Foreword
Next year will mark the 20th anniversary of my first visit to Cambodia. I remember the first trip like it was
yesterday. Tourists were rarely seen at that time so when I set up my large camera on the causeway to the
Angkor Wat, I was alone. After spending a good amount of time under my dark cloth composing a picture,
I emerged to find myself surrounded by a group of children with big, curious eyes looking at me and
inspecting my photography equipment. I was astonished to see some of the children were missing limbs,
disfigured by landmines, and yet they were all smiling, with bright eyes, at a visitor.
I began looking into the local government hospital and soon realized that it was nearly impossible for a family
to seek medical treatment if they were not wealthy. I encountered a scene of a father who, having spent all
his money for the journey to the hospital and unable to pay for treatment, looked helplessly on as his little
girl passed away lying in a hospital bed. That’s when I decided to build Angkor Hospital for Children (AHC), a
children’s hospital, with compassionate staff that would treat every child, regardless of their financial situation.
The development of Cambodia, especially in Siem Reap, has been amazing: a quiet, ancient capital has
become a popular tourist destination and Cambodians have swiftly adapted to the ever changing economy.
So, too, is the progress that our staff has made since AHC opened in 1999. It started with only a handful
of doctors and nurses working with several expat medical professionals to learn basic medical skills and
knowledge. As AHC has gradually expanded over the years, the staff have become competent in their work,
turning into excellent role models and the leaders of the next generation of Cambodia’s healthcare system.
A world-class Cambodian hospital for Cambodians by Cambodians, has always been our ultimate goal.
Thanks to the tireless efforts of the phenomenal staff and volunteers at AHC, I have proudly watched the
hospital grow from infancy to adolescence. I’m happy to announce that AHC is about to enter into the next
phase of its life and will take a big step in 2013 toward the eventual goal of becoming an independent entity.
It is a very exciting moment.
It has been an amazing journey and it would not have been possible without the wonderful supporters of
our signature event, the photo auction. This annual charity event started fifteen years ago in the Howard
Greenberg Gallery, a strong partner from the beginning. Year after year, hundreds of artists have donated
their work, committee members have worked hard to improve the event, and the audience has been making
successful bids — all to support our cause. I cannot express to you how much it means to me to see so
many caring and generous people come together to keep this dream alive, proving every year that “Art can
Make a Difference.” I would like to take this opportunity to express my deepest gratitude for your generosity.

Founder, Friends Without A Border
LOOKING back, Looking ahead
Since its inception, AHC has steadily grown with the help of knowledgeable, dedicated staff, and caring donors. When the hospital
opened its doors in 1999, patients were successfully treated with
only an outpatient department. In 2001, outreach programs focusing
on preventive care and health promotion were launched, followed by a Medical Education Center in 2004 and an Intensive
Care Unit in 2006. In 2010, the AHC Satellite was established to give healthcare options to patients and their families in
remote villages and to lessen complications that could arise from the long journey to AHC.
Also in 2011, Friends partnered with The Lake Clinic, an innovative boat-based
medical distribution system for the dispossessed and neglected floating villages
on the Tonle Sap, Southeast Asia’s largest lake. Established by founding
AHC director Jon Morgan, The Lake Clinic utilizes specially outfitted watercraft
to travel for up to six days at a time to reach families and children who might
otherwise not have the means to travel to AHC for treatment.
The seed of an idea that was planted in 1993, when Kenro Izu, Friends and AHC
founder, first visited Cambodia and realized the desperate need for high-quality
medical care for children, has evolved into a successful model that is respected throughout Cambodia and the international
medical and philanthropic communities. As AHC works toward self-reliance and self-governance, Friends has begun
exploratory visits to neighboring countries so that we can bring the same level of knowledge, treatment, and compassionate
care to the underserved children of Southeast Asia.
So many dedicated and loyal friends have given their support to further Friends
Without A Border’s cause of healing children, healing Cambodia, especially in the
arts and photography communities. Members of these communities are essential to AHC’s success and to making the annual Friends of Friends Photography
Auction a fantastic event and an important financial resource for the hospital.
We would like to take this opportunity to thank all the photographers, galleries,
and collectors who have contributed to the 15th Annual Friends of Friends
Photography Auction. With this special 15th anniversary, Friends will surpass a
cumulative total of $2 million raised by the auctions over the past 15 years. We thank the artists whose photographs make
the auction possible; our generous donors who provide essential support; committee members who give so much of
their time, energy, and talent to the event; and, of course, a sincere thank you to everyone who attends the auction. Your
support makes a spectacular difference to so many people on the other side of the world.

In 2011, Friends Without A Border and Angkor Hospital for Children
marked a very special milestone - near the very end of the year, the
hospital treated its one millionth patient when 11-month-old Alya was
brought to the hospital seeking treatment for a bad case of stomach
flu. Her mother told the staff, “We trust the care that the doctors give
here at AHC. The medicine always works and the staff is kind.” The
smiles of the mother and her daughter as they left the hospital say it all!

Artist’s Statement on the Series:
A child’s ordinary bedtime routine is often times incomplete without the parent’s
feigned search for the scary monsters that lurk under the bed and in the closet,
accompanied by the comforting reassurance that every dark crevice is vacant of
evil. All too often however, such a reassurance is not entirely true. Real monsters
don’t hide in the closet, they hide at the bedside under the guise of a guardian
and blur their violence or anger under the pretense of love, discipline, or trust.
Monsters in the Closet depicts how child abuse is veiled from society by the fog
of lies abusive parents tell to their children, themselves, and to the world.

Village, Okinawa, Japan. Self-taught in photography,
Kawada’s first photographic success was in the
contest of Camera Monthly magazine (1952),
which was judged by Ken Domon and Ihei Kimura. He was one of the founders of the VIVO group.
His monograph, The Last Cosmology received
annual awards from the Photographic Society of
Japan and the Higashikawa Prize (1996).

“Upon first arriving in New York in 1974, I did the tourist thing. Eventually I visited the Natural History Museum, where I made a curious discovery: the stuffed
animals positioned before painted backdrops looked
utterly fake, yet by taking a quick peek with one eye
closed, all perspective vanished, and suddenly they
looked very real. I’d found a way to see the world as a
camera does. However fake the subject, once photographed, it’s as good as real.”

Based in Tokyo, Japan since 1993, James Whitlow Delano has photographed throughout Asia, Latin America and Africa. He balances his
time between magazine assignments, projects on social issues, and creating fine-art images.
Delano is drawn to Asia because it does not turn away a stranger, who moves on instinct with a Leica camera. “I have lived several lifetimes in
two decades without beginning to quench my curiosity.”
His finely-crafted black and white images have been extensively exhibited throughout Europe, North America, Asia and Australia, and is in the
collections of Museum of Fine Arts Houston, Museum of Photographic Arts, La Triennale di Milano Fine Arts Museum, and Museo Fotografia
Contemporanea. His work regularly appears in publications such as the
New York Times Magazine, Newsweek, GEO, and Time, among many
others. Delano has been cited with the Alfred Eisenstadt Award from
the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism/Life Magazine,
NPPA’s Best of Photojournalism, Leica’s Oskar Barnack, and Picture of
the Year International, among others.

health consequences due to the procedure, most Afar
girls look forward to their “salot” (circumcision ceremony).
They emerge from the ceremony with renewed respect
in the community and are then, and only then, eligible for
marriage. An uncircumcised female would bring shame
to herself and her entire family. Before the elders voted
to end female circumcision in Awash Fontale essentially
100% of girls were circumcised before the age of 12.

How to place absentee and phone bids
Even if you are not able to physically attend the 15th annual Friends
of Friends Photography Auction on December 4, 2012, you will be
able to bid on photographs and books by filling out the absentee/
phone bid form and mailing or faxing it to Friends Without A Border by
3:00pm EST on December 4.
The auctioneer will accept bids from those present at the auction in
addition to absentee and phone bids. Live bids may be executed
lower than the top bid you place. If matching bids are entered by two
or more parties, the first bid received by Friends will take precedence.
Friends staff, board members and volunteers may bid at the auction for
themselves, or they may execute bids for absentees.
Absentee and phone bids must be submitted in advance with valid
credit card information. In the case that the absentee bid is successful
the credit card will be charged on the night of the auction. Placing an
absentee bid is considered authorization for this transaction.
To place a phone bid, please indicate this on your bid form. Please note
that phone bids can be placed only for live lots, and that volunteers
helping with phone bids cannot facilitate placing bids on silent lots.
You must provide us with a phone number where you can be reached
on the night of the auction, Tuesday December 4, 2012 from 6:00 to
8:30pm EST, and the lots that you are interested in bidding on. In case
of any problem with phone lines, we advise you to provide emergency
bids on the form. You will be contacted one hour before your first lot will
be auctioned and you will be bidding live via telephone with other bidders
during the live auction.
Important Notice
Admission and a paddle number for the auction is $50. Payment by
check or cash is preferred. Those who order the special print by Wendy
Sacks, available for $500, are entitled to free admission.
Payment for all work is due the night of the auction, without exception.
All property is “as is.” Neither Friends Without A Border nor the artist
makes any express or implied warranty or representation as to the
condition of any lot offered in the auction, and no statement made at
any time, whether oral or written, shall constitute such a warranty or
representation. Descriptions of condition are not warranties. Accordingly,
all lots should be viewed personally by prospective bidders to evaluate
the condition of the property offered in the auction. Please feel free to
contact Friends for a report on the condition of any prints. Be reminded
that each lot is “as is” and all transactions are final. Unless a lot is
identified as part of a limited edition, no edition limit should be assumed.
Unless a lot is identified as having been printed in a certain year, no date
of printing can be guaranteed. The highest bidder acknowledged by
the auctioneer will obtain the item: in the event of any dispute between
bidders, the auctioneer will have final discretion and his record shall be
binding and conclusive. If the auctioneer decides that any opening bid is
below the value of the article offered, he may reject the bid and withdraw
the article from the auction.
