Hello everyone: After such a beautiful summer, it is time to slow down maybe read a good book by the fire or prepare to go down south for winter. In October, I travelled with a small group to visit the famous Family Search Library in Salt Lake City, Utah operated by the Mormons. What a fascinating adventure with over 10 million microfilms and books to help with genealogy research! We were busy here at the Centre in September with our participation in Open Doors and our garage sale which raised $350! Coming up on November 25th is our annual fundraiser, the Olde Tyme Luncheon with auction and music. We know all our members and friends will help us by attending or donating for the auction sale and we thank you for your support. We always need extra volunteers to serve: please let us know if you can assist us. Our lease will terminate next September as the school will be closing. Our committee is looking into the possibility of moving to the basement of the municipal library. We will inform you as developments occur. Our Christmas tea on Friday December 14th will be our last day until we re-open Monday January 7th 2013, giving our volunteers a well deserved holiday. We will be having our annual general meeting on Sunday January 06, 2013 at 1:30 pm. We hope that all of you will continue supporting the centre by paying your dues, making donations or donating your time as volunteers. We welcome your comments and thank you for encouraging us to pursue our work in genealogy. In closing, we send our early best wishes to you and your families: Merry Christmas and a wonderful exciting New Year 2013. Featuring among others our very own Stephanie True, and Howard Goodall’s ‘Eternal Light’. Entry fee: $15. 3 Articles from our members 3.1 In honour of our veteran Suzanne presents her father-in-law, WWII Flt. Sgt. Carl James Cowden, who left this world on August 20, 2012 in Huntsville. Carl joined the military right after graduating from the Parry Sound District High School in April of 1942 and served until November of 1945. He signed up at the nearest recruiting center located in Toronto. Basic training was completed at the Exhibition Stadium and consisted of drill and Air Force indoctrination. Initially, Carl had wanted to become a pilot but was unable to as it was determined that he was color blind. While awaiting the next course as a Navigator, Carl was assigned to the Personal Awaiting Training platoon. These Aircrew PATs were used in compression training as the Air Force was still developing procedures for high altitude flying. Carl was then sent to Halifax for Aircrew training and went on to Winnipeg for the #5 Air Observers Navigator course. This course was conducted from January – June 1943 and consisted of 30 persons. They were teamed in pairs during the course; one person would take the bearing shots with the sextant/stars and compass while the other one recorded all the information. Unfortunately for Carl, his partner was always getting airsick. Upon completion of this course, they were all sent on a land/sea survival course after which they received their wings and were promoted to Sergeant. The Navigators were then sent back to Halifax to await the next troop transport to Europe. Carl was loaded onto the troop ship Aquiana for the 5-day journey to Scotland. Unlike the convoys that made the Trans-Atlantic journey under escort, troop ships were on their own without any protection. Odds were that out of numerous troop transports making the crossing, at least some of the ships would make it across safely. Upon arrival they were posted to the Air Force reception centre in Bormouth, Scotland and sent on to an Advanced Flying Unit in Northern Ireland for further navigator training. After completing Ground School the group of Navigators was put together with a group of Pilots, Gunners and Bombardiers. Unlike the Americans that assigned personnel to crews, the RAF, RCAF and other Commonwealth Air Forces would let the men form their own teams. Walking home from the mess hall one day, Carl was approached by a Pilot and a Bombardier and was asked if he would crew up ~5~ LE COURANT AUTUMN 2012 with them. Their crew now consisted of a Pilot, Radio Operator, Bombardier, Navigator (Carl), and 2 gunners. During the next phase of training, the crew was assigned a Wellington (Light Bomber). Their night mission training would be used as a decoy to confuse German Radar operators as to where the real attack would take place. Next, Carl’s crew was sent to TopCliff to start the training of 4-engine heavy bombers (Lancasters). The Navigator’s position on the Lancaster was right next to the engines (keeping in mind that Ear Defenders were unheard of at that time). At this time, the war with Germany was coming to a close. The complete crew had then volunteered for the Pacific war. Since the complement had already been selected, they returned to Canada on the pleasure cruiser The Ile de France. Suzanne Cowden #1635 3.2 Kateri Tekakwitha canonized by Pope Benedict XVI on October 21, 2012 Kateri was born near the town of Auriesville, New York, in the year 1656, the daughter of a Mohawk warrior. She was four years old when her mother died of smallpox. The disease also attacked Kateri and transfigured her face. She was adopted by her two aunts and an uncle. Kateri became converted as a teenager. She was baptized at the age of twenty and incurred the great hostility of her tribe. Although she had to suffer greatly for her Faith, she remained firm in it. Kateri went to the new Christian colony of Indians in Canada. Here she lived a life dedicated to prayer, penitential practices, and care for the sick and aged. Every morning, even in bitterest winter, she stood before the chapel door until it opened at four and remained there until after the last Mass. She was devoted to the Eucharist and to Jesus Crucified. She died on April 17, 1680 at the age of twenty-four. She is known as the “Lily of the Mohawks”. Devotion to Kateri is responsible for establishing Native American ministries in Catholic Churches all over the United States and Canada. Kateri was declared venerable by the Catholic Church in 1943 and she was beatified in 1980. Work is currently underway to have her Canonized by the Church. Hundreds of thousands have visited shrines to Kateri erected at both St. Francis Xavier and Caughnawaga and at her birth place at Auriesville, New York. Pilgrimages at these sites continue today. Bl. Kateri Tekakwitha is the first Native American to be declared Blessed on October 21, 2012. Her feast day is July 14. She is the patroness of the environment and ecology as is St. Francis of Assisi. 4. From Bancroft, Baldoon and Brighton to Timmins, Toronto and Trenton, find out more about the Ontario you thought you knew. ST-BERNARDIN 1912-2012 This book offers 476 pages of photos and lots of information on the people in the areas of St-Bernardin. During the summer, I learned about the war of 1812-14 when I borrowed these following books from the history room… Marianne Fournier #1802 HS-6-15 The War of 1812, Focus on Canadian History Series 1982, Grolier, Wesley B. Turner, 96 p. Very succinct, easily read in two hours, a good start in trying to understand the events. HS-22-17 The Invasion of Canada, 1812-1813, par Pierre Berton, McLelland & Stuart, 1980, 363 p. A book about a nation’s beginnings. Berton believes that if there had been no war, most of Ontario (then Upper Canada) would probably be American today by default. If the war had been lost by the British all of Canada would now be part of the United States. But the War of 1812, or more properly the myth of the war, served to give the new settlers a sense of community and set them on a different course from that of their neighbours. The Canadian way of life, says Berton, has its roots in the invasion of Canada. ¨We are Canadians and not Americans because of a foolish war that scarcely anybody wanted or needed but which, once launched, no one knew how to stop.¨ ATTENTION: We have the list of the soldiers of the Carignan- Salières regiment who married a ‘Fille ~7~ LE COURANT AUTUMN 2012 du Roi’. 5 Collections from the history room Ransom Ledoux, our Friday supervisor, wants to invite you to look at the following documents we have in the history room.
