Arts of Japan - Japanese Art Dealers Association
Arts of Japan Asia Week New York 2013 President’s Message O n behalf of the members of the Japanese Art Dealers Association, I would like to welcome you to the twenty-first edition of Asia Week. The event started in New York in 1992 and soon grew to include two art fairs, a version in London, and a smaller edition held in September. JADA 2013: An Exhibition by the Japanese Art Dealers Association Changes in the world’s economy and New York’s ever-shifting commercial real estate leases have led to the cancellation of the fairs, yet Asia Week is more robust – if more decentralized – than ever. This year over 50 prominent galleries are taking part in Asia Week, including JADA’s five members and seven affiliated dealers from three continents. Momoyama Style! Ukrainian Institute of America 2 East 79 St., New York, NY 10075 March 16, 11 am – 5 pm March 17 – 20, 11 am – 6 pm Attributed to Kano Tanyu (1602-1674); Pines (detail); pair of six-panel gold leaf Japanese screens; 17th century; H. 67 x W. 146 in. each (165 x 365 cm). Japanese Art Dealers Association Dedicated to the Traditional Fine Arts of Japan www.jada-ny.org The Japanese Art Dealers Association (JADA) was established in 2002 to highlight the traditional arts of Japan. Our interests range from archaeological works to those made in the early decades of the twentieth century. In keeping with our mission, we encourage scholarship in the field of Japanese art and have co-sponsored lectures and symposia at the Asian Art Museum of San Francisco, Asia Society, the Frick Collection for the History of Collecting, and Japan Society. This March, we are holding our seventh collaborative exhibition, JADA 2013: An Exhibition by the Japanese Art Dealers Association, which is accompanied by a smaller show, Momoyama Style!, which looks at some exceptional works of art from the period many consider Japan’s Renaissance and its influence on later works. In addition, several of our members are holding concurrent exhibitions at their galleries during Asia Week 2013. This guide focuses on Asia Week activities involving Japanese art, including notable exhibitions at Japan Society and the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Should you misplace the guide, information is available for smart phones on our website, www.jada-ny.org. We hope you will have the opportunity to explore many of the important Japanese works of art that will be presented during Asia Week. Sebastian Izzard President, JADA In Memoriam: Mary Griggs Burke T he remarkable, inspiring Mary Griggs Burke passed away in December at age 96 in New York City. Few collectors in any field or in any period were as sensitive and insightful as Mrs. Burke. Over the course of a lifetime, beginning during her years in graduate school, Mrs. Burke dedicated herself to discerning and appreciating the subtleties, nuances, and remarkable beauty of Japanese art. She was also exceptionally generous in sharing her knowledge, her love of art, and her breathtaking collection of over 1,000 works, from 3000 BC to the 19th century: a span of five millennia. The Metropolitan Museum of Art exhibited works from her collection in 1976 and again in 2000. In 1985, works from her collection were shown at the Tokyo National Museum; it was the first collection from the West to be exhibited there. As generous as she was gracious, Mrs. Burke in 2006 announced that she would be bequeathing her collection to the Met and to the Minneapolis Institute of the Arts. While Mrs. Burke will be greatly missed, her great achievements will be commemorated forever and enjoyed by millions of people in the generations to come. Mary Burke receiving the Order of the Sacred Treasure, Gold and Silver Star, from the Japanese government, in April of 1987. The presenter is Ambassador Hidetoshi Ukawa, Consul General of Japan to New York, at the time. Highlights include a superb pair of screens by Kawanabe Kyo- sai (1831–1889) and black-and-white photographs from the celebrated Solitude of Ravens series by the late Fukase Masahisa (1934–2012). Displays of paintings are juxtaposed with examples of modern and contemporary textiles, ceramics, lacquerware, and bamboo art. Drawn mostly from the Metropolitan’s own collection, the exhibition includes important recent acquisitions as well as some 15 major loans from private collections. The exhibition is made possible by The Miriam and Ira D. Wallach Foundation.
