ThisdayhasbecomeanotherspecialTorotraditioncelebrating studentsfromacrosstheuniversityastheyrevealthedepthsoftheir scholarshipandresearchinavastarrayofdisciplines. Itistheculminationofhoursuponhoursofhardworkasstudents presentthefindingsandlessonsfromtheirresearch.Fromtheir initialinquiriestotheirfinalpresentations,studentslearnagreatdealabouttheirsubjects andagreatdealaboutthemselves.Inparticular,theylearnthevaluesofpatience,persistence andtheimportanceofhavingaplanandaprocesstoreachtheunderstandingandanswers they’reseeking. Conductingoutstandingresearchisanacquiredandcollaborativeskill,soIwanttothankallof thefacultymentors,staff,judgesandfellowstudentswhohaveguidedandencouragedour researchersontheirimportantjourneys.Yourinputandfeedbackhaveallowedourstudent researcherstoshine. We’reproudtosaythatStudentResearchDaycontinuestogrow.Thisyearwehave320separatepresentations andposters,representingtheworkof455students,makingthisthelargestStudentResearchDayever. Havingreadalloftheabstractssubmittedforlastyear’sStudentResearchDayaswellasthisyear’s,wecanalso saythatthequalityofthepresentationsasincreasedaswellasthequantity. Themostcreditforthisgoes,ofcourse,toallofourstudentpresenters,whoputlonghoursofthoughtand effortintotheirpresentations.IsaacNewtononcefamouslysaid,“IfIhaveseenfurther,itisbystandingonthe shouldersofgiants.”WithallduerespecttoSirIsaac,wedon’tthinkthat’sreallyhowtheadvanceofhuman knowledgeworks.Allofus,insteadofstandingontheshouldersofagiantortwo,canseefurtherbecausewe standonthetopofahumanpyramid,madeupofmillionswhohavegonebeforeus.Bybeinghereand presentingtoday,allofthesestudentsjointhatvastendeavor.Somemayendupseeingfartherthananyofus everhavebefore;buteverysingleoneofthem,bybringingsomethingnewintotheworld,hashelpedextend thehumanhorizon. Wealsogiveourprofoundthankstoourfacultyjudgesandmentors,whoreceivenothingextraintheir paychecksforputtinginthemanyhoursthatmakethisdayhappen.Theydothisbecausetheyknowthatby encouragingtheirstudentstoconductoriginalexperiments,writeoriginalscholarship,andcreateoriginalplays, videos,poems,andart,theyaregivingthosestudentsthebestpossibletrainingforthefuture,andtheyare honoringthemselvesandthefieldsofknowledgethattheyhavemadetheirlife’swork.
