. on September 11, 2007, in
Owensboro. He earned his masters degree from
the University of Tennessee. A retired teacher,
he taught in Knoxville, Bullitt County and
Muhlenberg County. He was a field service
representative for Title III at Western Kentucky
University and was employed with banks in
Muhlenberg County for several years. He was an
Air Force veteran, serving during the Korean
War. Survivors include his wife of 35 years,
Chrystalee Martin Lovell; son, John Gardner
Lovell III ’00; and sister, Annie Abbott, all of
Greenville.

Frank Rickman Snyder on March 4, 2007. He
was a former chair of the Scott County Board of
Education and retired director of fiscal and
benefits services for Georgetown College. In
addition to KWC, he was a graduate of
Georgetown College, University of Kentucky,
University of Louisville and Western Kentucky
University. He was a member of Faith Baptist
Church and was a U.S. Army veteran of the
Korean War. Survivors include his wife, Ruth
Snyder; children, Dana Kay Snyder of Cincinnati
and Frank Rickman Snyder II of Georgetown;
three grandchildren; and brother, William
Preston Snyder of Knoxville, Tenn.

A veteran of the Marine Corps, Jim worked for
General Electric, owned and operated Jim’s
Hardware in Columbia and continued with
MPD, where he was manager for scheduling and
procurement. He was an active member of St.
John United Methodist Church. Survivors
include his wife, Dee Brown Ranson; daughters,
Sondra Ranson Jones ’87 of Owensboro, Stacy
Hughbanks of Pee Wee Valley and Jennifer
Higgins of Beijing, China; parents, Harford and
Emma Bell Ranson of Owensboro; stepchildren,
Crystal Livers and Kyle Reed, both of
Owensboro; sister, Sharon Ranson Sauer ’68 of

2007, in Owensboro. She earned her masters
degree from Western Kentucky University and
spent most of her teaching career in the
Owensboro City Schools. She was a member of
Zion United Church of Christ and the

two of the first Friendship Force tours. Survivors

Sharon Starr Law Duckwall on August 30, 2007,
in Owensboro. She was a systems analyst and
programmer and a member of Maceo Baptist
Church where she taught Sunday School and
played the piano. Survivors include her husband
of 25 years, David Duckwall; sons, David and
Casey; daughter, Alana Troutman; four
grandchildren; sister, Pauline Law of Owensboro;
and brothers, Tommie Law of Owensboro and

Ollie Crowe Purcell on August 24, 2007, in
Owensboro. She was a teacher’s aide at Lincoln
Elementary School and a classroom instructor at
Seven Hills Elementary School. She retired from
the Earle C. Clements Job Corps as a career
systems development academic instructor.
Survivors include children, Leslie Crowe Jr.,
Dorothy Flowers, Bobbie Crowe, Anna Ophelia
Haire, Sharon Owens and Kenneth Crowe, all of
William Blake Hundley on April 28, 2007, in
Owensboro. He was a KWC groundskeeper from
1977 to 1984. He was a member of the
Emmanuel Seventh Day Adventist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Lou Hundley; son,

Hundley of Hinesville, Ga.
Wayne Metz on April 11, 2007, in Owensboro.
He was an Associate Professor Emeritus of
History and Political Science and taught at KWC
from 1972 until 1987. He was an ordained
Episcopal priest, an Army veteran of World War
II and a member of Trinity Episcopal Church.
Survivors include four sons.
Gil Whittenberg on January 18, 2007, in
Louisville. He was a KWC trustee from 1959 to
1980 and received an honorary doctorate from
Kentucky Wesleyan. A graduate of the
University of Kentucky, he served as a lieutenant
in the Air Force. Gil was owner and CEO of
Whittenberg Engineering and Construction
Company and was responsible for restoring the
historic Seelbach Hotel in Louisville. He was a
member of St. Paul United Methodist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Gayle Ford
Whittenberg; daughters, Kathleen Reed and
Deborah Feireisel; three grandchildren; and
stepdaughter, Caroline Root.

Kentucky Wesleyan College Giving Societies
These societies recognize persons contributing to the college from July 1, 2006 through
June 30, 2007. Each society honors the rich heritage of Kentucky Wesleyan College.
Founders Society
$25,000 and above
Honors the founding of Kentucky Wesleyan College
in 1858 when the Kentucky Conference of the
Methodist Episcopal Church – South resolved to
found a college, beginning a tradition of excellence in
higher education which continues today.
Trustee Associates Society
$10,000 - $24,999
Honors the trustees of the college for their
commitment to the academic, financial and social
welfare of Kentucky Wesleyan College. Appointed in
1958, The Reverend William Creighton Dandy
served as the first chair of the board at the college.
Presidents Associates Society
$5,000 - $9,999
Honors the 30 presidents of Kentucky Wesleyan
College for their contributions to the growth and
development of the college. Appointed in 1866, The
Reverend Charles Taylor was the first president of the
college. Membership in this society is an investment
in our future leaders.
Faculty Associates Society
$2,500 to $4,999
Honors the prestigious faculty members of Kentucky
Wesleyan College who, through their loyalty to the
college and dedication to their profession, enhance
the liberal arts experience for our future leaders.
Owensboro Society
$1,000 to $2,499
Honors the community and alumni of the
Owensboro, Kentucky campus. In 1951 Owensboro
became the third and current location of the college.
Winchester Society
$500 - $999
Honors the community and alumni of the
Winchester, Kentucky campus, the second location of
the college from 1890 – 1951. The 60-year
Winchester period nurtured the college during World
Wars I and II and the Depression and continues to do
so through the support of alumni and friends from the
Winchester era.
Millersburg Society
$250 - $499
Honors the first home of the college from its founding
in 1858 through 1890. Millersburg, Kentucky was the
site of the first Kentucky Wesleyan graduation, a class
of one, in 1868.
Minerva Society
$100 - $249
Honors the spirit of giving symbolized by Minerva,
the decorative sculpture from the Administration
Building on the Winchester campus. Through the
generous donations of Winchester residents and other
Kentucky Wesleyan friends, the Administration
Building was rapidly rebuilt after it was destroyed by
fire in 1905. Today Minerva resides on the
Owensboro campus, reminding us of this generosity.
Heritage Society

Calling All Alumni!
The purpose of the Alumni Association Board is to
promote the interests of Kentucky Wesleyan College
and to establish mutually beneficial relations between
the College and the Alumni, and to perpetuate
continuing friendships and fellowship among alumni.
Other duties consist of attending Alumni Association
meetings held on campus at least twice a year and
making an annual gift to the College.
Each year, we elect five new directors to serve on the

Recent Graduate is New Director of Alumni
Lauren Werner ’05 became the new Director of Alumni on
January 2. She graduated cum laude with a Bachelor of Science
Degree in Communications and a minor in Business Administration
in 2005. While a student, Lauren was active in Kappa Delta
Sorority, PanHellenic President, Senator for Student Government
Association, President of Admissions Ambassadors and a member of
Oak and Ivy. She is currently pursuing a Master’s Degree from

Introducing the Outstanding Young Graduate Award
This first-time award will be presented to a Kentucky Wesleyan graduate. A nomination
form is located on the alumni web page (click Alumni Awards). To qualify for the Young
Graduate Award, a nominee must have graduated from the College in the last fifteen years
and distinguishes him/herself through:
• Professional or personal achievement.
• Outstanding leadership in their profession and community.
• Making contributions that reflect well on the College.
• Inspiring others in the Kentucky Wesleyan community.
• Demonstrating continued interest and/or contact with the College.
